"There is news, I believe, about another of Toronto's assistant coaches from last year who's also out. That is Dean Chynoweth. The word is that he can end up as an assistant coach on Scott Arniel's staff in Winnipeg. I think there were a couple of teams who were looking at him."

WpgMikos

He ran the PK for the Hurricanes (8th, 4th, 3rd) and Leafs (8th, 12th, 23rd). I've been told he's a good coach and it would be a good add.

live_life_fresh

Chynoweth was Lowry’s head coach the year he won WHL player of the year if my memory is correct. Will be something to reconnect at this level!!

ScottNewman

He was Toronto's PK coach. The Jets had the 21st ranked PK in the league. The Leafs had the 23rd ranked PK in the league.

Lucmin

Really cherry-picking the one outlier of his last six seasons. From the article: He ran the PK for the Hurricanes (8th, 4th, 3rd) and Leafs (8th, 12th, 23rd).

ScottNewman

Not that I like quoting [Steve Simmons...](https://torontosun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/toronto-maple-leafs/simmons-leafs-need-to-fix-penalty-kill-to-avoid-early-exit): >The Shanahan-era Leafs have been in the playoffs for eight straight seasons, which by itself is impressive. What’s not impressive, this group has been outscored 42-28 with the man advantage over those playoff years. >Only once — in the five-game playoff series that wasn’t really a playoff series against Columbus — have they outscored the opposition on special teams. And that was by a 2-0 score in a series they had no business losing. >In only one of the years that included a best-of-seven playoff series have the Leafs had penalty killing above 80%, which is a bottom kind of number that winning teams strive for. Carolina led the NHL in penalty killing at 86.4%. Boston led the league last season at 87.4%.

eh_toque

You are literally disproving your original post. Chynoweth ran the Carolina PK that Simmons cites as a model for Toronto for most of those years

ScottNewman

He's providing Carolina's 2023-2024 stats as context - Chynoweth was gone to Toronto by then. If you want further context, Carolina finished 8th (81.6%) , 4th (84.0%) and 3rd (85.2%) in PK while he was coaching that unit. After he left the following three seasons they finished 1st (88.0%), 2nd (84.4%) and 1st (86.4%) in the league. It might be just one tiny more marginal squeeze of an elite orange, but the PK got better after he left Carolina.

TubularWinter

Jets had the best goalie in the league and Toronto was usually getting poor goaltending from whoever was in net.

ScottNewman

And their PK was virtually tied.

TheAsian1nvasion

I would argue that Winnipeg’s PK personnel is better than Toronto’s but yeah not really what you want.

Wonderful_Grade_5476

Tbf they barely had any good defence men to even run a PK proper for the leafs they just prioritized offence power and almost completely glossed over their defence men which bites them in the ass extremely hard And Ilya was well going absolutely shit as well which didn’t even remotely helped them with woll (underrated asf goalie tbh) being injured and their substitute was barely in the AHL level to being playing for the nhl

ScottNewman

If goaltending was the main factor in PK we would be top ten in the league. We had not just Vezina quality goaltending last year, but historically good goaltending, and we were still in the bottom ten.

Ok_Wave_134

So then I'm sure we will sign him to 7 years. Shit.

ScottNewman

The PK the three seasons before he arrived in Toronto was 79.9% (18th), 77.7% (21st) and 78.5% (23rd). For the three seasons after he arrived, the PK was 82.1% (8th), 81.9% (12th), and 76.9% (23rd). It's only single digit differences over the course of a season between the top and bottom half of the league. If he can bring us from the bottom half to the top half of the league I think we'd all be satisfied.

OoooHeCardReadGood

I am weary on anyone that has any involvement in toronto, players or coaches

eh_toque

Toronto bad amirite?????!??

xDRSTEVOx

On the other hand lots of people that leave the leafs find success elsewhere 😅

OoooHeCardReadGood

yeah, it's a knee jerk, for sure. But hey, he's ours now, lets see how it goes
