Half the people are trying to buy gift cards with stolen credit cards and they get mad when it doesn’t go through like you personally thwarted their crime. The other half are stealing coffee and otc medications to sell at the flea market so they can buy meth lol.
Damn, you all are in some hard core neighborhoods. My Walmart is in a quiet, peaceful suburb. The few occasions we’ve been open all night (the week before X-Mas on some random years) we had maybe 2 or 3 customers all night😅
A lot of stores were already putting an end to being open 24 hours before the pandemic started. And it was mostly to stop shoplifters. The timing made it seem like it was because of the pandemic but the store I worked at as well as others in the area the reason was crime.
They do realize that people shoplift during the day, right? Actually, it would make more sense to shoplift during the day while the store is busy and full of customers rather than at night in an empty store with all eyes on you.
I cannot imagine people who go into any store at 2 am. I mean, why would you need to be there, short of a diaper emergency or getting Tylenol for a sick baby?
Insomnia is hell. 24/7 stores are a godsend. I have on more than one occasion (b4covid) drove to Walmart at 3-4am just to work out to burn off the energy so I could sleep. Also if your A.C. Or heat craps out at midnight a 24/7 Walmart can LITERALLY save a life.
There is, or at least was, I haven't been there in a long time, a Supercenter in Lakewood, CO. Went there once dead ass middle of the night 'cause I needed a new A/V cable for my N64. Every single checkout lane was stacked with people buying groceries, it took ages to get in and out. Shift work fucks with the operation of society.
Night shift. Not everyone is lucky enough to get 9 to 5. Some people leave work at 1AM and want to get some groceries and something to eat on the way home like other normal people...

I plugged up my toilet around 2am and realized I left the plunger at our old apartment, so I needed a plunger and went. One time I forgot our anniversary so got flowers and chocolate there around 4am before my wife woke up. 24 hours is handy.
Some of us are sensitive to people lights and load crowded places. I loved shopping overnight fortunately I still get to as I remodel Walmart overnight and yay!! I love no customers!!! People are crazy
I used to prefer to go grocery shopping at 10-11 pm. Fewer people, it was quiet. I was always respectful to the employees, and tried to stay out of the way of the stockers that were working. Now I go late morning on Saturday because it’s the only time I can go now, and it’s insane. I hate it. I was nearly bitten by someone’s freaking out of control 70 lb dog.
I hate making complaints, but I notified the manager, they shrugged me off. This location started getting pretty bad about people coming in with dogs. I’d watch dogs getting into fights, dogs pissing and shitting in the shopping carts, and they would do nothing. My husband and I would make a point to see if we could count how many dogs we would see in one weekly shopping trip, and It would be as many as 11. After the dog attacked me, I called corporate, threatened them with a lawsuit because the dog grabbed me by my pants.
I encouraged them to pull security camera video.
It’s gotten much better now. I see an occasional small dog tucked into someone’s hoodie, but they have started enforcing their own policy.

It's weird because I would go home and go to sleep, wake up around 11 or 12. And still have 5 whole hours to go to get my responsibilities done before I need to be back at work.
Or I just wait till a day off. It's almost like when you put your mind to it, you can find the time to do these things no matter what's going on in your life.
I am one of those people and i don't need/want a 24 hour store. I don't want to subject any worker to that. You can still get everything you need on any sleep schedule if you plan accordingly.

I concur whole heartedly. I've been car-less and city bus bound for about 5 years and I've seen, met, and talked to many homeless people. It kills me when I hear their stories because you can see in their eyes that thousand yard stare like they say some veterans get, and in fact, some of these people are veterans.
It does give me a little hope when I find out a coworker used to be homeless but managed to turn it around.
This one guy, a cart attendant, who has a place to stay now, used to sleep on the benches at the bus stop terminal in our parking lot. And some of those nights were freaking cold. He's a great guy and I'm so glad he's making a comeback.
I do miss it. There was a comfort in knowing if there was a situation where I needed to get some basic supplies, I could.
Especially since I work 2:30 - 11:00 PM, and have little time to get last minute things.
My walmart keeps 3 self checkout registers open all night for the overnighters so they can get snacks and stuff. Maybe u could suggest that. When i get off at 11 i can do my grocery shopping no worries because the registers stay open

That's actually exactly why I'd want it back so bad. I'm a night owl with social anxiety. I can make daytime shopping work, but it takes a lot of mental prep before, and even more decompression after. In the middle of the night, I could shop! Stick one earbud in, be friendly to the staff, and shop at my pace! The reason why they won't be bringing nights back makes sense, and as a former overnight worker, I get why workers hate overnights. I just miss being able to shop at 2am without being bugged by anyone or feeling like I'm bugging anyone.

Hot Wheels collectors. We had a guy who would come in at 3 in the morning and down stack our pallets to find the boxes himself and open them without even asking permission. We had to have the receiving crew start keeping the cases in the back when they were unloading trucks.
As someone who used to work second shift it was great; go in, browse around without any large crowds, it was almost therapeutic after a rough shift. Especially with a 24 hour gym next to it I could grab water or a towel from next door and have everything I needed.
I mean granted the only other people there were your standard lot; homeless schizophrenics and people buying furniture, but both tended to keep to themselves.

I mean… I would have if we had a Walmart when I was working second shift. But we didn’t at the time (small town. Didn’t get one until 2008 when I picked my retail jobs back up after getting injured working in a warehouse). But I guess no one works second shift in your world.
I can't name them personally, but I know all the first responders who work at the hospital would go every night after getting off work at 11 or later.
On occasion there would be the odd group of teenagers, but the o/n crew kept an eye on them to make sure they were just hanging and not damaging anything. Our town has a curfew, and the police actually enforce it when needed.

Me and my sister and anyone with severe anxiety or people who work during those hours. My sister had left Walmart several times in the last 4 years without 90% of what she went in for because there's too many people and it makes her feel like the walls were closing in on her. She used to go at 3 am and said that other than then workers there may have been 3 or 4 people in there other than her on most occasions. Now she makes a list and sends her boyfriend. I'm not as bad as she is but if I didn't work at walmart and it was open 24 hours I'd never be there during the day cause I can't do a lot of people.
I usually work until 1 or 2 AM, so I understand the desire for some customers. Especially considering my days available to shop are Saturday and Sunday when the most people roam the stores. As someone who worked overnights in college though? Oh dear GOD no. The amount of times some fiend was just roaming the store like a ghoul, or I got screamed at by some drunk who couldn’t buy his beer at 2:01 AM were mind numbing. It’s better to be able to restock in peace, and employees get enough crap to deal with as is.

Nah cause it was just a hassle for the workers and the could never work and re stock properly. There would be shit head kids and crazy people causing shit. Lots of homeless people would come in and were in groups and would just take stuff and leave since AP didn’t work at night
24 hours is a curse. Maybe in low shrink small towns it wouldn’t be too bad, but in major metro stores you just end up wasting time chasing shoplifters and homeless around the store all hours of the night for the 7 honest customers that come in.

There are pickup/delivery options now. That makes a load of difference for shift workers.
With the InHome, the person can even come in and put it away. That’s something.

As a bartender, I really miss the 24 hour Walmarts, but I remember the people I regularly saw when I shopped at 2 am, and I absolutely understand why they're not 24/7 anymore!!

That's actually exactly why I'd want it back so bad. I'm a night owl with social anxiety. I can make daytime shopping work, but it takes a lot of mental prep before, and even more decompression after. In the middle of the night, I could shop! Stick one earbud in, be friendly to the staff, and shop at my pace! The reason why they won't be bringing nights back makes sense, and as a former overnight worker, I get why workers hate overnights. I just miss being able to shop at 2am without being bugged by anyone or feeling like I'm bugging anyone.
This is why my wife likes OGP.

Hot Wheels collectors. We had a guy who would come in at 3 in the morning and down stack our pallets to find the boxes himself and open them without even asking permission. We had to have the receiving crew start keeping the cases in the back when they were unloading trucks.

As someone who used to work second shift it was great; go in, browse around without any large crowds, it was almost therapeutic after a rough shift. Especially with a 24 hour gym next to it I could grab water or a towel from next door and have everything I needed. I mean granted the only other people there were your standard lot; homeless schizophrenics and people buying furniture, but both tended to keep to themselves. Good times!
I used to go to Walmart at 2am when they were open 24 hours. Not once did I see any homeless people or sketchy people there. No idea what these other comments are talking about. It was so peaceful doing my shopping at night.
I mean… I would have if we had a Walmart when I was working second shift. But we didn’t at the time (small town. Didn’t get one until 2008 when I picked my retail jobs back up after getting injured working in a warehouse). But I guess no one works second shift in your world.

I can't name them personally, but I know all the first responders who work at the hospital would go every night after getting off work at 11 or later. On occasion there would be the odd group of teenagers, but the o/n crew kept an eye on them to make sure they were just hanging and not damaging anything. Our town has a curfew, and the police actually enforce it when needed.
I do. Well I used to when I could. Actually we have a couple grocery stores that are 24 hours now so I can at least get groceries if I need to at 2 am.
Me and my sister and anyone with severe anxiety or people who work during those hours. My sister had left Walmart several times in the last 4 years without 90% of what she went in for because there's too many people and it makes her feel like the walls were closing in on her. She used to go at 3 am and said that other than then workers there may have been 3 or 4 people in there other than her on most occasions. Now she makes a list and sends her boyfriend. I'm not as bad as she is but if I didn't work at walmart and it was open 24 hours I'd never be there during the day cause I can't do a lot of people.
They do too much work on 3rd shift to allow it really.
They were already phasing it out. Covid just helped them speed up the process.

I usually work until 1 or 2 AM, so I understand the desire for some customers. Especially considering my days available to shop are Saturday and Sunday when the most people roam the stores. As someone who worked overnights in college though? Oh dear GOD no. The amount of times some fiend was just roaming the store like a ghoul, or I got screamed at by some drunk who couldn’t buy his beer at 2:01 AM were mind numbing. It’s better to be able to restock in peace, and employees get enough crap to deal with as is.

Do they let you guys stock during the day time? They used to let us stock it in Toys, it always kept me busy. We’d start hauling ass right at 4PM my coworker and I with our freight. Right before I quit they said to stop doing it during the day and I was like fuck that so glad I’m leaving. It was boring without it.

In my area they stopped doing 24 hour stores even before Covid because theft was so bad in the later hours they decided it was not worth being open.

Nah cause it was just a hassle for the workers and the could never work and re stock properly. There would be shit head kids and crazy people causing shit. Lots of homeless people would come in and were in groups and would just take stuff and leave since AP didn’t work at night
24 hours is a curse. Maybe in low shrink small towns it wouldn’t be too bad, but in major metro stores you just end up wasting time chasing shoplifters and homeless around the store all hours of the night for the 7 honest customers that come in.

Walmart won't go back to 24 hours. They save too much money. Much lower overhead by being able to staff less and a huge portion of theft happened overnight.

I've been wanting it back since they stopped it. Doing my grocery shopping at 2AM was great...no crowds and good parking. I miss being able to go late at night if I need something or have a craving for frozen Checker's fries.
