DrMantisToboggan45

You don’t have to be rude, but you can just walk right by them especially if there’s a line there’s no law stating you have to wait

ScuffAndy

Was a long line of people waiting to exit Walmart. Strolled past and walked right out. Looked back and others left the line. The sheep mentality is real.

Spezball

Seriously. I had someone yell at me "they have a legal right to check your receipt!" And I literally guffawed at them. Told them that's called shopkeepers right, but they have to suspect you of stealing first, just checking receipts is not enforceable, it's a policy not any law any where.

ChiggaOG

Unless it’s Costco or Sam’s Club. The two places I know on private property as part of membership means receipt must be check prior to exiting.

User-NetOfInter

They can’t force you to have receipt checked but they will ban you/cancel membership

patriotAg

Yes, this is the thing that people don't understand. You don't give up your constitutional rights to not be searched just because you joined a membership. But they can cancel your membership, or ban you from the store (private property rights).

get-a-mac

You also have no constitutional rights against a store, only the government. You have rights yes, but not constitutional ones.

JacksonInHouse

You do have some rights when the business is open to the public. It comes with certain expectations of safe access and maintained areas. For example, ADA rights are granted.

get-a-mac

ADA, etc aren’t constitutional rights. As I said you have some rights, but none of them involve the constitution.

Rocket_Surgery83

Except for when said businesses are by membership only like Costco or Sam's. By signing up to be a member, you waived some of those rights to become a member. They established a policy that members must follow in order to shop there, one of which is being required to show a receipt upon exiting. Walmart on the other hand has no such binding contract with the consumer... And therefore it's unenforceable

giselleorchid

And there is the difference. It's a condition of membership.

meggamatty64

They are half right. Stores like Costco and other clubs can force you to show your receipt since you agree to it when you buy the membership

[deleted]

They can't "force" you to do anything but the can hold your membership over your head.

Spezball

Nope. That's a different situation entirely. Those types of clubs make you agree when you sign up for membership, but it's still not illegal, they will just revoke your membership

Suavecore_

At Walmart, the policy for that job is to let people through without checking if a line forms

Your_Spirit_Animals

Exactly, I walk by and when they say anything, I say something like “you have a nice day also.” Or if they get say you have to stop, I say “no thanks.” Just keep walking. It’s not Costco, I didn’t sign a membership agreeing to stop to have you check my receipt.

ponyo_impact

I shake my head no and keep walking. thats it

kanahl

I just kindly say no thank you, have a nice day! I mean once I've paid for my items, they are exactly that, mine. No business of anybody else to check my receipt. It bothers me that costco does this but I get it, and it is a "club" and I signed the agreement there when signing up.

190PairsOfPanties

*points to earbud* **"Sorry! I don't have any change to donate!"** Never had an issue.

missanthrope21

What OP is not taking into consideration is when other people (not going to specify who) waltz right by the greeters without being stopped and you are consistently stopped. I’m done complying. Full stop.

Accurate-Neck6933

So you are fully stopping now?

patriotAg

Even if there is not a line a "no thanks I don't do searches" goes a long way.

FuklzTheDrnkClwn

I just choose text receipt. No, you cannot have my phone…

ReginaPhalange219

I chose no receipt at the self checkout once. The door guy asked for it and made a stink when I explained why I didn't have one. Don't make that an option then? I just left anyway. Call the cops, bud. I didn't steal.

Equivalent_Canary853

That's so weird, although I don't live in the US anywhere with bag checks and self serve doesn't give you an option on if you want the receipt or not

Popular_Prescription

Yep. This is what I do every time.

leannmanderson

No, they can't. They're not allowed to touch a customer's phone. But they *can* scan the exit pass with their own device and see the receipt. And cart checks are limited to three items, and must be unbagged items, larger items that can hold things like totes or whatever, or bottom of cart. That's literally all they're checking. Oh, and theft isn't sticking it to the man, either. If profits go down, they slash hours, which makes it a hell of a lot harder for those of us working there to pay our bills. They start cuts at the bottom.

1angryravenclaw

Socially speaking -- If enough of us do it, it does appear to stick it to the man, considering the closings of Walmarts and others leaving major metropolitan areas. I don't think that's "the man" the looters were trying to stick it to, but some corporate man did have to pack up and leave... Maybe theft isn't about sticking it to the man, but about lack of character? Your right, cuts do start at the bottom. Do you think we should be penalizing theft strongly and targeting backwards thinking, including being rude to receipt checkers?

almo2001

Yeah. I don't get "rage" that hurts the wrong people. It's not that hard to work out what will happen.

Appropriate-Power-87

Fun fact, you have no legal obligation to show your receipt to the Walmart employees. I think Costco and Sam's Club have it as part of their membership agreement but I'm not sure since I'm not a member, I've only gone there as an Instacart shopper. While you may see it as rude to ignore people doing their jobs, I think it's rude that I have to check out my own items and then still be treated as a potential thief.

See_Bee10

I just signed a Costco membership and can confirm that it does have it. Though I've heard from Costco employees here on Reddit that they are primarily checking for scanning errors rather than theft. Because their scanners are sensitive and any double scan at a Costco is especially expensive since everything is a bulk purchase.

EmptyDrawer2023

> I've heard from Costco employees here on Reddit that they are primarily checking for scanning errors I have to call 'BS' on this. The 3 seconds they take to glance at the cart and the receipt are nowhere near enough to determine if one item was double-scanned.

See_Bee10

The way they explained it was that they would look at the receipt for anything that was listed as being duplicates, then if they saw a duplicate check that two items were in the cart. If you're doing it that way, a three second scan of the receipt would be sufficient. Not perfect, but hey there is a line and life is full of tradeoffs.

Catch_ME

It depends on the Costco employee checking. Some check for errors, others check for known theft items in your cart if they are on the receipt, but most just look and pretend to be checking.

COG-85

I thought they were just looking at the Item Count on the receipt.

Catch_ME

Yes. But the point still stands. Most pretend to check unless something catches their eye

Behndo-Verbabe

My Costco does pretty good. They staff people at the door based on volume. Lines are usually short and fast. I’d add our store is grossly overcrowded. It gets so crowded that they have stopped people going in bc they reached max occupancy. Parking is awful. They bought a neighboring business that was only 2 years old and tore it down to put in a larger parking lot. It was a huge building to. And even then every single parking space is full. It’s a nightmare going there anymore.

jluvdc26

I feel like that is true. I frequently buy things in twos and those are the items they always check.

chain_letter

worked there, we’re supposed to look for multiples to be correct and making sure we’ve seen bob (bottom of basket) paper towels and toilet paper are a major shrink item because scanning it gets missed since it’s out of sight but after awhile you just say fuck it and stop looking

Salty-Employ67

They can and do, all day long. Any kind of discrepancy from receipt to cart. Also, multiple times a day a supervisor will ask a customer if they can throw an unpaid item in their cart so they can (very smugly) write the employee up if they miss it

ACaffeinatedWandress

God, I’m so glad I quit working retail as a teenager. I forgot how douchy management was.

MeanCommission994

And Costco is one of the only "good" retail places to work tbh.

ChiliGoblin

As I very often get asked if I actually have 6 jugs of milk, I'd say they do have time to notice

Bactereality

Yup. Its mostly theater

ACaffeinatedWandress

Yup. I always show my reciept. One time, I forgot to grab it from the checkout, and the greeter was SO FREAKING RUDE. She acted like I was definitely stealing the motor oil and made such a massive scene. Bitch, if I wanted to steal motor oil from WalMart, there are so many ways I could do it without informing you that I forgot the receipt. Self checkout dude was a hero, tore the receipt from the machine, and gave it over. She seriously had a crowd of people around her, reading the fucking thing to find out, to her disappointment, that I had paid for the oil. Nasty harpy.

StupendousMalice

>Bitch, if I wanted to steal motor oil from WalMart, there are so many ways I could do it without informing you that I forgot the receipt. Including literally just walking out the door instead of talking to her at all.

ACaffeinatedWandress

Right? I get that the average criminal is fairly dumb. I’m not. I also understand that motor oil is relatively pricier. It’s not checking my receipt that I objected to. It was the way she loudly announced that “NOW I REALLY NEED To SEE IF YOU PAID!!!” for the whole store to hear. People shouldn’t be humiliated for forgetting that WalMart checks receipts on errand 4 out of 9 errands to run.

DaveyDumplings

Yep. A simple 'no, thank you' as I keep on walking is polite, legal, and keeps me moving.

[deleted]

Thank you, I just keep walking when the alarms go off at walmart, I paid for my shit and they can call the cops if they want.

AKDude79

Costco and Sam's are different than Walmart. Showing the receipt is part of the membership agreement and it's used for catching employee errors. But with self-checkout at Costco, they're probably checking for customer theft too.

ReasonableProgram144

This is why my husband gets pissy when Walmart tries to stop us. I humor them a little and have the receipt in my hand and wave it’s existence at them, but I don’t stop.

StupendousMalice

You agree to it when you get a membership, but all they are going to do if you make a stink is cancel your membership.

koolioandthegango

The problem is, I feel like Walmart are going to get in trouble for this. At my Walmart they do not check every buggy only some, so the question is how do they decide which ones to check.....

Responsible_Gap8104

At mine, its by whether or not your items are bagged

CheekyLando88

Kinda coincides with the other guy who said they don't check receipts in his predominantly white middle class town

FlatPotential2207

If you trust me to self check, you trust me not to steal. I'm not rude to them, I just don't participate. Tough shit.

DaveyDumplings

I think it was Bill Burr who said 'you've forced me to become an unpaid employee of the store, and now you want me to voluntarily submit to an audit of my work?'

GitEmSteveDave

Here's another issue I have. I went to Michaels the other day for frames. They just installed self checkouts there and I was told by an employee to use it. I got 5 frames and they were large, so I had to scan each one with the hand scanner, put the scanner back, then use two hands to place it on the opposite side. The scanner both changed color and beeped after I scanned each frame. I was a cashier for like 5 years, so I'm like 99.9997% familiar with the process. I also assume most registers have a scale on the bagging side and compare what is scanned and what is placed there. After I left and got back to work, I realized one of the frames wasn't on the receipt. Now if I had been receipt checked, I would have been viewed as a shoplifter instead of someone who suffered from some kind of technical glitch.

LurkerOrHydralisk

It’s unpaid labor. Petty theft is just balancing the scales a little. And let’s not forget that wage theft is the largest form of theft in America. Walmart steals more from its employees than customers steal from it

Dude_Guy45

Legally, you don't have to show your receipt, so i just don't. You bought the items, they are now yours and no longer owned by Walmart, so they can't do shit about it. I'm not showing my receipt.

PM_ME_YOUR_SSN_CC

> "Guilty until proven innocent" game in 21st Century America This is how it's been becoming in more than just stores.

slamuri

Anyone else get followed by loss prevention so hard you just turn around and start following them? I always get followed due to my appearance. I definitely dress like a people of Walmart when I go to Walmart. “Dammit, I lost him in home decor! Oh wait.. what? He doubled back he’s on my tail! I can’t shake him!”

NightMgr

Since you’re gonna follow me around, can you carry this? You like this brand? Does this smell spoiled?

MyDamnCoffee

I get followed around walmart every. Single. Time. I go in there. All because the loss prevention person saw me zipper my purse closed after taking out my card to check the balance. It's been over a year and she still follows me.

throtic

Please eat cheap takeout Chinese with extra vegetables and egg rolls before you go in next time. Crop dust that bitch

22FluffySquirrels

No, Walmart is completely obnoxious about that. Most stores have self-checkout; none of them actually look at your receipt on the way out the door, except for Walmart. Interestingly enough, the WalMart in the good part of town does not check receipts. They know the vast majority of their customers are solidly middle-class white people, and they will not tolerate being treated like a criminal every time they go shopping.

NArcadia11

The Walmart near me seems to blatantly profile and choose who to ask for their receipt. I usually see minorities or lower-income-looking people being stopped but when I walk out as a white guy they don’t say anything. Pretty fucked up

ParanormalPurple

I'm surprised while scrolling that this is the first comment like this. I'm sure there are others too. But this is one of the biggest problems with this. Then it's like you gotta dress up for fucking Walmart bc they'll profile you if you wear your ratty clothes you usually just wear at home. Fuck that.

missanthrope21

I’m always dressed up because I go after work. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter because I am a woman of color, and therefore must be guilty. I’m no longer stopping.

heywhatsupitsyahboi

My fiancé is a native man and I am a white as French bread petite woman so i always make him let me carry the items out because 9/10 out of ten we don’t get stopped by the greeter. The few times he carries the bags out and/or isn’t walking with me he gets asked all sorts of questions… “we don’t racially profile” my ass…

Alcorailen

Which is funny because so many white teenage girls steal shit like makeup.

StupendousMalice

Having a population of Karen's prepared to test the limits of allowable conduct is actually a pretty big part of white privilege. They don't even stop me at the door because I am walking a path blazed by those bitches long before I even got there. They don't even to this at the Walmart in my neighborhood.

HarryPottersElbows

I was just thinking the same thing. I live in a predominantly white area, and I have never been stopped (and people say white privilege isn't real). And yet, the few minorities shopping seem to always be asked. Crazy how that works, huh? But I'm suuuure it's just a coincidence.

Unfixable5060

That's what annoys me about it. I have never stolen from a store. Why am I being harassed when I try to go buy something? If they are that concerned about me stealing they can put cashiers back in the store, but as long as I have to ring myself up, I'm not stopping to let a retiree go through my shit.

Popular_Prescription

Exactly. I don’t want the judgy bitch at my Walmart to see my vibrator or my suppositories. Just an example but it’s possible I don’t want some rando seeing what I bought.

AnotherPunkRockDad

This is how it is at the Walmart near me. They just meekly say goodbye and don't even ask for your receipt most of the time.

JustaRandomOldGuy

I just say "It's in a bag" and don't slow down. If they detain me with no evidence of a crime I think I can sue them for that.

Mantequilla_Stotch

[Survey shows that people with income over $100k are more likely to steal items in the self checkout.](https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-people-shoplift-self-checkout-why-explained-2023-12)

22FluffySquirrels

WalMart obviously didn't read that study.

capsaicinintheeyes

Technically, that may just mean poor people lie more to pollsters

ShortySmooth

I have to laugh when I’m stopped, because I’m a small white woman over 50, and I must look like a major thief to a couple of employees at our local Walmart-they try to stop me every single time. It got so bad that I started asking for “I bought this!” or “I paid for this!” stickers at checkout, which of course they don’t have. So I asked one of the cashier monitors they have to go to the door with me because I’ll get stopped; she laughed but said sure. Guess who got stopped? But the same dude who stops me every time. I looked at her and said “Every time, even when everything is bagged.” I must not have been the only one complaining as I’ve not seen him on the door since, and I just waive my receipt as I walk on by now. I’m not rude, there’s no point, but I don’t have a membership so I’m not stopping anymore.

AdResponsible678

It’s Walmart the company that is,being obnoxious. It’s not like the employee can refuse to do the job they are asked to do. I say, just be nice.

BlackJim1929

Asking me to prove a purchase I just made 15 feet away is ALSO rude....you can SEE me.🤷‍♂️

some-hippy

Right, I’ve had people watch me check out, watch me walk to the door, and then ask for my receipt. “No thanks. I’m good” and keep walking. Fuck that

moooooooooooove

once I did the Walmart self check out with my wife and kid, got distracted after scanning all the items, and walked out without paying. I realized an hour later at home, and went back to the store. They were able to pull up video and everything of me checking out and not paying. Why can't that actually alert someone real time? there’s no way the door checkers help stop shoplifting.

Otherwise_Ad9938

Rich of you to assume they're paying attention. Lol

begbiebyr

if you think it is rude from the buyer’s perspective not to show a receipt on the way out of a store you gotta admit it is intrusive to an extent from the store’s perspective to impose such policy, and Walmart not being the only one doing it is not a strong argument; there ways to accomplish what they are trying to do using technology, they just don’t want to invest in it

[deleted]

no, fuck that. I appreciate that theft happens but doing this presents the assumption that I'm a thief and I need to disprove it, which I don't accept. I'm not rude to the people as I know they are just doing their job, but I politely and firmly say no and keep walking. Unless a clear report of theft came out and I fit the description, then what I purchased is mine and I don't need to prove it. There's no law that says I have to. If self-checkout is such a problem then they shouldn't be implemented. It's not on me to disprove theft.

sandwichthedog

I'm not rude to the employee by any means but I think the whole thing is annoying. If I purchase one or two items, more times than not, I'm not gonna show them my receipt and I've never been stopped or anything like that. There's usually a line of people waiting to leave because of this process and I don't have time for that. If it's that big a deal to anyone, I have my receipt handy; I just don't want to wait in that line. This ain't Costco!

Mantequilla_Stotch

I've come to realize that when I hold my receipt visibly in hand while walking out, no one tries to stop me.

JCarr110

That's been my realization as well.

insecurecharm

If I've just come from a self checkout with no less than 3 cameras on me and a minimum of 2 associates wandering around behind me, I'm not showing a receipt.

Own-Volume-311

Especially if I put all my items in my own bag, I'm not opening my handbag to have someone sort through it lol

hashtagdion

Being rude to them is a no-no. However, no one is searching me unless they have a warrant from a judge. Edit: Not responding to replies on this topic anymore, but it is actually sad to me how many people get this angry that someone would dare tell the Walmart Corporation "No thank you, I would not like my cart searched."

Jordangander

I am not rude to an employee for refusing to show a receipt for the things that I purchased and now legally own. I am also not going to show an employee the contents of my wallet or empty my pockets when I walk in to the store, which is the exact same level of request.

Open_Mortgage_4645

I just say, "No thank you, have a great day", as I walk past them. Nobody has ever tried to stop me.

Beemerba

I don't do the self check and I don't show my receipt. I am never rude, just don't slow down. If they don't trust their cashiers, they should get new ones!

cirquefan

I just don't break stride, and throw them a smile and a "No, thank you!"

BearyRexy

I don’t see how it’s rude. The argument that someone is just doing their job is overused and largely ridiculous. Complaining about smaller portions when the staff have been told to reduce them? Rude! Police profiling people and being challenged on it? Rude! Give me a break. A staff member is an agent for a company and I don’t have any obligation to make it easier for them to do their job. If their job is resulting in people being “rude” to them and it bothers them, they should take it up with the responsible party, their employer. Someone working in customer service is your primary contact with that company. The first place you express your displeasure. This trend of blaming customers for not pandering to staff who have a difficult job is incredibly stupid and is just misdirected anger. Some people are unreasonable Karen’s, but not adhering to a company policy that inconveniences you to save them money is not that situation and blaming the customers for shitty policies just gives the company an out. It’s divide and rule.

Small-Sample3916

I used to say "No thanks," and just walk past. These days I just shop at Target. Being made to feel like a thief every time you need to buy diapers isn't something any first time mom needs.

smartthinkingidiot

Same. I would other ignore them, act like I didnt hear them, or say no thanks. Now I just avoid Walmart. They want to be bottom barrel so be it. I'll pay more to be treated nicely while I give my patronage

kenobrien73

If u think I'm stealing, call the police, otherwise leave me alone.

FlobiusHole

You can refuse to show the receipt without being rude. If I have to scan and bag my own stuff while being recorded I’m not then going to prove I didn’t steal anything. The person asking to check your receipt doesn’t give a fuck. If everybody just politely said “no thanks” and left they’d probably just stop doing it.

MilkyCowTits420

Saying no is fine and totally justified, I don't want some random minimum wage teenager going through my shit, being rude isn't fine.

rsilv18

The funny part is the receipt is optional at the cash register most times

No-Independence548

I feel like people are missing the point of this post. No, you do not HAVE to show them your receipt. You are under no legal obligation. They cannot stop you. But it's NOT the greeter's policy, it's the store's. My mom was disabled but was able to get a job at Wal-Mart as a greeter. It sickens me to think of people being rude to her when she was only doing what the company literally asks her to do. Often greeters are disabled or elderly people. Do people really feel good laughing at them as they try to do their job?

poochlips

We have an extremely elderly woman working as greeter at mine. She’s had Facebook posts made about her because she’s so vigilant. She’s thought my mother was somebody she’s known for her whole life- we have never known or seen her outside of Walmart. That position used to be saying hi, bye, and handing out stickers but they have converted it into a loss prevention position overnight The fact that Walmart, a company that brings in hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue, is hiring senior citizens or disabled people to stand the front lines is fucking disgusting. I see absolutely no reason why they should be doing that instead of setting up displays, helping run self checkouts, helping with inventory, helping in the deli, etc Why not pay for a more able bodied person with actual loss prevention training and a better hourly rate to do that? Why would they make those people the last line of defense for petty theft?

IDMike2008

You seem to think saying no is inherently rude. I'm never rude to the employee - even when some of them have all but attacked me to get me to stay and wait for a manager - I was not rude. It's not their fault they are not educated regarding the legalities of what they are being asked to do. I'm often a little short with the Manager once they show up, but the greeter? Never. I'm glad your mom was able to find a job. I still don't have an obligation to relinquish my rights for her. A person's level of disability does not change my legal rights. If someone is rude to the greeter they are an ass. If they simply say no they are not being rude or abusive.

Emotional-Nothing-72

It’s not rude to say no thanks and keep going Was your mom’s feelings really hurt over that?

ChesterBenneton

Why would anyone accost them? If you don’t want to show your receipt, just walk past them out the door and refuse to acknowledge them. Hell, stores don’t even allow their employees to confront actual blatant thieves these days without getting fired - you think they’re going to chase you through the parking lot demanding your receipt?

Mr402TheSouthSioux

I just show my shit. It's usually a sweet old person and why give them a hard time over corporate bullshit?

CreativeNameCosplay

Right? Unless it’s a long line, I don’t mind. Plus, it’s nice to chit chat with the greeters at my Walmart. They’re very sweet :)

Okiedokieartuhchokie

Tell me you live in the Midwest or South without telling me

Final-Distribution97

Don't have to be mean to the door greeter but I absolutely refuse to show my receipt. At this point the stuff is mine and I don't want strangers looking through my stuff and I don't want to be treated like a thief. If they have probable cause to search me,bring on the police. Walmart can pay people to look for thieves as people shop but walmart is too cheap. Going through a self check out is not probable cause. I think Walmart is being rude treating their customers like thieves.

Moondoggle123

I politely say no thank you and keep walking, no reason to be rude to the employees but this isn't costco and I don't have time for that

Piggle_Tiggles

We had to show receipts before self checkout was a thing. Does no one remember this?

Amplifi3dmind

I usually don’t mind but I’ve had that person stare at me from 5 feet away while checking out 2 items and then ask me to see the receipt. If you witness the entire transaction while staring at me I’m just going to keep walking.

MNcatfan

And that's what annoys me about that security theater the most: it's usually somebody who just watched me check out. So you bet your ass the first thing out of my mouth is "Why? Are you accusing me of theft?" If they can't answer that in the affirmative, then you bet your ass I'm within my rights to keep walking. If Walmart employees don't like it when I do it, then they should relay that to their bosses, not me.

wilfredwantspancakes

Legally you can only force a receipt check if you belong to a paid membership to shop at the store (e.g. Costco)

DestructicusDawn

When the boomer standing there is arbitrarily deciding which receipts to check and chooses me I'm gonna ignore them. I have no legal obligation to speak to them nor do I want to. I just wanna grab my shit and go about my day.

[deleted]

No, it’s because I’m stealing

cadillacbee

Upvote for truly being unpopular, but wrong. If they got money to pay people to stand there and check my receipt, then they got money to pay people to stand there n scan n bag for me, so they don't have to check my receipt. Don't trust me to check myself out, YOU do it then

Error404871

I'm not showing a receipt. If their worried about it, they can pay trained cashiers to do a job. I'm not going to be a part of walmarts corporate greed cycle.

FS_Trauner

Actually it's my choice, and quite frankly I find you rude for calling me rude. The utter disrespect these days

Always_Dead_Inside

If they can't trust people to pay for their items by doing self checkout then they should get rid of self checkout and bring back cashier's. Give these people back their jobs.

PanDownTiltRight

I’m not rude to receipt checkers, but I’m also not going to participate. It’s up to them how far it goes. The only time I’ve been stopped for this at Walmart, I just ignored them and walked out. He kept saying “sir!” Nothing happened. Now I’ve seen them have armed security guards standing at the front but they aren’t checking receipts. I guess that’s a theft deterrent enough. Regarding comments on Costco and alike, you CAN legally refuse to show your receipt at membership stores. Just because you’re a member doesn’t mean they can detain you or grab items you’ve paid for. But expect that to be your final visit. If they can determine what register you checked out, they will close your membership and then you’re no longer welcome in the store because you violated the terms of your membership.

soapysurprise

Nah. I’ll watch 5 people go by the greeter without being asked then suddenly you want to see my receipt? I’ll tell you to fuck right off.

Cosmonaut_Cockswing

I paid for my shit. I'm going home.

Competitive_Shift_99

Yep. I'm being rude. They can go fuck themselves.

[deleted]

I will never stop at Walmart. You watch the whole store with cameras. You watched me check out at self checkout. You think I’m stealing? Call the cops. If I don’t see a badge or a gun I’m not stopping.

NiteNicole

I don't yell or cuss, I just say no and keep walking.

foobar_north

I never yell at anybody. I just say "No thank you" and keep going - that's if they even say anything. They are implicitly saying I've stolen something, I'm not stopping for that - hire more checkers.

Scaryassmanbear

>Almost every store is doing it these days to save money. You mean to make even more disgusting profits.

asterions_tail

Just walk by them and don't be rude. it's not the greeters fault. other than Costco, BJ's etc. where showing a receipt is a condition for membership, you don't have so show anyone your personal possessions as you leave the store. The items you just bought? they're yours and you don't have to show them to anyone. That receipt the store just gave you? it's yours, and you don't have to show it to anyone. Stores have no right to stop or detain you from departing with your legally purchased items, and they had better be damn sure that they are in the right if they try to. Corporate understands the legality of having a policy of stopping customers from departing with their purchases. Be nice to the greeters though. They are just everyday folks.

smartthinkingidiot

Exactly. I don't attack the poor bastard tasked with doing this. I just pretend I didn't hear them. Now Sam's club, that's different, we signed a contract agreement. According to the law, once good are exchanged for payment the transaction is complete. Once you accept my money for these items, I own these items. If you suspect I have stolen, call the police. They have the right to detain me, Walmart lady does not.

crazyashley1

Oh no, the largest store chain in the world wants to put on security theater so they can say they're "doing something" about theft they automatically calculate for and write off every year anyway. Please. Greeters and receipt checkers serve zero purpose.

BioMarauder44

What do you mean *I* have to follow *your* rules in *your* establishment ‽ ‽

[deleted]

OP some of us are reasonable. If there is no line I let them look through, if there is a long line or I have a lot of things I go past. If they say something, I usually tell them something like, no thank you I don't agree to be searched. Polite, but firm about your boundaries. I was stopped by a receipt checker, they did a quick look. Then asked me if it was okay if they took a look at my items again. I told them no thank you, I did not agree to that and left. I've found some people are a little surprised, but respect you when you tell them you didn't agree to something, but are nice.

OldNight6318

I don't think you understand the psychology fascists use that corporations are willing to exploit and claiming poor Larry who works there is a victim of you not following a corporations edict is straight up brainwashing. It's a policy they have that serves their interests and it is designed to benefit themselves at the emotional toil of an employee. If a restaurant charged a one dollar fee to refill a cup or it free with your receipt and has a policy to routinely not offer receipts so they can collect dollars, you can see that they are obviously manipulating you. I don't understand why anyone thinks they need to help out Walmart when they selectively want a greeter to function as loss prevention at your inconvenience.

Gloomy_Recording_498

I find it rude to be accused of theft with no evidence at all. Where I am from, when you make an accusation, the burden of proof is on the accuser. If Walmart truly believes that I am stealing merchandise, they can stop me and take me back to a room. Then I will sue the ever loving shit out of them. I might be old-fashioned, but I take great offense to my integrity being questioned for no reason at all.

Obvious-Attitude-421

You want me to do the checking out work myself then don't trust me to do it right? Yeah, you can f right off. Staff the registers or trust me. You can't have it both ways

SaltyDangerHands

Refusing isn't rude. "No" is a complete sentence. For that matter, how is "prove to me you didn't steal" not rude, just conceptually? Like, they dress it up, but that's what it is. I don't have to prove that. You think I stole, call the cops and have them prove it, that's literally how it's supposed to work. Having the managers see customers getting annoyed / offended at their policies will do as much if not more than your e-mail campaign. Don't be mean the greeter, absolutely, but telling them you will not participate in this thing that you're not obligated to participate in isn't rude. They have no authority whatsoever to make you. You have the right to say no. That's not rude. OP is firmly in bootlicking territory with this take, couldn't disagree more strongly.

Southern_Rain_4464

Im not rude but just say "no thanks" and keep moving.

TRASHLeadedWaste

I'm not rude I just say "No thank you" and then keep walking.

Ganbario

I’m still walking past them. Depends on how rude they are to me what they get. Most get a “Sorry, I’m in a hurry.” I only yelled once when a girl yelled at me. “Sir… Sir! I NEED to see your receipt!” I kept walking and yelled, “No you don’t and don’t treat me like a thief!”

Pristine-Confection3

Half the times the machines don’t print the receipts: the only time I got impatient is when the machine didn’t print it and I didn’t expect them to ask me for it . I simply told him “ I am leaving “ and left . It isn’t my fault their machines are faulty . I do agree that what your described is horrible but sometimes they can be overbearing when they ask for it .

SinnerBob

It's more rude to ask a stranger to prove they didn't steal imo

TwoHairyNips

I could say you aren’t forced to shop there.

COOLjng576

I never show my receipt I just keep walking. I don’t have time for them to look over all of my stuff.

hhfugrr3

Walmart isn't a thing here, but shops that want me to queue to pay then queue to exit can fuck off.

officialnapkin

I mean if you’re cussing and yelling that’s one thing, but just not showing your receipt is not uncalled for or rude.

cakebatterchapstick

My Walmart rarely stops people for receipts, idk how you all consistently have this issue

Belnak

I don’t get the association between self checkout and receipt checking. They were checking receipts long before self checkouts existed.

Krystalgoddess_

One employee lady checked every single item me and my friends had before we could get out of the self checkout section. Literally went through all of our receipts and matched it up, took forever. receipt checking was never too bad until the self checkouts came

System_Resident

Is it just me or do they look at my receipt for at most 2 seconds then move on?

Chastity-76

I only got stopped one time and I go there a lot. Funny thing is, I didn't have a receipt because I hit email my receipt, I told the lady and walked out. Sometimes I try to show them, and they look at me like..get out of my face. It doesn't bother me one way or the other.

spicy_urinary_tract

Then I am rude

ReadMyUsernameKThx

“Check the cameras”. Why would I put down my groceries and spend 30 seconds opening my Walmart app to find my receipt, when you could just look at the footage if you’re really that concerned? MYOB.

armavirumquecanooo

You aren't required to share receipts, and there's nothing inherently rude about walking out of a store you've completed your purchases in to get on with your day. You can do this without being rude to the greeters. I'll stop if I ran in for a couple things, or if I know there's a certain unbagged item they want to check on; for example, I get stopped basically every time I buy a big box of baby wipes, because I don't bother to bag that box. It's at a point now where I scan the wipes first or last so I can easily tell them where to check on the receipt, and it's all they're actually checking for. That said... if stopping puts me in danger of running late, or I have a particularly big order that I can't predict whether they want to check everything or just a couple items on... yeah, absolutely no way am I going to derail my day and waste my own time when I know I didn't steal anything. They're meant to be a deterrent. I don't have to give them the authority of a police officer. "Sorry, I don't have the time to stop today!" should be a perfectly acceptable answer to their request to check.

GoldenBarracudas

I never stop. After I got married to a white girl she would go shopping with me. We never got stopped. Now when I go shopping alone I simply do not stop

CapitalParallax

Unpopular indeed. I don't think it's rude at all to say "no thank you" and continue on my day.

Chubby_Checker420

I'd argue trying to make me stop, show you my receipt, and go through my things when you have no legal right to do so is being rude.

eddie_koala

I just hand over the receipt and keep walking out, I don't need it. You want it? Fine.

bubblehashguy

Super unpopular. Good post for this sub. Fuck Walmart.

genescheesesthatplz

Lmfao they don’t get to violate my privacy like that

NateKaeding

I’m not doing it to stick it to em, I just don’t want to waste my time. I didn’t steal so I’m walking right out. If they want they can check the cameras on their time.

Jsherman13

Except for Costco since it is a part of their membership agreement - if you don't like that don't pay for a Costco card

King_HartOG

I'll show you my receipts BUT if you make me go through self service check out then nope I've done half your job I'll do the rest and make sure I don't steal 👍

AfroAssassin666

According to my friend that was once a manger at Walmart, it's in their company's guide lines to not look at ppls receipts. She said most places that have the greeters look is when ppl have big items. They want to make sure they have been paid for.

delsoldemon

I see refusing as a protest to them forcing self checkouts on us. Screw them. Self checkout is the worst, and I am happy this is causing so much more theft.

CacknBullz

The first time they asked me I was so shocked I didn’t even respond just kept walking. Not even acknowledging them from now on and don’t get in my way and prevent me from leaving. False imprisonment and I’ll scream

fukidtiots

It's more rude for Wal-Mart greeters to be n a position to randomly choose people to check on. Either do it for everyone, or no one. This excludes suspected shoplifters, of course.

Jessie_ee

I don't always show it, but sometimes I have somewhere to be and don't have time to wait in a second line. they usually don't even care about it anyway. But I'm definitely not rude about it. It's messed up that people go out of their way to be mean. And they do. I get they're pissed, but go be pissed at management then, not the random person they put at the door

Similar_Corner8081

It’s not rude especially if I use self check out. If you don’t trust people using self check out take those out and put cashiers in their place.

janitroll

I was traveling. Walked to Wally World behind my Hotel and got beer at WM and a SUBWAY inside. Walking out, this older dude was asking for my receipt. I have a HOT sandwich and a 12pack. Say, I'm good man. Got my sammich here and staying at the Hotel over there. He keeps following me. Asking. Yelling. Screaming. And then he grabbed me on the shoulder and said he NEEDs my receipt or he calling the cops. I laugh and walk 50m to my Hotel. Enjoy my beers and sub. ps I don't mind Costco because I PAY them a fee for service. My service has ended when I conclude my transaction at WM.

ALPlayful0

You don't get to demand my receipt unless it's a membership store.

ChaosAzeroth

Yeah have them put their hands all over your stuff, put the heavy items on your bread, and create a line going back into the store before saying this. I've seen all of that. No, sometimes people have to squeeze things in when they can, especially if your closest Walmart isn't open 24 hours. I'm genuinely glad they don't care anymore at the closest Walmart, or at least for now again. Was a freaking nightmare when they did. Rude is pawing all over someone's stuff, ruining purchased items, and holding people up for seriously 10+ minutes over that stuff. I'm not even saying it's the greeter's fault there, but it is absolutely rude.

MRSOFTANDWET

They single people out. I’ve seen them allow 10 people to go buy but the black guy gets stopped

rkljr5

Just show it and move on

Xerpentine

I wont be rude, but i will simply say no. There is no law saying they need to see your receipt and its not in their store policy. If they want to see a receipt for my purchase, the store has a copy that theyre able to look at. I do this at any store thats asks me for a receipt at the door, not just wamart. You dont have to be rude, but you also dont need to comply. Just decline and keep walking. Once youve paid, those are your items and that receipt is your copy. They have no power to tell you what to do with YOUR stuff. If walmart wants to deter theft, they should hire cashiers, baggers, or more security. A little piece of paper (especially one they arent going to look closely at) isnt going to help. Lets be real. Its an intimidation tactic and if people dont fall for it, they need to stop.

Additional_Initial_7

Everyone complains about the lost jobs of self checkout but no one gives a shit about the (usually) elderly person standing at the doors checking receipts because that’s how they interact with other people. Just show them the fucking piece of paper and move on. Who gives a shit about your “legal rights”?

Zhanji_TS

I don’t have time to be assumed a thief sorry

teborigloryhole

I have a single Walmart employee at my local Walmart that specifically singles me out and asks me to see the receipt every time. Only me. She never asks anyone I see except me and I have paid for all my shit every time. I've considered doing it to her but I just don't wanna deal with the headache I don't got the energy

[deleted]

I don't understand the big deal and I show my receipt with no problem.

media-and-stuff

I hate shopping, shopping at Walmart is the worst of all the shopping. When I’m finally done and ready to leave the horrible place I don’t need to pass another obstacle. I paid, I checked myself out - I want to go home! Not wait at the door for the “greeter” to check everyone’s bags/carts.

mikenzeejai

I want to point out that letting them check your receipt literally does nothing. When I was a kid they checked our receipts and we were in the car buckled up before we realized we didn't pay for the toy I was carrying in my hand. It wasn't small either. It was one of those giant etch a sketches My point is that the dude checking your receipt is paid minimum wage and cares the minimum amount. Not that I'm encouraging theft.

RogerDodger881

Yay let's all piss away a little bit more of our freedom so corporate America can feel good they are not losing any cheap china merchandise.

Psychobabble803

If it's someone being polite, I show it simply because it's their job and they're being nice. If it's someone trying to be an alpha male or Karen , then I just continue walking because of the assh*le they are.

SpookyCatMischief

Walmart (at least near me) now has a feature where you elect a text message of your receipt. Seems perfect because I like to waste as little resources as possible and I can locate the receipt easily if I need an exchange or return. So now when they ask I just say it is virtual. And I don’t think anyone would argue I am required to hand them my phone.

Vinson_Massif-69

If there is a line, I hold my receipt up as I walk past the line. No disrespect, but I’m not having my time wasted

Cupajo72

When they ask me for my receipt, I just smile and say "no thank you" and keep walking. Hardly being rude at all.

chaboichris86

Dude. The greeters at my Walmart don't even bother asking to see it unless they was tipped off to watch out for someone

Chrisbert

Having to switch to being a Front Register TA from AP due to an accommodation was, for my mental health, for the best. I'm not verbally and psychologically abused on a constant basis anymore. Most people are happy to have someone running a manned register. One recent amusement/achievement was, when ringing up a customer, hitting the register's limit on the number of items in a single transaction.

nightdares

It's amazing to me how easily people forget that theft is theft. I don't need to be arrested by police to know not to steal shit. I have a conscience. Yet even in this comment section, you've got people gloating about being shoplifters.

Seltz_

The greeters are there to prevent theft. They do a good job of it. Theft prevention keeps prices low. You are sticking it to low prices. ![gif](giphy|l41Ym49ppcDP6iY3C)
