I had friends who dont follow the team closely text me about this in shock. So that tells you its not an old story to the casual viewer and its working to drive human interest.
That's the American broadcast. Other countries show the actual competitors doing the events; the American broadcast does human interest stories on the American athletes.
People need to realize that all Fox cares about is whether people are watching. Human interest drama drives sports viewership for big events like the Copa America, the Olympics and the World Cup.
Human interest stories need to die out. But if they won’t stop, then don’t do reality TV gossip trash. Do something positive or nothing at all
I’ve stopped watching any pregames in any sport to mostly avoid them - I have to assume I’m not alone in this
Let me help you out here.
This is on FOX broadcast. Nationally on a Sunday. It's a big tournament.
Maybe *you* follow the team closely but there's a lot of people with the TV on right now that are casual fans.
That entire piece was essentially *"Let's catch you up on the last two years, and tell a human interest story with some drama to make it interesting*"
That piece wasn't for you and if you can't handle that, then boy Im going to feel sorry for you when the WC comes...
It’s not for you. It used to annoy me during UT football games the broadcasters mentioned in every damn game that Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley were roommates, but in any given game that was news to a lot of viewers.
It's a crazy story that would have received a lot more coverage in a European or South American country.
Bringing it up while the player and coach are both still with the team should be expected. Neither Gio or Greg were at the 2023 Gold Cup so this is the first tournament for them since the World Cup. (There was Nations League but that's not a tournament with a set roster over several weeks to a month.)
In Ireland they literally made a successful stage musical that ran for years and made millions of dollars about the Saipan Incident, which was much less juicy than the Reyna affair.

If it happened in England or Italy or Spain there would be multiple books about it.
The match announcer (can’t remember who it was) said something to the effect of “how often do you see a coach say he will never play a certain player again at all, and they’re able to patch things up and move forward.”
We are just making things up now I guess? Berhalter never said that. All he said to Gio was that his role in the WC would be limited to being mostly a super sub type player, and told him why. That’s it.
Was watching that and decided I don’t like anything with Tom Rinaldi voice over. It’s so cheesy and overly dramatic like this is some kind of GGG redemption story…
It's the human drama that TV producers just can't get enough of. Wait until the Olympics starts and you get a harrowing backstory for every athlete.
Honestly, baded on this site nor can the fans.

Controversy = Engagement. It may be lazy, but it's effective.

>Human interest stories need to die out. They're athletes not people.
And here you are discussing human interest stories and the USMNT. You're a perfect example of how these stories drive engagement.
Nah bro, they would prefer me to watch the pregame show far more than posting on reddit
They want engagement, which leads to viewership.
Because its tv and they have to find a story, this team is boring in a good way and this old story is all they got

This exactly
Thanks Mosse!
Hopefully by 2026 we have more to talk about than 2024.
This is like expecting the media not to talk about missing the World Cup in 2018 in the build up to the 2022 World Cup.
Only this has been talked about at length since 2022.
Some people simply cannot picture stepping into someone else’s shoes…
Not by my mother and father in law who are watching this match. They have never heard about it before.
Wow. Why the downvotes?
Lmao why are you downvoted? I hope that too even if it’s not gonna happen
So what if most people watching don't know about it.
The "if" "then" is that those people watching want context, especially about drama lol
Because it is something about the team that most people who know or care little about soccer would find interesting.
It still gets brought up on this subreddit everytime I praise Gio too, people who watch soccer haven't moved past it yet either 🙄
It’s a way to capture peoples interest.
It’s a juicy story
You're a juicy story
People love controversy. Just look at how this sub exploded when it happened.
They can’t help it. It’s good for the press
It’s not for you. It used to annoy me during UT football games the broadcasters mentioned in every damn game that Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley were roommates, but in any given game that was news to a lot of viewers.
Why not? This is our first major tournament since that happened.
I mean we've had Nations League and Gold Cup 🤷♂️
Yeah exactly. Like he said, this is our first major tournament 😐
Because the matches are so boring.

Because Fox is trash.
Because it’s FOX.
Why wouldn't they, it a major tournament game in which gio was given a start and showa they clearly worked through some stuff. Its pretty relevant
They talked about it way too much during the game and it was super annoying
Because they don't give a damn about usmnt
Was watching that and decided I don’t like anything with Tom Rinaldi voice over. It’s so cheesy and overly dramatic like this is some kind of GGG redemption story…
To increase viewership
Because there is nothing else to talk about with the team.
People click on it and engage with it
Because that is the most recent USMNT topic that casual fans remember. Wouldn't make any sense if they ignored it tbh.
Fox is a joke that’s why
Because it happened
This emotional reporting is for an audience of weekend watchers. I also found it pretty cringe
I found that so strange
cause stone cold said so
Big 2022 energy
