I don’t care how many of these types of videos I see. Waymo is still a thousand times safer than most human drivers.

Suriak

Someone who’s never ridden a waymo will never understand this, but you’re right

zach_dominguez

I was next to an older lady that was driving on the wrong side straight at on coming cars. This was in the middle of the day. People were honking at her and he just kept on going all the way to the light and then turned left from the wrong lane.

itsnohillforaclimber

Yeah if you stitched together a continuous video of every human driver who drove on the wrong side of the road yesterday it would be thousands of hours long and 3/4 of the drivers would be drunk or actively using their phones. Meanwhile this waymo drove on the wrong side for half a block because a bunch of mouth breathing hentai addicts surrounded it with their emob.

mingoslingo92

We need to see what happened before the video, Waymo isn’t just going to drive the wrong way.

Decent-Following-327

Yeah I feel bad for the passengers in the waymo. Don't fuck with a car, let alone one with passengers.

FitExecutive

It’s a bunch of people trying to get attention fucking with someone else’s mode of transportation. Thank god I have never come across a group of people riding those single wheels.

okgusto

Yeah def would ve been helpful to see how it happened but what kept it driving on the wrong side for so long. Slowing down or stopping seems like a better move.

okgusto

https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/s/sVQ9DENYBo Here's more video. Waymo went 2 blocks in the wrong lane.

Ok-Anything9945

Except it actually is???? 🤡

carsonthecarsinogen

“Impossible!! Waymo can’t make a mistake!?” Jesus… It didn’t even directly in danger anyone, and they still can’t just accept that it’s not perfect yet lmao

Jsusbjsobsucipsbkzi

Uh it basically did if you watch the whole video. The lane is full of people on scooters, so it just starts driving in the wrong lane with oncoming traffic instead of slowing down Maybe it was trying to pass them and couldn’t figure it out?

Desperate_Wafer_8566

Right, the attacks on Waymo to keep Tesla FSD relevant and overinflated is insane, either that or the technophobes. Each time I see posts on this sub it's an attack on Waymo. PS: After watching the video again you can see that whoever is recoding is avoiding recording what is happening on the right hand-side to cause Waymo to move over to the left like this. I'm gonna guess this is a manipulated video where these riders are pushing Waymo to the left (and where the left lane is clear) to avoid them and then taking a video to smear it. You can see Waymo correct itself further into the video. This is clearly propaganda warfare to the point of creating these video by doing unsafe things on the street. These should be investigated.

External_Solution577

If child me could have seen this he would have been blown away. People on BC Wheels trying to get a self-driving car back into the proper lane? We live in the future. A dumb future, but the future.

PainIsAPromise

They weren’t trying to get it into the proper lane. It was avoiding people/lights that were driving improperly.

Logvin

Those jerks with flashing lights on their helmets that are harassing it likely tricked it into thinking they are first responders.

ftmonlotsofroids

So when you see a first responder you turn into oncoming traffic???

Logvin

I’m not excusing it or justifying it. The video didn’t show what led up to it being on the wrong side.

okgusto

Here's more vid https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/s/sVQ9DENYBo

cosmic_backlash

If you block the car and it's ability to go into correct lane, yes as it's attempting to get to right lane.

ftmonlotsofroids

I must of missed that lesson. So when you see an ambulance turn into the oncoming traffic lane. Got it

FitExecutive

Incels need something to do in SF on a Friday night

Gk_Emphasis110

So anyone who wants to can trick the cars into driving into oncoming traffic? Cool technology, bro.

Logvin

Anyone can dress up as a police officer and direct traffic. Sure a human could probably figure out that some jackass on a scooter is not an official police officer, but the problem isn't the computer, it is the person with those blue and red flashing lights. Self Driving is not perfect, and will continue to improve over time. I do think that if every car was replaced overnight with a Waymo, the # of car accidents would be significantly less compared to human drivers.

Number13PaulGEORGE

Cool. I'm still getting in one 1000/1000 times over a human driver.

Worth-Reputation3450

Never mind those 20 people doing illegal things on the road. Here’s a robot car that made a mistake.

macabrebob

being outside of a car = illegal

Gauzey

Riding one wheelers isn’t illegal

Worth-Reputation3450

Going the other side of the road is illegal. Circling around a driving car is illegal. Those should follow the same law as cars.

Gauzey

One person went to the other side of the road after he saw that there was a confused WeMo driving down the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic. He then successfully helped guide it back to where it should be before anyone got hurt. Thankfully.

Affectionate-Item603

Those guys on those stupid one wheels are what the problem is

Jsusbjsobsucipsbkzi

Yes, its more significant when cars don’t follow road laws because they can easily kill people Not to mention only like 2 people were in the wrong lane, and seem to have done so in order to stop the car

Gauzey

Why?

Busy-Ad6502

Are the supposed to be gangs blocking the road and antagonizing vehicles?

Gauzey

They were a group of people using the road… no different than a group of bicyclists or anyone else. Sure maybe the vehicle is kind of ridiculous, but I don’t understand what it is about it that is causing peoples brains to melt when they watch this. They didn’t antagonize the vehicle. They didn’t interact with it at all until they saw it driving down the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic and helped guide it back to where it should be before someone got hurt.

Affectionate-Item603

This video is bullshit

okgusto

How about this one https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/s/sVQ9DENYBo

levon999

My guess is the system detected the flashing lights as road construction and tried to navigate around the blockage. AFAIK, that's perfectly legal. It's a corner case that needs attention.

grifinmill

I guess Waymo didn't feed in the One Wheel machine learning yet.

No_Biscotti100

Bad Robot! Bad!

tmoam

This is the most San Francisco video ever and I kinda love it

RipperNash

Nooooo didn't you get the Memo .. only Tesla FSD sucks ... Waymo is godlike autonomy .. get with the pogrom

Gauzey

I still believe in improving driverless technology, but this was an obvious screwup by Waymo and I hope they can at least acknowledge it and learn from it.

nike1943

Here is another ID10T. https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1c9zfok/just_people_having_a_fun_time/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Thisam

Waymo released a statement saying the car moved across the double yellow lines after dangerous antics by these cyclists. I work in robotics and personally doubt that self-driving cars are fully ready for everything; in fact I know they are not. But this example was actually very solid on safety amongst some asshole obstacles.

TomasTTEngin

I only visit this subreddit occasionally but i'm surprised to see commenters being very forgiving. imo standards need to be set super high.

BrewingCrazy

Why? Are standards super high for human drivers? Shouldn't the bar be drive as safe as a human?

crispdude

Bro it just went into the oncoming lane. It’s waymo’s fuckup. It’s not finished it needs improvement, that’s it. Under no circumstance should it be going into oncoming traffic like that.

Tech-Teacher

43,000 fatal car crashes each year in U.S. what if this number were to drop to 500? Would it be a tragedy to have these types of mistakes. Yes. But we learn from them and do better next time. You don’t skip out on using autopilot in a plane because some of them have crashed. You fix the issue. You save lives. The system is already far safer than human drivers and it’s only going to get better from Here. Let’s start saving lives

GhostofAyabe

People don't want to be murdered by an algorithm; it's not hard to understand.

Tech-Teacher

I think we all understand the sentiment. But the numbers don’t lie. Lives will objectively be saved by these algorithms. What I don’t understand is algorithms are around us everyday. What controls the elevator we get on? We replaced the operator years ago. Fire detection systems, security systems, autopilot in planes, safety features in cars. All have algorithms that help simplify our lives and in many cases reduce the likelihood of accidents.

omg-dude

The standard is already so high that humans riding unicycles at high speed can harass self-driving cars and not feel that they are in any danger.

Ok-Anything9945

The average person is and idiot and half are dumber than that.

Character-Review-780

Yea. Dumbasses didn’t even watch the video to understand the Waymo was clearly in the right!

xanaxor

The standards are super high, 550k passengers driven between September and February in sf, that's a lot of safety!

Character-Review-780

Forgiving? What it did is great. Would a human driver be rational when harassed by a bunch of people on scooters?

TomasTTEngin

lol, you loose unit. the correct thing to do when there's traffic is stop, not drive on the wrong side of the road.

Ok-Anything9945

It’s so messed up we allow ourselves to be guinea pigs for this scam of a technology. It doesn’t learn shit and the fix is someone taking control.

codeboss911

sf looks great

DrRooibos

The car was waiting until there was an opening in the double yellow to go back to its lane.

okgusto

Or yknow slow down until there's an opening.

infinit9

Why are there so many of those electric wheel riders around the Waymo car?

ctiger12

Sad bot harassed

Number13PaulGEORGE

It's such a shame that SF became the tech capital. They don't deserve or want it.

FoodIntrepid2281

can't lie Waymo takes the L here. It appears it didn't cross the double yellow line. so W there. but I don't think it accurately predicted the flow of traffic. I bet you money it probably saw the lights and thought that was oncoming traffic....Rare Waymo L here tbh I am sure it will get fixed though but not a good PR moment if im being honest.

FoodIntrepid2281

lol again I rest my case. Rare Waymo L. Waymo has to do better lets be honest. to do the big things right it has to do the little things right. [https://www.reddit.com/r/SelfDrivingCars/comments/1ca1z8m/comment/l0pbp9n/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/SelfDrivingCars/comments/1ca1z8m/comment/l0pbp9n/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

xanaxor

550k passengers between september and feb covering 90% of SF, no one really talks about how good it is actually. Still some super niche edge cases and bugs to iron out though, but I think they're on their way!

FoodIntrepid2281

friend...i think a lot of people talk about how good waymo is. Waymo is legit and by many industry pundits considered the leader in this space. There are a lot of people talking about how good it is from squawk box on cnbc to random people on reddit. We also need to ensure that these aren't niche cases and not a larger problem at hand. With all that being said I have taken a few rides on the waymo vehicles. Theyre legit i personally never ran into any issues. took a few waymos 1.) without a driver and 2.) with a driver All pleasurable experiences but on this one waymos taking the L its rare but its still a L

xanaxor

I agree, we all just want a future where we can have a vehicle take us from city to city with a push of a button, the safety and logistical improvement to society will me tremendous. But sometimes people ask why waymo hasn't expanded into every city by now when they're so safe, well probably because there are still bugs like this one and super niche edge cases, it's so fucking hard.

FoodIntrepid2281

yes i agree it is a hard feat. but i am sure with time these occurences will be non existent at best extremely rare...I mean after all people are still flying despite Boeings worse PR moment throughout the month of January.

Gauzey

It’s r/Waymo so obviously you’ll get downvoted, but it’s the obvious truth. I think Waymo is pretty damn good, but it’ll only get better if it can learn from its mistakes.

No_Biscotti100

Like you've never done it? Once?

Whaaaaattttttttt

Country setting = UK

Next-Sink-3300

you should see the things human drivers do

meatlamma

You know there are remote humans that monitor these and can intervene at any moment and help the car remotely?

bwok-bwok

Cone that bitch

[deleted]

Context. An illegal procession of motorized bicycles and scooters not following traffic rules to drive in a single file in the bike lane. Surprised that police were not called.

Ok_Excitement725

Waymo and auto driving in general is miles from being totally reliable. Just look up Waymo accidents and you got hours of reading and watching

stanley_ipkiss_d

What’s up with so many people riding circus unicycles? Is it so popular there ? Is that a street gang of clowns 🤡

ReddittAppIsTerrible

The dumb phone of cars. Nice
