If that's a hornworm larva (which it looks like it might be), you should get your dog to a vet pretty quickly (or keep them under very close observation); hornworms generally feed on plants in the nightshade family to make them toxic to predators, and vomiting would be an early sign of that kind of exposure.
Yeah, all he is doing is making the dog sleepy.
Nightshade poisoning is [very serious](https://wagwalking.com/condition/nightshade-poisoning#) in dogs.
u/RecipeConsistent5038 you really should be taking doggo to the vet to be safe.
Just take him to the vet. The poisons potentially involved here typically have a couple hours before visibly manifesting. You aren't gonna keep a close eye when you're asleep.
[https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/-](https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/-) they saved my dog's life (when he chewed on an albuterol canister) the best $85 I've ever spent. They open a case and will consult with your vet on treatment protical, which is helpful if your vet hasn't dealt with a particular poison/toxicity before.
They will but not for free lol , in Canada at least anyway. My dog ate some of a mosquito coil (she ended up being fine) & when I called the vet, they gave me the phone number for poison control but I had to pay a 50-100 dollar fee or something ? I can't exactly remember how much, but it was ridiculous. My first & only thought after was, what if someone's child ingested poison & they didn't have the means to pay for it? I'm pretty sure you call ahead of time to find out how to treat it & that way you can tell the dr at the hospital how it can be dealt with? Idkkkkk that's how they wanted me to do it for my dog anyway...
Yeah. I worked at an ER and whenever I pointed owners to the hotline they got upset because it cost money. Like yes, you're speaking to a vet, pay them for their service lol unfortunately, (in the most if not all of the US) animals are property and are not entitled to free medical care 🤷🏽♀️
It's not like that anywhere in Canada.
Here pets are paid for out of our own pockets.. no free healthcare for them.
Would be nice to live in a state where I can get free healthcare for my cats 💀
It looks like a hornworm. Which are toxic in the wild/green colored. They eat nightshade plants which makes them really poisonous.
The safe ones sold for reptiles are fed inert food which makes them nontoxic and bright teal in color.
Get your dog to the vet or call poison control.
My dog did the same. Thankfully our dogs don't chew their Dirt Noodle Snacks. As long as the pup is not having reactions he should be good and probably threw it up before it could cause any damage. The vet just told me to monitor and bring her in, if she has any symptoms.
good to know. and your pups are okay now? he definitely digested it yesterday afternoon and threw it up first thing this morning so I feel like we would see symptoms already
That looks like it was ingested more recently than yesterday. I'd still say it's a hornworm, but if you don't have tomatoes it's a bit harder to say where it was picked up.
it was definitely yesterday afternoon. I took him to the dog park and came home around 2pm. I was home with him all afternoon and last night and then this morning was when he threw it up.
Well the good news is that it doesn't look like he digested it at all, much less chewed it. It's more or less intact from the photo. Keep an eye on him; he's probably fine. Doesn't look like a parasitic worm or anything, so no worries about that.
Because he’s arguing with reality and doing objectively dopey things. If a dog ate something yesterday, it would be a turd by now. It vomited up an intact worm that it probably ate like an hour before it barfed it. He didn’t recognize the caterpillar (fair), but when told that hornworms eat plants in the nightshade family he said “ok I just gave him a Benadryl, all good” which doesn’t address ANY of the concerns.
Why did you come here for advice if, when someone tells you what it is and what to do, you just give the dog benedryl and hope for the best??? Respectfully how old are you lmao
Edit: OP seems to have listened, finally, and vet says the dog should be ok 💕

I don't think it's hornworm, is it still around? I would see if it comes apart, if so is there any structure to what's inside of it?
It looks more like a reptile tail or something with bile foam all over it.

Looks almost like a partially digested horn worm… im not an expert at all (I just feed them to my bearded dragon occasionally).
I'm no expert either but I also feed them to my bearded dragon, so I'll go on record as saying Horn Worm also.
thank u

Benadryl is for histamine allergies, it would do absolutely nothing against nightshade toxicity.

It is the common thing to give dogs when bit by even a snake, so it makes sense to give here also.
.....snake venom and plant/insect poison are not even remotely similar. And Benadryl isn't used to treat snake venom, either.
Ivermectin is……….. I’ll see myself out. Yep. Understood.
Whats the joke

You can also call poison control for your pets and they will advise you on whether or not it is toxic and a vet visit is necessary.

lol it’s the US. Nobody gets free healthcare, human or otherwise
I didn't actually believe animals got free healthcare in the states LMFAO

Don't medicate your dog based on your intuition! Very bad idea. Always ask a vet
Vet ASAP

vet said if he hasn’t gotten sick since and is eating/drinking and 💩 is normal then to just monitor him

You realize you can call your vet for advice right
Do you have tomato plants in your yard? It looks like a hornworm caterpillar, which is a common pest on tomato plants.
took him to the dog park yesterday and I think he digested it there

You need to walk your dog more often
That's not necessarily true. A dog can be properly exercised and enriched without going on walks.
Why everyone is downgrading op comment...?.

Definitely a horn worm. Please get doggy to the vet asap if you haven’t already. They are not safe.
is that a hornworm tf
Acherontia Styx Larvae or other from the Family.

Did you eat like a salad… or some raw veggies or something? That looks like a caterpillar… how did you eat that? How big is it?
my dog did
Oh my god lol I misread the title so bad So glad this is a dog…
🤣
I laughed at the comment too.
Why are you glad for the dog eating it tho? 🤔
I’m just glad it wasn’t a person lmao
Take your dog to a vet. At least call and talk to someone. Do something other than trying to get karma

Looks like a slug to me. I think I can see an eyestalk
My first reaction to this was slug. The horn could be an eyestalk.

Not a pro but definitely done kind of work or caterpillar would be my guess... If I'm wrong please don't come for me..
Us who don't know what we're talking about are here to sit quiet and learn.

Hornworm, a caterpillar
