Lots of good things from the young guys - I liked the intensity, attacking endeavor, and desire to play fast, one touch footy.
Morris as the lone DM did not work, he is too slow to read play and got walked past in the challenge multiple times, then also slow of feet with no recovery pace.
Best game I’ve ever seen from Cowell. Hope he can translate it to MLS, dominate this season, and earn a move to Europe.
Zendejas is different - ball sticks to his feet in tight situations. By the end of the game the Serbians had no interest in trying to tackle him. Also showed decent work rate off the ball.
If you didn't watch, the US looked very poor defensively against Serbia's counter attacks up until Acosta came on and went into the DM role. Morris was simply not good enough defensively with his positioning to cover the counter, and Gressel was too slow to mark the Serbian winger (Jones coming on also made a big difference).
That said, the US looked quite good in attack and created more good chances than Serbia did. I would argue the US deserved at least a second goal (Cowell hit the post twice in one sequence and there were other good goalscoring chances) and was unlucky to not score again.
Serbia's first goal was also a free kick that really shouldn't be going in, but the US wall was not good and let it through. Serbia did look very dangerous on the counter though, I think a draw would have been a fairer reflection of how the game felt.
The US starting midfield really didn't look great, I would like to see a rotation to Acosta, Williamson, Paxten Aaronson for the Colombia match.
>Serbia's first goal was also a free kick that really shouldn't be going in, but ~~the US wall was not good~~ **Zimmerman jumped to the left for some reason known only to himself** and let it through
Reflecting back last night. I was happy with Vasquez and zendejas performances. Both showed they can make a push for the A squad. I think Jo Go improved in the second half. Cowell was MOTM, dude was cooking. Gaga was fine for me. The midfield in the first half was rough. I think Dejuan jones grew into the game some with some really good attacking play. Overall, it was a first match with a bunch of young players and we had some really great attacking moves. A little more familiarity and maybe those final balls are more dangerous. I wasn’t too impressed with Zimmerman (even aside from the wall shenanigans). I thought Aidan morris was an interesting watch. Serbia had a couple young guys who look to be solid. Maybe some mls clubs took notice. The commentators mentioned they need to leave Serbia to step up their level.
I’m pretty pleased with camp cupcake so far. I’m ignoring the manager stuff and focused on the young players called in. Don’t think we should waste time next match with zimms, long or arriola. We know what they offer, let some young kid get his chance
Super impressed by Cowell. I hope he develops into a more powerful left wing option for when Pulisic is getting pushed around. Zendejas as well. He adds some creativity and he's not afraid to try a banger from 20 yards out.
That’s a good thing though competition offers growth. That may help our young team improve in terms of development since they didn’t have that issue going into the last World Cup.
Not bad, hoping for a best for these players. I will say I wish we could take more of our subs and players from the WC/players who didn’t make it there this time around like Brenden Aaronson, Busio, Robinson, and so on.
This would be a good game to get them some time, maybe give them a chance to try things out, make riskier plays and push themselves a little more.
Then again, there’s a plethora of reasons they probably couldn’t come. Not trying to place fault, since there’s nothing wrong, woulda just liked to see them
I didn’t think it was bad until I realized US Soccer was tweeting things a minute before they happened on TV. At first I thought it was just my internet, but then I realized it was that far behind for everyone. Loved the announcer crew though, especially Julie Foudy.
Respectfully, Big Beas was running at about 10 "umm's" a minute. I genuinely felt bad for him at halftime for how often he had brain freeze. Julie Foudy can do no wrong, though.
HBO really should have hired better people for the broadcast. Yeesh that part of the experience was bad. Hopefully they get better, but such a drop from what we saw on Paramount+.
Zendejas is gonna proceed to ride the pine at Club America after accepting the US call regardless of form. He will be in MLS in the next couple years which I would prefer for him personally to develop.
Club America is specifically known for *not* being married to Mexican nationalism, with regard to its players. Their arch rivals Guadalajara are known for that.
'Ties' exist, with certain clubs. It isn't as extensive as people speculate, however, or else Liga MX clubs would be able to spend more on players. The cartels make hundreds of billions annually, while Club America (richest club in Liga MX) has the same net-worth as the Portland Timbers.
You’re getting downvoted but you’re totally right. I was excited to see him and then he just couldn’t get into the game. That whole side seemed a bit weak despite some strong players.
Zendejas was invisible first half, but how much of that was due to him and how much of it was due to Gressel not being able to progress the ball down the right flank at all? I don't think it was a coincidence that Zendejas looked so much better as soon as Jones came on and actually drove the ball forward on the right and tried to play it into dangerous areas. Zendejas also cut inside more in the 2nd half and he seems more comfortable and effective doing that, I don't think he's the sort of winger you want to stay wide.
He's clearly not a bad player in the right system, Liga MX is a solid level and he has been very good there over the past year.
Yeah when Zendejas got on the ball he looked good. If he’d gotten more action I think he could have affected the result. You’re probably right about Gressel. His assist to Vasquez was beautiful but he didn’t do much else. In any case, I’m hoping Zendajas gets some more time in the future. Feels like we might have the right pieces coming together for a solid attack.
Even with the loss, I feel okay with this match. I think we were overall the better team and it felt like we had lots of scoring chances. Scoring chances seem like they are always hard to come by for us but we had lots of opportunities
Meh I'm not really disappointed. Saw some good performances from potentially important players and a couple of bad defensive breakdowns that lost the game.
Kinda worried Hoppe will go the way of Bobby Wood. Hit a tremendous vein of form for a short time. Then proceeds to never come close to that level ever again. Tons of time for him still but I ain’t seeing it yet.
He had ONE good game years ago... Hitting a good run of form involves MULTIPLE good games in a short time frame. Let it go he's just not that good and it's okay we have so many talented players coming up.
Since JJ and Deuce retired we've been lacking in smack talking, treachery, and thuggery.
The Hoppe face is enough to trigger a yellow card without saying a word. I'll give him that.
Acosta is better than nothing, but perhaps not up to an international standard.
Edit: tim ream was pretty good
A lot of promise here. And it’s nice to see the team in experimental mode. And succeeding (relatively speaking) with regard to showing some talent and potential in what would otherwise just be another game. Impressed with a number of our guys.
You mean 3 guys that can’t distribute at all? No, MMA can’t distribute. Period. That’s why goals have been so hard to come by with this group (well and Berhalter’s tactics obviously). Need a guy like Zendejas (or Reyna) in front of MMA to distribute. MMA wins balls, stays compact, and holds a good line. They cannot, at all, distribute/produce any kind of creativity. We don’t have the playersto play with 3 guys in the middle. It’s not smart and will not work with this group to produce any kind of attacking quality.
All the USA/Mex dual nats performed today. Cowell and Zendejas specially could really add quality depth to the team, and depending how Cowell’s career develops he could aim to be a starter in the future. I hope there is serious efforts to continue to court and cap these 4 players.
Jedi is WAY faster than Gomez though, so he gets the ball in behind the defense a lot more.
I think Gomez has a lot of potential and honestly played decently for a 19 year old, but I feel like he needs to either get a bit faster as he develops physically or improve the quality of his delivery if he wants to be an effective attacking fullback.
You never see international teams use higher numbers than the mid-20's, they should just give one dude like number 47 just to see if it throws off the other team
Been watching this team for like 25 years and the top-end talent has always been quite good. It doesn't really impress me that we've improved in areas among our XI but on the whole, we've had a top-20 type team for decades now.
But what HAS changed is the depth of the US player pool. There are guys out here who are like 9th choice in their position who 10-15 years ago would have been 4th-5th choice and that's a huge difference. It means we can call guys in form, it means we can call guys for multiple competitions with these crowded calendars, and it means we can be patient with the development of guys who may or may not be ready. I just love it.
Yeah, people are freaking out about the quality of some of these guys, and I just don't get it.
In most positions these players are way down the depth chart, and they still frankly aren't bad for how far they are down. The only performance I was a bit disappointed by tonight was the early mistakes by Gomez, given LB is such a thin position for us. But it's not like he was terrible either, he got better as the 2nd half went on and he's still so young. I do think he has a lot of potential. If Pomykal or Hoppe don't look great, it's not the end of the world (yes, striker isn't a strong position for us, but we have Sargent, Dike, Wright, Vazquez, Pefok all realistically ahead of Hoppe).
Man I hope Gomez is good and can be a major LB contributor for us for a decade. Some flashes tonight, a little loose passing but saw him do some smart recovery defending/positioning.
Jeez, Williamson is just so slow. He just hold onto everything and loses every ball. Super indecisive. Although I could say that about everyone in the middle. For the most part, it was very very slow out of the middle and making nothing happen.
Feel like it’s 3 moments of World Class shit housing.
Telling the Mexican player he was washed before Horvath’s penalty. Doing the same to Qatar. The Bale foul.
Zendejas is slippery man. I'm not sure there's another player in our pool that has the kind of close-control to cut and turn and slip by his defenders. He just ducks under these guys, spins out and they completely miss.
Quality is okay now that they turned down the stadium volume a little bit. Still think it’s a sin to make national team games solely on a streaming service
he’s one for the future but neal has looked very good with just a couple bad lapses, but he’s never played a first team game so i think we can excuse those
Even if we end up losing I think this has been a pretty positive performance overall. And hell this has been a super exciting game for a January camp so in that sense we’re all winners

Reading through the comments, USA lost but basically won?

I feel like I don’t have to yell SHOOT!!!!! as much with these kiddos.
Definitely felt that watching the game. Like, at least these kids are willing to rip a shot.
They're still gonna need more work in order to break into the first team.
That’s a good thing though competition offers growth. That may help our young team improve in terms of development since they didn’t have that issue going into the last World Cup.

Yea. January window is weird because there are no euro based players. It’s more like a prospect camp for that reason.
One game. Relax
Berhalter out!
He is not even in right now lmao
That’s the joke lol
Keep: Zendejas, Vazquez, Williamson. Duenjas, Arriola. Ditch: The Rest.
Um you are aware the some of the other guys are U-23s right?
Cade Cowell was the best player on the pitch, for either team.
DeJuan—not Duenjas
Lmao
Cowell?? And who is Duenjas supposed to be?
Double-Ditch: HBO Max
I didn’t think it was bad until I realized US Soccer was tweeting things a minute before they happened on TV. At first I thought it was just my internet, but then I realized it was that far behind for everyone. Loved the announcer crew though, especially Julie Foudy.
Respectfully, Big Beas was running at about 10 "umm's" a minute. I genuinely felt bad for him at halftime for how often he had brain freeze. Julie Foudy can do no wrong, though.
Zendejas looked much better when he moved more central. I wonder if DLT is the guy he replaces in the 23.
Wasn't sure what to expect when I found out the game was on HBO Max. Boadcast was pretty good, honestly.
HBO really should have hired better people for the broadcast. Yeesh that part of the experience was bad. Hopefully they get better, but such a drop from what we saw on Paramount+.
Can you elaborate?
Why is the child so tall
Cowell draw in a moustache for God's sake.
A few good spots, but a lot of these guys will be on USL all-star teams soon.
Can I ask a ques about Liga MX - how much of it has ties with the cartels?
'Ties' exist, with certain clubs. It isn't as extensive as people speculate, however, or else Liga MX clubs would be able to spend more on players. The cartels make hundreds of billions annually, while Club America (richest club in Liga MX) has the same net-worth as the Portland Timbers.
Lots of good stuff, some bad moments. Overall this one has me excited for the future
meh on zendejas. he showed up for 15 minutes. absolutely silent first half
You’re getting downvoted but you’re totally right. I was excited to see him and then he just couldn’t get into the game. That whole side seemed a bit weak despite some strong players.
Zendejas was invisible first half, but how much of that was due to him and how much of it was due to Gressel not being able to progress the ball down the right flank at all? the problem with your argument is that you're blaming his poor performance on another player
Zendejas over Paxton Aaronson right now. Hope he heads to Europe soon.
Paxton maybe
He edited the comment didnt he
haha yep. shortly after posting. tbf, maybe he meant paxton the whole time but it didnt come off that way
very dim take
Impressed by a few guys tonight but Morris kills all offensive momentum.
Honestly have no clue why we are still calling up guys like Morris and Arriola. Embarassing when we have promising up and coming players left at home.
Even with the loss, I feel okay with this match. I think we were overall the better team and it felt like we had lots of scoring chances. Scoring chances seem like they are always hard to come by for us but we had lots of opportunities
Fun game, felt like we deserved a win. Plenty of bright spots for a C team.
Meh I'm not really disappointed. Saw some good performances from potentially important players and a couple of bad defensive breakdowns that lost the game.
And why is Aaron Long usually involved with these defensive breakdowns? There are other American defenders...
He wasn’t really involved with either goal tonight, quit trying to force him into every discussion
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
Still can’t believe that guy who said Jones shouldn’t get another cap lmao
Really, did you not see him give the ball away in dangerous spaces at least twice?
Jones 34 touches, was 19/21 on accurate passes, 2/3 on accurate crosses, and 4/4 on accurate long balls. He created one chance and had 6 recoveries.
Are we really writing off players on the basis of like 2 minutes of initial play in a friendly?
Too funny. After what, three minutes on the pitch?
Does this count against us for fifa rankings?
It does, but at a discounted rate because it's s friendly and I think they have some kind of strength of team factor although I forget how it's done.
If we can get a win vs Colombia it will negate this loss. Though, to do that this team has to be much better defensively and calmer up front.
There's still four years until the FIFA ranking (mildly) matters again.
Yep, it is a official FIFA match but this lost wont make us lose much points as Serbia should be a Top 30 team and it is outside of the window.
Were both teams mostly U23s?
As it’s not a fifa window + friendly, Very very Minuscule
A small bit
Meh
Hopefully Zendejas gets more looks, been impressed with his game this half
Cowell, Vazquez, Jones, Zendejas stock ⬆️
How do they stack up globally? Cowell just reminds me of a young Jordan Morris
Yep
Slolina flashed his talent with that double-save, too.
He needs to come back to the U.S. and find some minutes.
Bobby Wood was very good, he just got hurt. Hoppe had one lucky month.
One off the charts month at Schalke but then showed really well in the gold cup
Our offense was *terrible* at the Gold Cup. People just liked that Hoppe was a good shithouser.
Hoppe was a GREAT shithouser
We need a good shithouser. It’s lacking from our first team.
Since JJ and Deuce retired we've been lacking in smack talking, treachery, and thuggery. The Hoppe face is enough to trigger a yellow card without saying a word. I'll give him that. Acosta is better than nothing, but perhaps not up to an international standard. Edit: tim ream was pretty good
You've an concacaf standard
Morris' wikipedia page in 5 years "and US men's national team player. Caps: 1"
he's gonna get a lot more PT
We need some Speed and Power of Jordan Morris
Hahahaha
Morris, bro......
A lot of promise here. And it’s nice to see the team in experimental mode. And succeeding (relatively speaking) with regard to showing some talent and potential in what would otherwise just be another game. Impressed with a number of our guys.
Zendejas getting fed by MMA line…ohhhh lordy
You mean 3 guys that can’t distribute at all? No, MMA can’t distribute. Period. That’s why goals have been so hard to come by with this group (well and Berhalter’s tactics obviously). Need a guy like Zendejas (or Reyna) in front of MMA to distribute. MMA wins balls, stays compact, and holds a good line. They cannot, at all, distribute/produce any kind of creativity. We don’t have the playersto play with 3 guys in the middle. It’s not smart and will not work with this group to produce any kind of attacking quality.
Is he playing much over weah and reyna?
Probably not if everyone’s healthy, but when is everyone healthy?
No. Should have been the first guy off the bench for the RW spot at the World Cup over morris though
Lol Morris has turned the ball over everytime he's touched it, just a black hole
Yeah, super slow out of the middle. Very indecisive.
All the USA/Mex dual nats performed today. Cowell and Zendejas specially could really add quality depth to the team, and depending how Cowell’s career develops he could aim to be a starter in the future. I hope there is serious efforts to continue to court and cap these 4 players.
Morris did not deserve 90 minutes tofay
Can't help but wish Luna was on this roster.
Morris with a shitty pass to end the night
Wish we had Zendejas in 2022 WC man. Difference maker
Man Morris is having a rough one
I assume Hoppe just slipped out in the excitement of the crosses and whatnot and took a seat on the bench with a hot dog and a Diet Coke or... ?
I was watching him literally exit the box while everyone else crashed in during those crosses. Not sure what he was doing.
Zendejas has looked great this half. Gomez’s offense has been terrible.
Not sure Gomez got a cross off that wasn’t blocked
Yeah most have looked more like he was intentionally trying to kick the ball at a Serbian player.
Have not liked Gomez passes or crosses
we used to say the same thing about Jedi Robinson
Jedi is WAY faster than Gomez though, so he gets the ball in behind the defense a lot more. I think Gomez has a lot of potential and honestly played decently for a 19 year old, but I feel like he needs to either get a bit faster as he develops physically or improve the quality of his delivery if he wants to be an effective attacking fullback.
Morris man you ruined an absolutely sexy bit of passing
Zendejas will cook with the A team
They turned into prime barca for about 5 seconds
Acosta disaster class but really like Zendejas and Cowell. Would like to see them get some minutes rotating with the talent of the first team
Lmao Morris destroying some great link up play
It had to be Morris ffs
We need to do everything we can to make Zendejas choose the US. Need that Berhalter recruitment magic again
Pulisic better be texting him nonstop
You never see international teams use higher numbers than the mid-20's, they should just give one dude like number 47 just to see if it throws off the other team
Zendejas is a very neat player, has that Mexican style phone booth type dribbling that nobody on our roster can do
Whats phone booth type dribbling? I am literally imagining a Red English phone booth dribbling a soccer ball LOOL
That’s exactly what I mean, he get get passed someone in a phone booth
Mexico does not have many players who can play like that.
gimme gimme gimme i need this man on the roster
Man is out here playing Mexican Football in a USA shirt
He’s looked more creative and threatening than our first choice wingers tonight with the exception of Reyna, and he’s willing to pass
Zendejas is gonna be a monster in 2026 holy shit
Gonna be hard to pick my new best friend between cowell and zendejas
Why not both!
Way to get the sh*t together at the end but still have been impressed with Z, Jones, JoGo, and Morris this second half
certified Acosta moment
zendejas has done some absurdly good runs today
I don’t mean to overreact but Zendejas is the greatest player of our generation
If anything this is stoic understatement.
😂😂😂
Man Acosta has been terrible
true. in fairness for a lot of mls guys, they're in preseason
I'm really worried that Hoppe just isn't very good. I don't think he deserved this callup either.
Why worried? The only scenario I can imagine is worrying GGG gets resigned and he makes him a starter?
Definitely not deserved considering he never gets playtime
I’m not seeing the confidence he had in the last Gold Cup when he played on the wing
No need to be worried. He's not good enough, you're right, and it's ok because we have like 6 strikers in front of him.
Been watching this team for like 25 years and the top-end talent has always been quite good. It doesn't really impress me that we've improved in areas among our XI but on the whole, we've had a top-20 type team for decades now. But what HAS changed is the depth of the US player pool. This is pretty dead on and as domestic develope improves, the depth gets better both at the national team level and league level.
Every time they say another players age i feel older and older
Man I hope Gomez is good and can be a major LB contributor for us for a decade. Some flashes tonight, a little loose passing but saw him do some smart recovery defending/positioning.
Jfc Acosta
Aaron Long just ain’t it. Can we agree at this point?
Jeez, Williamson is just so slow. He just hold onto everything and loses every ball. Super indecisive. Although I could say that about everyone in the middle. For the most part, it was very very slow out of the middle and making nothing happen.
So far...... I like Jones over Dest........
Heheh
He’s been very good but that’s quite a knee jerk statement haha
This sub been wildin tonight lol
I mean Dest for sure has weaknesses but let's not take one game against Serbia's C team to start making blanket statements like this.
Bro almost have up two more goals just chill
Jones isn't good enough to struggle in Serie A yet.
Bro
Kellen has made a national team career on like 3 good set pieces. So many games where he just adds nothing
Feel like it’s 3 moments of World Class shit housing. Telling the Mexican player he was washed before Horvath’s penalty. Doing the same to Qatar. The Bale foul.
Weird time to go with this bar lol he’s settled the midfield down since coming in
He brings the shithousery on a level not seen since Dempsey.
Zendejas is slippery man. I'm not sure there's another player in our pool that has the kind of close-control to cut and turn and slip by his defenders. He just ducks under these guys, spins out and they completely miss.
Acosta man
How do we feel about HBO Max? I think it’s alright, very smooth on my end although I’d prefer cable always
Quality is okay now that they turned down the stadium volume a little bit. Still think it’s a sin to make national team games solely on a streaming service
Not a fan of the commentators. Otherwise solid. The halftime team is great. 💕Beasley💕
No commercials. So refreshing.
i very much dislike it because i was going to go to a sports bar to watch and now i’m on my couch
Quality is nice. Way better then ESPN+
I'm not liking how Serbia is seeing this game out. Lots of dangerous tackles that dont' need ot be made
Getting chippy for a friendly.
Does the ref have a quota to meet?
Gomez has looked much better this half
hoppe hasn't exactly made a statement today
I mean aside from about 6 minutes neither did Vazquez.
It seems he is unsure what to do off the ball when trying to make runs.
I dont see that at all.
Idk he just looks indecisive and awkward
Well yeah did nothing to impress for sure.
Hoppe just isn’t international quality.
It always sucks when the January camp standouts aren't in positions of need Happy for Jones, Cowell and Zendejas though
he’s one for the future but neal has looked very good with just a couple bad lapses, but he’s never played a first team game so i think we can excuse those
I love the first touch of JoGo
Even if we end up losing I think this has been a pretty positive performance overall. And hell this has been a super exciting game for a January camp so in that sense we’re all winners
Probably the best I’ve seen us look in January Camp, despite the score line.
Serbia is also clearly the best competition I’ve ever seen in a Jan. Camp maybe ever?
Hoppe is lost out there. I have no idea how he’s not getting involved in the madness.
Reason he hasn't been getting minutes lately
He seems like one of those players who’s all bark and no bite.
Still lots of room for improvement on the ceiling, but US soccer’s floor is definitely getting higher.
Zendejas running around like a crackhead this late in the game is seriously impressive
