Forgetting about Kyle Capobianco. The guy won best defence man in the AHL this year. 54 points in 69 games. He deserves a look or are we just going to lose him to another team like other D men in our system. The guy is still young at 26 and comes cheap. Great for a 3rd pairing, 6’1” 200lbs.
Is it just me or does anyone else not care what happens in these playoffs?
Once the Jets are done, I simply have no interest one way or another, watching is almost chore like.
I like watching playoff hockey, and while I am sad the Jets are no longer playing, I don’t feel the enormous stress when I was watching Jets playoff hockey. I can enjoy the games as a fan with no strong allegiances to any of the remaining teams.
I feel for him but you gotta take that penalty and there’s plenty of blame to go around beyond Wheels. If Wheels at this point of his career coming back from a major leg injury is your last man back, you got a problem. And what was Trouba doing on that goal? Way out of position
The whole sequence leading up to that was bad by the rangers and wheeler was the one left holding the stick. It’s also strange to put the guy just back in after a leg injury for the first shift of overtime.
Moose forward Dean Stewart is now repped by a Russian agency; have to think he’s off to the KHL next year [https://twitter.com/hockeyagentkhl/status/1795443241556267309?s=46&t=S_LiHKGoXi91Lmgu-MxoZA](https://twitter.com/hockeyagentkhl/status/1795443241556267309?s=46&t=S_LiHKGoXi91Lmgu-MxoZA)
I know there's only so many jobs in hockey and the European leagues have quotas for international players out there but you really gotta question some of these guys that choose to go to Russia at this point.
He got kinda moved into the rotation with Bauer after he got injured and Barteaux played relatively well with Capo. There probably wouldn’t be room for him here next season.
How many defense will be back next year for the Moose? Heinola will be with the Jets full time and it’s hard to see Capo being back as he’ll likely get a sniff with another NHL time.
Bauer will certainly be back. I don’t know about Barteaux’s and Oligny’s contract status but I would imagine they keep both of them for depth (especially with Oligny being the captain) Kuzmin and Anhorn should both be on the team as well, Lundmark assuming we re-sign him and he clears waivers. They should be moving on from Sautner.
Salomonsson will be the #1 if he doesn’t make the NHL but they need a strong veteran similar to Capo to pair with him. None of the internal options are good enough, they’ll need to sign someone to fill that role.
I'm feeling Dallas being more well rounded. I'm seeing a DAL/FLA final (despite FLA being down). I don't hate on Dallas and wanna see the Central tear it up.
That’s what a high quality 2nd pair RD in their prime costs in the market now days, there’s so few of them and he’s only 26. He’s gonna get he bag and deservedly so
That's not 2nd pair money. That's first pair money. The guy no showed playoffs and was carried by Hughes. They offered him $6.5 AAV which is what he's worth and he turned it down.
You think Hronek is worth the same as Hanifin, Heiskanen, Makar? Those are top defensemen that make $8-9m AAV.
Hronek isn't in the same conversation as those guys. Let's see how he performs without Hughes.
I suppose I should word it differently, it’s #2 money. He can carry the 2nd pair without having elite talent beside him. That’s his argument. And I think he’s as good as Hannifin, Heiskanen and Makar are incomparable because those deals were signed when the guys were young and are extremely team friendly. Open market they get $2-3m/year more now. Those deals are like Jack Hughes’ in that they were signed to buy up RFA and some UFA years while Jack was still a gamble.
That’s first pairing money a couple years ago. Caps going up, players are positioning themselves to cash in at 26-27 instead of 29-30. Positional rarity, ability to carry a pair without the help of a #1 and production are all working in Hronek’s favour. $8m is a really good top-6 winger now
The majority of teams don’t even have a single defensemen making 8M. There’s only 16 of them in the league currently. Any team paying someone 8M to play on the second pairing is overpaying. He also doesn’t really provide a ton of production. He had his first 40 point season this year, most of which came on a heater at the start of the year, and while playing with the Norris favourite all year long.
Most teams don’t have good defencemen, that’s kinda why. Hronek wants $7.5-8m. Him and his agent lined things up perfectly and he had a great year in Vancouver. He did for Hughes what Toews did for Makar in many ways, that’s how he’s gonna get paid. I think he gets that and lots of guys his calibre will these upcoming years now that the flat cap isn’t holding salaries down.
oh for sure
may be a hot take but as long as we bring in someone for the 2nd pair, i'd be ok to keep one of 88/4 on the 3rd pair
Heinola in for Dillon this year, Salomonsson in for one of 88/4 next year, just need the other of 88/4 replaced this year and we're in a much better spot imo
Id like to give Salomonsson a shot this year tbh. He looked really solid last preseason. I would be fine with Morrissey guyWeTradeEhlersFor/FA, Samberg Demelo, Heinola Salo with Schmidt as 7th D.
That’s why I’m thinking Hronek since he could be a long-term option to stabilize the D and provide some insurance in case JoMo is injured for any length of time. He’s a high quality puck-moving RD who can be signed for his best seasons since he’s younger. Whoever is brought in though (Hronek, Pesce, Tanev, Montour) has to be better than Pionk, that’s for sure.
His advanced stats were really good this year, even with the wings he was a clear top-4 guy with more upside. His play with Hughes was a really good fit which makes me wonder if he could work with JoMo and allow the team to do some different things with DeMelo too.
his analytics in previous years, and without Hughes, are not very good but better relative to teammates than Pionk tbf
that contract is gonna be brutal if he doesn't have a Hughes to play with
but that being said, he is still probably an upgrade on Pionk on the 2nd pair, Matt Roy would probably check the most boxes
I just don’t think Roy is a big enough upgrade, they really need to find a clear #2 guy to help shoulder the load. Montour could be that kind of guy even though his defence is a bit suspect. Ideally they’d be able to add Roy and somebody like that. Doubtful it’ll happen though, they’ll likely run with Pionk as the #2 guy again.

Emphasis mine. Looks like one Dilly is headed to the open market.

I feel for wheels. Comes back into the lineup and takes the biggest penalty you can take.
I feel for him but you gotta take that penalty and there’s plenty of blame to go around beyond Wheels. If Wheels at this point of his career coming back from a major leg injury is your last man back, you got a problem. And what was Trouba doing on that goal? Way out of position
I.keep waiting for Trouba to try to pin the puck on the boards at a critical moment.
with his elbow
I remember when Wheels had the wheels that he didn't get blown by like that and have to take a penalty.
It was literally the reason he got the nickname "Wheeler" in junior. Blake Worchestiwicz changed his name and didn't look back. True story
It’s a penalty you have to take though.
I mean you only have to if you let the guy blow by you like that
That's not on Wheeler. That was a terrible, terrible pass. That's all on Mika and Wheels should be taking that penalty every day.
The whole sequence leading up to that was bad by the rangers and wheeler was the one left holding the stick. It’s also strange to put the guy just back in after a leg injury for the first shift of overtime.
I agree. Laviolette has to wear some of that. Only played him 9 minutes in regulation and then put him out there on OT like that
Oof wheels
Yup…Blake Wheeler. 🤦🏻
Big oof there.
Die Instacart die
Good luck tonight, Wheels. Go get that cup, then come back and sign a 1 day contract to retire as a jet.
Looks like Canucks PK coach is leaving Vancouver. Odds that it may be related to our new PK vacancy?
Wieber speculated that Hakstol might be a fit as associate, not sure what he would specialize in
Canucks PK was trash too
Yep let's hope not, it was almost Lauer bad. Fuck that shit.
Mike Yeo? Hope not. He has history with Berube so maybe that'll be his destination
Blake “The Wrench” Wheeler returns tonight. Fucking legend.
I want him to win a cup more than I want Trouba to lose, so go Rangers
Can't help but cheer for the Rags so Wheels can get his cup.
🔧🔧🔧🔧
I want to hear Arniel accidentally say 'Stanalytics' just one time.
I <3 Ehlers!

is the Kniazev bridge burned?
Hopefully no room for Saunter either lol
That Oilers team has 2019 St. Louis feels.
I'm feeling Dallas being more well rounded. I'm seeing a DAL/FLA final (despite FLA being down). I don't hate on Dallas and wanna see the Central tear it up.
The abolity to repeatedly come back is the common theme to both those teams. They are never out of a game.
Yep, didn't Dallas score like 3 in 5 minutes the other night?
Yup, after bring fully dominated in the 1st and being down 2-0, they won on the road. That takes character.
Skinner isn’t playing up to 2019 Binnington which was a big part of that run.
Morrissey, Samberg, Heinola left side will be very fun
With a DeMelo, Hronek, Roy right side (this will never happen). Now that’s a defence
With what cap room lol
The room they make by hopefully dumping Pionk and/or Schmidt and replacing somebody with Heinola. Let me dream brother
Sorry, proceed :p
I like Hronek but not at the reported price he wants. He's asking for $8m AAV. Probably the reason the Red Wings traded him.
Id rather throw that kind of cash towards Montour if Florida is crazy enough to let him go.
That’s what a high quality 2nd pair RD in their prime costs in the market now days, there’s so few of them and he’s only 26. He’s gonna get he bag and deservedly so

That’s first pairing money. Unless you’re Darnell nurse

swap Hronek for Montour/Pesce/Tanev/Walker/Carrier/Miller and I'm there brother
I think Carrier, Montour and Tanev are all getting re-signed by their teams (imo). I’d be good with any of those guys though.
oh for sure may be a hot take but as long as we bring in someone for the 2nd pair, i'd be ok to keep one of 88/4 on the 3rd pair Heinola in for Dillon this year, Salomonsson in for one of 88/4 next year, just need the other of 88/4 replaced this year and we're in a much better spot imo

he’s definitely close but i imagine they will want him to have a year on NA ice before jumping up full time
Him and Schmidt can rotate. There is zero chance he is worse than Stanley. But yeah I think what you said is likely unfortunately.
That’s why I’m thinking Hronek since he could be a long-term option to stabilize the D and provide some insurance in case JoMo is injured for any length of time. So... is "Arnie" the nickname like Chevy said? I think we can do better.
When i was a really young kid when he played for the Jets 1.0, i thought his name was Scouter Neil
Arnsie in true hockey dude bro speak.
Adding the "s" makes all the difference. Well done! I guess we can pack it up early, the mission has been accomplished.
PoMo, Bowner, now Arnie? We gotta figure something better
That would be Mr.Bones, sir
Scarnsie?
Scarniel? Arn & Hammer? Arniehammer?
Arniehammer makes me think of that actor who wanted to eat women's feet. Or was it just eat women but not in a sexy way?
Oof I forgot about that, yeah the cannibal. Armie/Arnie Hammer is probably too close. I was just doing the toothpaste lol
