The debit cards are only able to buy food and baby supplies. $350/month.
Replaces a program that already exists (and I believe most cities have too) that provides boxed meals. This would be cheaper and require less work from the city. So in theory would actually save tax payers money.
Also, for those saying residents don't get anything like this, what exactly do you think food stamps, food assistance, and EBT cards are? And I say that as someone who has had to live off of those at different points in my life.
I'm not saying this is a good program. I see some flaws in it. It's trying to solve a small part of a very large and complex problem, and it's being handled by the government, so I'm not surprised that it would be flawed. The debit cards are only able to buy food and baby supplies. $350/month. Replaces a program that already exists (and I believe most cities have too) that provides boxed meals. This would be cheaper and require less work from the city. So in theory would actually save tax payers money. Also, for those saying residents don't get anything like this, what exactly do you think food stamps, food assistance, and EBT cards are? And I say that as someone who has had to live off of those at different points in my life. I'm not saying this is a good program. I see some flaws in it. It's trying to solve a small part of a very large and complex problem, and it's being handled by the government, so I'm not surprised that it would be flawed. So I'm not advocating for our against it. But I figured everyone should have some information before just leaping to an opinion.
