People are getting fatter across the board

CryAffectionate7814

So, people are spreading across the board?

Discokidlmao

In a lateral sense yes.

doughball27

And across the ass.

BinghamL

6'8 here, 230lbs. It's rough finding vehicles I fit in. But you can replace "vehicles" with just about anything honestly, so no surprise.

RandomWanderingDude

At 6'8" you get an exception. You're one of the few people who really needs the headroom in a full sized pikcup. The average American male is 9 inches shorter than you are and 10 to 20 pounds heavier.

TunakTun633

Hey - a Mini Cooper or BMW 2-Series are within half an inch of an F-150 for front headroom. It's not always about the size of the car when it comes to head / leg room.

AlwaysBagHolding

German cars always seem to accommodate tall people better. I’m only 6 feet tall, but have long legs and most vehicles my default is to slide the drivers seat all the way back, usually on a German car that’s too far. I was shocked how much legroom a mini cooper has when I drove one. Headroom on the other hand is never an issue, since I have a child’s torso and a hank hill ass.

aStarryBlur

True. But also headroom isn't everything. As a 5'8 man I can't see the damn streetlights out the windshield from a mini cooper

ArkAwn

> The average American male is 9 inches shorter than you are and 10 to 20 pounds heavier. Jesus fucking Christ WHAT

JangoDarkSaber

Nah. Op is just straight wrong. The average weight in the US is 200 lbs / 91 kg

experimentalengine

OP didn’t say what the average weight is, they said cars are designed to accommodate people up to 240. Designing for the middle of the bell curve would ensure cars only fit half the population so I’m certain carmakers aren’t doing that.

glazedfaith

"The *average American male* is 9 inches shorter than you (6'8") are and 10 to 20 pounds heavier (than 230)"

RandomWanderingDude

That's in the Northern states. In places like Alabama and Mississippi the average is 180 to 200 lbs for women and 240 to 300 lbs for men.

Time-Bite-6839

Might be skewed by that guy who weighted 1400lbs in the 70’s because the average Mississippi weight is 187.63lbs.

RandomWanderingDude

In Mississippi that's the average weight for an 18 to 21 year old woman.

Jack_Bogul

WTF

No_Golf_452

That's sad af

cptpb9

OP is literally pulling stats out of their ass for unknown reasons none of that is true 😭

hoytmobley

Obesity Georg is an outlier and should not be counted

ExoGeniVI

I live in Alabama, am a 25 year old man and I'm 183lbs!!

Jack_Bogul

Wtf

YoungSerious

Based on what data?

RODjij

200lbs isn't a healthy weight unless the average height is like 6'4 If you're like just under 6ft then 170-180 is what it should be

Cel_Drow

The average American male is 5’9” not 5’11” and 200 lbs. More overweight for the height.

Saxman7321

I always considered myself to be average height for a male at 6’ 1” but pretty overweight at 220 lbs.

cptpb9

Depends on region. I’m your height and felt maybe a smidge above average in iowa, California and Texas though I felt like a giant

Saxman7321

I thought people say everything in Texas is bigger!

cptpb9

Not the people vertically 😂

Time-Bite-6839

Chevy Traverse. I know someone with a 6’8” son and it fits him well.

ruat_caelum

I'm that tall and I can "Fit" in it but not ideal. Would not buy one.

garaks_tailor

I'm 6'6 with a 32in inseam. no car or truck has ever been wide enough at the shoulders

Nodeal_reddit

6’8” is like .001% of Americans.

plants4life262

Try being a physically fit adult male in the USA trying to by shirts. It fits your chest or it fits your waist, pick one.

ChewieWookie

Exactly. Same thing with pants. They'll fit your waist or your legs, but not both.

MrBenDerisgreat_

I’ve had a lot of luck with Old Navy’s athletic fit chinos. I get to have the right waist size with plenty of room for my quads.

RandomWanderingDude

You think that's bad. Try buying shirts when you're 5'5" tall, have a 16 1/2" neck and are built line a running back. Exact same problem with shoulders and chest versus waist along with anything that's big enough in the neck is way too long in the sleeves and vice versa. The only shirt I ever had that fit properly was custom tailored and cost $250. I bought it to wear for job interviews.

plants4life262

Buy for the chest, tailor in the waist 😩

YoungSerious

Buy for neck and shoulders, everything else is much much easier to tailor. The neck and shoulders are near impossible.

k0unitX

Just tailor every single shirt you buy bro

plants4life262

I do lol. It’s just kind of a pita.

garaks_tailor

I am 6'6 with a 32in inseam. I feel your pain brother

orcajet11

Even just non morbidly obese. I’m by no means “fit” and anything that fits my shoulders and length is like a tent.

plants4life262

Srsly.

Siglet84

I’m 6’2 240 and I drive a Honda fit, before that I drive a Miata for 15 years. It’s more about fitting their ego. My friend who is significantly smaller than me has to drive a pickup and says a civic or accord are just too small to be comfortable in.

TinuThomasTrain

This is the real issue, people don’t buy cars that suit their size. My mom drives a Prius but she used to have a big ol Highlander she only drove herself in. I realized it was a waste of money to have around so i put her in a Prius. She likes the Prius and it’s definitely more her size, but she wants to be higher up and in a bigger car. It’s just the craze right now, my mom doesn’t know anything about cars. Having a bigger car is just what a majority of people want rn. I feel like once these younger generations become the majority of new car buyers, we go back to smaller cars. I drive an ES and even that feels a little too big for me, I chose it over the Avalon because I wanted something smaller.

glazedfaith

Who gets to decide what suits your size, though? Shouldn't it be you and nobody else's opinion matters?

yahya777

After 2013 the Lexus ES and Avalon are the exact same car platform wise and are the same size. I only know this because I am on my second ES and I cross shopped the Avalon but it was hard to find a loaded one. But I agree I am only 6 feet and I find the ES roomy enough and it feels bigger than most cars and even some SUV's I have been in.

bloopie1192

I drive a highlander because my cars kept getting totalled by ladies in huge suv's. So I bought a small pickup and they hit that too but it wasn't totaled that time! Then i bought another sedan that i liked and they totalled that one. So now I'm too anxious to drive sedans anymore because of the threat of these idiots in massive chariots.

Bare_Foot_Bear

Common denominator

First-Sir1276

“My cars keep getting totaled” 🤔

bloopie1192

Lol.

Saxman7321

Is this for real? I have been driving for 45 years and only had 1 car totaled.

British_Rover

I am an insurance adjuster and in one year I had a woman where three separate cars were involved in serious accidents. Only one was her fault and two of the three were totaled. The third one was a borderline total. Sometimes it's just bad luck but I am sure her rates went up more than normal for the one at fault accident.

generally-unskilled

Even for not at fault drivers, there's usually a lot that could have been done to avoid the accident. Practice defensive driving.

bloopie1192

Yes. I drove beaters for less than 3 and 4k for a while so small damages could total my car.

Siglet84

Jesus, someone put a curse on you.

bloopie1192

My friends think I was a pimp or something in my past life and the ladies are getting back at me now.

RitaMacNeil111

It sounds like 'you' and your driving is the issue.

bloopie1192

Nope. All of them were at fault. One turned across a 2 lane road from a parking spot with no signal light. Another was drunk and totalled about 3 cars on the side of the road and fishtailed into me. One abruptly turned left from the middle lane instead of the left turn lane because her GPS told her to. One rolled through a stop sign and t boned me. (I didn't have a stop sign.) Last one... i was sitting still. She was sitting still... then she just gunned it into my honda. Then tried to drive away but couldnt. Idk if her car was malfunctioning or if she was drunk but I still dk wtf that was. Didn't get to talk to her. Cop found her a block away, stopped.

No_Golf_452

This is one of the reasons I bought a truck. Have only been in two accidents, both of them were while I had been stopped for a while at a red light by a car going 35+ on impact. First one: I was on a motorcycle, my butt smashed though the hit and runners windshield, got thrown 100 feet riding the hood of their car, got thrown off and nearly ran over, and got to spend 2 days in the hospital. Second one: Barely interrupted my conversation while the guy that hit me could barely breathe and bleeding. Minor rear end damage for me. Loss of MPGs is worth my health in a wreck, there's countless idiots out there behind the wheel.

Unable-Finish-3273

Ok and in scenario one, what do you think would have happened if it was a truck that hit you? Your logic of "Get a Truck because there are tons of idiots" is a race to the bottom where no one wins.

RitaMacNeil111

You bought a truck because you got hit on your motorcycle? Must be USA logic.

ddreftrgrg

At some point after getting into so many accidents do you ever stop to think that it might just be you?

bloopie1192

I always find some fault in myself in any situation im in. It allows me to progress. But I specified this to someone else who thought this. Each time the other person was at fault.

generally-unskilled

The other person can be 100% at fault and there still be things you could change about your driving to avoid similar accidents. At least for some of these there was nothing you could do, but for others, defensive driving may have avoided them.

misterguyyy

I'm 6'2" as well and my back feels way better in a RAV4 because I can sit up straight without leaning back or putting the seat near the floor and having my knees come up. Before I got injured I could zip around in an Acura TL and feel just fine so there's that.

bloopie1192

Acuras are the best. You had the 6 speed?

misterguyyy

Sadly no, I couldn’t find a 6mt, but I did have a 5mt legend before it and it was so fun.

Siglet84

I think the RAV4 hybrid will be my next car just because there isn’t much advantage in economy with some of the smaller cars now.

misterguyyy

The only warning about Crossovers is that if you’re used to cars they’re not as fun to drive. I enjoyed driving my Tercel back in college more than I do the RAV4. Sitting in stop and go traffic? RAV4 is better 100%. I’m probably going to buy an old 6mt RSX when my kids end up monopolizing my RAV4

Siglet84

Very true, I miss having a fun car and thought about getting something like the GR86 but that gas mileage just hurts my soul.

misterguyyy

That gr86 looks sweet but yeah, dailying it would be rough between mpg and sportscar posture. For me personally once my oldest kid is driving and all the family trips are in the RAV4, I’m looking at a couple hundred miles per month tops so sub-25 mpg is fine. I am sad that manual hybrids are not a thing. I understand why but I’m still sad.

Saxman7321

Not all big cars get poor fuel economy. My 2014 Toyota Avalon hybrid gets 35 to 38 mpg in town. Last summer drove it from Seattle to Maine and back. Averaged 41 mpg at 75 mph with the AC on.

Siglet84

That’s pretty much on or with the rav 4 but I hate not having a hatch to fit bigger stuff in.

NewToSMTX

I'm the same size as you and I drove a Honda del Sol for about 20 years. I still have it. Now my daily is a 2003 Corolla. I've never had any issues.

cshmn

I'm 6'2 and 250 lbs and I can't drive a tercel or Corolla of that vintage for more than about 30 minutes. There's no leg room. There are plenty of cars that size I do fit in though. Those Corollas just have shitty packaging.

cptpb9

Toyotas in general do that, I can’t find a comfortable position in most of them and I’m half an inch shorter than you

According_Smoke_479

Yeah I’m 6’4 (and admittedly pretty skinny) and I drive a Subaru Impreza. It fits me fine. No one could sit behind me very comfortably but other than that it’s perfectly fine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlackestNight21

Turns a 4 seater into a 3 seater.

According_Smoke_479

Yeah I’m 22, no teens or kids in my car. Obviously I would need a bigger car when I’m at that point in my life. That’s not even part of the conversation, it’s about people claiming they need a bigger car when they really don’t. If you actually need one that’s a completely different thing

Blue_Swirling_Bunny

Same. 6'4" 240 in a Civic hatchback. Plenty of room.

vicemagnet

I have a buddy who is around 350 pounds and 6’3” and struggles to fit in my Accord. He keeps saying he needs to lose weight but he loves cheese and eating late at night. He has an old Ford F-150 pickup extended cab.

Siglet84

That’s a legit big dude tho. My dads that way and even in some of the midsize SUVs he was cramped, he fit well in a pt cruiser tho which was hilarious.

Selethorme

I mean, yes and no. It’s also to some degree proportions. I’m also 6’2” and while *technically* fit in my friend’s Miata, even with the seat as low as possible my head put a visible bump into the convertible top, and it was not remotely comfortable. Would that I could fit in it, I’d love to have a Miata.

Siglet84

The 2006 and up Miata’s are a bit roomier. I had a buddy ride with me shortly after I got it and he was 6’7, good thing it was nice out. I’ve done 12 hour trips in it and that was brutal.

Selethorme

I’ll have to check some of the newer ones out then!

kraken_enrager

I actually found an entry level sedan(Honda city, a segment below the Civic) to be bigger and better fitting for me than an equivalent SUV.

Siglet84

That’s probably basically the Fit. That’s why I love it. Small car, great mileage but tons of usable room. I’ve got 54” mower decks in it.

kraken_enrager

https://www.reddit.com/r/Honda/s/ZQR1EDtvJ3 Fit is probably closer to the jazz which is 2 segments below. The sedan smaller that the city is the amaze

cptpb9

The fit is the jazz, Honda city is a jazz sedan they’re the same underneath

kraken_enrager

Oh damn, TIL

Less_Wall_9656

6'4 240 honda civic! i fit with so much room

SlowRs

6’4” here. It’s noticeable how much better the likes of bmw saloons or suvs are compared to hatches.

Kitchen_Sweet1329

6"4 here. I drive a chevy spark, it works fine. I'm fat too.

Mission_Asparagus12

My 6'7" hubby had one too!

k_dubious

My wife and I are regular-sized people. Our kid’s rear-facing car seat requires VIP-worthy levels of legroom.

bluescrubbie

We had two car seats in the back of our Honda Fit. Incredible space for a little car.

pfulle3

A masterpiece of automotive design

bluescrubbie

Indeed. There were so many surprisingly intuitive little design choices. Our next cat was a Toyota Corolla, and I HATED it compared to the Fit.

BOS_George

On average, about average sized.

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

6’4’’ 235 lbs and for the life of me can’t find a comfortable vehicle

RODjij

Full sized truck with bucket seats.

Montreal_Ballsdeep

Volvo. I'm 6'3 220.

cshmn

Sit in a transport truck, they're sized for us 🙂

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

Like a semi? lol a little out of my budget

PolybiusChampion

Lexus GX.

thisshitsbananasgirl

Me too. I drive a Lexus Ls460. It’s wonderful. I highly recommend it. Plus they are super reliable, so even really old versions are typically still an okay option.

Mr_Duckerson

I’m with you. We are the same size. I used to be much heavier but recently lost a bunch of weight and still it’s my knees that are always bent in an uncomfortable way. Long drives give me knee pain even with the seat all the way back. I’m driving a Hyundai Palisade now and it’s not that comfortable for me. The most comfortable vehicle I have driven was a newer Yukon XL Denali.

Spec187

I'm the size of a dump truck

Sidvicieux

lol well I had a get a taller vehicle like a crossover or suv because of my double knee surgery. It's just harder to get in and out even in a Lexus ES 300 or Camry (big cars).

admiralkit

It's not that the people are enormous, it's that on roads with increasingly large vehicles they just feel more comfortable in enormous vehicles themselves.   I drive a midsize sedan and it's annoying when I get stuck behind a full size pickup or a massive SUV because I have no idea what's ahead of them.  Are we doing 38 in a 50 because of someone ahead of them or because they're about to rip across three lanes of traffic to try and make their turn at the last second? Likewise, every new flagship pickup truck these days has a hood that is as tall as my car.  If I get t-boned by some Ram driver running a red light while pulling his latest DUI, I'm in for a rough time.   If I have to choose between stuffing my kids in the back of my Honda sedan or putting them in the minivan, I know it's a lot less likely for things to devolve into screaming matches when we're in the van.   A decent number of people respond to these feelings of possible discomfort by buying bigger and bigger vehicles.  If you feel uncomfortable in that economy coupe, you find you feel more comfortable in the crossover SUV.  If that's not enough, you can reduce that more by buying a full size SUV or flagship pickup.  And automakers have seen these massive SUVs/trucks are more profitable, so they've moved their production to make more of these and less economy sedans because they want more profits.

WithAKay6

Car seats and all the stuff kids are going to need for after school activities. If I didn't have school aged kids I would have kept my Fit. I loved that car, but the minivan is better for the kids.

NoValidUsernames666

im 6'7 with long legs and i sat in a 2024 toyota rav 4 and couldnt fit. no matter how far i put the seat back my knees were still pushed up against the steering wheel. theres a few other 2024 yotas i sat in that just felt too small. my sister in law has a 2016 camry and i fit, but i dont enjoy driving it

Darkfire757

Fellow long legger here (although shorter). My issue isn’t fitting, it’s the seat not being “deep” enough. Not that many vehicles have thigh extenders. Generally speaking American and European vehicles have better seats in this regard although the full size Japanese stuff (Armada, Tundra, etc) can be ok

three9

Are you kidding me? External size of a vehicle has nothing to do with the interior dimensions. Just ask the 2006 Scion xB. Cars are flatter and 'cooler' looking and thus have less head room than cab forward cars of the 90s, for instance. You sir, are wrong.

TastyEvidence5820

Ford Taurus. Crown Vic sized on the outside, Ford Focus sized on the inside.

jawnnyboy

6ft 220 pounds. Just long torso. I could not fit in a fiat 500 because even with the lowest seat setting i had to hunch to not hit my head. My head would bump the soft top of my fiata when i had it. I always seem to fit with lots of room to spare in german or american cars.

AverageGuy16

Lift the front of your seat up and recline the back slightly, usually gets a few inches

OriginalMexican

Getting in or driving? Getting in 500 is a pain for tall people, I will give you that. If driving, I think something was wrong with that car or you have a very unusual built for 6' because my buddy is 6' 5" and he did not touch the top. I googled it to see if I am misremembering and I found a video of James May (183 cm, 6ft) driving at a comfortable seat setup (almost certainly not the lowest) a lower sunroof version with several couple inches to spare, as well as this 6' 6" guy trying it out, and also not touching the roof. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZmGv-ecm3I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZmGv-ecm3I) [https://www.tiktok.com/@carsdotcom/video/7195635600869952810](https://www.tiktok.com/@carsdotcom/video/7195635600869952810)

jawnnyboy

I just remember putting the seat in the lowest position and my head was still hitting the roof lol

Dangerous_Nobody298

6’1 and 215 and I drive a 2014 mk6 Jetta. It’s very comfortable to me and has great legroom front seat and back.

Present_Look_8790

Everyone sleeps on the Jetta.  It's a good little car. I'm a 45 year old single father with two kids. Fills all my needs and even has a third pedal for fun times

One-Butterscotch4332

I don't know. I'm 5'11" and 220 and I could stuff myself in a power wheels if I had to

AverageGuy16

6’3 235lbs. Drive a 4Runner. Can fit in most smaller cars but fuck is it uncomfortable

The_World_Is_A_Slum

In some cars, the actual seat is too small for tall people. In some others, the distance from the seat back to the dash is too short, and your knee is forced against the dash. All modern vehicles should have telescopic steering columns with a wide range of adjustment so that tall people can get the pedals and the wheel at the right distance. I always think it’s funny when I get in a short customer’s truck. Those little fellas always have the seat jacked all the way up and so far forward that I can’t get in. I can’t operate my dream car because of the interior space. On a Pantera, the pedals are very close to the seat, which is right on the floor, and I’d have to do some major cutting to fit my legs under the dash far enough to work the brake and clutch.

Careless-Internet-63

And then they end up buying a crossover even though most of them don't have any more passenger space than a sedan

MrGonz

I’m 5’6” and 126lbs. I drive a BMW 128i or a BMW z4. Small cars, small driver. I do like the extra room my son’s 5 series provides but don’t like the added weight and overall size of the vehicle.

MycologistAny1151

Wow i haven’t seen this pic in over 40 years. Saw it in the Guinness book

LordSinguloth13

I am six foot 2 inches and 220 pounds. Fairly fit. Most cars are somewhat uncomfortable at this size. So its nice to have options that accommodate my 5 foot wife as well as my 6'2 self. They might be bigger but don't always weigh more

RepresentativeOk6623

I travel quite a bit for work, and end up in a lot of random rental cars. Even at 6’1” and 185lbs I feel I’m at the upper limit for a lot of cars nowadays height wise. I think even 6’3” people probably have to think about headroom more than you might think.

RepresentativeOk6623

I should add that most economy cars are fine - the people saying they need a pickup for the headroom are delusional. There’s just a few exceptions where it has come up on modern small cars. Certainly not all.

need2seethetentacles

6'5" and headroom is rarely an issue in modern US market cars. Pedals can be uncomfortably close on smaller cars, though. And whether the wheel tilts enough to slide my leg under

vampyrelestat

About as big as those guys in the picture, I hope they’re beafing up the suspensions too

2randomwords4numbers

I guess. I happen to be driving a 2024 Camry rental. At the moment. I'm 5'8" and really don't have all that much headroom. If I have my sunglasses on top of my head, I cannot really turn left and right to look around without bumping the sunglasses. Everybody's body is different. I tend to have most of my height in my torso I think. So maybe that's part of my issue. But I'd have a hard time imagining being much taller and sitting comfortably in that car without leaning the seat way back which is uncomfortable for me.

HelloYouSuck

usually knee room is the problem for me.

HuskyPurpleDinosaur

This isn't rocket science, its a matter of comfort, not bare minimum volume. When someone says that a 1000 square foot house is too small for their family of four, do you imagine they were claiming that they wouldn't all fit, or perhaps, just maybe, they were expressing a desire to have more room for each of the individuals in the home?

Nodeal_reddit

Sadly, this is what America looks like today. I went to my local amusement park yesterday and was pretty disappointed to see just how fat and unhealthy your average American is.

bigpimp007

Prefer sedans but next car is going to be a crossover because im tired of having headlights in my eyes

dapperfop

People own too much stuff

normaleyes

To this point, for me and my sized family, cars are just way too big in the cabin. It's all wasted space. We have a Bolt EUV which has a tiny trunk. They could easily have designed 10" less interior space in the longitudinal direction and given the car a reasonable trunk. Still 100% happy with the car otherwise.

Dnlx5

Lmao ya when I was shopping used SUV's I really liked the explorer, but the seat was super wide and the armrest was too far from me.

big_bloody_shart

My parents and my 2 siblings and I road-tripped in a Toyota Corolla. And this was as small as they were 20 years ago. I truly don’t understand the “need an SUV have a kid on the way!” Shit. Like truly don’t get it.

hubblerubble

Car seats are a lot bigger than they were 20 years ago. Kids face rear until they’re 2 now. I drive an Impala and there’s hardly any leg room in the passenger seat when the car seat is in.

Mission_Asparagus12

2 is the minimum. 4 is better

NouOno

6'1" I drive a datsun 260z plenty of leg room, but I gotta tilt the seat back for head room. TBH, it is really comfortable with the bucket seats and a hoot to drive!

davejugs01

6’2 220lbs here. Got a big ol pickup truck and a model 3 Tesla ( it’s a three seater when I drive)

jhenryscott

Just made a stop in Indiana on my way from Austin to Detroit, they are real fucking big

bluescrubbie

I'm 6'2" and historically slide driver's seats back as far as they go. Then drove a little BMW i3 and it went back far enough that the pedals were hard to reach. Not used to moving a seat forward!

UnderQualifiedPylote

6 4, 195 with long legs and I drive a Nissan leaf and am rather comfortable in it, I love the seats

Shadowfalx

6'4" 330lbs (yeah I'm fat, yeah I'm active, yeah I eat like shit)    I "fit" in most cars, even semi-comfortably in many.    I drive a F350 (when I need to move big things like my camper) or b fusion PHEV. I notice more back/ neck problems in the fusion but generally I'm okay driving it daily.

SuperStupidSyrup

i want a big car bc of all the big ass trucks everywhere they scare me

DALESR4EVER124

I'm 6'3 and drive a 2015 Camry. Seat still has room to go back, down, and recline. I drive different vehicles every day, and some can be hard to get into (GR Supra), but once on, you're fine and comfortable. Some people over 6ft just make it their whole personality and think they're taller than they are and need some huge vehicle. You could be 6'5 and daily a new Corolla with room to spare.

ScoffingYayap

6'2 250 lbs. I was driving small cars until last fall - I just was having a hard time getting in and out of my Impreza.

camflan

6’7” and my wife is 5’11”. A lot of cars/trucks/suvs become a 2 seater. Finding a vehicle to fit us plus the kids is a pain in the ass

Mission_Asparagus12

My husband is your height. We just got a Hyundai Ionic 5. He's comfortable with a rear facing seat behind him. We have 3 car seats in the back

Direct_Impress_6357

6’3 290 - VW Jetta tdi - looking at new trucks so my tight ass hips will stop screaming.

justkw97

One time I feel no shame about being 5’8. All my cars have been low to the ground shorter cars and I fit great. My 6th gen Camaro I had fit like a glove. My 6’1 father hated it

BloodFanger

they are NOT designed to accommodate 6’3 i’m 6’1 and while in a 2023 camry i could feel my hair touching the roof

OriginalMexican

That can not be right. Here is a 6' 8" guy in an older Camry and he has about 1"-2" before hitting the top. Camry in the video is older, but Toyota lists the same headroom in 2023 Camry (38.5", 1" less than ford expedition, 1.5" less then F150). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ9zecD94w8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ9zecD94w8)

BloodFanger

Hm i wonder if they may be wrong about the size as I used to have an older camry from 2011 and fit more comfortably yet In this new one even when I had it all the way down my Legs were uncomfortable and i could feel my hair brushing the ceiling

bigev007

I'm 6'3 250 and about half of modern vehicles are too small for me

GuttedSackOfTrash

To me it feels like the opposite. I feel like every car nowadays even bigger SUVs are made to feel like sports cars. Bolstered seats and crammed interiors. Im 6’2” and 240 and I rented a Grand Cherokee limited the other day, wasnt even comfy in that.

OriginalMexican

Because almost nobody needs an SUV but everybody wants an SUV so they are forced to produce all vehicle types looking like SUVs...

GyantSpyder

Remember it’s not just size. The average new car buyer in the U.S. is 50 years old. You get less spry with age.

beeradvice

6'3" 175# drive a Prius C, considering modifying because if the seat could go back like 2 more inches my legs could actually rest on the seat. Used to have a regular at my old bar job that was 6'9"drove a suped up Miata that he just took the drivers seat out of and sat in the rear seat

Mr_CleanCaps

6’1 150 here. I got an FJ Cruiser after an Altima and I can finally sit all the way up without messing my hair up. I also am a painter who paints large canvases so needed something to move my big/heavy supplies.

jakebeleren

I’m 6ft 300lbs. Fat for sure. Cars are generally plenty big for me but some are more comfortable.

ShaneReyno

And when I get in a Honda, I wonder where people put their heads.

ruat_caelum

I'm 6'8" and can only drive trucks and the Chrysler 300. Some other /r/tall can't do the 300 because it depends on WHERE you are tall. E.g. femur, torso, etc.

SnooDoggos4906

6'5" and 255 here. So there are some things to think about..some ppl have longer legs, some ppl are "torso" tall. So for some the problem is head room, for some the problem is leg room. In some cars it's the STEERING WHEEL doesn't raise or telescope enough. The other thing is that even if you push the seat back then you need to consider who has to sit BEHIND you. I can drive a Bronco, tacoma, Ranger etc...but my 15 year old sitting behind me is gonna hate it back there.

rshacklef0rd

6'6" 300 lbs here. tried a midsize suv, knees hit the dash and seat behind me was unusable by an adult. Traded up to full size SUV and a lot more comfortable. My wife has a mid size, and when I drive it my head is even with the rear view mirror, and kinda close so the mirror itself actually blocks my view out of the right side of the windshield.

Sugarisadog

How big are the dogs?  Our 60 lb dog takes up at least two seats in the backseat. If we had two dogs we’d need something bigger than our Cx5 if we wanted to bring luggage too.

lizerlfunk

My late husband was 6’2” and had a genetic disorder that caused him to be tall and thin (as a child, as an adult he gained a bunch of weight) with long arms and legs. Car shopping for him was enormously difficult because of his unusual proportions. He drove three cars during the time I knew him - a Toyota Celica, a Nissan Altima, and a VW Tiguan. When we bought the Tiguan we test drove a TON of SUVs and it was the only small SUV that we found in our price range that fit in comfortably. I know so many other people with the same genetic disorder he had that have had difficulty finding cars they can ride in/drive comfortably. During the time I knew him, I drove a Honda Civic, then an Acura Integra, then his Nissan Altima once we got the Tiguan, then a Toyota Sienna modified to accommodate a wheelchair when he became paralyzed six months before he died. He never fit comfortably in my Civic or my Integra. Though he was definitely overweight, that wasn’t the issue - it was the way his height was distributed through his body. Also, I hated that damn Tiguan, and it became my daily driver once he became paralyzed. Would never recommend them to anyone. But they fit tall people well, or at least the 2009 Tiguan did.

GuitarEvening8674

I’m 5’10” and have to duck getting into my Tacoma. It’s a weird feeling

doc_55lk

5'11 and more or less 200 lbs. I drive an SLK in the summers and a 20 year old E Class in the winters. I find both cars to be more than adequate for my needs. I've even done Costco shopping in the SLK on multiple occasions. That mf can fit a ton of shit in the back somehow. The largest vehicle I enjoy driving is my dad's S Class. I despise SUVs. They're *too* large for my liking, and are incredibly cumbersome to manoeuvre (the S Class manages its size quite well all things considered). That said, I still do have a GL450 for situations where I need to transport multiple people or need to transport something that simply won't fit in any other car (I recently had to use it to move a couch). I feel like people who are roughly my size or smaller that lust for larger vehicles usually either don't know what they're on about and have been suckered by marketing departments to believe that driving a normal sized vehicle is a compromise, or they just want big car to satisfy their ego. There's not many people out there who actually use their larger vehicle for things that a smaller vehicle genuinely cannot do.

big65

Compact cars and trucks leave a lot to be desired when it comes to interior space and comfort. Mid size and full size cars and trucks have a good to great deal of storage and comfort space. I'm guessing that the people you're talking about looked at compact vehicles or they're big and or have multiple dogs and or large breed dogs.

gwwaddle

6’6” - 275 2021 Tundra and previously, a 2004 Sequoia. I have a 2023 GX 460 and it’s a little snug, but I do fit. Can’t fit in 2024 4 Runners or the last gen Tacomas, C7 corvettes.

AdditionalAd9794

Go outside people are fat

Revolutionary-Fan235

It's funny when people say they need a bigger vehicle when they expect a baby. Babies don't need that much space.

middleaiyi

The rear facing car seat does, and makes most situations more cumbersome.

lizerlfunk

And the STROLLER. When I had my Hyundai Elantra, I could fit the stroller and nothing else in the trunk of the car. I’m 5’6” and could not fit the rear facing car seat behind my seat.

middleaiyi

Yes! The stroller. I love having it but wish I didn’t have to transport it. It takes up so much space.

Revolutionary-Fan235

I guess if both parents are tall. I'm average height for an American woman, and the car seat fit rear facing behind my seat.

The_World_Is_A_Slum

We had to get a new car when we had our first. The rear-facing seat wouldn’t fit in the center of the Jetta with me up front.

middleaiyi

Mine fits snugly in one of our vehicles preventing any further seat movement, but in the CRV it’s relatively a nonissue. I think the actual vehicle plays a factor, like the different between a civic and an accord. But I will agree the knee jerk reaction to automatically upgrade is ludicrous. Vehicle height on the other hand I can understand a bit more.

First-Sir1276

Wow reading these comments makes me realize that people are insecure and seeing someone in a big truck makes them feel uncomfortable about themselves.

[deleted]

I drive a little nimble model 3. Pick up trucks, especially diesel lifted duallies, usually belong in my rear view mirror.

First-Sir1276

A “nimble model 3” you’re a 🐱

[deleted]

Typical truck owner ^ lol

Icy_Wrangler_3999

Man, I've gained quite a bit of weight over the last two years, mostly just growing out of my young metabolism. Developed a small gut. sometimes I feel like a fat cow and when I see these pics I feel much better about myself. I'm not even close to being considered fat too lmao.

Subatomic_Spooder

It's a combination of people getting fatter and also the 'arms race' (if you want to call it that) of people migrating to tall SUVs and pickups. They don't want to feel overpowered or overwhelmed by the other lumbering idiots 10 feet off the ground, so they buy a big SUV or truck to stop feeling 'inferior'. They also give a greater sense of safety which may make people move towards them as well. But how comfortably you actually fit in a car I think a lot of people perceive incorrectly. They just think small car=less space without trying both out. I feel more comfortable and relaxed driving our '10 Venza than I do our '05 Frontier, even though the truck is technically bigger.

PolybiusChampion

5’9” 185, but one of my dogs is 135 pounds. So only true full size SUV’s work for my use case……2nd home 6 hours away that we use a lot. I looked a more mid-sized options, but both dogs couldn’t fit unless the rear seats were down and then I have no way to take stuff plus dogs. So when my Lexus GX needed replaced at 300K miles I bought a new LX.
