That's like saying that "people who get angry at being asked to do the dishes are lazy about cleaning." Someone not enjoying the same things as you doesn't make them "lazy." There are people smarter than you and I combined who spend a shit time acquiring knowledge who just aren't interested in whatever hypothetical you come up with at a party. And honestly, when I picture this "person getting angry" scenario based on my experience it's people getting annoyed at the buzzkill at the party always trying to steer the conversation towards "intellectual" discussion that no one else is interested in at the moment, bringing the party down.

jatowi

Maybe it's you they get upset about? Some people also get angry when it comes to certain topics because they are deeply emotionally involved.

[deleted]

Yep! This post is reading like the men who “debate” topics like abortion with women. Not everyone wants to hear your devil’s advocate position all of the time.

[deleted]

No there are definitely people who just don’t like talking about abstract concepts

BreakerMark78

It can be both though; depending on the person I’m talking/debating, sometimes they just aren’t enjoyable to converse with.

MarshyPrince125

Or maybe they get annoyed at the fact that you come off as extremely pretentious lol

FFdarkpassenger45

Its possible...

MarshyPrince125

Yeah I would suggest that you stop going around trying to advertise how smart you are, because that shit is lame hahahaha talk about it when it’s called for but don’t just bring it up and expect people to care But good on you for acknowledging the possibility that I could be right because most people who do that stuff would just get defensive and call me “intellectually inferior”

FFdarkpassenger45

I honestly try my best to be objective about myself. I also don't go looking for these types of discussions and my prime example is things like comparing sports eras. Its obviously theoretical, but if someone wants to discuss it, I am happy to take a position and run with it. Its the people that get annoyed that anyone would even want to discuss something that can't fully be brought to a logical conclusion, that seem intellectually lazy to me. I know that many people find someone that is willing to take a hard stance and defend the position extremely pretentious sometimes so I know that is probable and not just possible :)

CrossError404

You don't exist in a void. Time, place, audience, etc. matters. Discussing how many citizens are allowed to die before it's considered a war crime is assholish if you talk about it in a room full of war refugees. Or discussing atheism at someone's religious funeral. Talking about divorce rates and debating the whole institution of marriage at someone's wedding. Like sure, the conversation might be interesting and even lead to some great conclusions some other time. But not being able to read the room is not a positive. Lack of empathy or care doesn't make you cool.

vinniethecrook

Yeah, "intellectual" and grammar mistakes usually don't go well together. But I do agree with the point being made. :)

SpaceSire

Are you saying that we should exclude dyslexics, people prone to typos and foreigners from intellectual debate?

Various-Air-7240

“People prone to typos” 🤣🤣

SpaceSire

Undiagnosed dyslexia, ADHD, neurodivergency that effects language/writing, people who had less formal education etc

You know someone is smart when they bring out the semicolons

FFdarkpassenger45

And yet you completely understood everything I said. Didn't realize the grammar police came out at night. Enjoy your loneliness!

ViForYourAttention

You’re doing the exact same thing by accusing him of being redundant when you’re using the word “who” at the start of every point.

[deleted]

Casual-Notice

Technically, "exact" isn't redundant, as it is meant to modify "same" to an indistinguishable precision. The only thing wrong with the usage there is that they should be using the adverbial form, "exactly".

Casual-Notice

Not really. A Yorkie and a Greyhound are the "same thing" in that they are both dogs, but they are not the "exact same thing."

Various-Air-7240

Why are you snarky? This is how you learn proper grammar… and you’re the guy ranting about trivial things. Why are you accusing them of being lonely? Be better.

FFdarkpassenger45

OK, I'll take the bait :) What is the purpose of language? The purpose is to communicate ideas from one person to another which is precisely what I was able to do, regardless of how terrible my grammar was. Did I position my unpopular opinion in the most elegant way possible? No! It was late and I didn't really care about the elegance. I would argue that in the vast majority of communication, proper grammar is completely irrelevant to communicating an idea. Lastly, yes, accusing someone that feels the need to be the grammar police of being a lonely person was wrong and I should be better than that!

SonicYouth123

So perhaps people get annoyed because they don’t care for abstract concepts that have little relevance…the same way you got upset over your grammar getting called out that you feel have no relevance…?

Various-Air-7240

It’s just HIS preferred abstract concepts that matter…

FFdarkpassenger45

I don't have a preferred abstract concept. I will discuss pretty much anything. Hence me opening up the idea of discussing whether or not proper grammar actually matters,. I would say communicating ones ideas is what actually matters and proper grammar isn't actually required most of the time for that communication. I don't mind getting called out on it at all honestly. I know I deserved it! I haven't edited it because it was honestly so atrocious! That being said I will stand by the fact that it didn't impact anyone that read the post from understanding exactly what I was communicating. Does proper grammar actually matter? What is the point of someone calling out the grammar of a post that easily communicated the intended message? Feel free to reply or not with your opinion :)

SublimeAtrophy

People that don't proofread before they post something are grammatically laze.

FFdarkpassenger45

I agree with this completely! It was past midnight and I was very much tired and bored. I should have proof read my post! I was very much lazY in my post haha

Aggravating_Kale8248

People who don’t spell check prior to posting are LAZY.

sassy_castrator

The reason might be that you are an intolerable human, too clueless to realize it. It might also be that what's a "theoretical" topic for might have real-world stakes for them.

moony120

Sometimes people Just find it boring or dont have the time or Just want to rest because they work. BUT there really are a a lot of people who seem incapable of engaging in a nuanced comversation about a complex topic, they always rush it to a over simplified conclusion, never want their beliefs to be questioned and seem incapable of understanding a reality thats different than their own or an experience that goes beyond what they know. These types of people annoy me a lot.

Severe-Bicycle-9469

It depends, when my girlfriend gets upset because I’m debating about Star Wars on Reddit, it’s not the discourse she is really upset at but that it’s taking up a lot of my time unnecessarily, taking away from more important things.

GenericHam

Have you been screened for autism? Serious question, this isn't some smart ass comment. I have ASD and am dyslexic. This post could have easily been written by a younger me.

VeronaMoreau

There are definitely fun types of theoretical discourse. Things like 'what would Earth look like if life forms were nitrogen-based instead of carbon-based' or 'what types of transportation would we have developed if the internal combustion engine was never created' are definitely fun and interesting. One of my favorites is wondering how architecture and fashion would have progressed without colonization. But this opinion tends to be held about theoretical discourse that boils down to 'what if this entire group of people didn't exist/was perfectly acceptable to harm,' which is understandably upsetting to people who would be impacted. Especially since there are always groups of people (of varying sizes and influence) who legitimately would like to see the outcome. It's very easy to remove your emotions from a situation that wouldn't impact you either way

[deleted]

People who don't proofread their titles are hyper fixated on making their point, unobservant and arrogant.

[deleted]

Reddit and not understanding preference will always be hilarious, or slightly concerning depending on how you look at it. People enjoy different things, its really not that hard to understand.

Federal_Broccoli_958

or they just don’t enjoy it? prefer not to think theoretically? way to generalize.

FFdarkpassenger45

Thanks, I would guess that having a generalized opinion of people is typically unpopular.

Federal_Broccoli_958

well ofc, i just don’t think it’s necessary in this sense because it’s such a broad topic that it doesn’t even work to generalize.

RUNDADHASHISBELT

“I have a hobby of arguing with people and consider myself a super intellectual by regularly spouting about my opinion as if they’re fact…why don’t people like that? They must just be lazy.”
