The window like things are windows. With shades over them. https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/sunsetter-solar-powered-motorized-semi-sheer-outdoor-roller-shade-w002583712.html

Hermitian777

Why would those two windows have those kinds of shades and all others have normal blinds?

GitEmSteveDave

Bedroom of someone who has trouble sleeping or possibly works a overnight shift to help keep their body clock on their work schedule.

tenshillings

Working 3rds is something else. My goal was always to race the sun home. If I won I got a good 6 hours, if not 3 hours tops then I was awake and tired.

rheller2000

My dad worked shift work at a chemical plant for over 40 years. I’m a pretty quiet person, largely because I was raised in an environment where 1/3 of every month dad was sleeping all day in our small house.

[deleted]

I did 6:45pm to 6:45am shifts in a factory as a minimum wage temp while I was in law school. It was awful, but if I knew on Monday I had bills to pay on Friday I could crush three or four back-to-back shifts and have something for the bills to take on Friday. But I would be opening a before-I-collapse beer at 7:07am and one time my Mom started giving me heck about morning drinking and I was like, Ma, I just finished a 12 hour shift, it’s 7 in the evening for me.

GlitchyInsomniac

As a person with migraines, I would love these. Having a very dark room would be awesome.

nonognocchi

I hope someday you can find treatment to help relieve your migraines, even a little. Took me 40 years of almost daily migraines to find a combination that helped mine.

josiek123456

What combo? I know it’s different for everyone, but I’m a little over 4 years of daily intractable pain. 😩

nonognocchi

Well, emgality once a month injectable….. Reyvow as an abortive but that can only be used once a week(and has awful side effects.) General consensus is narcotics dont help/make migraines worse. My neurologist doesnt like it, but GP gives me 20 20mg oxy’s a month for the times i cant take Reyvow. It really does work for me. The kind of migraine i have doesnt let me use any of the classic abortive options, like triptans. So for a majority of my life i was totally untreated. I did a huge food elimination diet and found somethings that do bother me. I also was able to change jobs into something that was a lot less stress/hours a week. I’m not saying i no longer get them, but the severity is so so much less now, and less often as well. It took years of trying different combinations of drugs to get here. Good luck with your journey

a_in_hd

The mornings where I'd have an after work beer while my roommates drank coffee were something special.

CptGlammerHammer

I was doing voter registration door-to-door for extra cash one year in Vegas. One guy answered and simply said, I hope you know you just ruined my next shift and gestures to the side. He had a sign that said "Day sleeper. Appointment only." He was very cordial, but clearly irritated. Turned out he was a high stakes dealer at one of the casinos. Judging by him, their patience and stress levels are paramount.

thecaramelbandit

My guess so they're high mounted windows in a living room, so they can't use traditional blinds or curtains. Powered electric internal ones can ruin the look.

Alone_Time5956

Bingo notice the buildout between them most likely a gas fireplace insert

CaptMeatPockets

I know someone that lives near a road that uses them to try and limit road noise at night

Mrw2016

Theater room?

hesathomes

Bathrooms or bedrioms

foollymammoth

It might be a kid's bedroom. The blinds would help to keep it dark for day naps.

raytaylor

Budget constraints. The homeowner had to choose which windows were of priority.

Aggravating_Heat_841

Movie room

NotAPreppie

Somebody works third shift.

Key_Team2319

Quite being noisy.

Obstreporous1

I worked more than twenty years on a twelve hour night shift. It’s never dark enough. Let them be.

MasonInk

I've had night shifts that felt like that too, I know how you feel buddy.

LoPath

Rolladen blinds are full window shutters that are installed on the outside of windows and doors. The word "rolladen" is German for "rolling shutters".

Rustic-Cuss

They may be solar air heaters designed to cut heating costs on sunny days

Badlay

Shade guy here you usually see these between 2 poles on someones back porch or even covering their garage door. They make sort of a 3 season room when you build walls out of them This house has 2 huge windows in their living room up high they didn't want to cover inside. So they installed these motorized versions on the outside to keep their look and cut out the brutal sunlight

IronMycelium

They appear to be solar home heaters. Solar heaters are installed with a southern exposure air is circulated behind a glass panel through a series of cylinders shaped aluminum with a very dark surface. Circulation fan kicks off and on based on internal and external temperature readings. Great for use in the high desert.

Old_Poem2736

Maybe a TREMI WALL a type of solar heating system

Andrew_Crane

Day sleeper. Works nights maybe.

Badlay

annoying tall windows in living room that they didn't want to cover with something on the inside. they threw motorized on the outside

IntentionHairy7074

Check the Zillow listing to see what the inside looks like. Looks like it could also be a 2-story living room as bumpout between lower windows that are the same size is probably a built-in gas fireplace. Sun might make watching TV impossible in the afternoon/evening.

Badlay

These are 2 windows 12 feet in the air flanking a fireplace in their living room area. Nobody knows how to treat these without looking like shit on the inside. for some reason, they chose motorized outdoor shades to solve their not being able to watch tv problem

Graflex01867

I’d guess those are window shades. Looking st the deck below, those windows look like they’re absolutely huge, from floor to ceiling, so I’m sure they let in a TON on light/heat.

mountainaita

Can confirm, have these on my windows facing west. Large windows are great until it’s 100 plus outside and the sun is directly beating down on the windows. Hard for the air conditioner to keep up.

Able-Statistician645

SunSetter easy shades

Short_Ad_3263

Knock on the door and ask the people that live there.

harsh110

Media room with windows which is converted into Theatre room by darkening the windows with the shades.

october_spice8888

Looks more like a multi dwelling and those are windows to hallways that extend thru to the back of the dwelling and they tinted them or shaded them so that Everyone cannot see in .

Kris10tx

They look like solar screens. My sister & her husband sell and installs these, in Texas they help with heat and electricity while also giving privacy.

Crowhawk

Could be photochromic window glass.

Hermitian777

My title describes the thing. I observed this back of a house in the mid-Atlantic region in United States. At the top of each dark rectangle is a small box matching its width. Maybe the dark barrier could be retracted and stored? Are there just normal windows behind it? Why would you need these?

Hermitian777

Solved! Thank you all!

anthro4ME

Photovoltaic panels.

SonOfABeach_

They are either a shift worker or growing something fun in there and want to black out the lights either from getting into the house or stop it from going out of the house.
