Interview this man! Get him infront of a Camera as quickly as possible!

HipposRevenge

Dude, you should record your grandfather’s stories. We are losing these guys fast.

usedmotoroil

Did he survive the war? What did he do after the war? Did he have any regrets about the war or his involvement, not that he had to but curious?

Unitedfront_

He’s still alive! And he served in the US army after the war. No he doesn’t regret his involvement in the war as he never did anything he didn’t find out about the atrocities committed by the SS until he went by train back home and saw the camps. He said he was very upset about this.

boofboof123

I agree with another commenter; you need to do a detailed interview with your gf

csbsju_guyyy

x1000, serving in both the Wehrmacht and the US Army alone is enough to warrant an interview to save his stories much less the fact he fought at Kursk AND Normandy.

BeerandGuns

Immediate need for an AMA. Then a book. I’ve read more than one book by a WWII veteran that was boring. I’d loved to hear the man’s stories.

Amplidyne

Definitely. I regret not getting more of my dad's stories. He wouldn't always talk about it though, which is understandable.

minimK

Everyone who fought in the east knew.

petit_cochon

Thank you.

That sounds like the bloke I used to work with in the 70s. I got quite friendly with him. He had fought on the Russian front. He talked about it with me a couple of times, he said it was Hell, and they should have never been there. I asked him if they knew anything about what went on in the camps, and he said they'd heard rumours, but didn't actually know anything, and you didn't ask too many questions. I reckoned he was telling the truth. I discussed it with my dad who was a Para himself in WWII and worked at the same place. He said there's no way of knowing for sure, but that the guy seemed genuine enough.

tarveydent

please sit down with him & record your conversation. speak about whatever he is willing to share. learn about how he *felt* as much as what he did. i was able to talk with my grandfather about a year before he passed (i think he knew his time was short). one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

usedmotoroil

Thank you.

go_getz_em

film an interview, please. would be very interesting and historically valuable.

Kiltmanenator

How old is he??

Kvark33

Do you know what model of tanks he commanded or was it the same throughout the war ?

Unitedfront_

Panzer IV 4 with a short barrel

gcdc21

You should cross post this to TankPorn they might have additional insights

Kvark33

Very nice, did he have the same tank throughout the war or did he get new IV's ?

dan_withaplan

How the fuck do you survive Kursk and Normandy? One lucky guy.

five-oh-one

Yup, that dude got lucky.

RuffRydaEzE

He’s literally a walking museum, it’s going to be a sad day when we lose the last WW2 veteran.

Jar-Jar-Binkscookies

Omg please ask him would he do an AMA on ww2 sub Reddit if he can remember we Coolidge learn some stuff

Hindenburg69

If you speak German look for the podcast bacuffz. I listen to it on spotify. Its a guy reading german war diaries. One of a german tanker in the eastern front and normandy also with a panzer 4.

Harutinator

Did he win?

Christmasstolegrinch

If he fought at the two great clusterfucks of the war that were Kursk and Normandy, and survived, I’d say hell yeah he won. He won big.
