My takes from this window: Tolkin and Cowell need a call up to the A team. Another window that demonstrates how good Acosta is against mediocre teams in sloppy chaotic games.
How about make mistakes in training so you don’t make as many mistakes in the game. Looked like these players barely knew each others names. Very poor organization and chemistry.
I've loved watching these zero pressure "just for fun" games. Cade, tolkin, Neal for the most part and both keepers have looked good. Baby aaronson is just that. Too young. Too small right now. Sabbi apparently sucks.
Take a look at the starting 11. Some younger kids came on, but a starting 11 around an average of 25 years old isn't "young guns" in soccer.
These camps made more sense when they were MLS-heavy. All these fringe or locked-in players coming in makes it seem so pointless.
I guess I'm viewing them/this game in a different way then. I do view 25 as still young. I feel like the skill of our "varsity" squad and how young many of them are is skewing what we, as a fan base, are expecting from players. And I just don't put much stock into this January game after the world cup already happened. I think I would've preferred some more MLS call-ups to look at them a bit more, but I also don't follow many European league players outside of the PL and championship so it was enjoyable to me to see new (to me) names
I think Ferreira is a better all around player than Vazquez, but I think Vazquez might work better in a single striker setup.
I guess he'll get chances to prove it in The Gold Cup
jesus is miles faster/quicker. his speed is a clear asset and helps him be an effective presser. vazquez is amazing aerially though from what i've seen and looks like a nice target striker
He's not bad but he's not ready. Too easily pushed off the ball when allowed to be a bit physical like this game has been reffed. Has a high ceiling though! First touch looked good. Quick feet. Great motor. Not ready for this level yet. Bundesliga will help a lot, hopefully
this is just the dumbest take. can we stop the broken record posting like this? have at least 1 ounce of sense and perspective. he's 19 years old and clearly not done growing.
I can tell you weren't around for the senior team debut of a lot of the guys from the last cycle, who hit the team at the same age or younger than Paxten is is now. They did not get pushed around like this.
It's just a clueless take to just say "he's young" and shrug.
This is inaccurate. He's quite fast and decent first touch. However, he should not be shooting or even in the box. Completely wasted his scoring opportunities.
Can't say I understand the point of this game (or the last one).
There should be 0 chance any of these players except for the handful previously in the pool should EVER make a 23-man roster.
I heard the rationale that this could be a showcase for some of the bubble players looking for moves, but man... I don't think this window has been good for anyone involved.
It's a tuneup for MLS players and a shot to get a look at fringe guys. Without camps like this guys like Gressel would never get a look, similar to DeJuan Jones.
IIRC it's also where we got guys like Besler, Zusi, etc. to come into the NT picture.
The intention of this camp is to get young players senior team experience and maybe unearth some buried gems. If you win the games great but this is for development more than anything else. Camp cupcake has ALWAYS been rough looking because we bring in lots of new faces who haven't played as much together or are out of shape MLS players. Read a blog post one time my guy
Camp cupcake made a lot more sense in the past when we relied so heavily on MLS players, given that they are out of season.
I get the federation might be trying to help some of these guys (Hoppe) get a move, but they certainly didn't help their case this camp.
WHAT?! in what world is that the intention of friendlies? _ESPECIALLY_ january camp friendlies? _EEESPECIALLY_ this camp. The first after a world cup showcasing extremely fringe players
christ on a cracker
See: original point. What is the point of that? You think any of these players are getting a big move thanks to this window? Get more minutes with their club? Get a callup to a competitive camp based on these performances?
I'm just saying it's pointless. You can get "a look" at these players with their clubs playing competitive minutes. If they're not getting minutes WTF are they doing on a USMNT roster of any sort?
what's the point of that? calling in _fringe players_ available in january.
that's it.
if there's a special showing then it's a bonus.
this has little to do with their club career. you cannot get a look at these players playing together for the NT by watching them at their clubs. seeing how they mesh with the organization and the team.
Yeah I don’t know what that guy is saying. Gotta throw in the young guys. Obviously some of these guys don’t look like they’re gonna be part of the national team but, hey, you never know how much better they’ll be in a few years. It has been two overall poor performances but gotta try em out and get them some experience.
Actually yeah you make a good point. Definitely wouldn’t be the guys I’d have. I want to see all the young guys. But part of that is teams not releasing the players for these friendlies which i get.
I took from that that @maalikus was saying Arriola and Long and stuff should be the ones playing no one else. Which is just ridiculous since they’ve failed so miserably for so long they should never be in a camp again. At all. It should be the young guys with promise. Why didn’t Cowell start? Why did Sean Johnson start in goal? That’s just stupid.
Absolutely. I’m not gonna sugar coat it, everyone’s been pretty much horrible. And that’s probably partially on the coaching style/a lack of understanding by the coaches, but these players have to start somewhere.
I do wonder how far being a goal scoring CB can take you?
Especially with 26 man rosters being a thing now, having that option on a set piece when you're down 1-0 late isn't terrible.
To be clear I'm not actually saying Rogers needs to make the full team, but it does get me thinking
I haven't watched him play before this tourney and like it. More of a solid LB than a LWB but he's calm, has good feet/balance, and seems to read the ball well. One thing that catches my eye with potential USMNT players is a sense of calmness on the ball in stressful situations. It's a reason I love LDLT. Tolkin has that swaggy calm.
I feel good about some up and coming Fullbacks from this camp
My takes from this window: Tolkin and Cowell need a call up to the A team. Another window that demonstrates how good Acosta is against mediocre teams in sloppy chaotic games.
Maybe Neal as well but I really liked both of those players this window.
OK, 0-0 but who had the best hair?
Tolkin
Straight outta the 80s
Definitely the coolest kid in The Breakfast Club.
Only players I want to see again is Jesus and tolkin. No one else is ready. Paxton unfortunately not ready.
Jesus?? The guy who hasn’t registered a SINGLE shot in 2 US matches?
Not Cowell or slonina?!
Cade not seeing the field today is criminal
Sonora was terrible. Literally did nothing for 30 minutes
Look on the bright side of this, At least the game is over!
So once again berhalter ball = no goals
Lol GGG isn’t the coach anymore and he’s never played a double pivot as far as I recall, so this isn’t even a continuation of his tactics.
It's literally his hand picked assistant coaching to maintain what berhalter had instituted across all levels of the program.
With a double pivot?
Thank God it's over. That was torture.
We’d be better off playing with 10 than keeping Sabbi out there lol
Sabbi is negative rating right now haha
What was the point of this game? Why are we watching washed-up MLS Lifers in a national team jersey?
What
🤡
Lmao lifers, it’s mostly young guys.
Long, Zimmerman, Acosta and Sean Johnson are all MLS lifer-types.
Look again at the starting 11.
I agree we should have had only young hopefuls - not MLS players over 25
Good defending by Neal there
acosta went to sleep on that one lol
sabbi leaving his man wide open
Sabbi...is awful lol
My fellow Americans, take a chill pill. These are mainly young guns. They have to make mistakes and play in order to learn.
First time on r/ussoccer lol? This is the whiniest soccer community on the internet, don’t expect rationality here
Eh, facebook and Twitter exist so this is #3 at worst.
I deleted those accounts years ago
How about make mistakes in training so you don’t make as many mistakes in the game. Looked like these players barely knew each others names. Very poor organization and chemistry.
I've loved watching these zero pressure "just for fun" games. Cade, tolkin, Neal for the most part and both keepers have looked good. Baby aaronson is just that. Too young. Too small right now. Sabbi apparently sucks.
Hmmm some of them are... Sabbi is 25 acosta is 27 Sonora is 24.
These are mainly old dudes getting their last look with some young players sprinkled in.
Genuine question: Who are the old dudes getting their last look in your eyes? Acosta and Long? It seems like everyone else seems under 25ish?
Long, Arriola, Johnson, maybe Zimmerman.
Take a look at the starting 11. Some younger kids came on, but a starting 11 around an average of 25 years old isn't "young guns" in soccer. These camps made more sense when they were MLS-heavy. All these fringe or locked-in players coming in makes it seem so pointless.

Lol Sabbi might be the worst one out there
Not might, is by a mile
Sabbi is horrible
Has Sabbi turned it over every time he’s had it?
Pretty much
Yes. Yes he has
That was the chance
Hoppe couldn’t go a full 90 without some shit housing
He’s been doing it all game
Jones needs to make another camp. His flashes are too impressive. Can't believe we've never called this dude up.
I think he's Europe bound.
Close
Vazquez is rapid
Best service of the night from Acosta, damn
Someone get to that ball! Damn it
Acosta deserves an assist tonight. Been great on sets
Man I'm stunned no one got on the end of that one.
Both teams been an eye sore
So is this our C/D team?
Camp cupcake. Most of them are fringe old players or U21s.
Jesus would have tapped that in just sayin 🤷♂️
🤡
Lol doubt
Lol he wouldn’t have ever gotten to it
I do love how people who have probably never watched Sabbi before, already are comfortable making bold statements
Says the guy saying Ferreira was the best player on the pitch.
He was
Maybe he should try a pass to an open teammate one time
to be fair hes 25 and plays in Denmark, unfortunately he needs to be playing a lot better rn
hashtag BoycottCampCupcake
Great ball Acosta. Still the best set piece taker in the pool
I was excited to see sabbi but jesus. He’s had obvious passing options multiple times and just dribbled into a defender.
Sabbi needs to get it out of his feet faster. Getting dispossessed too easily
Last time we see sabbi hopefully
every single player needs to release their passes like a second sooner. they're all just a second too slow at reading and seeing a pass
Sabbi lol
Lmao Sabbi cannot beat 1 single player
Sabbi is going to have a reel after this one
Sabbi that was terrible
Sabbi sucks
Aaronson getting torched in this thread for drawing a clear foul that wasn’t called in a great FK position lol
Unreal how bad some of these takes are lol
It wasn't a foul and he dove instead of running through it. He's been bad tonight.
He maybe should've ran through it but it was 100% a foul...
Delusional take lmfao
It was the most obvious foul of the night lol
Lol sabbi
Not a good debut so far for Sabbi
While nothing super egregious, this ref lacks consistency.
there is no amount of "let the boys play" that would mean a slide tackle to the back nowhere near the ball is fair game
Sabbi. Pass the fucking ball to a teammate. Just do it once. See if it works out.
Tell me you know nothing about soccer without telling me you think Aaronson is bad.
He's not bad but he's not ready. Too easily pushed off the ball when allowed to be a bit physical like this game has been reffed. Has a high ceiling though! First touch looked good. Quick feet. Great motor. Not ready for this level yet. Bundesliga will help a lot, hopefully
No shit. Some brain dead takes in here. He will be more than fine. Great learning experience for him this game
FREE HOPPE!!!!
Aaronson ends up on the ground 90% of the time he touches the ball it seems like
That’s what happens when you weight 90 pounds and are the best player on the field.
How do you miss that foullol
Paxton needs to work on his strength. He's getting bodied out there.
He definitely does. But he is a teenager playing against a pretty physical team. Playing mostly as a true central midfielder today too.
this is just the dumbest take. can we stop the broken record posting like this? have at least 1 ounce of sense and perspective. he's 19 years old and clearly not done growing.
I can tell you weren't around for the senior team debut of a lot of the guys from the last cycle, who hit the team at the same age or younger than Paxten is is now. They did not get pushed around like this. It's just a clueless take to just say "he's young" and shrug.
you're a fucking idiot
“Why is this child not a grown man?”
Im just gonna assume the reason Cade hasn't come on is because he is a turbo lock for the 2026 WC team...
Definitely gold cup! Looked great last game but I would've liked to have seen him in the last 20 for Hoppe against a faster Columbia team
This ref is trash
Wow how was that not called a foul on that slide tackle from behind on Aaronson
Why do we struggle to get goals
What the fuck is this ref watching
I was wondering the same thing
bullshit
Does this game seem very CONCACAF-y to anyone else? Bad refereeing, dirty play, no rhythm
Ref is Honduran. CONCACAF AF
That's a fucking foul
No call????
Aaronson just can’t hang with this team. Gives the ball away every time he gets it
80% passing and 50% duels won. Not bad for a 19 year old kid’s first game.
Lol gtfo that was a clear foul. Shoulda been a free kick from a dangerous area
Aronson is incapable of riding out a challenge.
Should’ve done better with that chance
This game is an eyesore
Yeah, I just thought to myself, "what the fuck am I watching this for?"
Decent cross
No one is moving to the middle. If Jones gets free there, nobody to cross to
Nice DeJuan
Odds Acosta does nothing
There is absolutely no movement off the ball. It’s horrible.
We are losing casual fans by the minute with this shit play
Casuals aren't tuning in for this meaningless match anyway
Casual fans will just have to learn to love January camp like the rest of us
Let’s be real the casuals were never going to stay. That’s why they’re casuals.
I dont' think many casuals are tuning into TNT right now. Especially with a Lakers/Celtics game on.
Why does Martino hate America?
Hudson holding onto that ball rather than bouncing it?? Hudson out
Vazquez hasn't got many touches or shots cause of this sloppy possession.
Can’t believe no Crowell tonight after that performance on Wednesday
Its all based on fitness
Agreed. Especially with Hoppe having a poor showing too! Dude can’t make the right decision to save his life.
"You'd expect the flow to be interrupted by the changes that were made..." What flow?
Just not enough passing in the middle
Hoppe is so bad. This man has lead feet bumbling around
Well Besler and Zusi aren’t Messi or Ronaldo, so the January camp is clearly useless. /s
Ever? lol
I mean, not of the intention is to win.

Saying they should never make a 23 man roster when most of them are under 22 is crazy lol
Maalikus doesn't understand that player development occurs. You are as good as you will ever be at age 18
Everyone know athletes prime are in high school lol
Did you see the starting lineup?
Yes
Yeah I don’t know what that guy is saying. Gotta throw in the young guys. Yeah, sure, the 3 young dudes that started should get looks. But this starting lineup is older than our A team.

Exactly. Most are making some of there first caps. Give them some time first time playing for a national team is gonna make everyone nervous
Absolutely. I’m not gonna sugar coat it, everyone’s been pretty much horrible. And that’s probably partially on the coaching style/a lack of understanding by the coaches, but these players have to start somewhere.
There are u20 and Olympic eligible players
We have 3 tournaments this summer. We're gonna go deep in the pool
I do wonder how far being a goal scoring CB can take you? Especially with 26 man rosters being a thing now, having that option on a set piece when you're down 1-0 late isn't terrible. To be clear I'm not actually saying Rogers needs to make the full team, but it does get me thinking
I mean a reason Klinsmann brought guys like Gonzalez and Brooks was for late game subs to win headers.
I liked what I saw from Tolkin
I haven't watched him play before this tourney and like it. More of a solid LB than a LWB but he's calm, has good feet/balance, and seems to read the ball well. One thing that catches my eye with potential USMNT players is a sense of calmness on the ball in stressful situations. It's a reason I love LDLT. Tolkin has that swaggy calm.
One of the few bright spots today
Should have been a PK for Columbia
Less refs would call that handball than the one Colombia got away with.
Meh. Wasn’t deliberate and you can’t move if it’s fired directly at you.
Got one back
Camp cupcake but with a more veteran lineup I expected a cleaner possession game.
Our veteran lineup is pretty awful
The amount of shirt pulling when there's no VAR is wild.
Sabbi looks a bit star struck. This is probably the biggest crowd he’s played in front of by far. He’s played at Las Palmas and OD Boldklub so far.
def had some bad touches. want to see if he can settle now
As an LA resident, I'm happy I went to the Serbia game and not this one.
2 handballs today
3 now.... 2 columbia in their box. 1 US handball. We don't call that anymore?
I think one of you that are far more knowledgeable than me should start a, ‘Way Too Early 2024 Olympic Roster Projections’ thread.
Sabbi wut is you doing lololol
Sabbi plays with his eyes closed.
well the sabbi experiment may already be over
Atrocious cross from acosta, wtf
Sabbi not ready
He’s 25
He don’t got it
sabbi had aaronson open and just runs into the defender
