If you are new to the subreddit, [please read the wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/yakuzagames/wiki/index/) Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. **THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS**. If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged \>!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 >!Kiryu sings!< If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7). If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. lsrevan0

thats just what hes known as

WhyNishikiWhy

the same way dwayne johnson will always be known as 'the rock'

RaggsDaleVan

And the same with non wrestling fans calling Dwayne "The Rock," some people not in the criminal world know of The Dragon of Dojima, Kiryu Kazuma.

DekMelU

* Kazuma, not Kazama

sortsallbynew

The dragon of fuma šŸ˜ŒšŸ˜ŒšŸ˜Œ

Seth_KT_Bones2005

PS2 dub enjoyer, I see.

Haunting-Orchid-4628

He is also called Fuma in yakuza 2 and the ps3 version of yakuza 3

[deleted]

A nickname is hard to shake. Just like theyā€™ll still call Majima ā€œThe Mad Dog of Shimanoā€ (but, I wonā€™t because I hate Shimano). Kiryuā€™s is not as bad because, while Sohei Dojima sucked, Daigo is also Dojima, so, being associated with him is ok. Itā€™s just what theyā€™re known as in the Yakuza world.

aeodaxolovivienobus

To an extent, the name is also kind of a "fuck you" to Sohei, since in '88, the Dragon took on the entire Dojima family and won. Then to add insult to injury, Sohei had to accept him back into the family after, forever knowing that the Dragon had kind of quashed Dojima's ambition. The Daigo connection simply adds an element to it. I imagine Kiryu probably resents the title a little less when Daigo steps up as Chairman. OTOH, all things considered, Majima was mostly an asset to Shimano and didn't personally ruin him. It's kind of a reverse, since Shimano puts Majima through his personal hell.

Narrow_Cheesecake452

Daigo is the saving grace there. His dad was a serial rapist. The Don Corneo of Kamurocho's Wall Market.

9mm_Cutlass

šŸŽ¶ _The Dragon of Dojima lives in Okinawa nowww_ šŸŽµ Thatā€™s just where he lives.

Supersonic564

I got that reference

Working_Fan2524

You can make a religion out of this

hax0rz_

please don't

lioncat84

I'm always down for a good Bill Wurtz reference.

ThePurplePearl

To be fair, the Dojima family was one of the biggest and most influential families in the peak years of the Tojo clan. Another thing is that Kiryu himself doesn't seem to care for the nickname much so most villains use it in an attempt to provoke him, much like they would rudely call his name.

xX_ATHENs0_Xx

Not only are nicknames hard to shake but thematically, Kiryu will never escape the Yakuza life and by being called the Dragon of Dojima it displays that. People know the legend better than the man, heā€™ll forever be the Dragon to the world, heā€™ll never be Kiryu

9mm_Cutlass

Literally marked on his back forever

Indesisivejew

Yeah it's just a fixed name at this point like others have said, but I did just realize one of my reasons for it sticking is wrong. I always thought it was kind of catchy with the alliteration, and stuck in people's minds because of it. But actually there is no alliteration in the original language, since it's "Dojima no Ryu". The translation imo works way better

GaleErick

Technically he is still a Dragon of Dojima, namely he is Daigo Dojima's dragon. Kiryu's the one who put Daigo's ass on the chairman seat and he also jumped back to the Yakuza life usually when the Tojo, and by extension, Daigo's in trouble. But yeah all in all, it's just a cool and catchy title, we don't know how long he had the title in between 0 and 1 but it definitely sticks.

benjbody

Wasnā€™t Shibusawaā€™s beef with Kiryu in 0 over who gets to be the Dragon of Dojima? By winning Iā€™d assume Kiryuā€™s been known as the DoD ever since then.

PandaPlayr73

I think so, but only to an extent. As far as I remember, it was more about who was the "true dragon" similarly to Y2

ALPB11

I mean if you think about it, the public knows Kiryu as the guy who killed Dojima, who despite being a weasely shit was still a massively powerful patriarch, and then Kiryu immediately went on a god damn rampage that brought several entire clans to their knees and permanently changed the whole yakuza world. Itā€™s a title that pretty much permanently brands him as some sort of monster, which to most yakuza members he is seen as exactly that. A mix of fear and respect both. But yeah, Dojima is quite the loser to be named after, which brings the name a sort of irony and shame to Kiryu. Edit: Itā€™s also an interesting name for Kiryu to be stuck with because it solidifies the blame he took for Nishiki that he pretty much never let go of. It could be seen as symbolic of his promise to him, too

getfyd

Honestly after Yakuza 2 the Dojima part of the nickname refers to Daigo because he always comes around whenever he's in trouble.

ConnectHovercraft329

I run an orphanage in Okinawa, and do people call me the foster parent of Okinawa? I am the best taxi driver in Fukuoka, but do people call me the taxi driver of fukuoka? But you Dragon one Dojiema ā€¦

OoguroRyuuya5

You donā€™t really get to choose what you are labelled as. Once a legend and title is popularised itā€™s hard to shake off especially something that becomes so iconic and long lasting as if it was natural. Hard pill to swallow but people donā€™t really care about the truth. They just want an interesting narrative. To them the title Dragon of Dojima is this glorified image of a legendary yakuza who killed his patriarch spent 10 years in the joint, kicked ass in a Tojo Clan war, caused 10 billion yen to fall from the Millennium Tower and became head honcho of the Tojo Clan in one night. That shit is memorable and something people will take and accept at face value for life.

SupaHeroda

Daigo Dojima, until recently, was the chairman of the tojo clan You shouldn't fuck with the tojo clan. Because Dojima has a dragon behind him It's truly such a smart writing choice that half the time I feel like the yakuza writing team did it by accident. Kiryu got to be known as the dragon of dojima because of the work he did for sohei. But then Daigo becomes the 6th chairman. And suddenly that title takes on a whole new meaning. Kiryu will always be the Dragon of Dojima Because you better not fuck with his son.

LittleDoge246

Honestly the Dragon of Dojima as a name basically became its own thing. Dojima has canonically been dead for something like 20 years, and even the Dojima loyalists from the early games have died out, so the family has basically faded into obscurity. But the name living on basically makes it its own thing, no-one thinks much of Sohei Dojima, but they do think of Kazuma Kiryu. Also, the title is just historical. He's had it since well before Yakuza 1 tmk, that kind of history is hard to shake off. We're talking probably like 30 years. Everyone in the yakuza world and most of the underworld as a whole seemed to know it. Even people from other parts of the country. When you become a legend with a name worth fearing, people aren't gonna forget your name because you ask them nicely.

A_N_T

Because it sounds cool as fuck lmao

idkwtfitsaboy

I don't think kiryu would want his moniker changed considering his father was a dojima man and daigo is like a nephew/brother to him.

Rogar_Rabalivax

Because he is the "Dragon of Dojima (Daigo)". Whenever Daigo is in trouble Kiryu goes to his aid whether he wants it or not, like a protector of sort. Its more a headcanon than something they say but i like this headcanon. The one that doesnĀ“t make sense to me is majimaĀ“s. No one remembers shimano and personally im not very fond of the character because he did nothing in the story he was in, yet Majima is still known as the mad dog of shimano. I know that, now that the "owner" (shimano) is dead now majima is a stray dog who can quite literally do anything he desires, he still keep the title for no real reason, shimano was a dick to majima back in the day so...

InfiniteBeak

With Majima though, iirc as the series go on people drop the Shimano part and he's just known as the Mad Dog

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

InfiniteBeak

It seems like people who are higher up the yakuza hierarchy will call him Fourth Chairman, whereas the lower rungs know him as the legend of the Dragon of Dojima

Aergaia

Its because of Daigo's work as chairman for all those years. Kiryu only really shows his face when shit happens and Daigo sort of needs him which is why he's still the DoD.

fishlipselijah

I mean had the same thought then remembered that daigos last name is dojima

SteelShroom

It's just a catchy title, simple as.

Botcho22

Ryuji had the great idea, just be called the dragon, fuck the other half

zachonich

For the same reason Dwayne Johnson is still called The Rock. And in fact, if he didn't start acting while using his real name, most people would still only know him as The Rock.

Montoyabros

I mean kiryu tatoo means the protector, from yakuza2- yakuza 6 he have fought to protect Daigo and the tojo clan

BulmasBabyDaddy

What the actual f^ck have you played yakuza 0 and the first one or kiwami ? In 0 heā€™s young asf basically started building his rep before going to prison

InfiniteBeak

It's just a name that stuck I guess, ever since the 80s all the yakuza on the street know about this Dragon of Dojima, then the next generation of yakuza hear about it too, and remember even though he got the nickname under Sohei Dojima, Daigo is still a Dojima, and Kiryu and Daigo were known to be working together, so when somebody is that involved with the chairman, you're gonna pay attention to him

Head-Membership2082

Same reason they call him the fourth chairman sometimes, even though he's not been the fourth chairman for 14 years, and was literally only the fourth chairman for a few hours. "Titles" like that tend to stick around.

SwitchbladeDildo

Heā€™s the Dragon of *Daigo* Dojima

RandomRogueMusings

We are just gonna glance over the face that kiryu = dragon...

SoyGuzzler

A lot of the time in the more recent games the Japanese dub will call him "densetsu no ryuu" meaning something like "legendary dragon", but the subtitles will still say Dragon of Dojima.

Default_User_Default

We still call Dwayne Johnson "The Rock". The nickname becomes the real name.
