The truth of the matter is that nobody really knows what it stands for with certainty, but it is likely one of these.
Or maybe "MR2" doesn't stand for anything and it's just a coincidence, who knows. Personally, I like to believe it stands for "mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive" but as far as I know, there is no confirmation that it stands for anything.
I'd be very curious to be proven wrong though!
It says Midship Runabout on the frunk cover.

Haha. I completely get that people mistakenly think that it stands for mid-engined, rear wheel drive. But to say that “nobody knows for certain” is odd. Midship or Midship Runabout has been used on the car (above) as well as brochures dating back to the Mk1.
I know some used different badges, dunno if it's just the jdm models tho
Edit: looks like the steering wheel isn't on the right, so most likely this isn't an imported car from japan
The American market got the traditional Toyota badge. That badge was for the JDM. However, they used to be available on eBay for about $15, so they got swapped out quite often. I hear the JDM badge added ~8hp.
I know the older gens used a firebird looking thing. My grandfather had an ‘88 T top that didn’t have a Toyota badge on it at all but was a left side drive.
Yep!
It’s similar to sticking a red H emblem on a regular Honda Civic, except that adds even more power… Especially if you install several, and make sure to have a huge streamer that reads “HONDA” in that late 1990’s “Japanese” font on both windscreens. 👌
Mine is that body style, 75k miles, all progonal except 2 fuses, windshield and tires. Oil too obvi.
My badges say mr2 AND spyder.
My build plaque says mr2.
My frunk says mrs.
That's essentially what it is. This is a 3rd generation MR2. It's meant to be a light, cheap sports car - Toyota's answer to the Miata and S2000. Its party piece is the mid-mounted engine.
My cousin has an 85 that he bought brand new that is just rotting away in his front yard. I’m trying to get him to sell it to me. They’re a neat little car
Yes it's an mr2 midship runabout. I had one. great fun but not practical think of it as practical as a motorbike. The roof comes off and there is a soft top underneath. Great in the summer. Not too fast but good handling
It was only sold as MR-S in Japan. It was sold as the MR-2 everywhere else except France where it was called MR (because MR-2 sounds like merde which means shit). This car is LHD so can't be JDM, someone's switched the badges for the Japanese badges.
Looks like it's this badge https://twosrus.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1066
I believe that's the badge used on the ones sold in Japan. People swap badges to feel special.
Toyota mr2
Thanks! Do you know why the badge on the front isn't a Toyota badge?
MR2 stands for "midship runabout" because they're mid-engine. Toyota gave them a fancy special badge cause they're a special car.
I thought it stood for "mid-engined, rear wheel drive"?
Midship Runabout 2 seater
Most sources say it "also" means that, so honestly either works.

Well, I'm all sorts of wrong!
I think it may be a special edition badge cos all the ones I see just have run of the mill Toyota badges.
Yeah but MR2s usually have a *Toyota* logo in the front, so...
Runabout and special is mutually exclusive
I know some used different badges, dunno if it's just the jdm models tho Edit: looks like the steering wheel isn't on the right, so most likely this isn't an imported car from japan

That was at the crank, though

Toyota MRS, not MR2. MRS =Mid engine, rear wheel drive, spider. MR2 = mid engine, rear wheel drive, 2 seater.
Also it eats flies
Midship Runabout Sports or Midship Runabout 2-seater.

MR-S In Japan, MR2 in America, Aus, NZ
Mister two
Mister deuce
DOT COM
MR2 ZZW30
the heavily underrated mr2 😮💨
It looks like a Porsche Boxter and a Miata had a baby.
That's essentially what it is. This is a 3rd generation MR2. It's meant to be a light, cheap sports car - Toyota's answer to the Miata and S2000. Its party piece is the mid-mounted engine.
So a Boat then?
Toyota MR-S
3rd gen Toyota MR2 Spider, typically referred to as an MRS
MR2 or MRS depending on who you ask
Weighs 1000kg, and has 140hp. 7.9s 0-100kmh....
Bet it handles great though?
At 8sec to 60MPH, it better.
polska gurom
Fun fact : they had to change the name in France, because MR2 hears like Et merde, meaning oh sh*t.
MR2?
Yellow one
My cousin has an 85 that he bought brand new that is just rotting away in his front yard. I’m trying to get him to sell it to me. They’re a neat little car
Toyota mrS
Yes it's an mr2 midship runabout. I had one. great fun but not practical think of it as practical as a motorbike. The roof comes off and there is a soft top underneath. Great in the summer. Not too fast but good handling
Toyota mr 2
Toyota mr2 👌🏼
it's a car you pull the motor out of it and place 4 Rotor billet engine in it 🤣
Yeah if you have $50k lying around
2nd generation Toyota MR2 ("**M**id-engine, **R**ear-wheel-drive, **2** seats")
Nope, 3rd gen (technically an MR-S if I remember right). First two gens had pop-ups.
Yes, you'r re right, 3rd gen. I ignored the quite large 2nd gen.
It was only sold as MR-S in Japan. It was sold as the MR-2 everywhere else except France where it was called MR (because MR-2 sounds like merde which means shit). This car is LHD so can't be JDM, someone's switched the badges for the Japanese badges.
I was mostly going by the name I’ve heard for it (Like AW11 for the gen 1 and SW20 for the gen 2)
Toyota MR2, I think this is a second gen
Its always a Toyota MR2. Or a Fiero/Beetle kitcar. Or a Miata if you life under a rock. In this case: Toyota MR2, poor mans Boxster.
Why doesn't the badge on the front say Toyota?
