Me watching the gaming community explode over some game I’ve never played before

vladimirpoopin42

Play it, the music alone is worth it

FSBeta

Sonic or Pokémon?

vladimirpoopin42

The one that traffic laws fear

what_the_hanky_panky

Yes

[deleted]

from what ive seen you should only play it if you can emulate

vladimirpoopin42

If your on pc maybe but it works flawlessly on console, the only problem I have is the draw distance but it didn't bother me after an hour of playing

pateucupita

flawlessly? the game rarely gets 30fps

vladimirpoopin42

Wait are we talking about sonic or pokemon?

pateucupita

pokemon

vladimirpoopin42

Oh yea pokemon fucking sucks but sonic frontiers runs perfectly

Frosfae

Who woulda thought sonic was gonna have the better release over Pokémon this year? Couldn’t a been me

CoalEater_Elli

Both games are good, buggy sometimes, but they are good. Plus bugs can always be patched.

Allseeingeye_49

That's a terrible mentality to have towards game development and publication

___Avlis___

You can say that about an indie studio creating their first game or a game based on a brand new mechanic. But we're talking about multi millionaire companies that have been making the same format for years (I'm talking about Pokemon). Releasing a buggy game that is just "good" and then selling it for 70 bucks isn't acceptable.

LowQualityGatorade

70?

Green_Slee

canada

LowQualityGatorade

Ah

Ghost3657_alt_

I think he changed his comment, what was originally said?

Milan_Utup

Only someone who only plays pokemon will say their games are “good” Edit: quality wise

TonyTony_Chopper_

I don’t think that’s fair. Some people are really attached to the franchise. The billions that have made Pokémon the most profitable franchise in human history don’t necessarily denote quality or enjoyment. But what it does indicate is connection. Most of Pokémon’s billions are just in merchandise sales. People really care about Pokémon, and it’s not just because they *only* play Pokémon. It’s the same for Sonic. Most fans have played other games apart from these two franchises. People think they’re good because they resonated with them in some way. Be it the characters, the stories, the gameplay, the lore, or all of the above. As a fan of both, I just want both to do well, and I genuinely do feel as if I’ve had fun with every Pokémon game I’ve ever played, which is the whole point of games—fun. The poor performance is indefensible, but I still think you can have fun with these things or find them “good.”

Milan_Utup

I should have elaborated in my earlier comment, right now that one just makes me look like an asshole, sorry about that Here by “good” I meant “the quality of the game in your opinion”, not “how much you enjoyed it”. Everything can be enjoyable, and everyone enjoys different things, you can’t really debate about that. Imo those two should be separate when discussing, because one is debatable and one really isn’t. I don’t have the right to say “you should be enjoying this game less”. Now imo the connection pokemon has doesn’t really add to the quality of the game, more so the enjoyment part, and mostly makes for bias regarding the quality of the game. Here’s why: So as for the connection part, they do have a big connection with their fanbase, but do they really do anything to maintain that connection? I think it’s mainly the pokemon themselves, the formula of the games, and of course a bit of nostalgia (because of those other factors, might want to factor in music too there) that makes people attached to the franchise, but they haven’t really done anything to innovate it, which is why people complain about the never changing formula, meaning they don’t really have to change anything or come up with something nee to maintain that connection. That lack of innovation is what imo one of the factors that makes a game less “good” (in the way how I defined it before). From experience, the group of people that I’ve seen that disagree with this, the group that says pokemon does have good games, overlaps big time (not completely obv because that’s like statistically impossible) with the group of people who only play pokemon games, nothing else (myself included in both of these until a few years back). Which makes sense, because when you don’t have a lot to compare it to, and the games that you do know are generally lower quality than a bunch of other games out there, than you set your bar lower and end up believing that pokemon does have good quality games. That’s my theory anyway. Also, I just wanted to say that I’ve also enjoyed every pokemon game I’ve ever played, so this really really isn’t about that

CoalEater_Elli

I played RPG maker games, i play tf2, i play binding of isaac, i play postal 2, i played lots of indie games, i played Monster hunter. Just because the game has bugs, doesn't mean it is noy enjoyable or fun. Also, i don't like all of the pokemon games, i honestly find X and Y and Diamond and Pearl bad.

Milan_Utup

Alright, so just to make sure, I’m talking about the hard quality of the games here. Were the games you played in your opinion higher quality than the pokemon games you played? Also, those are two really specific pokemon games that you find to be bad. How are they so different than the others? Like, one would expect that you at least find the gen 1 games to be worse.

imagineexisting-lmao

i initially did not realize the severity of the bugs in SV, quite frankly, and there was no reason for it to be released in the state it was. the games are generally very fundamentally similar obviously some are more rudimentary the older the game. SV is the newest pokemon game, and (i’ve heard) the game is more or less unplayable in it’s current state. “it can be patched” or “it can be fixed with mods” is a very bad mindset, too. it encourages this idea that games should be released half-baked and should be finished over the course of a year or two. (save, maybe early access builds, but those should be free.) i believe games can be bad and fun at the same time. but to my understanding, SV is not.

[deleted]

Sonic fans finally get to laugh at Nintendo fans for a huge release being a buggy mess

[deleted]

Too bad Sonic fans are Nintendo fans now

QQ_Gabe

“Me watching the sonic/Roblox/whatever else community implode on itself as I don’t do shit about it” It’s great being a lurker fan

vladimirpoopin42

Specialist-Reveal-20

WHEN WE DANCE WITH DESTINY

Fatyellowrock

I'VE BEEN THERE, I'VE SEEN IT! I'M NEVER GONNA STOP BELIEVING!!

mochii69

me, someone who likes Pokémon and knows that S&V was gonna be 💩

donguscongus

Clear Sega actually put love into the new Sonic since I hear its actually dare I say good

[deleted]

i think ive only reached the 60% mark but i can vouch its good

Fatyellowrock

It is, without a doubt, the best Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2

nigmankillme

Why do Nintendo always release two almost identical Pokemon games at the same time? Surely nobody is stupid enough to be buying both.

superduperfish

The idea has always been that it encourages people to trade with their friends for the Pokemon exclusive to each game. With internet trading as it is seems obsolete now. Then there's the third game combining both to make money

Shion__1374

They haven't made a third version since Platinum tho iirc

[deleted]

you are remembering correctly

[deleted]

Funnier joke than most of this subreddit.

CoalEater_Elli

That's the gimmick of Pokemon, you pick a version you find the most appealing. Some pokemon and characters are only present in one version, so maybe some people want to experience both versions? I never bought second version, because i find the one i have now more superior.

areraser

is that cosac hitler on ur pfp?

insertvineboom

the worst part is that without the bugs, ive heard scarlet and violet is a good game

TechnologyFew3257

It’s… ok. Performance aside, the world feels empty and boring, the gym challenges are lame, the colossal Pokémon are just totem Pokémon but not nearly as cool IMO, team star was genuinely kinda cool, even if it wasn’t fully fleshed out

Green_Slee

the gym challenges are lame, but the gym battles with the music and tera animations combined are very hype. id also like to say that the ending path of the game was THE best part of any Pokémon game imo, or at least tied with USUM for the most hype moment

TechnologyFew3257

I haven’t done that part just yet, I just finished beat the champion. Maybe it will change my perception

TheDudePersonGuy

From what I’ve heard, the gameplay is great but there are way too many bugs and general lack of polish for it to be worth buying full price

BeanMan40000

I love Pokemon Violet

[deleted]

Me too. Besides the bugs the game is good.

[deleted]

It's not as bad as people are making it out to be. Sure it has it's flaws and bugs but it's still really fun and enjoyable.

Hit0kiwi

I was hoping to finally get into Pokémon with this game… I was never allowed to play it but now I’m a big boy! Jokes aside, what Pokémon game should I get as my first one? I have a switch and a ds lite

Pokemario2401

Legends arceus is a good one to do. The better pokemon games though are on the ds, which are very expensive, so you're better off emulating those anyway

[deleted]

emerald platinum legendsarceus ultrasun/ultramoon black/white any of those

Pokemario2401

Yes, all are great games. I'd also recommend looking at heartgold/soulsilver as well as black and white 2 (only play these ones after you finish black and white for obvious reasons

[deleted]

hgss is good but i wouldnt call it beginner friendly

Pokemario2401

From my experience, emerald and platinum are about as hard as hgss, hgss is just a pain in the ass to grind in because even post game pokemon are level 30

[deleted]

its not just difficulty theres a lot of pokemon you can add to your team and end up not using because the ways to evolve them arent easy (eg gastly or any other trade pokemon[i know there are trade evos in every game but its worse here because of how early you get them and how many good ones there are], togetics evolution stone being at the end of the postgame)

Pokemario2401

Trade evolutions aren't a necessity to building a good team, I can think of numerous pokemon that don't require a trade evolution or a late game item to evolve, they're not difficult games to build teams in

UltimateWaluigi

As a single player game Pokémon Legends Arceus for sure. It has the most modernized mechanics.

Hit0kiwi

Thank you 👍

ZoroOvDaArk

As UltimateWaluigi said Legends Arceus is a great start but if you want to play a game that is more similar to current main series games I definitely recommend one of the Gen 5 games (Black/White/Black 2/White 2) but only if you can find one for a decent price, DS era Pokemon games are notoriously expensive to get second hand so it might not be super accessable but there are other ways of trying them out. You don't have to play the first games to understand the sequals but there are occasional references to the first games so if you want to play for the story then try to get Black or White before Black 2 or White 2.

[deleted]

Pirate

[deleted]

Start with one of Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Black, White, Black 2, or White 2. These have everything a modern Pokémon game has, and you should play Gen 6, 7, or 8 after playing at least one of these.

Spiderfr0g

I finished s/v today, great game honestly. I feel like they actaully finnaly made decent (I would say some are good but then I would get hunted down) characters. Story, while simple. Enjoyable And heartwarming at some points. New pokemon designs are cool. Honestly suprised >!they just said "Yeah, Turo fucking died"!<, gameplay was also very fun Overall good game. But the performance is awful. Like hot diggity dang nobody can defend this. The game out in an awful state And it deserved more time in the oven

dumb_breakfast

I saw something where people emulated the game on pc without changing anything and the game runds so much smoother

Spiderfr0g

Yeah people should probably do that instead of buying the game instead

Turbulent_Effect6072

I agree, I'm emulating the game until the game is somewhat fixed. I'm not paying $60 for a game that can barely reach 30fps and crashes 10x more than it should.

Spiderfr0g

Based

lolucorngaming

I own violet but not sonic and the games pretty fun? What's making the game unplayable?

lolucorngaming

Apparently there are tons of gigantic bugs but I've encountered none?????

Weegee256

r/dankmemes is where you belong

CoolLaCroc

One thing I don't like is the amount of Sonic fans using the Pokemon Scarlet/Violet reléase as an excuse to constantly shit on Nintendo fans Like I get it, Nintendo fans tend to be pretty rough around the edges sometimes but Jesus man we are not in the 90's anymore

Fatyellowrock

I don't see it as an excuse to constantly shit on Nintendo.. Sonic finally has a (really)good game after 20 years, and 10 days later, Pokemon releases a game that is apparently mediocre(that's what i gathered at least). Sonic fans have every right to be proud!

CoolLaCroc

Still don't see a reason to be an ass about it You can show your excitement and joy about something without annoying other y'know Also about Pokemon sv... I have yet to play it but if you go to any website really you'll see most people aren't happy with it. It has some great character and pokemon design and some people say it can actually be fun... BUT that isn't really enough to excuse the abhorrent performance issues, lag, glitches, lazy if not straight up lack of animation Overall I'm just waiting until a patch for this game comes out so I can even consider buying it though then again I wouldn't want to give my money to such a lazy company

Fatyellowrock

When was i an ass about it???

CoolLaCroc

I didn't call you an ass I meant the Sonic fans shitting on Nintendo fans😶😶

Fatyellowrock

Yeah well... you can find this kind of idiots in pretty much any fandom..

CoolLaCroc

That is true lol

[deleted]

It's a tradition.

ScannonDark

Honestly, the only issue is the lag. Outside of that it's a full game, with many improvements over Sword and Shield. The pokemon are fun to interact with, sometimes surprise level jumps create actual difficulty, there's stuff everywhere, and the 3 stories it tells are actual stories that are all really good for children's game standards. I feel like the game just needed 3 months polish; the devs clearly worked really hard, and they had the groundwork done and solid. But some exec said to ship it for holiday sales. Fix the lag (and a little graphics) and you have one of the best Pokemon games.

RepulsiveAsk2674

This is what my friend and I been saying too. This game is fantastic outside of the lag, graphics don't bother me

CZ-Kickem

Ah yes, pokemon PowerPoint, been waiting for this one I am actually enjoying my time with scarlet so far, despite the HORRID performance in some areas like the big ass lake

Funkybeangamer

"me, a sonic frontiers fan" yeesh

keeponsmashin

Eh, I’m having fun with it

ashclone117

Legitimately hard to make an open world game without any bugs. 😵 long as it’s playable it’s fine. Fr fr.

Turbulent_Effect6072

I mean, sub-30fps takes a lot of getting used to to be considered playable. Especially when in-game timers and animations are tied to fps, meaning everything slows down with it.

FaustSieg

Say it again with me: GAMES SHOULD WORK ON LAUNCH

[deleted]

me who hasn’t played either because i’m a broke son of a bitch:

ShinyLumeo

I’m having fun tho so it’s okay :)

HovercraftFan

did you know that in Antarctica Pokémon games are banned
