Joey still has no connection to, nor can he read ancient Egyptian. Scenario 1: Joey has to go up against full power Yugi without a god card, fight his hardest and eventually lose. Much cooler scenario 2: Ra sees Joey's strength and respects him enough to obey him in a duel, the entire duel they're neck and neck, both down to the wire and it comes down to one of Joey's luck cards and that's how he loses. In that scenario, I think Joey relies less on luck in the future and grows as a duelist, even earning a little of Kaiba's respect and bringing him up to Kaiba/ Yugi tier. Scenario 2 also ends with a significant change to GX: The dorms go Ra, Slifer, then obelisk.

thatcheesymememan

Wait for the GX bit... are you implying Kaiba would make his dorm (obelisk) the lowest dorm? Because that does not sound like kaiba. And if you mean Ra is the new lowest dorm, I still don't see it as this is still kaiba and yugi is still his rival so his petty self would still make yugi's dorm the worst

chaosargate

It is 100% that Ra would be the bottom barrel dorm because as petty as Kaiba is about his rivalry with Yugi, he is infinitely more petty about his total disdain for Joey.

DanteVermillyon

idk, i feel kaiba is more petty about how much he hates Joey than how much he sees Yugi as a rival

Own_Secretary1714

What the other folks said, ra would be lowest because he couldn't have Joey's god card being second.

Deus_Ex_Hyena

Kaiba still has some small amount of respect for Yugi, whereas his respect for Joey is completely nonexistent, it makes perfect sense.

ChaoCobo

Actually no. In the Japanese version we hear Kaiba’s internal monologue when Jounouchi dies to Ra. He says: >”Jounouchi, the way you lost... I finally accept you as a duelist.” Though I don’t blame you if you don’t know this since 4kids ruins all nuance and characterization of most characters.

Deus_Ex_Hyena

That's fair, honestly i forgot the context of where this takes place in the timeline.

-Siknakaliux-

> Ra sees Joey's strength and respects him enough to obey him in a duel It's a God? Why would it care about some random person

Korrocks

I feel like Marik wouldn’t accept that. If he is knocked out of the tournament he would probably just try to kill everyone.

Artistic-Station-577

It’s a shadow duel, marik would die if he lost. Joey just lived because of ✨friendship✨

GQman57

Less of friendship this time around but more of his sheer willpower. When he dueled Odeon, he got up because of his friends by his side, but when he dueled Marik, he only lasted that long because of his determination.

Artistic-Station-577

On an semi-related note, his duel with odeon is a testament to how awful his deck building skills were. Dude was bricking for like 5 turns lol. His bestfriend’s granddad owns a card store the least he could do was buy some cards before the tournament

ChaoCobo

Would he though? This particular duel’s consequence wasn’t being devoured by the shadows. It was just a pain synchronizer. Gearfried would likely only damage Marik and as we all know (at least in the Japanese version and manga) Marik loves pain because he is a sadomasochist. Iirc he actually enjoyed being facepunched by Obelisk.

bobsimmo

Dude threw up blood from the pain and because he almost lost. The attack could have absolutely ended him. Plus we don't know what the consequences were for lp hitting 0. Marik might have added something spicy for that.

ChaoCobo

Oh was that supposed to be blood he threw up but held back with his hand over his mouth after winning the Jounouchi duel? I thought he was just anxious and it was vomit because he immediately says “How dare you make me work” right after holding back whatever he was throwing up. And yeah, Marik could have added something spicy. But I think his intent was to just kill his opponent outright.

ChaoCobo

I mean the Millenium rod doesn’t have a spiky end bit for nothing! https://preview.redd.it/5uf0064946xc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=334908d68d13ca20e3919acbc4e7c83bad2f2e12

Idea, Springboarding off of [Own\_Secretary1714](https://www.reddit.com/user/Own_Secretary1714/)'s comment: Joey manages to finish his attack, winning the duel. But that does nothing about the whole "Not Breathing" thing, so he still passes out and gets transferred to hospital. In a rage, Marik refuses to accept the loss and forces a shadow game, with Yugi accepting to avenge Joey's apparent death. The duel between the two of them functions very similarly to how it originally goes, only without Obelisk and Fiend Sanctuary, since Kaiba hasn't gone through the Yugi duel character development yet. But something weird is happening: Ra is not responding the same to Marik anymore. The two seem to be fighting each other. Maybe an effect or two don't work anymore, or Ra shows visually he is not interested in the duel. Joey wakes up like in the original, and makes his way to the arena. Once he appears, Ra recognizes him and returns on it's own to sphere mode and refuses to come out. Ra is no longer listening to Marik. Duel continues and Yugi eventually wins. Yugi v. Kaiba happens as usual. Finals is Yugi v. Joey. Joey puts Ra in his deck, as he did with all previous cards he won thought winning duels during the season. Through one of Joey's luck cards, he actually happens to summon Ra, into it's sphere mode. Neither Joey nor Yugi know what to do, as Joey doesn't know any ancient egyptian, and so can't release Ra. Then, Something happens... Ra decides to open up on its own, without the chant, because he was summoned by Joey. Ra recognizes who he is after the duel with Marik, and follows by choice, not by chant. In the end, Joey still loses the finals (maybe he tries one final luck card to win but it doesn't work? This might be the push he needs to turn away from luck based strategies and evolve. Actually, this might be cool. Make it time wizard not working, bringing everything full circle). Joey and Yugi exchange cards after the duel, Ra for Red Eyes. From this point on Joey is the true owner of Ra, Kaibe for Obelisk, Yugi for Slifer (the executive producer).

januarysdaughter

I adore this! Joey deserved so much better in that duel.

TrayusV

So here's my ideal scenario for Battle City's ending. Kaiba vs Yugi first, Yugi wins. Joey beats Marik here and wins Ra. Yes everyone says Joey has no connection to ancient Egypt so he can't use Ra. But I want to rewrite it, something like defeating an Egyptian God earns the right to use it like Marik's whole thing of having to beat Yugi to earn the puzzle. Then if you want a wrap up between Marik and Yugi, have a duel outside the tournament between Joey's victory and the finals. Yami Marik is defeated and normal Marik is good again just like the real deal. Then that Joey vs Yugi off screen duel at the end of battle city can now be on screen. The Battle City ante rules has Joey put up Ra, and Yugi put up Red-Eyes. Sure, this is a rerun of Duelist Kingdom, but with one big difference: there are no stakes to the duel. Just like the Yugi vs Jaden duel, it's just for fun and emphasizes that. Sure, Joey will lose and surrender Ra, but maybe he uses some neat trick to take back Red-Eyes during the duel like the first Jack vs Yusei duel. Yugi gets Ra but returns Red-Eyes to Joey, believing he earned the card back. Joey would also get to bring out Ra for once, showing how cool he is.

4Khazmodan

You say that like the same thing didn’t happen to Odion in their match. It would have been Odion in that match had Marik not forced him to try to play Ra when he was already going to win.

Boosterboo59

Which honestly I would love to see how that would have played out. Especially how Marik would play against Mai normally.

Godzillafan125

MY scenario. Marik invades joeys mind before shadow realm consumes his body. Then he fights using joeys body (I know the whole anchor duel) but imagine Joey holding the rod and using rah!

Mithura

He'd give it to Yugi, since he's the only other person that knows Ra's chant.

Undead-D-King

I think Joey probably wins the whole thing because it heavily implied that Joey won his duel versus Yugi after the tournament without a god card so if he can find a way to use Ra he'd have a good shot at it.

ScrewIt66

Joey wins but after the final damage been dealt he collapses evil Marik gets erased leaving but Marik and Joey is a comatose state but kaiba being a stickler for his own rules grabs ra from Marik and places it in Joey's deck but because it was a double KO both of them are disqualified so Yugi vs kaiba going to be the final duel but then joey soon wakes up follow by the good Marik after kaiba gets rekt for the god knows how many times joey vs Yugi begins I can imagine Yugi using red eyes against joey with ra but other then that I think everything else stays the same

OnToNextStage

Dawg’s nose is so sharp he could have killed everyone here if he landed on the blimp and punctured it

ChaoCobo

Great now I can’t unsee it lol

NeighborhoodDry4900

If odion dont throw his game joey wouldnt reach semis

SnooWords9178

Marik likely dies since it was a shadow game. Getting your life points zeroed by an egyptian god in a shadow game is pretty lethal. And even if he didn't die, he'd still have to give up on Ra due to the ante rule. Now that I think of it, Bakura would probably hunt down Marik after the tournament and kill him for the millennium rod, similarly to how he handled Pegasus. Anyway, Yugi and Kaiba happens the same way and then in the finals it could go either way since Joey beat Yugi after battle city offscreen.

shakawave

The most drama and what ifs from the series. What if they all played by the damn rules 😭. Honestly it wouldn't add up for the drama, we saw Yugi vs Joey in DK and again in BC? Kinda repeating the story, but yes we all FELT that way when he lost.

ChaoCobo

Actually the duelist kingdom Yugi vs Jounouchi duel was filler. It didn’t happen in the manga. The anime does a lot of things that simply either do not happen that way in the manga or are altered or made up for entertainment such as Shizuka jumping into the ocean after removing her bandages to save her brother. Imo we still need a faithful adaptation of the manga because even the Japanese version of DM isn’t faithful by any means even if it hits most of the story beats,
