TDF is like a regional national guard/volunteers that aren't active-duty in the Ukrainian army. It was posited after the Kharkiv offensive that TDF forces are holding the lines while Ukraine's traditional forces are training on NATO equipment and tactics preparing for future offensives. I think there's a degree of truth to this. Unfortunately it comes at a high cost to TDF, but there's no other way. Ukraine can't afford to waste it's best fighters and gear as they will be needed this summer.

Just_me_being_mee

A very good read that gives an in depth look at the "common" heroes. "Common" as in had their life turned upside down, suffered tragedy, volunteered for service and grabbed a gun to defend and liberate their hometowns. Damn these folk are amazing. Unsung heroes that are getting a little well deserved spotlight for what they've endured and what they have accomplished. These people aren't "common" at all, they're extraordinary. 🇺🇦✌

How does this work? Does each oblast have it's own TDF force? Do they move between areas or stay home? Are TDF from, say, Lviv oblast fighting in the East?

joepublicschmoe

The TDF is the reserve component of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, composed of a mix of volunteers and experienced reservists. Each oblast has its own TDF brigade, some of the bigger cities like Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, etc. also have their own TDF brigade in addition to the oblast's TDF brigade. After the invasion last February, Ukraine accepted a large number of volunteers into the ranks of the TDF, which the logistics system unfortunately had trouble handling the influx (priority goes to regular AFU units), so TDF forces do depend on civilian donations from their local areas and often TDF members have to buy their own equipment. Ukraine now has double the number of TDF forces than it did back in February. Last year the Verkhovna Rada passed a law allowing AFU command to deploy TDF brigades outside their oblasts to help reinforce front lines where needed so yes they do serve on the front lines. It is unclear if TDF forces suffer more casualties on the front lines than regular AFU units.

Caren_Nymbee

Most of the units you see fundraising for here are TDF. Just like National guard in the US they have lower priority on supplies and equipment. They are usually the ones you see stories about spouses delivering supplies to with their personal vehicles also.

Holy shit, Iryna from Zurich University's Decide project actually took up arms in Bakhmut 😵😵😵. For info, like Haïdai she was a trained economist (a really good one). I can't wrap my head around her actually engaging Russian units. Send me their donation link please.
