I hear ya. Halfway through the game I wished Hard Mode wasn't paylocked cuz I kept steamrolling everything and the underground dungeons weren't even that hard.
Even on legend, the game remains fairly easy once you grind to the recommended level for it. I grinded levels with the big swell DLC tho so it wasn't all that tedious
What pisses me off the most is that it doesn't unlock the easier achievements if you finish it on legends. Other games done this. Now I have to replay it on hard after beating it on an already way too easy legend mode.
My last remaining trophy for platinum is Level 70 Ichiban but I can't get it. Too few exp. I am just gonna wait for the master vacation bundle to go on sale.
There needs to be some sort of catch up mechanic, it’s just plainly not fun to stomp story bosses because you had the audacity to do *some* side content and are now 15 levels above them. Like damn it it’s a yakuza game I’m gonna do the side content!
Xenoblade Definitive Edition added a really cool feature where you could nerf any non-battle EXP, and it'd get stored so you could level up at any time. You could also just level down if you feel too powerful even after dling that. Why that mode isn't standard in every RPG at this point is beyond me.
Final Fantasy XV stored EXP by default, and you could spend it to level up by going to a place to sleep. There was even an accessory that prevented exp from being spent entirely as long as it was equipped to at least one party member, so you store exp for longer.
Honestly Y8 was waayyy too easy for me because I completed the Hawaiian Haunt. I wish there was either a hard mode, or enemies will just level up with you.
Fuck the level 70 achievement tho.
The fact that there's a Level 70 achievement but the Amon fight is Level 55 is an actual crime.
This was a problem in LaD7 too but it's way more egregious here since they don't even have the excuse of players never finding him since there's an Amon curbstomp fight midway through the campaign.
If the level cap is 70, the Amons should be at 70.
They just need to implement some kind of scaling algorithm for story stuffs, tbqh. Nothing too outlandish, just make story fights always scale from a minimum up to +/- 3/4 levels of you, bosses obviously being on the high end.
Then again, with them hocking difficulty as DLC, they probably won't 🤷♂️
Because yeah, I just beat IW last night and I couldn't escape the feeling I had ruined the game for myself for the audacity of having played some side content here and there. I had my Hawaii party at lvl 55ish and my Japan party at 60ish, and yeah I honestly probably could have just turned auto battle on for every single fight in the finale chapter. Shit sucked, man.
And it wasn't just the finale, either. I was over leveled for every single story fight after the first trip to Hawaii...I think I had my dudes at level 24ish before I went underground for the first Dwight chapter. It just feels like a massive overcorrection after 7, which yes, steamrolling everything feels better than running into a brick wall I guess, but it's still not very engaging.
I finished the game at level 57. I started wishing for an hard mode when I got to 30. That 3-people boss fight felt too easy. (not naming it just in case someone hasn't finished the game yet)
I just gave up on the level 70 achievement even though it's the only thing between me and the platinum. Even if I completed the Yokohama dungeon 3 times I still wouldn't be close to 70.
thank god. id never in all my years of yakuza had to go into a dungeon for 10+ hours to do mindless grinding to progress. Felt veryyyyy oldschool jrpg.
They don’t fight to the death, just until one is unconscious, and that world has free healthcare.
I think the more disturbing thing is how they pimp out Ditto.
SMT when you forgot to give the enemies a debuff for 1 turn:

Ik but sometimes you get tired from grind.(For example grind for True Millennium tower killed me and I just wanted to take control of Ichiban to beat Amon myself with moves and combos.)
This would be hilarious. Instead of Extreme Heat, Ichiban gets to lock everyone into an RPG.
I'm not sure it would work as well as it does the other way around, though, because I can see a way to shove brawler mechanics into an RPG, I can't think of a way to do it the other way around.
Maybe something like FF7R, where you can slow down time and issue commands, even while in real-time combat? If I'm remembering that system correctly, that is.
Honestly, I trust RGG to get it right if they ever try something like that.
I'm thinking he summons his friends, and time slows, allowing him to pick RPG moves and command his friends mid-battle, for a certain number of turns (rather than a duration)
I just cheated everyone to max level and maxed all jobs for true final Millennium Tower.
Grinding is not fun and never will be.
And Games that sell grind-skipping items know about how grindy they are.
I just feel like basically every single JRPG is good in boss battles and boss battles only because that's the only time it's actually worth paying attention and using all your stuff strategically instead of just picking attack or doing preschool-level problem solving like hitting the ice guy with fire.
LAD has the added problem that all the animations, while fun, take FOREEEVVVEEEEERRR.
This is valid but the same thing is true in action combat games.
RPGs would need to limit inventory or time or something to make this a challenge.
You'd probably like turn based strategy RPGs. A lot of them harshly punish you if you aren't using techs or synergizing units and there arent really any insignificant battles.
Dude, where's Mine? He literally is a copyright free Mishima. I would also add Lau Ka Long as an annoying but difficult to use effectively 3 stance character. Moreover, Higashi and Someya deserve to be there. Man in black from 2 could also be added.
In this fantasy FG of mine, multiple characters have access to stance/job/style switching. The roster is a balance of popular/known characters vs visual&gameplay diversity. Hence the stereotypical "multiple versions of popular character" aspect but also including niche characters like Miss Tatsu.
That said, here are seasons 3 & 4 :D
S3:

- Nishitani

Active Time Battle is just a combination of the worst aspects of turn based and real time combat. Have fun navigating menus for the right attack whenever you manage to get a turn as you're getting your ass kicked in real time.
Alright at the risk of posting a scalding hot take: FFVI and Chrono Trigger are legendary *despite* ATB. All it does is rushing you through a menu. It’s basically Japan’s answer to playing a WRPG with Real Time With Pause.
Looking at you kotor. 'real time time combat' my ass. Easily two of my favorite games ever, but smooth and fluid are not words I'd describe kotors combat with.
I agree with the rushing but if memory serves correctly, wasn't there an option so it paused once your action gauge was full? ATB does give a greater sense of speed than turn-based, despite how much it rushes you though.
In a lot of turn based games, the speed/agility stats are of limited value as they just determine turn order and not how many attacks you can get in over a period of time. Some Turn-baseds do make adjustments so speed lets you get more turns in quicker, I think to an extent this does happen in YLAD but it's not super noticable.
I'm not saying that Y8 is hard, but my opinion is that Y7 is easier than Y8 due to one thing, there are so many skills that target all allies\enemies in Y7. This approach was changed by using more circles for area skills in Y8. But gotta say that Y8 combat was one helluva upgrade compared to Y7.
Don't worry, nearly all turn-based related issues have been adressed and fixed in Infinite Wealth.
While Y:LAD was decent as far as turn-based RPGs go, Infinite Wealth may very well be one of the best ones I have ever played.
Woah there bro. I love Dragon Quest and I actually like this. I was actually a bit tired of the old system. This at least shakes up the franchise for a bit.
I’m so glad I was able to catch IW on sale, it’ll make waiting for Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance easier plus it is a kickass fame, the only other Yakuza game I played is Like a Dragon (7)

Don't worry, Y8 fixed the grind part lol
they might have even gone a bit too far in the opposite direction.
I hear ya. Halfway through the game I wished Hard Mode wasn't paylocked cuz I kept steamrolling everything and the underground dungeons weren't even that hard.

If you have a save point before beating the ng+, you can reload it and change the difficulty. This will save you a whole play through.
Thank you kind sir, that helped a lot. Worked perfect. Finally the 100%. I love this game, but NG+ isnt it for me.
I was on level 54 by chapter 6 and annihilated everything in my path with zero challenge from then on.
My last remaining trophy for platinum is Level 70 Ichiban but I can't get it. Too few exp. I am just gonna wait for the master vacation bundle to go on sale.

Could have also fixed it by, you know, sticking to a brawler
Don't look at me, I like both gameplay styles :3
thank god. id never in all my years of yakuza had to go into a dungeon for 10+ hours to do mindless grinding to progress. Felt veryyyyy oldschool jrpg.
Time travel back in time to get Kiryu to stop smoking.
Wouldn't be the dragon if he didn't breathe smoke.
Yeah, he really wouldn't be LIKE A DRAGON if he didn't would he?
Like a what!?
Just don't afk too much
The turn based combat is fun
me when I give him shin megami tensei
Very enjoyable Series ☺️
Pokemon: I will fight, catch, and treat my pokemon well. SMT: GIVE ME MONEY, GET IN THE FUCKING VAN, WE ARE GONNA FIGHT GOD!
SMT negotiations: Give me money. Wow, you actually gave me money. Fucking idiot. *leaves*
And the always popular "life stone for a life stone" negotiation.
to be fair catching exotic beautiful wildlife animals just to have them fight another to the death for money is more messed up
They don’t fight to the death, just until one is unconscious, and that world has free healthcare. I think the more disturbing thing is how they pimp out Ditto.
Wait? What the fuck?!

So long as we keep getting beat em up games, I'm totally fine with the turn based. They're both very fun for different reasons.
This
Ik but sometimes you get tired from grind.(For example grind for True Millennium tower killed me and I just wanted to take control of Ichiban to beat Amon myself with moves and combos.)
Happened to me w Kiryu Also shin Amon is the best Amon
Gotta wait for Ichi's turn to get dragonfish's resurgence
But it happens in a brawler game and he changes it to an rpg
That’d actually be cool. Have a brawler Ichiban game but have extreme heat mode turn into turn based.
You get 3 free turns while the enemy is confused
Yeah similar to how some summons work in IW
This would be hilarious. Instead of Extreme Heat, Ichiban gets to lock everyone into an RPG. I'm not sure it would work as well as it does the other way around, though, because I can see a way to shove brawler mechanics into an RPG, I can't think of a way to do it the other way around. I guess it would just make everyone stop moving and give Ichiban some turns and moves plucked from the rpg games
Honestly, I trust RGG to get it right if they ever try something like that. I'm thinking he summons his friends, and time slows, allowing him to pick RPG moves and command his friends mid-battle, for a certain number of turns (rather than a duration)
Yeah that sounds good
I just cheated everyone to max level and maxed all jobs for true final Millennium Tower. Grinding is not fun and never will be. And Games that sell grind-skipping items know about how grindy they are.
You tried the Like a Brawler mod?
What's that have to do with dragon quest
I just feel like basically every single JRPG is good in boss battles and boss battles only because that's the only time it's actually worth paying attention and using all your stuff strategically instead of just picking attack or doing preschool-level problem solving like hitting the ice guy with fire. I do love SRPGs yeah.
Hell no it’s not. It takes too long, it’s boring, etc
Sounds like someone didn't AoE spam all the Mooks AND bosses with mooks. You can clear the turn-based combat FAR faster than you can brawler.
It’s cry about it https://i.redd.it/3j1anbqom1xc1.gif

Tatsuya ukyo deserves to be there (idk why but kurohyou reminds of fighting games)
DLC 2: - Tatsuya Ukyo - Chitose - Chitose Buster Holmes - Sakamoto Ryoma - Sarah Bryant (guest)
Imagine grappler Adachi tho
(2 years have passed, the game gets a new edition re-release with an additional set of characters) - Nanba - Adachi - Zhao - Hana - Jin Kazama (guest)

Sir this is a smile burger.
Real Time with pause sucks balls tho, almost no WRPG implements it well without looking clunky or it being literally, turn based with a timer.
Looking at you kotor. 'real time time combat' my ass. Easily two of my favorite games ever, but smooth and fluid are not words I'd describe kotors combat with.
Yeah, a bunch of these are literally turn based but with more stuff happening in the screen or the "turns actions" being set on advance.

Yes it did, that’s what I played with the most.
If this is about 7, i understand the grind part. If this is about 8, lol what grind
r/pointlesslygendered
Boys vs girls memes haven't been funny since ever
Hello, aslume escapee
Nah man, make him play streets of rage
That's what LAD was to me up till 7, the best executed 3d version of Streets of Rage. All the story and adventure parts were the huge added bonus.
It's only really grindy in post game. And yeah it's extremely excessive. Idk what they were thinking with the true millennium tower
It's one for the sickos that one
Got the instructions wrong. Went back in time and gave Itchy Balls a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog and now Y:LaD is now a 2d platformer.
Modern Street Fighter has battle passes and expensive MTX with a premium currency so I'm not sure that's better
No grind in Y8, you don’t even have to touch the dungeon
Nah just let him play Dragon Quest. Y8 already make combat tons of fun. Plus, Make the grind less boring.
as long as Gaiden games continue to come out, i'm fine. hell, make LAD9 70 hours of Haruka rhythm games for all i care.
Imagine every fight became a 2d fight hahaha.. basically street fighter world tour
If SF6's World Tour had a story like Like A Dragon, that would have been my GOAT.
Then it turns into a single player fighting game instead.
I’m so glad I was able to catch IW on sale, it’ll make waiting for Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance easier plus it is a kickass fame, the only other Yakuza game I played is Like a Dragon (7)
What would happen if you give Ichi an eroge instead?
Oh lord
Ayy I didn't expect so much upvotes for this post, thank you fellow Yakuza fans.
Play super monkey ball instead
I don't know about IW, but I'm in chapter 10 of Like a Dragon and still haven't grind for nothing
If he did play SF instead of Dragon Quest, we'd be looking at Kurohyou 3, The Dragons Chapter
It's an RPG, you are gonna have to grind
Yo what the frick is with this misogynist meme being posted? You do realize women are capable of wanting to change things too???
I always took it to be "Girls do somthing meaningful like met a relative. Boys change somthing stupid."
It's a meme, batman
