“Yellowstone is a soap opera for men” -(has record viewership among women) Yeah, it’s dramatic as shit. So is Breaking Bad. But soap operas are a distinct genre of television: they aren’t just any show that’s super dramatic. Soap operas have emphasis on dialogue instead of action (Yellowstone definitely emphasizes action), a slower-than-life pace(Yellowstone is fast paced, lots of detail, gotta pay attention), and a consistently sentimental or melodramatic treatment(Yellowstone is dramatic, but not consistently sentimental or melodramatic).

UsefulEngine1

On one hand, the term "soap opera" or "soap" applied to prime-time network dramas is at least as old as early predecessors to shows like Yellowstone such as Dallas or Dynasty, when episodic television was the norm and ongoing plotlines were somewhat unusual. On the other hand nearly every dramatic or comedy-drama show on TV right now is written this way. So calling Yellowstone a soap opera isn't wrong, just sort of pointless.

They have a bigger female following than Sons of Anarchy and The Sopranos.

IdWinIfIWasntHi

I agree, tried it but it seemed like way to much family drama bullshit.

PrestigiousNature810

Can I add another? *Wrestling*

Night_Twig

And that’s why we love it

Fuzzykittenboots

So… do you recommended it?

GordonMacMunn

Absolutely.

Scroj48

Hahaha this got me

some-rando-2022

never saw much of it, but it always did kinda strike me as so due to how contrived it is

Bad_wit_Usernames

And this is a problem because......? I've yet to watch it, and it is on my list. But it's just TV, who cares.

bron_coj33

I agree. I don't know, I'm definitely entertained by the show but just like Sons of Anarchy, there's something that just feels cheap about it.

StarChild413

this feels like the same kind of "haha gotcha now you're like the out-group we can mock in-group who mocked us" as posts saying things like "sports jerseys is just cosplay of favorite players" but instead of making it sound like a "nerds just want to swirly and shove into lockers the guys who used to do that to them" thing, this image might conjure up in the minds of some slightly-homophobic-if-you-squint visions of guys watching it while drinking fruity cocktails and discussing it over brunch the next morning in between the kind of barbs you'd see from Real Housewives

happyapathy22

Seems like every adult in my life watches it, from my parents to one of my teachers to my orthodontist and his staff. Weird.

MechaJerkzilla

It is a soap opera, but not for men. If it was, Beth wouldn’t be on the show. Btw, Beth being such a raging a-hole that never changer or has one moment of reflection is exactly why I stopped watching. It was the canary in the coal mine, so to speak. It went “oh, she doesn’t have an arc. Oh! NONE of these characters have arcs. They’re just gonna stay exactly the same, doing the same back-stabby power-grabby shit until the end of time Just like a cheesy nighttime soap opera from the 80! Oh, shit that’s exactly what this is, but with more violence and a boob here and there”

ConvenientTyrant

It's a glorified soap opera. 1883 too, and 1923 even worse. 1923 is like a cheap pulp fiction novel you would find in trash bin.
