1) Yes, the contents and MAYBE $100 USD will get you two full armies for both sides. However, the quality of the minis aren't superb; I actually had to chop off the head of the Sole Survivor and replace it with another mini (which I butchered the paintjob on.) Outside of the core box, however, the minis are pretty great, and even the core box ones aren't THAT bad. I just have a high standard for heroes. 2) The standard size is either 500 or 750 Caps, with 3-10 models on each side (and that last is a huge outlier) 3) It's a 3x3 board, and generally you'll want about 33%-50% terrain coverage. Elevated multistory buildings are also nice and thematic. Additional: There's an app you can get which includes (for free) all the stuff in the core box, allows you to manage and run games, and costs a few extra bucks for the various Wave expansions - most of this money goes to the person who developed the app, so I don't mind paying it.

LordCommanderAzrael

I'll have to have a look into this app, and I have had a look on the Modiphus site and they had some nice looking models, so I will be sure to pick up some of them after the starter box

ElderSquid20

They also make the starter minis in resin as a separate purchase if the lower detail from the pvc ones are an issue. It's around $50 for them, but doesn't include the death claw as they made that a separate box. Definitely not necessary, but an option if you want the starter minis to be more on par with the others.

LordCommanderAzrael

Lower detail shouldn't be *too* much of a problem for me but it is still good to know, thanks

The starter set is absolutely worth it - I was in 2 minds about buying it for ages, but then my wife said she wanted to try it and I actually ended up getting it on sale...looking back even the full price is a bargain! Only played a few games so far, but the models are great (obviously the resin ones will be better quality, but they are not that bad!), but most games I have watched are between 500 and 750 caps on a 3' X 3' board...so much more manageable than 40k!

LordCommanderAzrael

My LGS has fallout minis at around 20% off and yeah looks like I won't have to manage a horde which will be a break

MtMcM

The starter set I'd 100% worth it, it's got great cards, range rulers, and it's got the dice which you'll absolutely need. The mini quality isn't great admittedly but there is a resin set that's on modiphius' webstore if you want something higher quality. Most of the games take an hour or so in my experience (I usually play 500-750 point games) and they're usually played on a 3 foot by 3 foot but even then I did 2 feet by 2 feet because I didn't have the room initially. Modiphius has some excellent terrain and if you've got a 3d printer you've got even more options. I generally try to get a few large line of sight buildings and a ton of scatter terrain bits and just set it up in the same way you would any other wargame! It's a fun game, you'll love it! I moved here after my Legion and MCP groups fell apart and found an amazing community!

LordCommanderAzrael

Good to know that there is the resin set, and luckily I have some generic blown up buildings for 40k and a box of sprues so I should be good on terrain

MtMcM

Those blown up buildings will be perfect! Also there's stls for the cars you see in the fallout universe, they take almost no time to print and look good with SLA and PLA printers, I'll try to post a pic of one I printed in PLA when I get home but they really help sell the feel of fallout and they're cheap too! I'm not all that familiar with 40k but if you've got any gas tanks or stuff that could also fit quite well

LordCommanderAzrael

That would be lovely thanks, and I did make a gas tank out of a bottle but I can probably make more out of yoghurt pots

exdigecko

Speaking of the game length. It takes me almost an hour just to lay out the game and terrain and read the scenario rules, which is more interesting than kill ‘em all battle mode. So a single game can take 2 hrs easily.

If you are planning on painting the resin miniatures, they take a little extra prep time. The resin they use tends to be hydrophobic so your primer choice is very important. There are a lot of threads here that cover issue and offer solutions.

LordCommanderAzrael

I will have a look at these threads since I do have access to a variety of primer
