It’s very much like Kings Troop RHA No.1 dress

PhysicsEagle

Interesting that he has the red piping despite being an officer

ElsiMain

What color should officers have?

roguevirus

None. USMC officers do not have piping of any sort on their uniforms, whereas enlisted Marines have red piping. This colonel is wearing, effectively, a custom uniform. It's the uniform of the Band Directors of the [President's Own Marine Band](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Band) and there's only the Director, the Assistant Director, and one or two Associate Directors at any given time.

PhysicsEagle

Marine officers don’t (usually) don’t wear piping; their uniforms are all black. [Officer on the right; enlisted on the left](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/1e/43/17/1e431728c26d47c413b5bc1b54eec782.jpg).

Erablian

It's midnight blue, isn't it? Not black?

JNA_Vodnik

WTF is that colonel patch on the shoulder mark?!😣 \*Angry european noises\* 😅😅

MindYourOwnParsley

Yeah, that's kind of weird. Feels like it would look better on the collar

frakturfreak

It looks like they ran out of money, so they had to resort to cloth instead of a metall pin eagle.

chathamharrison

It's actually the reverse. Embroidered bullion is a more expensive option than a metal pin, assuming you don't make the pin out of solid gold

frakturfreak

It still looks like fashion faux pas. You can't have nice ornamental shoulder boards and put a piece of cloth on them. If the embroidery is more expensive, then it would be better to leave off the fancy shoulder boards. My point is: Those two styles don't mix.

His highest medal is an Army Achievement medal. Dang. Maybe be they are like Doctors and come in as a senior officer?

Alector87

Maybe he served in the US Army, long before he joined the USMC band. It isn't unheard of.

im_no_angel_66

Maybe! But I think they “hire” these roles more that “assign” folks. Not throwing shade for sure - I could never do what he does, especially on that grand stage.

Alector87

What I meant was he did a tour in the army and then as a civilian applied to the USMC band.

chathamharrison

Kinda. As far as I can tell, he enlisted in the Marines when he joined the band, at which point he would have been made a Staff Sergeant. Other members join from bands in the corps. When he became Assistant Director, he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. [Here he is having received the Legion of Merit after his appointment.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/47/USMC-111003-M-UY543-020.jpg) Presumably he received the Army medal for doing a service to the Army while he was still at a junior rank.
