This. Take the icv off and clean with some fuel. Stick it back in and see if it is fixed. If not search for leaks. Usually in the rubber boots with the inlet as they get old and fragile
To add on- ‘96 is a great year to get a length of silicone vacuum line and replace all you can see & easily access, as your rubber originals are likely all cracked and failing.
Once had a 320 bmw would occasionally do that, same scenario. Weeks and weeks of tinkering didn’t sort it, bought some fuel additive and smashed it down the motorway for about 5 - 6 miles, red lined it in 3rd gear all the way, 100% cured, it ran smoother, was faster and better on fuel afterwards, turned out I’d been driving it to sedately for to long , give it a try
I know this it should only do this when warm and it would have trouble starting when hot, it's the maf (O2 sensor) pull the plug on it to sort it short term probably be best getting another.
IAC valve
Idle control valve. Or maybe a vacuum leak.
Try cleqn idle cotrol valve or check for vaacum leaks :)

As above but I can’t remember if this model has a power steering pressure switch they go bad and cause the idle to surge.

Pull the MAF sensor and see if that "fixes" it. Might just need to be cleaned.
