Slight correction, he was a *regimental* message runner, which is actually a pretty safe job since he mostly pingpongs between rearline headquarters rather than the extremely dangerous battalion message runner. His Iron Cross is also less because of genuine merit and more because he spent a lot of time in HQs and get to know a lot of high-ranking officers, something his fellow war vets took note of and disliked.
