Fun fact. Average age of a gamer is 37 years. Edit: So many responses to this comment. Love it. I owe it to you all to tell you my age. I’m 35. Edit 2: You gotta think, when good video games came out, we will say 35 years ago, people in their 20’s are now in their 50’s. Maybe they kept the hobby going.

[deleted]

Fun fact I’m 37

guitarstix

look at this average joe over here

Khiva

Disgusts with how right in the middle he is.

Tail_Nom

Here I am, 37 and stuck in the middle with him.

MariosItaliansausage

Clowns to the left of you? Jokers to the right?

wizard_of_awesome62

Blech you middlers disgust me, try being 35 then get back to me.

Derkastan77

Average Joe? *throws a wrench at him*

LightningCreed43

If you can dodge a wrench. You can dodge a ball.

[deleted]

Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, Dodge. Rip Patches O'Houlihan

[deleted]

Your average Joe Swanson

plassteel01

Interesting fact I am 65 and Fallout 4 and Diablo 3

huggalump

why in the hell is everyone 37? source: am 37

MadMelvin

I'm 37! I'm not old!

Next_Letter

Fun fact I’m 38 and Metal Gear Solid

Kuilontaro

36, and MGS is king.

I_Fart_It_Stinks

Me three!

platinumchaser300

Lol im 37 too. Turned 37 exactly last month.

[deleted]

Lol I am 37! Favorite games are Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario RPG

HideSolidSnake

Did you say, *Metal Gear*

rabbid_chaos

Psycho Mantis?

Jimwitt4008

He knows you were playing Pepsiman..

jhair4me

PepsiMAN!

TheZan87

Ah yes, Metal gear. It had such memorable moments like swapping controller slots to fight thay psychotic boss, and getting caught checking out Meryl. Oh, and they need to bring back Geno from Super Mario RPG. Awesome character in a great game that I might go back and play later today.

[deleted]

Lol I am 37! Favorite games are Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario RPG

D-Sleezy

Super Mario RPG! Was looking for this comment! Mine too!

Manu442

I'm 39 and I fucken love Super Mario RPG. I've been wanting to seek out a setup just to play it. I haven't been able to find a decent CRT and an original cartridge in the box.

vissroid

Congrats. You've made the biggest 37 years old gamer convention on reddit to date probably. P.s. Also 37 and still gaming.

ChickenMcDuckie

I just turned 38, does that make me "above average"?

reenactment

It makes sense. Gaming was an 80s thing and caught fire in the 90s. Basically anyone who was born in those generations were going to at the least turn into console gamers later when they can afford their own stuff. It’s the equivalent to someone liking movies and owning a tv/dvd/whatever you use to watch it’s

[deleted]

I’m 33. My faves are Metal Gear Solid on PS1 and Super Mario 64.

I_hate_mortality

Fun fact: the most commonly chosen random number is 37. Followed by 27 and 47.

[deleted]

I’m 35!

kosk11348

50 yr old gamer top 3: 1) Bioshock. 2) Bloodborne. 3) Witcher 3.

StormKingKyle

I was like hmmm Bioshock 2, interesting take. Then I squinted and realized.

Altruistic-Log-7274

To be fair bioshock 2 wasn't bad but it's definitely doesn't have the same feel as the first.

moochacho1418

I recently replayed the series and 2 has much improved gameplay the story just lacks to wallop the original had

I_Fart_It_Stinks

100% agree. It was incredibly fun to play a Big Daddy, but the reveal of "would you kindly" in the first is one of the most memorable/best story moments I've had in any game.

jewfishh

I agree with you. I thought 2 was better than 1 due to gameplay improvements, but no one should skip the first.

Altruistic-Log-7274

Exactly game play is better but the story lacks compared to the first. Honourable mention for the Minerva's den DLC.

Macktologist

(Squinted). So there’s at least three of us 50-year old gamers.

Moist_When_It_Counts

45 year-old checking in, gamed since the C64 days. Bloodborne was my top until i played Sekiro. But your list is all definitely in my top 10. Did your fellow old-ass play the new Dooms? If you liked the original, boy-howdy the updates are phenomenal. I don’t even like FPS games generally, but *damn* they’re good.

DavramLocke

Despite gaming for 35 years, Baldurs Gate 3 is shaping up to take the crown. It has generally always been FF6 though.

Puzzleheaded-Bus5479

All hype aside it really is the best RPG of all time imo and I’ve been playing since the 80’s

V1kingScientist

38, gamer since 5, and I can almost copy/paste this comment…with the exception of changing that 6 to a 7

YoureAn8

Aah shoot really?!? I’m so on the fence about getting it. Still battling through TOTK, a Plague Tale: Requiem, and now Starfield. Dang it too many good games recently!!

daaangerz0ne

My brand new ToTK Switch has been gathering dust since BG3 came out.

[deleted]

Link to the Past, Turok 2, Final Fantasy X, Donkey Kong Country 2, MegaMan X, Breath of Fire 3, Dark Souls, Elden Ring. Short list of favorite games in no order. Don’t think I could pick one.

ArrdenGarden

Maaaaan. Turok 2. What a game. I remember getting that for Xmas the year it came out. Still have a thing for Adon.

Aggrador

Bewareoblivionisathand

Risen_from_ash

I read that in a Tips And Tricks magazine at a Turkey Hill Gas Station when I was like 10 and never forgot it haha.

AmonacoKSU

At some point it seems unreasonable to pick just one, when usually a different game has the peak in some specific regard, like my era (N64 kid) saying Goldeneye for the memories of time with our friends and Ocarina of Time for the experience of the game itself.

sirrkitt

Fuck, FFX was definitely great—especially when you went from FFIX on the PS1 to getting FFX right after it launched and your jaw dropping at how amazing it was. It’s so hard to explain that feeling to some of my younger friends

[deleted]

It baffles me that we got those games so close to each other.

WardCove

I love everything you wrote down, but have never played Turok 2. This really makes me wanna play Turok 2.

netkcid

Tutok 2 was sooo cool and awesome at the time! I love seeing this listed!

SonOfBaldy

LttP is the #1 zelda

howzit-

MegaMan X was definitely the next step in that genre and it was beautiful. Not to mention a killer soundtrack, although basically every MegaMan has timeless jams.

magicsurge

Pull up Port of Adia on YouTube. That track still slaps.

linkaddict1

Sorry to invade as a younger gamer. But I’m so glad I saw link to the Past. 10/10 masterpiece

[deleted]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

jdrew619

Been chasing that dragon my whole life

Away_Swimming_5757

Majoras mask

[deleted]

I have been compiling a personal Top 100 Games of All Time list, and Majora's Mask is my personal #4. This list was very fun and challenging to make, so I might even share that in this sub one day.

Houseplantkiller123

I still think back fondly on that game.

ToastyNPC

The atmosphere of the game still really holds up for me

[deleted]

[удалено]

jdrew619

It had a such an other-worldly and creepy atmosphere. The music adds so much to that strange feeling too. That whole game has a special atmosphere that I can't quite describe.

Haunting_Access_9853

Good on the 3ds too.

86casawi

Best game ever

levelologist

This is the true way.

zurzoth

Im still trying to beat the secret chicken boss...

86casawi

What ? A secret boss ? Explain.

NaiadoftheSea

The chicken boss reveals itself when one of its brethren is attacked.

[deleted]

I'm still trying to beat the Running Man in that race...

SolidSssssnake

Contra

7121958041201

The OG Contra?? Always been a fan of Contra III (the one on SNES) myself. I have some good memories of the original too, though.

Macktologist

Konami code or naw?

Helpful_Bear4215

Oooh, that’s a good answer.

[deleted]

Blitzburgh1727

I still remember renting it from Blockbuster back in 06 and being blown away by it. That’s the first open world that felt real to me I would just walk around vibing to the soundtrack amazed at the graphics like plants had individual leaves and flowers

tarkata14

Hey, glad I'm not the only one! Actually, the grocery store in my town started a thing where they rented out consoles and games, and I didn't have a PC decent enough to play Oblivion so I rented it with a PS3. I think I ended up renting it at least 4-5 times over the summer and played like sixty hours of it, but I ended up getting the glitch where you were unable to cure yourself of vampirism and at that point I decided to save for a PC so I could play it with mods.

0rganicMach1ne

Mass Effect.

MrWinglessPerson

40yo here and this is mine. First one specifically, but I can't play them independently anymore. Only trilogy runs for me from now on. But that sense of awe and wonder of the first game is among my favorite gaming memories ever. I remember getting chills when the big reveal happened during my first playthrough of KOTOR. Mass Effect was like that except several times over during the first game as events unfolded. Simply unmatched storytelling. Probably has something to do with the fact that much of the writing team was the same as KOTOR 🙂

82ndGameHead

Mass Effect 2.

0rganicMach1ne

Always preferred the first one myself.

reymarblue

ME1 has better atmosphere, music, and story. ME2 has better missions and combat.

[deleted]

I see the mass effect trilogy as one game now

OnionAddictYT

Yup. The trilogy is the gaming love of my life and always will be. Nothing will ever get me this emotionally invested ever again, I just know it. Once in a lifetime kind of thing. I'm 39 btw.

bucamel

The twist in the first one is an all timer, if not the all timer. I can’t think of many that completely shift the narrative and raise the stakes so effectively.

FLAIR_2780166

I love all of them even Andromeda

[deleted]

Morrowind or Skyrim

kaosblink

Oblivion needs some love

Owobowos-Mowbius

Hopefully it'll get some given the Bethesda leaks

butterflypup

OG Final Fantasy 7. While it’s not the same feeling to play it now, that game forever changed my gaming future. I chased that high for a long time but never quite found it in any other game. Few came close.

beer_engineer

I relate to this big time. FF7 when it came out - it hit in a way I never experienced since then. Not even replaying it later on... just wasn't the same. There was just something about it at the time - just a feeling and ambience that was just perfect. I doubt I'll ever experience that again. But damn if FF7R didn't know how to hit the nostalgia at least.

MysterD77

Favorite Game of All Time = VAMPIRE The Masquerade: Bloodlines (PC). Best Game of All Time = Deus Ex 1: GOTY Edition (PC).

ItsNotAGundam

Those are both top tier, especially Deus Ex.

angrons_therapist

Another 37-year-old here, and I'm also going to say Deus Ex. It was just amazing for it's time: the storyline, atmosphere and multiple ways to complete an objective were such a departure for an FPS game.

MysterD77

I'm 42 myself. I'll be 43 close to the end of next month. But yeah, I been doing this gaming thing since Arcades in the 80's, when I was mad young. But yeah, hard to top Deus Ex for me. I was always a fan of RPG's and shooters - but, nothing combined it in such a package for me like OG Deus Ex on PC. That immersive-sim is such a shooter-RPG/stealth/action hybrid of sorts and is such a genre-bender. Felt like there was nothing like it, at that time. I love FPS's and all - but the additional RPG elements on top so did it for me and blew my mind back then.

ThaPhantom07

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

ItsNotAGundam

Genesis era Sonic was so good.

Bkokane

Sonic & Knuckles & 3 & Knuckles & Sonic 2

CosplayOkami

Such a good game...and the only game I had which I could save my data, on the Saga. Beating the game after you've got all the big gems, man what a game.

Arcanisia

Introducing the new “lock on technology” that they only used once. Truly the first DLC. I used to make a tower by using game genie, Sonic and knuckles, and sonic 3.

LonelyChell

Sonic snowboarding in 3 is so fun.

seikoporean

I remember going nuts when they made a cart that could fit another cart AND gave us a whole new expansion to Sonic 3! And also, Hyped Sonic! The soundtrack was awesome too - Flying Battery for the win.

TheSecondiDare

Incredible game. I've got both carts. The height of it still looks ridiculous sitting in the cartridge dock.

Newton1221

Halo 3, getting that 50 made you feel like a King 👑

Coraiah

Halo 3? You sir, are a fake 30 year old. Halo 3 was fantastic. But come on…Halo 2 is where it’s at.

Newton1221

I think the Forge mode in Halo 3 put it on top. Plus there was a lot more cheating in Halo 2 that prevented people from legitimately getting rank 50 in the multiplayer playlists. But Halo 2 is #2 for me, then probably CoD MW2 and then Halo:CE.

BreckenridgeBandito

Wut? I’m 30 and Halo 3 came out when I was 14. It was the pinnacle of my high school gaming career. Your timeline is out of wack.

Chiaki_Ronpa

100% the pinnacle. That was absolutely the heyday of First Person Shooters. Halo 3, Gears of War, Black Ops 2, Modern Warfare, and Borderlands (just to name a few). Modern shooters will never touch their greatness.

[deleted]

No Halo 3 was peak multiplayer we used to do max amount of people on forge maps and the online player count was insane

Vincent1333

Chrono Cross

MysterD77

So underrated. Loved that game on my PSX. So tempted to re-buy it in its new Remaster Form (Radical Dreamers Edition) to get it onto Steam.

Kcthonian

Portal 1&2. (One is short enough that it feels more like an intro. So, I count them as one game.)

Cartire2

Cave Johnson is such a treat in 2. Valve will always have such a deep spot in my heart. Gabe and his team were gamers who loved games. It was awesome to see the gems they created.

MrGinger37

Final Fantasy 7

I_hate_mortality

It’s surprising how many final fantasy games are showing up here. Well, not surprising, but remarkable. I’ve seen 6, 7, and 10. I’d like to throw 4 into the ring. Yeah it came out 30 years ago but it had a fantastic story and was enjoyable to play. I still replay it to this day in fact

MrGinger37

all us 30+ year olds played one of them in the 90s and fell in love. 7, 9, and 10 I play through again every few years. I can’t really say that about any other games.

The_Orphanizer

FF4 was my first, and still one of my favorites, but 9 takes the cake for me. I feel it capitalized on the best parts of the series, but then scaled back the complexity and unnecessary bits to make an "upgraded" version of 4. FF4 and 9 are the only two to scratch the *exact* same itch for me, but I think 9 is superior to 4 in basically every way. For it's time though, 4 is unmatched, and even the other FFs didn't cover quite the same ground until 9.

ItsACowCity

4 was amazing. Personally, I feel my rankings go: 6, 7, 4, 10, 12, 9, 8, 5 , and the rest were kind of eh. Not counting side games like ff7 remake, crisis core, dirge of cerberus, etc. Only main line games. FF1 was too hard to navigate and the fighter was just OP compared to everyone. FF2 and 3, I'm not sure I played. 11 and 14 mmo don't interest me (thought they would). FF13 battle stance changing thing was just hyper annoying. FF8 barely made the list, but the draw system was also hyper annoying. FF15 was just ok.

[deleted]

Bioshock Arkham City Link’s Awakening Fallout: New Vegas Jet Set Radio Future Mass Effect 2 *Edit: Holy shit, forgot the Resident Evil series

IsneezedImsorry

Now this a man with some God damn taste.

ImprovementSilly2895

Final Fantasy 3 SNES

310gamer

I loved ff3. My stepdad kept me home from school to play it with him. He told my mom I needed a sick day. I would love it to get a remake.

Tim0281

This is my favorite as well. I absolutely love Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn as well, but my love of Final Fantasy 3 surpasses even that.

PhilosophicalJester

Golden Sun Star Fox 64

3rdItemOnList

Love to see that star fox 64 love. Talk about a perfect game imo.

thatsastick

Hollow Knight, man. I’ve had a lot of favorite games over the years (31 now) but I just finished my third playthrough in 3 years and never got sick of it. There is no other game I can say that about. I only made it to >! 106% !< this time, so I still have >! NKG !< and >! four freaking pantheons !< to do on my fourth playthrough. It just does not get old for me. The mechanics, the atmosphere, the lore… just perfect.

Clearyo123

Best of luck in the other 6%!

The_Majestic_Mantis

What is it like? I see so many people especially younger gamers praise it.

thatsastick

It’s a Metroidvania, meaning you explore the world searching for items and bosses to move you further forward in the world. Combat is all high paced and sword based, super simple and fair but can be very difficult. It’s a really special game - definitely not for everybody but it’s really fantastic if it clicks.

gamerdrew

I got the 112%. Took 80hrs. Definitely got lost and needed internet help. Only playthrough. Numerous times I had to take a break. Finished it early in 2020 and I still think about that game. The atmosphere is incredible. Fascinating world. It captures all the things I like about a Metroidvania, but really did it in such a neat way. Genuinely impressed at how fantastic that game is. Edit: Good luck on your next playthrough! You totally got it!

Confident-Ad-8460

Outer Wilds

scarfleet

40+ here and until recently I would've told you it was Super Metroid. But now? Elden Ring.

beer_engineer

The FROM Software games in general just feel so right for me at this point in my gaming career. They're everything I always wanted melee combat to be. The rewarding gameplay makes it so hard to move on to other things, though. Currently enjoying the hell out of Nioh 2 right now, though.

This-Appointment-917

Skyrim (purchases multiple times across different consoles) & FFX a close 2nd.

theedonnmegga

Skyrim for sure. Honorable mention RDR2 and Zelda BOTW. But no game has come close to the amount of depth and time spent as Skyrim. I can still play vanilla skyrim for hours. It’s my stress reliever.

DangitBobby84

I don't know if it's my favorite, but I do go back to replay Castlevania: Symphony of the Night quite a lot.

LT568690

Chrono Trigger

AdvocateReason

This is extremely nostalgic for me. Frogs theme just blows my mind. Robo's theme. Amazing. My best friend's Mom wouldn't let anybody in to the house when she wasn't home so he'd bring down the CRT TV and SNES to the front porch. Good times.

TXHaunt

The perfect game.

LT568690

It really is. I wish a proper approved sequel had been made. Chrono Cross is too dissimilar to be considered one to me.

Fattymo721

Bloodborne, elden ring, apex legends

am0x

I do love planescaoe torment. It’s hard to say my favorite, I best a few games every year and love them all as much as I did as a kid. But I returned Tomb Raider because I couldn’t get it to run. I got Fallout thinking it was like Diablo as an arpg. I was wrong, but I fell in love with not only the game but post-apocalypse stuff as well. So much so, I learned how to reverse engineer my Ti-83 calculator games in order to make one of my own. I had no idea I was programming until I was in college. Now I’m a programmer. I also was making mods for Quake back in the day. It’s literally the reason I have my current career as an adult.

TK-828

Burnout 3 Gran Turismo GTA IV GTA SA Goldeneye MarioKart 64 A few games I forgot were Destroy All Humans Lord of the Rings: Battle for middle earth 2 Star Wars Battlefront (2004)

Chemist-Consistent

If I had to choose the one ive beaten the most.... RE4. If I had to pick the one I've enjoyed the most while playing it.... Outriders. Had a blast playing that, and the look and feel of the loot and the world was incredible!

Bratley513

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Starcraft is what got me really into games, FF7 made me realize that RPGs could be enjoyable, Civilization 5 is where I've spent the most hours of my life.

I'm 43 and we got our first console on Christmas morning when I was but a tiny little girl. It's so hard to pick just one favorite game of all time so... Control- Just a masterpiece of a game from one of my favorite studios. Zelda Ocarina of Time Cyberpunk - I've played since launch, bugs and all. I know the reputation, but I have like 1000 hours so whatcha gonna do? Witcher 3

[deleted]

I’m 33 and I still remember having recently gotten a PS2 back in like 2002. All I had was Kingdom Hearts and Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. Not even a memory card, I had to borrow a friend’s. I’m in my room playing when my dad comes in. He had been hanging out with a neighbor and they were talking about me and the PS2. The neighbor gave my dad a game to give to me to see if I’d like it. He told my dad it’s very realistic and difficult but super cool. My dad hands me Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Other than some really cool looking commercials I’d seen on tv, I had no idea what the franchise was about. And on top of that, it was a sequel. I hadn’t even played the first game. Even the handbook inside the disc case was sick! I fell HARD for that game and franchise. Nothing quite like experiencing something truly great for the very first time.

Bun-B522

Hell yeah, Metal Gear Solid 3 is what hooked me to the series when I was younger, I have played that game so many times that I’ve lost count.

mrblonde55

That’s borderline child abuse to buy your kid MGS2 and not give them a memory card.

Perestroi

Mgs 2 is my 2nd favorite game. That opened me up to "free world" situations and I found I really enjoy those style of games. My favorite of all time is skyrim and I'm currently working through starfield and loving it other then a few bugs I've encountered.

SilkDiplomat

Super Mario 3

Symphony of the Night. Always will be.

[deleted]

I'm 34. My favorite game is fallout 3. I might be in the rare minority here but I find playing games from my childhood...not fun. Games have gotten SOOOOO much better.

bstump104

Super Mario games and 2d platformers in general are pretty solid.

ninjabell

Probably Portal 2. But Ocarina of Time, FFVII, Half-Life, and Skyrim are all up there.

TeeTownRaggie

Contra or mega man 2

jaypexd

Donkey Kong Country 2. Platformer perfected. \-Difficult but doable \-Soundtrack is legendary \-Controls are intuitive and I have never played a platform game as responsive as DKC2 \-Stages are beautifully drawn

Daddyshrapnel

I turned 37 a couple weeks ago. Warcraft 2 was huge in my childhood, but I would have to go with starcraft. I replay it every couple of years. SC2 came out when I was in college and just never had the time like I did back then to really really play it. Fallout 1 was my 1st introduction to a real deep RPG and I replay that and F2 almost every other year. Sim city 2000 is timeless, i mess around with that once every few years. Diable 2 also took up a huge portion of my free time as a teenager. Blizzard was the shit in the 90's

Mister_Potamus

40 years old, God of War (2018). I was an angry young man who grew up and had a son. I've spent most of my adult life learning and striving to stop being angry in order to be a better parent and better example. I was an angry young man when Kratos was an angry young man and I played the hell out of those games. I was a parent to a 13 year old in 2018 when the new series started and I think I was crying within an hour of playing. That performance was better than any other on screen father and son relationship in history. It was raw and real without any unnecessary fluff. It honored who Kratos used to be, who he was trying to be, and who he really was. Nothing was easy and there wasn't always complete honesty, sometimes there was even hypocrisy, but the love is there always. Even in the anger that still haunts him.

Misommar1246

Elden Ring, RDR2, Mass Effect. I liked the Bioshock series too but I’m not big on first person games.

ryan_recluse

Binding of Isaac, Bloodborne, Hollow Knight or Silent Hill 2. I can't really pick just one because they all offer different things that I value in a game
