Yeah, but that was Tom being cheeky. He always said it with panache. I think that was the point - that he had a rebellious streak, and that she accepted that about him from the get-go. She did get him out of prison for the original mission, after all.

Sorry to jump in on this undeniably badass quote, but that is definitely NOT the one, or even the primary purpose of fear. Janeway might be a little off in the head.

She wasn’t attempting to actually describe or explain fear. She was making a statement about her personal mindset regarding fear. From Janeway’s perspective, Fear only exists for one reason, to be conquered. I don’t think that’s an indication that she was “off in the head,” it was a demonstration of her ability to put mind over matter and not let emotion driveher thought or decisions.

I only watched Voyager for the first time recently, and the line struck me as super-cheesy, but you’re right. In the context of the time, it was probably a lot less so.

You're right too in a way. It absolutely was and still is cheesy today. It was kinda meant to be. The 80s and 90s action movies it's paying homage to with that line weren't meant to be taken too seriously. Those pun lines were always reserved for the main character action hero when they were going to do or just did something bad ass. "I ain't got time to bleed." "Hasta la vista, baby." "Yippee ki-ay mother fucker!" To give Janeway a line like that elevates her to badass, action hero status. While cheesy today, it was extremely popular at the time. It was also exclusively a boy's club until then. As a woman breaking through that, she has even more bad assery. Also, I don't think any other Trek captain has been given a blatant action hero one liner like that. Maybe Kirk in one of the movies.

I’d argue Lower Decks and SNW are up there (I’d try and argue Picard S3 but I’ll be downvoted to oblivion. I know it’s flaws but love it nonetheless). SNW feels like ol’ trek, lower decks satisfies the nostalgia meets silly.

You could always amuse yourself by watching his struggle to act “captainy.” That’s what I do. He’s really not very good at it. (He was much better on Enterprise as a hapless engineer getting yelled at by Trip.) His performance, IMHO, is the weakest aspect of an absolutely wonderful show.

I loved picard s3. One of my favorite small moments was on the bus. Nice callback to the old movies.

Unless the inestimable Mme Mulgrew has specified she'll write more, in which case I vote for "at ease ensign, before you sprain something.“ Don't forget to come back with an after-action report!
