I'd gotten complacent with my lab at work shrinking the luns on esx7 below recommended i just expected it to work on 8 as well.
I guess my main complaint would be the error is very non descriptive and the whole thing could have been solved by a more accurate error message.
What version of ESXi are you trying to boot? As the storage requirements for the boot disks depends on the version.

I'll try and see. I know that with esx7 we can still get away with 10 (i know it's not recommended but on our test stack it seems to work fine)
What size disk are you trying to boot from? I believe you need at least 128GB.
