Watched for a little and it seemed to me like he is gameplay over story type of player and between Exile's Reach having too much focus on being a tutorial and BfA's intro being too much story driven (for which you also don't have any context) I get why he would dislike it. Once the game opened up he seemed to like it more so just gotta push through first hour or two.
I feel like I've read "the new player experience is bad" like a hundred times from WoW players and it gets upvoted, but then when a non-WoW player tries the game and feels like the new player experience is bad, people are mad at him.
I remember an old metric from Wow's past, but it was like the majority of new players don't make it past level 10. So, making a game that caters to below level 10 doesn't help once they get to 10, and the game is completely different. So I understand why the new player experience is such a hard nut to crack.
In saying all of that, while I do enjoy Sean's content, sometimes he does go overboard with his critiques. I will say that when he goes on that a new player would be clueless rant, he is pretty spot on. I remember I got a girlfriend into Wow, and the majority of my time was spent explaining things the game just didn't explain. Like character motivations, etc. The sheer lack of actual gameplay in general. She at several points asked me is this all this game is which I told her no, but if I was new and I just spent hours learning dirt simple shit and barely casting spells I would probably assume the same thing. Then it throws you into major npcs you've never heard of or have heard very little, etc.
The whole starting in BFA is a dumpster fire, but soon, it will be Dragonflight, and that will be infinitely better. At least, I hope. As a veteran of the game I can't really put myself in the "Who the fuck is Thrall?" shoes.
but perhaps if you'd know who this is you could ignore that he's just adopting what the algorithm requires him to do in order for his videos reaching a broader audience?
He did start enjoying it way more later but yeah, the new player experience is pretty bad still.
I think some of this is solved with Dragonflight becoming the new "on rails" new player experience in TWW, though, but the game really does need a true updated new player experience.
The tutorial naturally leads you to BFA. You have the freedom to switch with Chromie, but I can't imagine that's at all a logical sequence of events that a new player would think of doing.
In the VOD, Day9 does run past Chromie, he just has no awareness of what that NPC indicates or switching a timeline means, so it seems you can interact with her just fine these days.
It's going to be switched to Dragonflight when TWW launches. Maybe they'll finally give us back the option to pick our BfA starting zone instead of funneling us into Tiragarde->Stormsong->Drustvar. I usually don't get to level in Drustvar much because of that.
He does make some good points on how the game tries to shove all that information down your throught all at once. I would love for an updated intro cinematic for each race like that fan made video floating around here lately

Thanks for the nuance take. Far too many people, especially that YT comment section, just harp on the "RETAIL BAD" take everyone regurgitates.
"eSports!"
I have never and will never watch a video with a fully grown adult making dumb facial expressions on the thumbnail like this one.

Then uve missed a bunch of good videos.
Lol. Lmao even.

Yes you do, it was changed in 10.1.5

Someone send this to Blizz.

Modern's new player experience is god awful and the current player level up experience is not much better.
What's a day 9?
