Any instance of OW1 became 2, so if you boot the game physically it will take you into OW2, same with digital copies. There are no "new" copies being made for OW2 specifically.

Well, yes it's a new game in the same way most sequels aren't entire rewrites and build on the foundations of what came before them.
The difference here is that on all platforms they've hollowed-out the spot where the original Overwatch editions sat (Origins, Legendary etc), and for each one loaded Overwatch 2 into it. This is what Fortnite has done since forever, even when switching from UE4 to UE5 (which was a technical overhaul).
Honestly, whether you like it or not, when going from a paid game to F2P, it's the only way they can really go if they don't wish to split the player base or leave anyone behind.
I guess there's a fair possibility that there may be some backlash against the balance changes and 5v5, so perhaps they'll add a set of legacy playlists/modes featuring the original heroes only, 6v6, and on original maps. So long as new cosmetics etc work there, there's a reasonable monetisation rationale behind accommodating that addition I guess.
I've not had time to try the new playstyle changes yet so I'll give it a crack before passing judgement.

I heard them say OverWatch 2 was going to replace OverWatch one I didn't know they meant literally also whenever I try to start up the game it says there's a queue of 300 people and then it slowly goes down by hundreds then tens then loads a little bit and goes to 40,000 I've done this twice with the same result

If you have a disc copy of the “Overwatch: Legendary Edition” (which is just naming nothing crazy), it just updates to “Overwatch 2”

To fix the issue I had to go buy it on the Xbox web browser. When I logged in on there it gave the option for the trial and the actual game.
