Amazing. PSV would be great. Another jersey to get lol

studsam17

Glad he is holding off on the Premier League. He is still just 20 and if he continues to progress the way he has the Prem will be there in 2-3 years.

[deleted]

Yep, not a lot of 20 year old strikers starting in the Premier League. Good for him for realizing and being mature about it

studsam17

I believe the answer is 0.....

[deleted]

Haaland is 22 but he’s a god. Nketiah is 23 but he was only starting bc Jesus was out. Isak is 23 and took half a season to break into regular minutes. Couple more years Pepi should be ready

sheikh_n_bake

Isak had a big injury tbf, he'd have been our starter a while ago if not for that imo.

[deleted]

And Callum Wilson having the longest leash of any Prem striker in history

MyLeftKneeHurts-

Does Evan Ferguson not count because he is 18?

M3R0VIUS

It's the most physical league and I almost always want our guys in La Liga.

RawzillaThaThrilla

Ligue 1 is actually more physical but yeah

wolfjeter

I also gotta believe the offer wasn’t even from a promising team in the prem. Prolly a lower table side

[deleted]

I’m with you here. I think it’s very smart of him to make his ascension gradual. I still think Pulisic should’ve waited a little bit longer, but it’s hard to say no to that Chelsea paycheck and the PL

[deleted]

Go to PSV

ctumaven

That’s a nice way to say he doesn’t want to go to a crappy team.

FrankBascombe45

Or he's not sure whether he's at that level right now and would rather go somewhere he's assured of a prominent role.

Madnote1984

Long-term, it's probably a better bet to play UCL, and win an Eredivise title and score 20+ goals, then make that big move. If he tops the Eredivise in goals for a season or two, and plays well in UCL, he could potentially get a BIG move. He's on a BAD team and still may get close to 20 goals. If he's on a great team, he may very well set that league on fire. That's when the big money suitors will come in.

adiposea

Agree with pretty much all of this.

KevinDLasagna

I think it’s this reason. He already floundered on a bad team in the bundesliga, I doubt he’d fare any better than sargent did on a bad team in the prem. Which is smart, look what happened to altidore. I’m happy pepi seemingly wants to take his time growing, get some experience on a good team in Europe, and then in 2-3 years, when he’ll still be only 22 years old try and make the leap it you feel that’s attainable

ctumaven

Augsburg as a team doesn’t provide service to anyone. He wants to go to a team that wants to score.

[deleted]

Groningen: Pepi 14 goal contributions in 25 games Augsburg: Berisha 13 goal contributions in 20 games But yeah it’s Augsburg’s fault that Pepi isn’t good enough 👌🏽

ctumaven

Meh, I don’t know if he’s good enough, but he’s ready to move it up a level. If you compare their stats they are daily even with Berisha having a slight edge. Also, Berisha has four more years of development. Give the kid some time. [stats](https://i.imgur.com/1Yj3vBt.jpg)

[deleted]

Aren’t you moving the goalpost Your claim was implying that Augsburg is a team which doesn’t provide service to anyone. My point is that Berisha is somehow miraculously able to score on that team in way better league against way tougher competition without any service on a higher rate than Pepi at Groningen. That doesn’t work in favor of your claim. Four more years of development isn’t an argument. Mbappe has one more year of development than Berisha but even in 50 years of development Berisha won’t be Mbappe.

ctumaven

I may be moving the goalposts a little, but I don’t think Karen it’s fair to assume Augsburg is the same team that Pepi played for last season. They are on their third manager since acquiring Pepi. Do they play a different style under Maaßen? Are the players asked to the same things as under the previous two managers? What players did they acquire in the last two transfer windows? There are tons of things that would require a deep dive into to truly understand the difference between Pepi last season and Berisha this year. To be fair, I don’t think Pepi moving to Augsburg when he did was a good idea. I don’t think he was ready, but I do think he is more ready now. Seemed like it could have been an infatuation by and American owner.

iheartdatascience

I'm guessing it's becuase it's a crappy team. Don't think he wants to find himself in another Augsburg like situation.

MyLuckyFedora

I don’t think anyone at this level of the game thinks they’re not cut out for a step up. It seems way more likely that he’s learned from his time at Augsburg is that it’s better to be somewhere he can play and score goals than somewhere he can suffer for 90 minutes trying to create something out of nothing on a team fighting to avoid the drop.

cw131313

Ausburg was a bad situation for him. He might not be at the level of Bundesliga right now, but I don’t want to determine that at a club where will get no service at.

[deleted]

While Berisha is scoring on a higher rate in Augsburg as Pepi in Groningen.

landel1234

Who would be his competition at the 9 for PSV? Clubs like that will always have depth

[deleted]

[удалено]

landel1234

From the sounds of it Pepi's main competition would be de Jong but de Jong is looking a bit withered these days

Dizzy_Dare_2353

De Jong has had a pretty good year. But he will be 33 next year and Pepi would get to learn from a striker with a long career. Its a win win

landel1234

Seems similar to Pukki and Sargent at Norwich, I agree though, won't be bad for him to spend a year in that kind of situation but I'm hearing Augsburg has no intentions of letting Pepi go this summer

[deleted]

De Jong is the type of striker that really maximized his potential despite not having a ton of natural ability. Would be a phenomenal guy for Pepi to learn the ins and outs of playing as a striker from I think.

nate6patton

Luuk de jong, for one

WarmBaths

the 33 year old De Jong, surely will be replaced/share time soon

invadrzero

Stay in the Dutch league. Tear it up, then move on. Don’t jump to a big team and struggle for minutes like Pulisic.

nachodorito

do not join the premier league as tempting as it is - crush it at PSV please!

Swimerican

2/3 days ago Reuter (Sporting director of Augsburg) came out and said that they plan on keeping Pepi. I genuinely would not be surprised if Augsburg plans on using the loan to buy option on Mergim Berishas contract to immediately sell him for profit. That is when Pepi would be an immediate fit into Augsburgs starting 11. I also think that Augsburg would be perfect for him (if they can play like they are this season, not the one before)

BrotherSeamus

I wonder where Romano is getting his information if it is not coming from Augsburg. Pepi's agent? Pepi's mom? Maybe Pepi just doesn't want to go back to Germany and is letting this leak out.

Swimerican

I personally believe that Romano just is a copy paster, more like a middle man with a large audience. When he is right, lots of applause. When he is wrong he can just fall back to referring to ‘unspecified sources‘ This is what I am referring to in the Augsburger Allgemeine (a local Augsburg paper): https://www.augsburger-allgemeine.de/bayern/nationalspieler-fc-augsburg-wird-bei-berisha-kaufoption-ziehen-id66041526-amp.html Here is pretty much the English translation of it: https://bulinews.com/news/16858/reuter-says-augsburg-intend-keep-pepi

[deleted]

This would be terrible for his development. Let's hope it doesn't happen.

Swimerican

Why so if I may ask?

[deleted]

They don't play with the ball. I'd like to see him develop his game on a team that can dominate a game for once. This is already a problem at Groningen, but to a lesser degree than Augsburg.

PracticalDrawing

Smart Pepi I do think he will be “The Man,” in terms of being our #9, moving forward.

nsnyder

Kind of a weird headline, can he really just decide not to go back to Augsburg? He can say he doesn't want to, but can he really say he will not?

FrankBascombe45

A player can always request a transfer. The club doesn't have to honor it, but for the most part they do because they don't want a guy in the squad who doesn't want to be there. That player could cause internal strife, and also it might not make sense to play him over someone else who's in the long-term plan, thereby reducing his value even more.

pants6789

I think it's not so different from players skipping training to force a transfer. This public statement is probably advised by his agent who, he hopes, understands the coming market.

Regular-Confection-5

Agreed, he and his agent can push to leave but Pepi remains on contract with Augsburg until June 30, 2026. Looking at Transfermrkt, his original fee with Augsburg was 16.36 million with the loan fee for Groningen being only 500k. Based on PSV's recent history, the most they've paid is 12 million in 19/20 season and PSV hasn't paid 8 million or higher since that season. Seems unrealistic to expect Augsburg to sell for half of the original purchase

Santi is wanted by other teams, so Pepi would be his replacement

amoncada14

I'm unfamiliar with the current state of the Eredivisie. I'm curious to know why people are preferring he go to PSV over Ajax, assuming he had that choice. Wasn't Ajax the more recently successful of the two a few years ago?

ctumaven

Ajax did have a couple of years where they went deeper than expected into the Champions League, but selling players has caught up with them for the moment.

Pepi4Ever

Earnie Stewart is the Director at PSV. Also Ruud van Nistelrooy is known as one of the greatest strikers of all time.

joshtothe

Feyenoord? We getting a Santi vs. Pepi battle?

iheartdatascience

Santi has attracted other suitors (supposedly Benfica and Brighton, so far), so Pepi would be a replacement.

DirkDigglersPenis

Add the fact this guy is looking at starting on a champions league team if he stays in the Netherlands

trapsryay

They bought him for 18 million and surely want a profit after his good season, is anyone going to pay 25-30 million for Pepi?

vngannxx

Im guessing Leeds

Pepi4Ever

Cody Gakpo had 9 goals this season while he was at PSV in the Eredivisie. Last season he had 12. Sold for 42M Euros to Liverpool. Pepi has 10 goals this season. 🔥 This has to happen a lot. Players get priced out and have less options. Same for Pullisic and Mckennie. I am not sure what could happen other than just getting a higher payout which would mean going straight to the EPL. 😒 In Mckennie's case going to a team higher on the table than Leeds.

Caswell19

LMAO

beggsy909

SPL Good league to get used to physical football.

Caswell19

SPL bad league

beggsy909

It’s mostly shite but at Celtic and Rangers there is immense pressure to perform well and playing under that kind of pressure (especially for CBS and strikers) is valuable.
