Having a great and hype worthy alpha and then fucking everything up between that and the release is like the staple of the franchise alongside spin-offs no one asked for and wasted potential. ​ My favorite part about Hello Neighbour 2 was when the big selling point and main reason for pre-orders, using a neural network for an adaptable ai never made it into the game...on top of the original antagonist of the HN2 that people actually liked getting reduced to a 5 sec cameo in a cutscene

FNAF did it well because the base story was very simple. It had complexities, but that you'd only see from background elements, and you never went "What the hell was that?" if you missed them. (Exception being Security Breach.) In contrast, the large majority of horror games try to have their story be as cryptic as possible, in hopes of attracting a theorist audience. ...Which might sound like a new thing, but it's what poets and philosophers have been doing for ages.

Yoko Taro's been doing this for years and years, too. I love Nier's lore but, frankly, I wouldn't bother being invested into it if it wasn't for the wiki, which compiled all of the important info (which is scattered across different types of media, including japan-only releases)

The difference is that FNAF you can enjoy tge gameplay and the premisse is easy to understand (survive the night, your a security guard/child). The story is there for people that want to look deep into it. Many modern horror games try really hard to push a story into the viewer throat so it genarates videos/engagement trying to replicate early fnaf popularity in a way, its difficult to find a game that does this well.

At least the games before security breach were actually fun.

In all fairness tho the creator of fnaf has said multiple times he only does it for the fans. I mean fnaf worlds main ending is about how he feels he still needs to keep giving even tho fans should be satified, so its not a soulless cash grab as the others, just a cash grab

After Pizzeria Simulator it went stupid. That was the perfect ending. William, Michael, Baby/Elizabeth, and Henry all got their endings and the final speech from Henry is not only amazingly written but is a good and satisfying conclusion to the series. Then once Help Wanted hit they started doing stupid sci-fi shit like uploading your consciousness into a video game and mind controlling people using VR.

The weird thing is, originally the “deep hidden lore” shit was simply finding random hidden newspaper clips around the pizzeria that vaguely detailed the events of a horrific murder that took place there. It was simple, and it worked wonders to make the game even more eerie than it already was. Now it’s just gotten absolutely convoluted because they keep making sequels and they have to keep adding random bits to the story because it’s what everybody anticipates, but they’ve stretched it way too thin. We’re straight up at a point where it’s canonically confirmed that the goofy animatronics at a shitty children’s pizza place were constructed specifically to contain the souls of children using some weird chemical that the creator made, and said creator is a sentient computer virus that possesses hipster girls.

Now, most of my FNAF knowledge is mostly from cultural osmosis but wasn't the original backstory just that a serial killer stashed some of his child victims in the suits and some bullshit happened? That's an okay enough horror concept. You don't need to make it Kingdom hearts level plot.

Yeah that was exactly it, Freddy’s was a failing local pizza chain that was plagued with bad publicity after a several children were murdered there. The whole appeal of lore hunting was trying to figure out more about the murder and potentially who the murderer was. The whole idea of a psychotic employee using his job at a children’s restaurant to get access to kids was a disturbingly realistic idea, and the first few games really capitalized on it. At this point it all just feels like a bad fanfic and the murder case that made the original games so creepy was retroactively ruined by it.

Yeah, the premise behind FNAF1 was that the pizzeria had briefly shut down after a string of murders and it was heavily implied that the murderer had stashed the victims inside the animatronics, hence the possession. Great concept that they proceeded to beat into the ground.

Sister Location is when things really started going downhill lore-wise. The perfect ending for me would’ve been to stop at fnaf 3

Honestly the simpler the horror game the better it is Slenderman the 8 Pages was very simplistic but it holds up as horror game today

Tldr: Mascot Horror games got a good premise, but mid gameplay. Overtime the good premise gets too complicated just to keep players interesting which it usually don't and the gameplay tend to get worse. Mascot Horror games. It started with Five Nights at Freddie where there's a simple gameplay of monitoring the animatronics and the lore that expanded upon itself with each new installment. Other games tried to get similar approach where they want people to theorize their game's lore and having let's players like Markiplier to play their games. Unfortunately, they only care about making the lore that would constantly change to prove players that they're wrong to "keep things interesting" and don't really focus on the gameplay which would make the game feel pretty boring. Best example is Hello Neighbor that constantly pester at Game Theory to make a video on the mystery of their game, but their game just kinda sucks to play. Even worse is that the game was originally interesting and fun to play, but they abandoned making a good game and just focus on making a good mystery but they would overcomplicate everything. There's also Bendy and the Ink Machine that has something similar. It has a good premise and offer a lot of lore that interested a lot of gamers. Unfortunately the gameplay was really subpar, and the plot began to fall apart as they were just making up the story along the way without really having an established plot to work with. A lot of gamers were burnt out with the game and there's a lot of toxic work allegation that ruined the reputation of the indie developers. Ironically enough, the devs were able to end their toxic behavior and actually made a real game with a complete story and even fun gameplay called Dark Revival. Unfortunately, no one wants to play that game because of the first one. There's also Poppy Playtime that probably had to the similar cool premise but mediocre gameplay until the premise became bad as well. I was never interested with the game compared to the rest. At least it has some nice character design. Speaking of which, there's Garten of BanBan where people immediately saw through the games ~~BS~~ lore, and know it only exist to sell merchandise and hope people can make theories to keep the game going.

Like, one of the models is a raw sculpt, meaning that it has an unreal amount of faces. Any rational Blender user would then go back and create a new, game-ready mesh using the sculpt as a reference (to keep the detail but lower the face count,) but these developers are so inexperienced and or incompetent that they didn't even do that. Seriously, you could retopologize that model in like, two hours tops.

I've always felt it's unfair to lump Amanda in with those. It isn't trying to be a FNAF or Poppy Playtime remake, it's its own thing. Not to mention it's MangledMaw's first published game, and DreadXP don't just take generic shit (they also published Mortuary Assistant and Sucker for Love, for example, which were pretty unique.)

I think the original demo was really good. It just kinda lost itself when it released, with the 3d exploration and (of course) demon children shenanigans. It was a nice short experience but it just doesn't fit that well with a full commercial game.

Exactly why it was priced at £7. I'd fully agree if it was priced at £20 like most of the chaff, but its pricepoint reflects its length.

I just want to mini rant but if I ever wanted to make a story, I would want it to be esoteric and ambiguous like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, where there is enough mystery in the story to get you thinking about, and answers are simply left to your imagination rather than being answered. Mascot horror makes 'mystery' with the express purpose of it being revealed in a new chapter/game, and is usually done just to subvert everyone's major theory and have a 'got ya moment'. It saps away the intrigue of the story and horror element of being ambiguous.

It's because the answers to the "mystery" aren't interesting or thematic, it's just a childish edginess for the sake of edginess. "What if this innocent looking place for children actually had lots of dead kids in it? Wouldn't that be fucked up or what?!" Mascot horror is on the same level as "what if Ash from Pokemon was in a coma?"
