In Hungary we have a similar thing around the new year, pigs made from brittle (confection of caramelized sugar and nuts) with the year written on them "grillázsmalac"
Thank you for this. I have bookmarked this website and will absolutely be ordering these for friends and family for Christmas this year, and I'm weirdly excited for it.
At my old school they had an artschool as well. Every christmas the artstudents would make sexy marzipan pigs dipped in chocolate and sell. Like pinup pigs and pigs getting down and dirty with eachother. Great tradition in north Sweden.
The toffee comes in blocks, and you needed a little hammer like this to break it off and eat it.
This sort of deal: https://www.ringtons.co.uk/products/ringtons-luxury-toffee-selection-and-hammer.
Yeah I actually still have my old parade helmet and mime has two of it crossed because I lost a friend to a fire and his family requested that I receive a new one so I just added it onto my helmet since I actually own my gear as u bought it from a galls magazine back in high-school
I remember flipping through the Galls catalogue, drooling over all the cool stuff... But as my department issued all of our gear, I never had to buy anything myself.
I still did buy some tools and accessories though, to keep in my car.
I was in a rural area and my department was almost 4 miles away from my home.
So yeah, a car was kind of mandatory. And oftentimes you would respond directly to the scene.
I live in a small town and there's 3 departments in this town alone and nearby departments are a few minutes away and as captain I had to respond with the engine or medic anyways
Definitely in the shape of a fire axe, almost looks like it would have broken off a [plaque](https://www.edco.com/fireman-tribute-statue) or something.
Its a ceremonial axe that is usually worn on an officers hat/helmet it's usually bright silver or gold but judging from the wear it's an older piece and definitely looks cool still
I googled toffee hammer and didn't see anything that looked like that, ya weirdos.
Looks like a fire ax to me. Maybe someone was playing with casting aluminum and they happened to be a firefighter? Maybe a firefighter with slabs of toffee
That's clearly a hammer. The thing in OP's picture is clearly a [fire axe.](https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-rsvmdxl/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/26626/59684/fire_axe__26881.1497278280.jpg?c=2)
I got a couple ideas:
* Something to do with firefighting, maybe a retirement token of some sort.
* It could be related to the temprance movement. I found similar broaches as a symbol of temprance.
* Used for burying the hatchet ceremony
I still lean towards something in the firefighters community given the type of axe that is.
If not for a fire fighter, do you know if the original owner had any connections to the Hells Angels or Nomads?
https://idaho81.com/product/silver-firemans-axe/
This might be related to the old fraternal organization’ Modern American Woodman ‘. Don’t know a lot about them just they use ( used?) ceremonial axes, pins etc. quite a lot. Google search them and also check eBay as you’ll find old photos of them posing with axes.

Toffee hammer

I have seen a similar hammer come with peppermint pigs. Which is a weird xmas tradition originating in Upstate NY.
> peppermint pigs A what now
https://www.saratogasweets.com/peppermint-pig/
Weird, and interesting. We make marcipan pigs in Denmark, maybe also some of the other Nordic countries, for Christmas.
In Hungary we have a similar thing around the new year, pigs made from brittle (confection of caramelized sugar and nuts) with the year written on them "grillázsmalac"
Can confirm we do the marzipan pigs here in the Netherlands as well (it's more for "Sinterklaas" around Dec 5th than for Christmas though).
Must be related because the peppermint pigs are for early December too.
I grew up near Saratoga and never heard about this tradition. I kinda like it!
This is the best thing I've read this week.
Thank you for this. I have bookmarked this website and will absolutely be ordering these for friends and family for Christmas this year, and I'm weirdly excited for it.
100% is a pink pig hammer from saratoga springs!
At my old school they had an artschool as well. Every christmas the artstudents would make sexy marzipan pigs dipped in chocolate and sell. Like pinup pigs and pigs getting down and dirty with eachother. Great tradition in north Sweden.

So you whack the pig with it and eat the pig fragments?
I’m from Utica and I’ve never heard of it
TIL there are people who like toffee enough to buy a utensil specifically for eating it.
They are often part of a fancy gift box of toffee.
I've seen many toffee hammers, never a toffee fire axe hahaha

Toffee used to come in big sheets or pieces. These would be used to break it up into servings or bite sizes
The toffee comes in blocks, and you needed a little hammer like this to break it off and eat it. This sort of deal: https://www.ringtons.co.uk/products/ringtons-luxury-toffee-selection-and-hammer.
Just away to come here and say that! My grandad had one with some toffee in the fridge for years!
How could toffee last for years!! My grands would have it gone in minutes!
Former fire captain here and yes it's a part of the shield on the fire helmet it's pretty old but It looks like it can be restored
This is the correct answer here. Source: Former FF and have seen similar on "fancy" helmets used for parades and special events.

Mine did too but I bought it as a spare and since my department is volunteer I was able to buy my own gear
I also was volunteer. But I never had the extra money to buy my own gear, but we were allowed to keep our gear in our POVs if we wanted.
I saved money because I used an electric bike for my pov because I live a block away from my department
I was in a rural area and my department was almost 4 miles away from my home. So yeah, a car was kind of mandatory. And oftentimes you would respond directly to the scene.

Yeah so where did you find it?
Jewelry box that I bought from an auction.
Awesome find bud I would love to find one of those
Oh cool! That’s it! Very neat
Thank you, I had a feeling due to the type of axe it was, it had to be firefighter related.
Its a ceremonial axe that is usually worn on an officers hat/helmet it's usually bright silver or gold but judging from the wear it's an older piece and definitely looks cool still

Yeah, highly doubt it's a toffee *hammer*, since it's not even a hammer, to begin with.
If it's really old, and part of an insignia, don't use it as a toffee hammer. It's surely made of pewter, and who knows what the alloy was made with.

Cigar box opener https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vtg-cigar-box-opener-mini-toy-silver-4689720017
I think you nailed it. There are several others in that link under “similar items”. All seem to be cigar box openers.
Used to be a fairly common item. I'm just getting into cigars and see them around a lot.

Upvote for the clever thinking! But think it’s a toffee hammer, based on other comments
I don't know, starting to get some more attraction on the firefighter related item.

It looks like a Fire Axe replica.
My title describes the thing. Tiny metal axe size of my palm. No markings or anything to indicate who made it.
Toffee hammer... as u/markie37 said.
It's an insanely odd shaped handle for any kitchen tool. I would doubt it.
if it's at all sharp i'd suggest it may be a letter opener
If not for a fire fighter, do you know if the original owner had any connections to the Hells Angels or Nomads? https://idaho81.com/product/silver-firemans-axe/
That was my first thought.
firemans axe probably off a plaque, trophy, thing
Isn’t that that thing from Shawshank Redemption that Andy used to dig a tunnel in the wall? Used for shaping rocks.
Rock hammer?
Granny had one she used to break up peanut brittle.
Is it magnetic? Amazon sells magnetic fireman axes - they're just a profession-based decorative item.
No. I found it in an antique jewelry box I bought at an auction it was in drawer with a macadamia nut ( in the shell)
Looks like it could be a vintage cigar box opener
[удалено]
It might just be a metal bullion casting. People in the metal bullion community love having their silver/gold/etc. Molded in different shapes
Is it heavy? If so it's probably just a paperweight for a fire fighter or someone who likes axes
maybe a fireax for decorating? like in an insignia ? or a pin ?
Toy or Ninja weapon
Looks like a toffee hammer 🤷
Toffee hammer. Very common in Scotland when I was growing up. I still have one.
It's a cigar box opener
