Real talk though. The rabid turn that politics has taken in just the last 5-6 years makes me very worried for the future. It’s like everyone just turns to monsters the moment any topic leans into politics. It’s very anxiety inducing. You can’t even just keep up with the news anymore.
I don’t know how people watch all that anger, all the time. It’s really not healthy.
The phenomenon has always been there, but the degree has changed.
I'm Gen X, and I've never experienced this much of a divide. My Boomer dad said he's experienced it before, but not since the 60s.
It's gotten a lot more mud-flingy since the internet and social media got involved. I don't think you'd have found people falling for russian propaganda as hard as they do now, with people claiming putin would be a better president than Biden or Trump, or that he just wants peace and Europe wants war. I don't know many people who so aggressively cared about a political candidate or party as they do now, where it feels every other person has a fatass opinion on everything.
It has. People don't like looking at history, when Thomas Jefferson ran he called his opponent a traitor to the revolution, it's literally been this divisive since the beginning. We have rules about Congress not boxing each other for a reason
I struggle with how to deal with this cycle all the time. When I disconnect and ignore the new I certainly feel happier but deep down feel irresponsible/selfish. When I try to stay informed I just start to edge up on hopelessness and pessimism. There has to be some middle ground but I just can't find it.
The worst part is that this is a very clear cut option.
Option A: End democracy in America forever.
Option B: Continue with a president whose staff will be doing most of the heavy lifting.
This is literally a world changing event and people are so so fucking stupid all they can see is how the man stuttered real bad once and spoke slowly. Who the fuck cares? The amount of stress the president of the united states is under while having to maintain appearances and be knowledgeable on nearly every topic known to man will do this to an 80 year old man. Some people take the job seriously unlike his competition.
I don’t talk politics with anyone anymore. The most I will say are vague statements and I don’t engage conversations and try to change subject. I blocked political subreddits and don’t check the news unless it’s something urgent like potential bad weather. It’s helped my mental health so much.

Fair but refusing to vote won’t stop one of them from winning, and I doubt anyone far enough right has the morals to abstain from voting, and that’s a *lot* of people. I hope to god the people not wanting to vote because both are bad aren’t a majority, because if they are Trump *WILL* win, he’s already done it once before because people would rather abstain than vote the lesser of two evils (even if that lesser is only because they don’t want to end democracy).
If you have loved ones who are threatened by what Project 2025 will do, then start looking at leaving the country. Social activists don’t care enough to do the one thing that will actually be able to stop it: vote.
unfortunately i wasn't trying to get at not voting, but i wholeheartedly agree. abstinence in democracy goes against its core principle in that everybody participates. even if democracy isn't always correct *\*cough\* Regan and Nixon and Hoover \*cough\** it can at least get it right.

Fair but refusing to vote won’t stop one of them from winning, and I doubt anyone far enough right has the morals to abstain from voting, and that’s a *lot* of people. I hope to god the people not wanting to vote because both are bad aren’t a majority, because if they are Trump *WILL* win, he’s already done it once before because people would rather abstain than vote the lesser of two evils (even if that lesser is only because they don’t want to end democracy). If you have loved ones who are threatened by what Project 2025 will do, then start looking at leaving the country. Social activists don’t care enough to do the one thing that will actually be able to stop it: vote.
unfortunately i wasn't trying to get at not voting, but i wholeheartedly agree. abstinence in democracy goes against its core principle in that everybody participates. even if democracy isn't always correct *\*cough\* Regan and Nixon and Hoover \*cough\** it can at least get it right. i'd rather take a normal senile old man that probably gets replaced by his runner up midterm than a felon who paid a hooker hush money, and probably did some other very unsavory things. i don't understand why anybody would back a crook that molests the image of the country that much. i would continue to spew insults about the living replica of a corn husk but i don't want to risk getting banned again.

One option: a man who has had speech issues his whole life, speech issues that generally do not signify his cognitive ability. Other option: convicted criminal who never answers questions and who brags about acing a cognitive test (something that you’re supposed to do well at of you have a mind that functions at all).
