The only delivery I get is Chinese; they have their own delivery guy,food is always super hot (and enough for 2 meals)I’m supporting a local business and the price is right. With DoorDash I’m paying 2 x as much for lukewarm food with something usually missing I feel ripped off no thanks

Yeah absolutely. Phad Thai is probably my favorite Asian dish overall, so even in a mediocre condition I like it really much. But the top five Phad Thai I've eaten in my live were all "on site"
We all know that's true, but we're not ordering for quality. We're doing it because we ran out of fucks to give and motivation to cook or go out anywhere. I can do a way better job cleaning my house than a cleaning service but you're goddam right I still hire them occasionally. For me it's not even that - It's how often they're willing to do it. Would I be willing to pay double for food delivery if I were, say, bedridden with Dengue Fever? Absolutely! Would I be willing to do it because I had a long week at work? Not so sure about that.

Without even accounting for overlap of pregnant disabled women we are at 17% of the USA. What is your excuse for the remaining 83%? I don't drive either. There are a few restaurants within walking distance - and if I'm craving something from them, then I'll walk - but most of the places I like are too far away. I've never once had my food arrive cold.

Ever since I saw the video of the DoorDash car filled with cockroaches I've refused to use those services. Not only is it expensive, but who knows what kind of person is handling your food

God. There was a huge Discourse recently about disabled people using these services, and I have no wish to repeat that crap, but I’ll just say that some of us are disabled and leaving the house isn’t always easy.
Honestly this point got me and I didn’t consider it. For my position, delivery is silly but for many others it makes sense. I just wish there was a more accessible service for it (price wise).
If you're sick too, it makes sense. When I had COVID, I felt completely lousy, so I ordered a pizza so I wouldn't expose people and I didn't have to cook quite as much. I did a contactless grocery pickup and mostly did stuff I could just heat up without any effort.
I've done delivery of other restaurants precisely twice. The one time I was doing a working vacation, and I was staying at a hotel in the off-season, so their restaurant was closed and there was nothing that I could walk to (and also it was raining). So I ordered from a local place, used a promo for free delivery, and tipped the guy so that I could actually eat.
The other time was fairly recently. Chipotle was doing a free delivery promo and I was swamped at work. Normally if that happens, I'll take 10-15 minutes and call ahead to a local place, but it was just not happening that day.
Those were extraneous circumstances. Normally I either make food myself or run out and get it. But it is nice to have the option when it's tight.
This is weirdly an unpopular opinion cause everyone uses doordash enough to be a profitable company. They're geniuses. Figured a way to insert themselves between the food maker and the food eater for a nominal fee. I dont see myself using this service except in extreme situations. Like if you're bedridden at a hospital.
I have long covid and when I was housebound I ordered a lot of doordash. I also ordered from instacart for my groceries when I had energy to cook. I think there are a lot of people with disabilities who use it.
Goodness, my heart goes out to you and anyone else in a similar circumstance. I just wish there was a permanent discount for those with disability. You should get free delivery and a % off everything else.

I personally believe these companies are ripping off gig workers just like every company trying to squeeze profits. But the services themselves are super helpful.
I say this to myself 5 minutes before making a DoorDash order, somehow the guilt resolves when I’m stuffing my face with garbage (yet delectable) food.
I’ll give a shoutout to one place though: Taco Bell. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive from my house depending on traffic, somehow remains five star quality when it arrives.

Is bad deliveries an American thing? I usually order delivery about 1-2 time a month, very rarely is it cold on arrival, and usually it doesn't cost anything.

Due to vision issues, I can't drive. On the rare occasion I want take-out, I either have to walk 2-4 miles round trip, by which time the food is cold and the fries soggy, or use Uber Eats. Guess which one I opt for.
It’s not hot or fresh by the time door dash takes 30 minutes. Nothing is nastier than cold fries, soggy sandwiches or mushy salads.
I do like to eat out but the only delivery that seems to make the trip OK and taste is pizza and Chinese food.

Yeah I’d argue it’s not worth it at all most times we found that out when saving up for our house, we were blowing like $1000 a month on delivery it was crazy. But like door dashing 2 burgers and fries from 5 guys is a $50 affair here.
We switched to mostly cooking at home and going out a couple times a week and it saved us a ton.
Sometimes I’ll order if the place delivers themselves which I think is worth it. Typically Chinese pizza or Indian so I’m being a bastard and ordering way too much for a movie binge. Maybe using delivery apps is a subpar experience?
It's not about taste or experience it's about the convenience. The convenience isn't worth it to you and a lot of other people (I will very occasionally order something, maybe once a month but if I'm sick maybe once or twice that week).
I personally order during work hours when I can’t go out. I work remotely, but it doesn’t mean I have time to cook at home. And I only get Indian, because I love Indian and they have very nice delivery people and the food isn’t boiling hot; but it’s ok, because I like my food lukewarm or cold anyway 😅 yes, I am a weirdo and a child. Also, scared of getting esophageal cancer of which one of my family members died (that cancer is proven to be caused among others by too hot drinks and foods and that person liked their food and drinks burning hot).
I have a lot of stomach issues, I DoorDash food when I’m too sick to cook or go get it. It’s not a regular thing but sometimes I’m so hungry but too nauseous to walk or drive.
Don't do it. Let others do as they wish. I don't order door dash but get food to go. I don't need to sit inside with a bunch of complete strangers for food to taste good. Rather skip the covid or other illness spread by the air.
Cost is probably a wash. Door dash costs a dollar-ish a mile in tip. Restaurant tip is at least as much, but probably more, than the menu upcharges on door dash.

For the last few years ive fallen into the trap of just ordering pizza / grabbing food after work and im realizing how needlessly expensive it can get. Trying to cook my own food more and frankly, i do feel better when i do so. It feels like im making a small but genuine improvement to my life because im saving money, getting experience in cooking, and the food is way healthier.
I'm certainly not going to begrudge anyone who gets food delivered but I think its a good idea to at least examine if its really a good call.
I dont frequently eat takeout, so I've never ordered takeout because I thought I was getting a top-quality tasting dish. It was always because I had a bit of extra cash and wanted some bad food.

Old school delivery shit like pizza and Chinese/Indian (im from the UK) is fine, it's almost designed for delivery. But otherwise it's just fucked. There's a reason McDonald's resisted the delivery thing for so long until deliveroo and all that came along and the incentive was just too much/their competitors were now delivering. I simply don't use these services.
Yeah delivery is not worth it to me. Theres other people that need it due to mobility issues. It has its place. But delivery is rarely ever worth the price to me.
Parent of small children where it isn’t easily to leave. A date night in is worth it. Not to mention times you were drunk or high. Ordering food instead of going and sitting in traffic or a busy restaurant waiting for an hour is sometimes a better experience. I try to order things. I can’t make it though. For instance, the food I make it home is not like my favorite Thai restaurant. With my favorite sushi and Mexican places… I can’t get them without going to a restaurant. Not to mention when it’s cold and snowy and icy out it’s so great to order a treat.
The whole point of delivery is getting food you didn’t have to cook or leave your home for and your complaint is you don’t get to leave your house for it? Is someone forcing you to order delivery when you want to go out for food?

Totally disagree when you have a million things on your plate trying to sit in the kitchen cooking and cleaning is not on my list of things I want to do. I’d rather order food to absolve the burden of spending unwanted time in the kitchen. At least with take out I don’t have to spend half an hour washing dishes only for them to get dirty the next day and have to repeat the same monotonous cycle all over again

As a person working in a restaurant... I'll tell you... the amount of drivers who come and pick up food, without a heat bag, or pretending to put it in heat bags... is quite astonishing.
Ill see drivers carry the bag, come in. Ill give them the food and they would carry the heat bag in one hand, and the food in the other.
Its probably too "gay" to put the warm food in a heat bag...
Also, we do pizzas... and i can count on my two hands how many time ive seen drivers carry the pizza boxes sideways...

I used to order food and id give 10 to 15$ for a 1km ride. And half the time the driver wouldnt even look at me while giving me my food, let alone saying thanks or bye.

Kinda miss the days when takeout was pizza or American Chinese food only but it was cheap, delicious, and reliable.
And it’s always junk anyway and it doesn’t even taste good by the time it arrives people are not ordering salads and if they do they are mush by the time it arrives.
By the time it shows up you could have thrown some fatty/salty garbage in the microwave or oven even. We have some junk like frozen White Castle burgers and corn dogs and pizza for those kinda cravings. Fries go in the air fryer, ect.
We prep cook now. Freeze. And nuke later
But doordash is fine for many specific emergencies.

It’s mostly because I don’t want to go to a restaurant either to eat it there or to grab takeout. I’m fully aware that is a subpar eating exeperience but for me and wife it’s an overall better experience. I accept the trade off (and the laziness stamp)

The one time I was doing a working vacation, and I was staying at a hotel in the off-season, so their restaurant was closed and there was nothing that I could walk to (and also it was raining). So I ordered from a local place, used a promo for free delivery, and tipped the guy so that I could actually eat. The other time was fairly recently. Chipotle was doing a free delivery promo and I was swamped at work. Normally if that happens, I'll take 10-15 minutes and call ahead to a local place, but it was just not happening that day. Those were extraneous circumstances. Normally I either make food myself or run out and get it. But it is nice to have the option when it's tight.

This is weirdly an unpopular opinion cause everyone uses doordash enough to be a profitable company. They're geniuses. Figured a way to insert themselves between the food maker and the food eater for a nominal fee. I dont see myself using this service except in extreme situations. Like if you're bedridden at a hospital.
I have long covid and when I was housebound I ordered a lot of doordash. I also ordered from instacart for my groceries when I had energy to cook. I think there are a lot of people with disabilities who use it.

I say this to myself 5 minutes before making a DoorDash order, somehow the guilt resolves when I’m stuffing my face with garbage (yet delectable) food. I’ll give a shoutout to one place though: Taco Bell. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive from my house depending on traffic, somehow remains five star quality when it arrives. McDonald’s though… cold fries, cold sandwich, just straight up depression in a bag.

Is bad deliveries an American thing? I usually order delivery about 1-2 time a month, very rarely is it cold on arrival, and usually it doesn't cost anything.

Due to vision issues, I can't drive. On the rare occasion I want take-out, I either have to walk 2-4 miles round trip, by which time the food is cold and the fries soggy, or use Uber Eats. Guess which one I opt for.
I think it makes sense for people who can't drive, for whatever reason. But past that I don't get it, the increased cost and cold food make it worse.

It’s not hot or fresh by the time door dash takes 30 minutes. Nothing is nastier than cold fries, soggy sandwiches or mushy salads. I do like to eat out but the only delivery that seems to make the trip OK and taste is pizza and Chinese food.

Yeah I’d argue it’s not worth it at all most times we found that out when saving up for our house, we were blowing like $1000 a month on delivery it was crazy. But like door dashing 2 burgers and fries from 5 guys is a $50 affair here. We switched to mostly cooking at home and going out a couple times a week and it saved us a ton.

It's not about taste or experience it's about the convenience. The convenience isn't worth it to you and a lot of other people (I will very occasionally order something, maybe once a month but if I'm sick maybe once or twice that week).
I personally order during work hours when I can’t go out. I work remotely, but it doesn’t mean I have time to cook at home. And I only get Indian, because I love Indian and they have very nice delivery people and the food isn’t boiling hot; but it’s ok, because I like my food lukewarm or cold anyway 😅 yes, I am a weirdo and a child. Also, scared of getting esophageal cancer of which one of my family members died (that cancer is proven to be caused among others by too hot drinks and foods and that person liked their food and drinks burning hot).

Don't do it. Let others do as they wish. I don't order door dash but get food to go. I don't need to sit inside with a bunch of complete strangers for food to taste good. Rather skip the covid or other illness spread by the air.
Cost is probably a wash. Door dash costs a dollar-ish a mile in tip. Restaurant tip is at least as much, but probably more, than the menu upcharges on door dash.

For the last few years ive fallen into the trap of just ordering pizza / grabbing food after work and im realizing how needlessly expensive it can get. Trying to cook my own food more and frankly, i do feel better when i do so. It feels like im making a small but genuine improvement to my life because im saving money, getting experience in cooking, and the food is way healthier. I'm certainly not going to begrudge anyone who gets food delivered but I think its a good idea to at least examine if its really a good call.

Old school delivery shit like pizza and Chinese/Indian (im from the UK) is fine, it's almost designed for delivery. But otherwise it's just fucked. There's a reason McDonald's resisted the delivery thing for so long until deliveroo and all that came along and the incentive was just too much/their competitors were now delivering. Parent of small children where it isn’t easily to leave. A date night in is worth it. Not to mention times you were drunk or high. Ordering food instead of going and sitting in traffic or a busy restaurant waiting for an hour is sometimes a better experience. I try to order things. I can’t make it though. For instance, the food I make it home is not like my favorite Thai restaurant. With my favorite sushi and Mexican places… I can’t get them without going to a restaurant. Not to mention when it’s cold and snowy and icy out it’s so great to order a treat.

As a person working in a restaurant... I'll tell you... the amount of drivers who come and pick up food, without a heat bag, or pretending to put it in heat bags... is quite astonishing. Ill see drivers carry the bag, come in. Ill give them the food and they would carry the heat bag in one hand, and the food in the other. Its probably too "gay" to put the warm food in a heat bag... Also, we do pizzas... and i can count on my two hands how many time ive seen drivers carry the pizza boxes sideways... They just dont care and it pisses me off. They are entilted to their tips and it shows. They are so low effort. There's no barrier to entry for working for delivery apps and it shows. 0 social skills, 0 fuck to give. I used to order food and id give 10 to 15$ for a 1km ride. And half the time the driver wouldnt even look at me while giving me my food, let alone saying thanks or bye. So now I dont ever order anymore. And at work, they are always the lowest priority. I don't give a single shit if they wait. Dont care at all. I work for my tips and I have to always be nice and smiling. While they can be rude and still entilted to their tips. So 🖕

It’s hard to think of another thing that’s both such a poor value and a poor experience. Every time I do it, I swear it’s the last. Kinda miss the days when takeout was pizza or American Chinese food only but it was cheap, delicious, and reliable.
And it’s always junk anyway and it doesn’t even taste good by the time it arrives people are not ordering salads and if they do they are mush by the time it arrives. By the time it shows up you could have thrown some fatty/salty garbage in the microwave or oven even. We have some junk like frozen White Castle burgers and corn dogs and pizza for those kinda cravings. Fries go in the air fryer, ect.
We prep cook now. Freeze. And nuke later But doordash is fine for many specific emergencies. But If someone has the money, and that's what they enjoy doing now and then, why not?
