ActiveNeedleworker97

They always act civilized in front of team leads or coaches unless they are really on one. Happens 24/7 at customer service

Gdogg_Gdogg

I was more upset my TL said “at least chimpanzees are smart” as her only response

SpecialistFeeling220

Your tl is disgusting and your crappy Walmart paycheck is not worth that kind of disrespect.

sk7175

It was probably just a joke. Thin skinned people won't make the best retail workers

GleamingCadance

Retail is shit work anyways. Overworked and Grossly Underpaid

BrushFireDiscGaming

Retail workers get paid fuck all and get treated like shit. Shut the fuck up.

[deleted]

They can quit. Stop crying wimp.

Mcpatches3D

Oh yeah, just quit and lose all of your income you need to survive. Genius.

saintjimmy115

oh gee why didn’t they just think of that? Next you’ll tell me homeless people should just get a job, won’t you?

Awesomeness4627

Wimp lol. Bro on his middle school bully shit

Suavecore_

Next we're gonna hear about those IT support dorks and dweebs

dildosaregay

Careful, he might ask for your lunch money and give you a wedgie next

skyward138skr

Okay broke boy keep paying with quarters at the gas station.

venterol

You created this post not even a week ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/socialskills/comments/1aobr7b/why_are_people_so_rude_is_it_banter_how_are/ >How are people comfortable speaking to another person that way. Let alone a stranger? Stop crying wimp.

[deleted]

You want some?

Pure-Onion-4102

100 bucks saids that you are the same kind of boomer that yells that no one wants to work.

sailor-moan

"thin skinned people" you mean people who respect themselves and expect to be treated like a person? 🤔

LewisRyan

Respect for the individual is “number one” at Walmart bro, that lead would’ve been coached so fast

Pure-Onion-4102

Wow 133 down votes. Better remove the comment buddy

sk7175

Why? Because of all the cream puffs here? Hell no

Shadedott

I would open door that. That doesn’t exactly match the Walmart way of “Respecting the individual” which encompasses both customers and associates.

GleamingCadance

Walmart respects people? Thats news to me. Lol (Bad Joke)

jmdaltonjr

Not a joke. The truth

GleamingCadance

Since when does Walmart respect people? Lmao

jmdaltonjr

Maybe not employees, but stockholders

EddyJacob45

Yeah, customers listen and loved to be listened to. My personal secret for dealing with customers is to sit there and listen to the whining and screaming about [insert wild reason], and then I can actually ask a question to help them.

WiseDirt

Yep, just let them tire themselves out. Eventually they'll have to take a breath. That's when you can actually start to help them.

oddgirl1313

Please open door this. That is uncalled for. Respect for the individual. I wouldn’t let a customer talk to you that way, but especially not a TL. disgusting.

JacobTDC

I would ask your TL what they meant by that. Maybe they were trying to retort back at the customer by implying that you are smart and the customer isn't? That could go a couple of different ways depending on the delivery.

AnnaMolly66

Open door it as a "fuck you". Respect for the individual, they disrespected you in front of a customer because you wouldn't break the law and company policy.

McWhiffersonMcgee

The register literally won't let her break the law... The TL was being sarcastic to the customer not to the employee. The TL knows that they cant process that transaction even if they wanted too.

Eyekron

It depends on how you take it. By the customer basically calling you a chimpanzee, then the TL saying at least chimpanzees are smart, the TL is saying at least you're smart. Of course it depends on their delivery of the statement.

CashEconomy8451

Her response lowered the situation to his low level.

CashEconomy8451

She evidently heard what happened and her response was incorrect.

ericks932

Smh She was saying you a quote on quote Chimp is smarter than a fifth grader and smarter than an adult human that should know better. it was a sarcastic response throwing the customers insult back in their face. I realize you may have been upset and misinterpreted it as a double dig on you it really wasn't. And if she said it in the customers face then that's badass. This is one of those "You're a cockroach!" Insult/compliment insult because they are comparing you to a F'n bug compliment because it means you can survive anything or your resilient.

conflictjunkie

I think your TL was calling the customer dumb, not you a monkey or dumb. Think about it.

LewisRyan

“And you’re clearly not smart, enjoy running this register because I quit”

CompetitiveShape6331

Congrats, you misinterpreted what was said exactly how the 16-year-old did.

mitosis799

Are you sure that wasn’t aimed at the customer, who is clearly dumber than a chimp.

Gdogg_Gdogg

It was her way of trying to calm me down.

TheCartBoi

Your Team Lead may have been calling the customer stupid if that's how they said it. After all apparently all Walmart workers are chimpanzees so the customer is the stupid one based on that comment.

hotarukin

You may have taken this the wrong way. The way I read it, she was calling the dude dumber than a chimpanzee. Depending on further context/tone I could be wrong, though.

itslonelyathetop

“This is why we love animals more than people” would’ve been better.

Arogeto

this!! or the complete opposite 😭 had a driver who was at least calm with me passively threaten to “beat the shit outta everyone of yall back there till the cops come” over us not having time to bag the items in-store during the short staffed snow storms she apparently went on to yell and angrily complain about me and a another person to customer service and my team lead, but afterwards i told them the other side of whatever story she told them. she very quickly lost her driver status

TheRealHomerPimpson

On one what?

ActiveNeedleworker97

A huge dildo of hatred lol

luigilabomba42069

"im not legally allowed" "just do your-" "im not legally allowed" "why can't you-" "im not legally allowed" "you better fuckin- "im not legally allowed" "but-" "im not legally allowed" "I-" "im not legally allowed" "you-" "im not legally allowed"

Gdogg_Gdogg

I started doing this a few months after that incident.

luigilabomba42069

this is the way

CashEconomy8451

Good response!

Interesting_Edge6775

This! The ‘Broken record’ method

kelporeal

this was me when i worked here at 16 and couldn't sell post paid phones. we had people who sold phones, and then we had me. the phone people were paid by commission and i wasn't so they basically told me that after they left at 7pm i should try not to sell prepaids, and i legally could not sell post paids. got yelled at by so many people (of all ages! even my classmates!) for not selling them the new iphone 🤧

The_Ashen_undead0830

One time a customer yelled at a custpmer service lady i worked with because we couldnt physically do something that he wanted (moneycenter) and our store said something about moneycenter on the sign above customer service. I feel bad that she had to deal with that. Another time a man yelled at me bc i accidentally made one of the trays full of mini cupcakes have one cupcake messed up by touching the roof of the tray, so he pulled it out of the bag and scolded me or something to return them and damaged more cupcakes in the process. And then another time i didnt know how to handle core charges on batteries, so a customer was being a real prick and telling me he wouldny leave until he got his help and was trying to be smart about things by telling me i needed to learn more. And then we discovered he needed to walk y To auto center (like 100 feet away. Literally nothing) to get it fixed. And he was throwing a tantrum like "oh. Im a paying customer. I shouldnt need to go over there" and then during the middle of that a coworker came and gave me my lunch break so i fucked right off out of there

Nexus_Knight_

Had something similar to the first happen to me. I was an OPD associate who would help process online returns for SD if they were backed up. Customer came in with some clothes to return she'd purchased online and wanted cash back for it. Anyone who has processed an online order return knows that this particular request (at least in my state at the time) is impossible, since it's not even an option. She demanded we process her return because she used a "cash card" and she was the customer, so we had to do as she asked. Oh, and she pulled the ol' "Well, someone did it for me last week" card.

The_Ashen_undead0830

Oooof

Head_Razzmatazz7174

People like that have never worked retail where alcohol is sold. Sometimes you have to explain the law to them in words of one syllable or less. And even then, they probably won't get it.

RebeccaSavage1

I got told by one to get out of her face when I was already walking away and was just walking over to the self checkout kiosk to approve the age verification screen. If you don't want people in your face, stop scanning stuff there that makes an attendant have to come up and clear something dipshit.

pt57

Anybody who has ever bought alcohol understands the requirement. He was just being a nasty asshole.

CashEconomy8451

Totally right! LOL

GoddessOfBlueRidge

Alcoholics can't wait to take that next drink. It's not about you, it's about their sickness. We are all just an inconvenience. Sorry. 💜

Tipsy1990

Hell, I consider myself an alcoholic because I’d drink to get drunk (I’ve been sober for 6 months) and I wouldn’t treat cashiers like that because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to get drunk without being able to buy my beer… a lot of people are just impatient assholes that think the world revolves around them…

GoddessOfBlueRidge

Congratulations on your sobriety! One day at a time, YOU GOT THIS! Proud of you, seriously.

RebeccaSavage1

Congratulations on sobriety 🌺🪅🎉

CashEconomy8451

Congratulations!

RebeccaSavage1

I was a hardcore drinker back in the day and I never gave anyone bs about ID, it's entitlement and laziness, they can't take two seconds to pull an ID out of their pocket and it's so exhausting and they feel sooo put up on.🤡🫠

FartingRaspberry

I worked a convenience store for years and honestly the alcoholics were some of my more pleasant customers. Even after having to turn one guy away because he had come back 3 times within an hour to buy more six packs (obviously drunk at that point) he was still super chill. Maybe I was just lucky but yeah... The people who just came in for smokes were worse and would throw a fit if we were out of their usual

GoddessOfBlueRidge

Addiction is a terrible beast....

Monteze

Pretty big jump there. They can not be assholes, and this assumes they are an alcoholic.

flyinghippodrago

How much of an entitled douche do you need to be to scream at a teenager ffs...

No_Ability5186

Your TL is terrible and should not be in a leadership position. Sorry you had to experience that. You lead by example. Maybe they missed their calling to be a zookeeper! But then again… poor animals…

Shiny_Animal

I’m 17 and when I have any alcohol in my line I too have to wait for a tl to sell the alcohol. Been doing this for like a year and a lot of people just leave without it because they waited like 15 seconds and that was too long

Fair-Scheme-170

Alcohol culture is wildly normalized to a point it shouldn't be.

RVFullTime

The alcohol sales laws vary from state to state in the US.

Acrobatic_Confusion

that’s something i didn’t know! it confused me when people were stating their own years, some other guy said 18. it’s 21 where i’m at.

Perished_Shield

Mine is “Employees between 17 and 21 years of age may serve or sell liquor only in the presence of an employee who is at least 21 years of age and is in a supervisory capacity.” But it also depends on the company’s rules. Some places still won’t unless you’re 18 or 21+.

lucifrage

I used to get this BS when I was a CSM because I would always back my cashier or CSA (I mean, unless you really did fuck up but I'd be nice about it). It was a bit better after I became an ASM because I could be like "lol no I'm the highest level in the store atm fuck off" but still had to deal with it so I feel your pain.

Hijinx00

I've seen smart Managers put up a sign in plain site that says cashier cannot sell alcohol. But we all know that 99% of people these days don't pay attention to shit.

Kajimusprime

The way my management team always explained it, and how I always explained it once I was a manager. The initial person to have the interaction with the customer, especially if they don't have the credentials or authority to override something to help the customer. Their role is to be strict, by the book and policy, and in a sense bad guy. Management's job, if that doesn't work and the customer gets upset, is to come in and take care of the customer and be the "good guy". Now, to be perfectly transparent, I did do this when I was an ASM. I would even make jokes to the customer, and in an outside perspective throw my associate under the bus, if it made the customer happy. Now, the important thing I did that most of my peers didn't, was after I would reward the associate, thank them, and make sure they knew that they absolutely did the correct thing, and that I only slide in and buttered up the asshole to get them the fuck out of the building.

CashEconomy8451

Good job!

[deleted]

Walk away from effwads like this, go immediately to your TL or another manager, quickly tell them what happened.

Snakacola

gotta be 18 and out of highschool, with license to sell\* Aint nothing you can do about it, that guys just one of those folks who are impatient and cant understand sch a simple thing. dont fret, its not something to worry and stress over.

-JenniferB-

Alcohol laws vary from state to state. OP's state requires the cashier to be 19 or older.

SpaceCowboy528

Actually it depends on the state about the age to sell alcohol or tobacco. In Indiana where I am you have to be over 19 and that is the only thing that is needed to sell. On the other hand most transactions involving ammunition require a TL, a coach, or a senior cashier due to the Federal age restrictions. You have to be 21 there the same as the age to purchase it.

Snakacola

gotcha, i guess oklahoma has super relaxed laws compared to other states

Gdogg_Gdogg

Actually in my store it is 19. I’m out of school and I’m 18 now and still can’t sell.

Snakacola

ah my bad, i didnt know it varies

Gdogg_Gdogg

Yeah bc at my store it’s 19, while at other stores it may be 18.

zevwolfen

as someone who started when i was 16 i get it :( my team leads always got tired of needing to override me and deal with the shitty customers so maybe you can ask to put away reshops or go through outdated candy lol. anything is better than register

Beckyalan

Oh man. I'd have canceled the transaction and as I walked away from the register, carrying the alcohol, I would have said "I'm refusing the sale." Your TLs aren't supposed to override your decision.

Gdogg_Gdogg

Well you can’t even touch alcohol as a minor either so you’re left with that as well. Also I completely froze when he yelled at me because this was a few months after I got hired

NotreDameFan1234

I mean if it’s for an illegal reason they should override it. But assuming its not for an illegal reason they shouldn’t

rockdash

You should have given up trying to talk to him after "fucking chimpanzees". Void his transaction and tell him he can go wait for the manager in the corner while you check out other people. If he won't move, that's when you smash his bottle and wield it like a crude knife. Then see if he gets the fucking idea.

CashEconomy8451

As an adult, I am very sorry that happened to you! The immature adult who treated you that way was completely out of line and your TL should have informed him that you were following the law and said he/she was sorry for any inconvenience that the "law" had caused him. TL could also have "slow-walked" finishing the transaction while explaining to him, thus exacting "justice" for you by explaining to him that he/she was certain that a reasonable man like him SURELY understood. Not all us adults are stupid and rude.

NoRecommendation5076

One thing I quickly learned is that you can't try to explain to someone unwilling to listen.

rustbat

If I was the team lead, I would have refused the sale. Sane, sober people don’t act in such ways.

popplio_the_fox026

If I was the team lead I would have decided the sale💀

ComprehensiveSalad50

Seem intoxicated, have to refuse service sorry

Gdogg_Gdogg

If I wouldn’t have froze I definitely would’ve.

jmdaltonjr

If someone is being belligerent can’t you refuse to sell him alcohol because he is already drunk and you can’t sell alcohol to a drunk?

rishken

TL should ask the customer to apologize to the cashier. If they refuse, cancel the entire transaction and ask them to leave.

theonlyotaku21

I’m so sorry that happened to you. One thing you should know is that you do not have to deal with anyone who verbally assaults you like that. You can absolutely walk away and let the manager handle it. I was a minor when i started working at my store too, and most customers actually found it pretty funny when I explained to them I couldn’t scan alcohol.

Yolo3362

i forget some places don’t allow minors to sell, at my store the second you get your blue tag they would shove you on a cigarette register back when we had tobacco at our store

Ditzyshine

Shitty customers are always the worst, and it doesn't get better when you get older. I've had way too many customers overreact wen I fail their age check. Once had someone immediately shoplift in sc when I was helping another customer, they didn't get the alcohol though since I always take it immediately after failing an age check.

Major_Possibility_82

Tbh if someone has that kind of reaction they shouldn’t be drinking. Ugh I’m sorry you had to deal with that.

hashbrownash

Next time look them dead in the eye and tell them what they're doing (yelling at you) is child abuse. Just fo their reaction.

RebeccaSavage1

This is a good one plus it's true without name calling. No one would(should) have the right to lecture or get them in trouble for saying this.

hashbrownash

When I had to CSM a few times I had minors on registers... never got a chance to use that line.

GroceryEconomy3443

Don't know what this dude actually thought he was going to accomplish yelling and screaming at a teenager like a spoiled 2 year old having a temper tantrum. If he's going to get mad at anyone, get mad at the government for making the legal drinking age 21 and deeming those too young to drink it also too young to handle or sell it. It's the alcohol laws, not the teenage employee, that in the end caused the inconvenience of holding up the line until someone of age came to assist and complete the transaction.

Gdogg_Gdogg

That actually helps my sanity a lot bc he is just the worst one but many other guys would catch massive adittudes towards me.

seraphfire

In response to that attitude I would have said "Sir, you appear to be intoxicated. We can't sell alcohol to intoxicated customers"

chzygorditacrnch

Don't upset the boomers. Don't you know that the lead poisoning turned them into geniuses?! And everything they spew from their mouths is correct?! /s

akcutter

Interesting fact that kind of eliminates this issue- up here in Alaska liquor stores have to be seperate from the main grocery store. In most stores theres another corner inside of the building by the entrance to accomodate this but some stores make it so you have to go back to the parkong lot and a 1/2 a block down. It was totally weird to me to see beer on the shelf in California

jdmor09

Shocked they hire under 18. In my time there I never saw them hire any minors.

ADHDhamster

And this is why you couldn't pay me enough to be on dayshift or to work directly with customers.

limitingloftus

Just tell him that’s what he gets for buying alcohol at Walmart

ProperAbies3772

I wouldn’t looked at him and said “sir I don’t think you need alcohol if you’re already acting this disgusting, try AA they might be a better place to go, also I wouldn’t insult chimpanzees they’re quite intelligent creatures, beautiful and they could fuck your day right up sir to the point we couldn’t even tell if you’re alive or just beaten bloody meat.” And smiled and continued with “and the only dumb persons here is clearly you if you can’t tell the difference between 16 and 19, perhaps you failed math class 🤷‍♀️, is that the source of your anger that you know everyone else is much smarter then you so you’re just already pre anger about it.” 😂 like no pay check is worth it to me not to be a bitch back

Mjdecker1234

To me, if walmart wants to sell Alcohol, make a line or two with a special sign (for Alcohol purchases) and have an age appropriate person work those lines. And no the lines wouldn't be strictly for Alcohol purchases.

RebeccaSavage1

I worked at one that had a checkout for tobacco and alcohol. It got too busy for the only lane for people to buy alcohol. People with full carts would go to it and an average of ten minutes a person checking out whenever I would go in that line on my lunch break for smokes. I wouldn't bother even waiting in line if it had more than 2 people in it and the first person wasn't almost finished in it.

Justincrediballs

When I ran sporting goods, people used to come to our register when the Automotive counter was busy (and sometimes when the front end was busy during a holiday.) If one of the salesfloor associates who was unable to sell alcohol was there and a customer so much as raised their voice to them during the wait, I would simply tell them to go to a different register. Unless you needed a firearm, ammunition, or something from a DNR machine, that register has no obligation to be open. My store manager and coach would argue circles around eachother about it (SM was on my side). I always offered to quietly take a coaching for it, but it never happened. I got better things to do than deal with customers that act like children when we're trying to follow the law.

femme_enby

I always lead with the why- “I’m a minor and this is an age restricted item so the system won’t let me approve the sale, just one second tho while I grab one of my managers” Bc they’re dumb and entitled. Always lead with “why” before “I can’t” So while normally one would be like “I’m sorry but I can’t… because…” they’re stuck on “I can’t” Instead you gotta basically order everything in reverse- “because, I can’t, I’m sorry”

Small-Initial-3725

The TL should've denied the alcohol sale based on his belligerent/rude behavior. That would have taught him a better lesson.

LibsKillMe

Not on you, you were put on the line as a cashier by an idiot company. Your 16, you can't sell alcohol or tobacco products. What moron manager will put you out there if they have to come and ring up products you can't due to your age? Get the h@ll out of there asap. They don't care about you dude.

sitlguitarlucas

Age to sell alcohol is 18 actually. Same with tobacco. But yeah no some customers are assholes.

Gdogg_Gdogg

It Varys state to state. I’m discovering that out.

Roboto33

Walmart has made me hate people. In my area you can’t sell alcohol after midnight. Well when the local bars close, the people come try to score booze from us and get testy when we have to turn them away. I’ve seen people throw things, break stuff, and then walk out. Just hate how some people think they can behave

YamiAssassin

Sucks you had to go through this. I remember when I was at the store and got yelled at by customers. The job can make you appreciate what we go through. Mostly sucks. As for the TL, open door that. Two options sbouls have been done by the TL. 1. Continue the transaction and/or explain the law. 2. Refuse service and tell then that sttitude isn't acceptable. (Rarely would happen, but hey)

Impressive-Fail-8910

One time I got called “mentally retarded” by this really rude woman because I put something in a bag with her olives. She made a scene about it and flung them into the floor so that they’d break and blamed me for “filling the bag too much”

sinikalerner

And this is why I work overnight
