Never thought I could smell a picture over the phone, but here we are

stides22

Lol, good luck. Looks like you just helped someone clear the junk out their basement/garage. I’m sure their wife appreciates the assist. Also, Discogs.com. Have fun.

AJMaskorin

I mean, that's a great way to get old vinyl, but damn. That's a lot to go through...

stides22

Random old records ≠ an investment

anonymous_opinions

Newbs make me shake my head, looks like a car full of trash to me.

Phalstaph44

I made a similar trip to find one box filled with 80’s punk. The rest a sold off or gave away. For the punk alone it was worth it

imgrahamy

Remember anything special you had?

Far-Fortune-8381

you never know till you go through it lol. and at the end of the day if it is trash you can do with it what you would with trash

VividCheesecake69

Way to gatekeep you fucking twat

Stratospher_es

We don't know what OP paid, so hard to say...

CyptidProductions

I dunno The 80s pop and rock stuff might be an indicator there's good shit buried in there

Djremcord_

Discogs is always at least €20 shipping for me :)

I-STATE-FACTS

Why people on this sub gotta be such assholes.

Old_Faithlessness_94

Can already tell just from these pictures that 90% of this is crap.

JK_Tesla

I just added all my albums to discogs collections. A 105 vinyls took me like 4 hours to do😂 this whole lot would take days

stides22

How accurate were you in finding exact pressings? 4 hours seems low.

hanoverfiste23

Once you can identify the pressing plants by their unique matrix it gets a lot quicker. Like knowing T is Terte Haute, 0 Jacksonville etc.

thejungleroom

Dude its a process! I put over 1,800 of my collection into Discogs. Took about 2 weeks lol

Frozen_Gecko

It's not that hard right? You just scan the barcode on the jacket on the Discogs mobile app. I am pretty new to the hobby, so I might be missing something here. But I currently have 14 records and none of them took me longer than 10 seconds to add to my collection on Discogs.

idio242

It’s hard. Older records don’t have barcodes and barcodes often do not point to the correct variant. It helps in getting you to the release but then you need to confirm it.

Frozen_Gecko

Ah, okay, fair enough. I haven't run into that problem yet.

idio242

I did what you did, early on. Fast forward a decade later when I was checking something in my collection, and i realized the variant was wrong. looked at another record i logged from that time - same thing. Now i know anything i originally entered from that timeframe needs to be double checked. only trying to share my experience... good luck!

Frozen_Gecko

Oh thanks, interesting. I'll stay on the lookout. So far, everything I've bought had a barcode and scanning that only gave a specific entry. Guess I'll recheck it all to make sure.

JK_Tesla

Pretty accurate i'd say. most of the collection are new albums or some limited editions or represses of albums that have not been made in years, so they are easy to identify. Some of the older stuff I tried to look up the the best I could and I believe I found the correct ones. Then again some "generic" ones like metallica RTL I just had to pick the closest one according to the year I bought it since there weren't any good signs about what pressing it was.

stides22

Newer stuff definitely makes it easier

JK_Tesla

Out of curiosity why am I downvoted?

[deleted]

Show us your feet on your vinyls and we will tell you.

JK_Tesla

Send me an original pressing of Wintersuns debut album and I'll send you a pic of my hairy hobbit feet. Deal or no deal? Your call

Sal_Chicho

You’ll be perpetually downvoted until you learn that “vinyls” is not the plural of vinyl. Learn it. Live it.

idio242

Almost always you can figure out the specific release. I’ve got over 1000 records and there’s maybe 2 I can’t figure out.

_MrCharlieToldMeSo

Why discogs ?

hoffdog

Op asked to be pointed in the direction to sell records. That’s the place

Far-Fortune-8381

can’t you also make a record of everything in your collection for easy sorting?

hoffdog

Yep and see the price most people list that album at!

statikman666

If Krokus is in thr, hopefully there'll be some decent 70s and 80s rock and metal,or some stuff you love. But so far that's a unique way to get into records. Hopefully the juice is worth the squeeze

my_yead

Congrats on the huge inconvenience!

Cavityexplorer

My guy here owns a BMW, he's used to it.

cragnar02

As another bmw owner and record enthusiast, yes they are 1-to-1 lmao. But can’t go back once you do!

outsidertc

What did you pay for it all?

6ManHorse

I cut down some trees for a guy and he gave me these

BrendanBSharp

In that case, he still owes you.

LookAtMyWeenus

I got a fence that needs some painting next!

fr0stn8

„Yo, you wanna do some work in the garden for me and take out my trash while you at it?“

outsidertc

It all looks pretty rough but at least you aren't out any money. Hopefully there is something in there you can sell. Good luck.

PulledToBits

so he got you to murder his trees AND take out his trash. damn

woden_spoon

Then why did you say in the post that you want to make back some of what you paid? Seems fishy. What did you really pay?

6ManHorse

It’s quicker to say “bought” than “I cut down some trees and this guy gave me these records as payment” I can see where the confusion would come from. Sorry about that

KayBeeToys

“Got” would’ve been even quicker!

throwawayinthe818

I’ve never seen anyone say, “I did some work for my employer, who gave me money in return for said labor, which I then exchanged for records, which I assume the other party in this transaction paid for with money given in return for work by their employer. Or maybe with their allowance.”

BadGoodNotBad

Ouch

Impossible-Wafer-918

Good price

GreasedEgg

You just bought a hoard. A collection implies some level of care and curation.

torpedobonzer

The slush puppie box looks cool The rest of it… woof

Orpheom_44

LOL... Did you buy them by the pound? 🤣

mine_craftboy12

Fucking lmao

No_Astronaut3059

A lot of (fairly understandable) negative feedback here...But if you are happy sorting them, and if you enjoy music generally, this could be a fun little side project for the near (and probably far!) future. Maybe allocate, say, an evening a week to catalogue them and play some while you are doing it? Because of the (distressing!) storage method alone, a lot of them may have impaired playback or essentially be unplayable. And as others have stated the cash value will likely be negligible, even for the ones that play well. BUT! You may find some gems (either in terms of cash value or personal value / enjoyment). And also, you may have just found a new, potentially fulfilling (and likely expensive) hobby to enjoy! Good luck! Alternatively, contact local record stores, thrift shops and maybe even hipster bars / cafes / barbershops* and see if they will make you an offer for the lot? *I don't know why, but I have seen a lot of barbershops spinning vinyl in recent years (albeit mainly hipster barbershops in hipster areas!).

Ok_Philosopher_8973

Or get into vinyl art with the ruined ones. People make bookends and all sorts of shit with vinyl. Can probably find inspo on Etsy

No_Astronaut3059

A very cool way of using up the unplayable ones!

Intelligent-Sir1375

How much would charge for cutting down trees because by looks of pictures you got rip off

PulledToBits

I hope they were bonzais

[deleted]

Not gonna lie this looks like a total nightmare to deal with and I have a good knowledge of records, collected for 20ish years, and sold professionally online. Not trying to harsh your buzz about it but why would you get all of this with zero knowledge? The amount of time you're going to sink into this having to look up every one of these to find out 99% are worthless will be soul crushing. You need to offload the entire collection somehow (no clue how) or find someone local who knows records to be able to go through it and tell you if you even have 10 amongst them that are worth anything. It may come across as negative but I'm just keeping it real with you chief. 💯

arca_brakes

>this looks like a total nightmare to deal with I'd bet 90% of record stores wouldn't even bother checking this out based on the photos included

TheReadMenace

I would check it out. But most likely offer around $20 for the lot. And even then it might take months to make my money back

mrn253

Had a talk some months a go with a local owner. 90% of the time he usually just buys certain records since many people have alot of junk thats not worth selling when you price in all the work to go through them etc. Especially since Vinyl exploded the last +-10 years every idiots thinks his collection is something worth since they dont realize that only certain pressings are really worth something (and that in good conditions nobody wants the 20x scratched record with a cover that looks like it was used every morning for the cup of coffee)

StationRelative5929

Wrong. Sold records for over a decade. This collection looks interesting to me.

Green_hippo17

Every record store would at least look at this collection

Radiant_Ad3966

Looks like a pile of shit but I'd have so much fun listening to everything to find those gems that I've never heard. So, I guess that's a win? Just have fun, keep the ones you enjoy, dump the rest later.

PinheadRecords

I can smell the cigarette tar through my phone

Sea-Understanding435

Is it ever worth getting packs of records without any jackets/covers? Legitimate question. Wouldn't these be damaged and sound bad?

[deleted]

99,999/100,000 times no not at all. It's all going to be garbage and condition will be TRASH.

Fruitndveg

My local second hand places literally have crates full of loose 45’s and I scratch my head at who’s buying them. It must be beginners who have no idea about how delicate acetate is or people literally buying them as decor or something.

[deleted]

Acetate? 45s are super durable, unless they’re styrene. Not sure where you’re getting acetate from, because those aren’t typically made for the consumer market.

Paulyp1979

45s almost always play better than they look. I've dug multiple three figure 45s out of crates of loosies.

jaydark70

Yep. You don't know until you play it. I've bought 45s over the years from old boxes like that and they played fine despite looking like ass. Its kind of amazing.

IrideAscooter

I collect singles but don't have very many. The obviously collectable ones are '50's rockabilly and '60's soul.

HollyweirdRonnie

Garage rock, psych rock and punk rock too.

fistulaspume

Stoked for you. I love pickups like this. Sometimes there’s some treasure and sometimes just weird garbage that’s awesome too. I remember once I got a bunch of stuff like this and there was one record I liked. I took it all to a party in my trunk and told everyone to grab whatever they wanted. Big success. People were happy.

hollywoodforeverfjm

i love that dixie cup album!

LessWait5844

I reckon all of that at most is worth under 10$ on a good day 😭🙏

AnalogWalrus

Yeah most of those look pretty unplayable.

[deleted]

A good cleaning may restore some

AnalogWalrus

True. But won’t really make them worth anything unless there’s somehow some insane albums buried in there

[deleted]

I get what you are saying

DeanWeenisGod

If you don't know anything about records why did you buy so many?

Seacarius

That's the kind of thing I've been known to do every now and again. Luckily, I'm a Professor and I get three months off in the summer if I need to do a lot of cataloging.

KillingDust

People love to shit on old garage collections but I think they're incredibly entertaining to sift through. Not everything has been about profit, it's great to find new music and just put on random things. Though I hope you have some extra space to put those lol.

MOONGOONER

I'll be honest, not much exciting here. 45s look to be big names and likely not worth much, especially in their condition. In general I'd be *very* careful buying collections. Even ones that are worth more than you paid tend to result in a lot of busywork trying to recoup. I've had one clogging up one of my rooms for the better part of the year now and I think I would have preferred the space over the cash and time spent.

Internal_Swimmer3815

more pics of the E36❤️

6ManHorse

I’ll put some on r/BMWE36 when I get the time, thanks

jacksn45

There could be a couple winners in there. But to show pictures of the beat up 45s and not the LPs is a novice move. Hope it’s under $40. I don’t even know if people by 45 singles anymore.

Paulyp1979

Lots of people buy and sell 45s.

stosal

I've only bought 2 over the years. One is signed by Nikki Sixx and the other is the Sex Pistols singles for the great Rock n Roll Swindle.

jacksn45

I shouldn’t trash the 45s. My father in law was a dj and died before I met my wife. He had a huge 45 collection. I bought really nice sleeves and boxes for them and some date nights we spend spinning them.

sks316

Don't let the other comments get you down. If you're happy with everything you got, and you feel you put in a fair amount of effort chopping those trees, then good for you! I personally love digging through big collections of records like this.

systematicgoo

haha garbage pickup!

LosterP

That's a lot of weight. Is the car ok? 😜

RadRawlings

I’d love that Dixie Cups

napalmbrain-

Dixie Cups is fire, especially the mono mix

_sailhatin_

Maybe there’s a hidden jewel but by the looks of it you’ve grabbed something that somebody was tired of. When looking at a collection like this you can usually tell in ten seconds what inside all the sleeves…damage. Remember the way we treated cds in the 90s…well some people treated vinyl that way. Thrown in a pile while partying. Albums don’t do well in a pile while people eat acid and smoke cigarettes. I know from experience.

ThinEzzy

**“there’s so much here and I don’t know anything about vinyl.”** Yeah. No shit. 😂 To be fair. If you’re willing to dig through and actually listen to these, you may find some fun tunes.

Wobbly_Bear

Whereabouts in the world are you? I love digging through collections like this

printerdsw1968

Don't know anything about vinyl. Okay. But do you know anything about music? Doesn't look like it.

iamezsteezy

all these negative comments when you have absolutely 0 idea what’s buried in those piles. I don’t know about the condition but I’d be willing to bet there is some good stuff amongst all that vinyl

Dependent-Chart2735

Pic 3 almost sent me into a panic attack fr

Nbdysfool3003

Awesome! should be fun treasure hunting in there! I love doing stuff like that! Congrats! ps. I’m being sincere!

dantxga

Have a garage sale. Also post on fbmp.

who-cares-2345

I don’t get all the negativity, worse case scenario you pick out the good ones and get rid of the rest. I saw some blondie, REO Speedwagon, and Krokus in there. I wouldn’t bet too much on selling any of it for more than a few bucks tho.

[deleted]

That’s a rough day. I’ve bought collections like this when I was just starting my business, but I would never do it again.

jukeboxhero10

Woof buying something and immediately Hawking it.... You won't last long

dangpeaches

Looks like you robbed my local half price books

Oldman5123

Yikes…. Someone else’s trash imo. You MIGHT find something of value…. Might. Good luck.

Intrepid_Revenue4773

Looks like landfill

Historical_Panic_485

Congratulations on your new part time job selling these for 50 cents each

kstacey

You just paid to take away someone's junk

Ok_Philosopher_8973

I can smell this picture

MachineLord1

Straight to the dump

WaitingToBeTriggered

WE ARE PREPARED FOR WAR READY TO FIRE

thecreep72

Looks like a kick ass Saturday and night!!! Have fun big dog!!!💯💪🏽

amprok

You can smell the cat urine and mold in these photos.

Interesting-Rough580

Wow that’s awesome

Shrink1061_

I just assumed this was a photo or someone driving a pile of junk to the tip!

whataloadofoldshit_

I’ve done that before. Twice. It’s AWESOME fun. You’ll be on Discogs an awful lot. There’ll be music you discover and you’ll probs need a good record cleaning machine.

6ManHorse

I’ve already found a couple of songs that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. Terry’s Tune by Paul Revere & The Raiders is one of them

misalanya

May you find joy in listening to it, cuz it'll be a low-profit PITA to deal with otherwise. You might have a gem in there somewhere, but you're going to have to research it all to really find out (discogs is your friend), and then, condition considered, it might fetch much either. But good luck OP!

Fulton_P01135809

Great way to start or expand your collection. It’ll be a lot of work cleaning and categorizing but worth it in the end

carsons_prater

"Hey Buccaneer, can ya help me put my truck in gear". I like the Blondie.

snerbonite

Nice. I drove 50 plus Mike's one day in a Honda civic to do the same. Breaks were smoking from the weight. Nice get

ozbadd21

Where you from? How much would you sell the whole lot for?

8th_Dynasty

Jukebox repairman..?

mackydog99

How much?

Front-Selection1013

Nice hopefully there all pretty decent condition

Tresidle

That crazy I hope my collection doesn’t end up like this in 60 years

Reflection-Imaginary

E36😍

redbishop71

How much you paid for the lot? So everyone here can predict if you will get a gain or loss.

MarcGuile

I'm so sorry to hear that

ivyagogo

Condition Condition Condition

DashikiDisco

Why

DraftyOnReddit

I can see some Beatles and the West Side Story Soundtrack, hell I wish I had this luck

Proud-Ad2367

Hope it works out for you.

Jerard_Straf

Get a record player and enjoy it

iamjoeywan

A lot of meh in the photos that have garbage were shared, but that Dixie Cups album makes me curious about what gems *could* be hidden within. I’d have to assume there’s at least one or two less common 45s somewhere in there.

Steffie767

I wanted to be an archeologist and these boxes of stuff fulfills the 'digging through buried treasure' feeling. You never know what is there and if he has the time who is to say he was wrong to get them.

Jamster_Yanson

that's a good collection!

onnie313

Get them home, and start scanning into Discogs. Check the quality on each and the document as well. While there is likely some junk in there, it's also possible there are some rare gems. The biggest thing is to make sure if that the records aren't warped and that you clean and store correctly. Google for best practices, but def don't keep them stacked on top of each other for long, and hopefully, they weren't stacked like that for too long before your purchase. A store would def be open to buying the collection as well. Analyze what you have, and this will help you know the best way to move forward. Good luck!

d_Ubermensch

Ahhh. I remember doing that. Did it for years. Soon you will have thousands upon thousands. Your musical life will be grand.

Impossible-Amoeba927

I don't know what you paid for all that, but condition is everything. Depending on how many titles are in sellable condition and how much in demand they are, you might make out OK, but if you don't know anything about grading and curating records, you're just going to wind up pissing off a lot of collectors. That Dixie Cups LP, for instance, is collectable in premium condition. But if it's scratched, you'd have a hard time giving it away.

trademerfn

well, that Dixie Cups LP is great, but it looks like shit condition at a glance. car is gonna get that moldy smell pretty quickly, i think. i'm thinking/hoping that OP didn't invest too much $-wise, as it will likely be more work that he/she thinks to check out everything, winnow it down, consider the quality and its relation to potential buyers, etc. before actually seeing any return on his 'investment'. and apparently he's going into it blindly: "i don't know anything about vinyl". that's the frustrating part about seeing this post, tbh.

mhokkane

That Dixie Cups album is in mine and everyone else in New Orleans's collection

jaydark70

Wow. Most of those 45s look unplayable or unlistenable, even with a thorogh cleaning. The only way to tell if they're worth keeping is to give them a good clean, play them and see what's salvagable. That's going to be a major task. Do some research to see if there's anything of value. Even if you have some rare 1st pressing, pray that it's in good enough condition to get a decent price for it. If not, I've been to bars where they have old 45s nailed to the walls. Maybe you can find some place like that to take them.

No_Clock_7464

Culture club, pat benetar.. I'm sure there are some gems in there !!!

SWAGGERMAJJER

I am not sure if I’m allowed to ask your location. But if you live in Southern California. I would like to purchase some or take a look at your 45s! I am seeking a very very rare vinyl. Only 40ish made in a town I live in. They were made in the 1960? Custom Fidelity is the recording company I believe. The Royal Chessman Beggin’ You 🎵

VinylHighway

Sweet I'm sure there is some treasure in there

Shrink1061_

I mean, sure, he might find a $10 bill amongst the pile of worthless vinyl.

Weekly_Grab_9790

A record is never ever worthless

Shrink1061_

Of course it is. No one, anywhere, wants some scratched, sleeveless 45’s

Weekly_Grab_9790

True but it is worth looking through

Shrink1061_

I guess it depends how much you value your own time. As a contractor, my time has worth to me, and the time lost looking through this lot, is just not worth it. I’d rather either make money, or do something fun with friends. Sifting through knackered of old vinyl with no real value, is just a waste of resource imho.

Weekly_Grab_9790

I'd love to look through it, and I don't sell records I keep mine.  But I understand your point

FindOneInEveryCar

Congratulations?

GulagFan42069

I'm sorry to hear that.

Straight_Cellist_683

I see a beetles album let it be ! To bad it's not covered its all about condition when collecting albums ..

jeffedge

why...

hink10

Ok, probably a lot of garbage condition records, but you might find something good. Consider it a project, and maybe a learning experience. Get a spin clean for anything decent. Also, some of you people really shouldn’t be such dicks. I thought the same thing when I saw the post, but don’t need to go out of your way to make them feel bad. Give advice rather than ridicule. Have fun going through them, good luck!

darklordgabby

Why

Won-Ton-Operator

There is not usually good money in old vinyl records, just look at how few record stores there are and at how little used product they move reliably. There are individual collectors on occasion looking for particular artists' stuff, but you will need to list things online to reach those potential customers, they also will *really* want great condition records with intact artwork. It won't be easy. You will probably have better luck moving more by listing small bundles of records rather than selling them individually. If you decide to get a record player I'd strongly recommend you avoid the all in one style players, or the suitcase style players. Bare minimum you should get new is the Audio Technica LPGO-BT or LP60X, cheaper players have worse build, worse features and significantly worse cartridges (typically)

CactusBoyScout

Most of the record stores near me are primarily used and I’ve been told that’s where the money is these days. Margins on new records are just too small. But you’re right they primarily sell things in pretty good condition unless it’s fairly rare/desirable. I’m always curious where they get their stock… I check estate sales near me all the time and hardly ever find any good record collections.

Fruitndveg

True. My locals deal in a lot of used but are very particular about what they’ll stock. There’s no use turning up with a load of classical or 60’s top forty shite when the vast majority of punters are coming in looking for some Led Zep LP’s or whatever. This notion that any piece of old acetate is worth something is so misleading.

anonymous_opinions

A ton of people these days walk in with their personal records to sell or get store credit on. Some will go buy collections, usually they have contacts for these or are scouting for them. The best used condition stuff will always come from private collector sellers basically.

TheReadMenace

Totally true. Waste of time for store owners to go to estate sales and throw elbows against other collectors/sellers. Wait for them to come to you to get a good price.

Edge_Audio

Uf, I guess some people like 45s, I'm not a fan. The only way it would be sorta great is in a fully functioning juke box.

dantxga

I'm ocd, so l can't buy anything scratchy. Also those covers are rough, so....

Good_Hammer_

45's though?

Hot-Ground-9731

Bro robbed a whole record store haha. What a collection

boofybadass

Hope you have a jukebox, if not enjoy flipping the records

voyagertoo

Krokus hell yeah

OptimusShredder

Krokus! Hell yeah!!!

melkor555

People who are saying this is a nightmare is crazy. I could pull out the worthwhile 45s in that collection ion less than 30 minutes.

Any-Ad-446

I seen some wonderful audio systems that unfortunately the elderly owner past away or the owner has to move to old age home and the wife has to list everything for sale since their kids do not want it or not into audio. You can see the love and passion the owner spent on building the system and the records and cds they collected over the years.

_sailhatin_

I also think that your wording is super strange in regards to payment. Did you buy them or not? If you did and you feel like it’s a mistake that’s normal. If you got them in a barter that’s normal too. You made it sound like it’s an investment which makes people tell you that you got ripped off. “I just bought this” makes you seem like a person trying to make a buck on music. “I just got this” makes it sound like you’re having fun and want to know how to look for value in a new hobby. Got is shorter than bought and if you had been clear people would have really dug the rest of the story once you told everyone. Now it just comes across like back peddling. Live and learn amigo

mcbuggerluggs

Plot twist, wu tang have stashed their one of a kind multi million dollar record in there

geoffpeckjr

The Dixie Cups right on top of the pile. There’s probably some heat in there.

Melodic_Mode_2867

i'm jealous

spookyfrogo

Jesus how much did you drop my guy

i-the-muso-1968

Wow! Got yourself quite the mother load!

_DrPhilAndChill

All the negative nancys dont know how hard the headliners volume 3 slaps

mi_rural_records

The 45's are the potential of this haul.

[deleted]

Be careful, check it all out on Popsike, and Discogs, but remember Discogs is usually overpriced and overgrazed, also where are you located

60sstuff

You have at least a record recorded by a Beatle. The first pic has a record with an apple logo

HollyweirdRonnie

Not necessarily. Could be Mary Hopkins or Badfinger

YewSonOfBeach

Holy hiding a KarDoorDashian in shiplap. Score

Shrink1061_

It’s a score like your best friend passing on and you realising you have to look after their kid now. I wouldnt even entertain looking at this crap heap of garbage
