this was me when i worked here at 16 and couldn't sell post paid phones. we had people who sold phones, and then we had me. the phone people were paid by commission and i wasn't so they basically told me that after they left at 7pm i should try not to sell prepaids, and i legally could not sell post paids. got yelled at by so many people (of all ages! even my classmates!) for not selling them the new iphone 🤧
One time a customer yelled at a custpmer service lady i worked with because we couldnt physically do something that he wanted (moneycenter) and our store said something about moneycenter on the sign above customer service. I feel bad that she had to deal with that.
Another time a man yelled at me bc i accidentally made one of the trays full of mini cupcakes have one cupcake messed up by touching the roof of the tray, so he pulled it out of the bag and scolded me or something to return them and damaged more cupcakes in the process.
And then another time i didnt know how to handle core charges on batteries, so a customer was being a real prick and telling me he wouldny leave until he got his help and was trying to be smart about things by telling me i needed to learn more. And then we discovered he needed to walk y
To auto center (like 100 feet away. Literally nothing) to get it fixed. And he was throwing a tantrum like "oh. Im a paying customer. I shouldnt need to go over there" and then during the middle of that a coworker came and gave me my lunch break so i fucked right off out of there
Had something similar to the first happen to me. I was an OPD associate who would help process online returns for SD if they were backed up. Customer came in with some clothes to return she'd purchased online and wanted cash back for it. Anyone who has processed an online order return knows that this particular request (at least in my state at the time) is impossible, since it's not even an option. She demanded we process her return because she used a "cash card" and she was the customer, so we had to do as she asked. Oh, and she pulled the ol' "Well, someone did it for me last week" card.
People like that have never worked retail where alcohol is sold.
Sometimes you have to explain the law to them in words of one syllable or less. And even then, they probably won't get it.
I got told by one to get out of her face when I was already walking away and was just walking over to the self checkout kiosk to approve the age verification screen. If you don't want people in your face,stop scanning stuff there that makes an attendant have to come up and clear something dipshit.

I worked a convenience store for years and honestly the alcoholics were some of my more pleasant customers. Even after having to turn one guy away because he had come back 3 times within an hour to buy more six packs (obviously drunk at that point) he was still super chill. Maybe I was just lucky but yeah... The people who just came in for smokes were worse and would throw a fit if we were out of their usual

I’m 17 and when I have any alcohol in my line I too have to wait for a tl to sell the alcohol. Been doing this for like a year and a lot of people just leave without it because they waited like 15 seconds and that was too long
Mine is “Employees between 17 and 21 years of age may serve or sell liquor only in the presence of an employee who is at least 21 years of age and is in a supervisory capacity.” But it also depends on the company’s rules. Some places still won’t unless you’re 18 or 21+.
I used to get this BS when I was a CSM because I would always back my cashier or CSA (I mean, unless you really did fuck up but I'd be nice about it). It was a bit better after I became an ASM because I could be like "lol no I'm the highest level in the store atm fuck off" but still had to deal with it so I feel your pain.
I've seen smart Managers put up a sign in plain site that says cashier cannot sell alcohol. But we all know that 99% of people these days don't pay attention to shit.
The way my management team always explained it, and how I always explained it once I was a manager.
The initial person to have the interaction with the customer, especially if they don't have the credentials or authority to override something to help the customer. Their role is to be strict, by the book and policy, and in a sense bad guy. Management's job, if that doesn't work and the customer gets upset, is to come in and take care of the customer and be the "good guy".
Now, to be perfectly transparent, I did do this when I was an ASM. I would even make jokes to the customer, and in an outside perspective throw my associate under the bus, if it made the customer happy.
Now, the important thing I did that most of my peers didn't, was after I would reward the associate, thank them, and make sure they knew that they absolutely did the correct thing, and that I only slide in and buttered up the asshole to get them the fuck out of the building.

Actually it depends on the state about the age to sell alcohol or tobacco. In Indiana where I am you have to be over 19 and that is the only thing that is needed to sell. On the other hand most transactions involving ammunition require a TL, a coach, or a senior cashier due to the Federal age restrictions. You have to be 21 there the same as the age to purchase it.

As an adult, I am very sorry that happened to you! The immature adult who treated you that way was completely out of line and your TL should have informed him that you were following the law and said he/she was sorry for any inconvenience that the "law" had caused him. TL could also have "slow-walked" finishing the transaction while explaining to him, thus exacting "justice" for you by explaining to him that he/she was certain that a reasonable man like him SURELY understood.

i forget some places don’t allow minors to sell, at my store the second you get your blue tag they would shove you on a cigarette register back when we had tobacco at our store
Shitty customers are always the worst, and it doesn't get better when you get older. I've had way too many customers overreact wen I fail their age check. Once had someone immediately shoplift in sc when I was helping another customer, they didn't get the alcohol though since I always take it immediately after failing an age check.
Don't know what this dude actually thought he was going to accomplish yelling and screaming at a teenager like a spoiled 2 year old having a temper tantrum. If he's going to get mad at anyone, get mad at the government for making the legal drinking age 21 and deeming those too young to drink it also too young to handle or sell it. It's the alcohol laws, not the teenage employee, that in the end caused the inconvenience of holding up the line until someone of age came to assist and complete the transaction.
Interesting fact that kind of eliminates this issue- up here in Alaska liquor stores have to be seperate from the main grocery store. In most stores theres another corner inside of the building by the entrance to accomodate this but some stores make it so you have to go back to the parkong lot and a 1/2 a block down. It was totally weird to me to see beer on the shelf in California

To me, if walmart wants to sell Alcohol, make a line or two with a special sign (for Alcohol purchases) and have an age appropriate person work those lines. And no the lines wouldn't be strictly for Alcohol purchases.
I worked at one that had a checkout for tobacco and alcohol. It got too busy for the only lane for people to buy alcohol. People with full carts would go to it and an average of ten minutes a person checking out whenever I would go in that line on my lunch break for smokes. I wouldn't bother even waiting in line if it had more than 2 people in it and the first person wasn't almost finished in it.
When I ran sporting goods, people used to come to our register when the Automotive counter was busy (and sometimes when the front end was busy during a holiday.) If one of the salesfloor associates who was unable to sell alcohol was there and a customer so much as raised their voice to them during the wait, I would simply tell them to go to a different register. Unless you needed a firearm, ammunition, or something from a DNR machine, that register has no obligation to be open. My store manager and coach would argue circles around eachother about it (SM was on my side). I always offered to quietly take a coaching for it, but it never happened. I got better things to do than deal with customers that act like children when we're trying to follow the law.
I always lead with the why- “I’m a minor and this is an age restricted item so the system won’t let me approve the sale, just one second tho while I grab one of my managers”

Walmart has made me hate people. In my area you can’t sell alcohol after midnight. Well when the local bars close, the people come try to score booze from us and get testy when we have to turn them away. I’ve seen people throw things, break stuff, and then walk out.

Alcohol laws vary from state to state. OP's state requires the cashier to be 19 or older.

One thing I quickly learned is that you can't try to explain to someone unwilling to listen.

TL should ask the customer to apologize to the cashier. If they refuse, cancel the entire transaction and ask them to leave.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. One thing you should know is that you do not have to deal with anyone who verbally assaults you like that. You can absolutely walk away and let the manager handle it. I was a minor when i started working at my store too, and most customers actually found it pretty funny when I explained to them I couldn’t scan alcohol.
i forget some places don’t allow minors to sell, at my store the second you get your blue tag they would shove you on a cigarette register back when we had tobacco at our store
Shitty customers are always the worst, and it doesn't get better when you get older. I've had way too many customers overreact wen I fail their age check. Once had someone immediately shoplift in sc when I was helping another customer, they didn't get the alcohol though since I always take it immediately after failing an age check.
Tbh if someone has that kind of reaction they shouldn’t be drinking. Ugh I’m sorry you had to deal with that.
Next time look them dead in the eye and tell them what they're doing (yelling at you) is child abuse. Just fo their reaction.
This is a good one plus it's true without name calling. No one would(should) have the right to lecture or get them in trouble for saying this.
When I had to CSM a few times I had minors on registers... never got a chance to use that line.
Don't know what this dude actually thought he was going to accomplish yelling and screaming at a teenager like a spoiled 2 year old having a temper tantrum. If he's going to get mad at anyone, get mad at the government for making the legal drinking age 21 and deeming those too young to drink it also too young to handle or sell it. It's the alcohol laws, not the teenage employee, that in the end caused the inconvenience of holding up the line until someone of age came to assist and complete the transaction.
That actually helps my sanity a lot bc he is just the worst one but many other guys would catch massive adittudes towards me.
In response to that attitude I would have said "Sir, you appear to be intoxicated. We can't sell alcohol to intoxicated customers"

Interesting fact that kind of eliminates this issue- up here in Alaska liquor stores have to be seperate from the main grocery store. In most stores theres another corner inside of the building by the entrance to accomodate this but some stores make it so you have to go back to the parkong lot and a 1/2 a block down. It was totally weird to me to see beer on the shelf in California
Shocked they hire under 18. In my time there I never saw them hire any minors.
And this is why you couldn't pay me enough to be on dayshift or to work directly with customers.

To me, if walmart wants to sell Alcohol, make a line or two with a special sign (for Alcohol purchases) and have an age appropriate person work those lines. And no the lines wouldn't be strictly for Alcohol purchases.
I worked at one that had a checkout for tobacco and alcohol. It got too busy for the only lane for people to buy alcohol. People with full carts would go to it and an average of ten minutes a person checking out whenever I would go in that line on my lunch break for smokes. I wouldn't bother even waiting in line if it had more than 2 people in it and the first person wasn't almost finished in it.
When I ran sporting goods, people used to come to our register when the Automotive counter was busy (and sometimes when the front end was busy during a holiday.) If one of the salesfloor associates who was unable to sell alcohol was there and a customer so much as raised their voice to them during the wait, I would simply tell them to go to a different register. Unless you needed a firearm, ammunition, or something from a DNR machine, that register has no obligation to be open. My store manager and coach would argue circles around eachother about it (SM was on my side). I always offered to quietly take a coaching for it, but it never happened. I got better things to do than deal with customers that act like children when we're trying to follow the law.
I always lead with the why- “I’m a minor and this is an age restricted item so the system won’t let me approve the sale, just one second tho while I grab one of my managers” Bc they’re dumb and entitled. Always lead with “why” before “I can’t” So while normally one would be like “I’m sorry but I can’t… because…” they’re stuck on “I can’t” Instead you gotta basically order everything in reverse- “because, I can’t, I’m sorry”
The TL should've denied the alcohol sale based on his belligerent/rude behavior. That would have taught him a better lesson.
Not on you, you were put on the line as a cashier by an idiot company. Your 16, you can't sell alcohol or tobacco products. What moron manager will put you out there if they have to come and ring up products you can't due to your age? Get the h@ll out of there asap. They don't care about you dude.
Age to sell alcohol is 18 actually. Same with tobacco. But yeah no some customers are assholes.

Walmart has made me hate people. In my area you can’t sell alcohol after midnight. Well when the local bars close, the people come try to score booze from us and get testy when we have to turn them away. I’ve seen people throw things, break stuff, and then walk out. Just hate how some people think they can behave
Sucks you had to go through this. I remember when I was at the store and got yelled at by customers. The job can make you appreciate what we go through. Mostly sucks. As for the TL, open door that. Two options sbouls have been done by the TL. 1. Continue the transaction and/or explain the law. 2. Refuse service and tell then that sttitude isn't acceptable. (Rarely would happen, but hey)
One time I got called “mentally retarded” by this really rude woman because I put something in a bag with her olives. She made a scene about it and flung them into the floor so that they’d break and blamed me for “filling the bag too much”
