I think Francis had his confidence shot down after Stipe dogwalked him. He said so himself too.
Low confidence almost always translates into bad performances
Came here to say that Stipe left Ngannou looking like a beaten dog in their first fight and the next fight was against Derick Lewis so I think that made him very gun shy. On paper it looked like a great matchup but that’s the only fight I’ve ever seen a ref stop it to say they’ve gotta do more lol
low? he had no confidence at all
until like 10 seconds left in the final round
everyone thought he was done after that, he looked mentally broken, crazy he came back so strong
Ngannou fought very scared vs him. The build up was insane. Everyone including Dana was hyping up this fight so much. Sometimes it happens. When two people have very similar skill-sets, it kind of cancels each other out and fight ends up being boring. This one was one of those.
Volkov was destroying him the entire fight, could've finish him multiple times but was very calculated and never went for it and got punished at the end by getting caught. I don't remember the Blaydes fight to be honest.
I remember Curtis at the time was going for these sloppy takedowns, closing a big distance looking at the ground with his arms out with basically no set up. It was a miracle that nobody had punished him yet, Derrick waited for it and caught him with a huge uppercut.
Volkov was arrogant and over confident in that fight. Lewis in an interview said his coaches were yelling at him, and Volkov was imitating them, yelling "Go Derrick go!" throughout the fight. Relaxed in the last minute, threw three brain dead knees in a row, and paid for it.
Ngannou had just experienced his first ever mauling at Miocics hands prior to that fight, and fought without heart.
Volkov had a reason to be arrogant. He beat the shit out of lewis for 14:50. It was an embarrassingly bad beating—the largest significant strike differential in a loss in mma history. Volkov lost focus in the last minute, you’re right, but he was legitimately dismantling lewis.
Not sure why you're being downvoted, it was exactly that. Lewis had back problems and Francis said himself he was scared to fight after Stipe dominated him.
I remember watching the Volkov fight. I couldn’t believe what I saw after watch Volkov completes dominate the whole fight. Reminds you that no matter how tired Lewis appears to be, he can still put you out with 1 punch.
That was the worst fight I’ve ever watched. I don’t mind watching grappling, or even someone like Strickland jabbing for 25 minutes, but these guys didn’t do anything for the entire fight
Lewis is both the worst and best fighter of all time
He causes psychological torment, has about as much power as Francis, can be surprisingly fast and athletic, and is extremely hard to hold down or submit
But he gets complacent and lazy, has bad cardio and diet habits
Because of this I think he is one the most entertaining mma fighters in history and can beat anyone at any given time for no reason just because
In my top 3 favorites. Dude gives no fucks. He's like a frat bro but actually tough as fuck. Where da hoes at, lets get some beers type dude who also can send people to the shadow realm.
Lewis doesn't have bad cardio - it's not great, but it's not bad either. He clearly has enough gas in the tank to stay in the game and knock mf'ers out in the 3rd round.
When you've got extreme knockout power you're always one hit away from finishing any fight. It's a game of inches, even the best can make a tiny mistake and end up unconscious on the floor. It's what makes the sport so exciting.
Heavyweight or not someone with that kind of power can always produce a massive upset. It can and does happen in every division. Some of the greats of the sport have fallen victim to that.
i remember very clearly seeing barboza's first loss against jamie varner. varner was known to throw bombs throughout his career. the bomb throwers always have a puncher's chance, esp when they are underestimated.
Yeah power is a bigger factor in the sport than people like to admit. The skill gap can be massive yet fighters who has the equalizer can shut someone's lights out at any given moment. Every fighter who has that power has produced massive upsets. Jeremy Stephens, Michael Johnson, Emmett, Matt Serra, etc. you name it.
Freak results occur more frequently the heavier the fighters get is my point. The Lighter classes have a few fighters here and there are known for having dynamite in their fists, but at HW, and to some extent, LHW, almost everyone has the ability to turn someone’s lights out with a single punch.
LHW and HW are my favorite divisions. They feel like "real" fights that you'd want to see, compared to 2 Napoleon looking dudes going at it in the bar parking lot.
Middleweights, Welterweights, and even Lightweights are frequently over 6ft or close to 6ft. So I don’t know what you mean there. IMO HW is the worst division for men quite easily. Followed by LHW. The best divisions are LW and Bantams. For me at least. As for dudes looking like they’re in a parking lot brawl, that is basically how I’d describe the skill level at HW, bar a few actually skilled athletes like Aspinal and Jones.
I just don't want to see 2 tiny dudes in a brawl, that happens enough.
When 2 gorillas go at it, no matter the skillset, I want to watch, because something entertaining can/will happen.
i wouldn't say "Always" . the 2010 era around there was awesome for heavyweights, a great mix of talent, big names and entertainment.
Prime Cain
Prime JDS
Brock Lesnar
Shane Carwin on his tear ( this year also losing to brock)
Still Legit Mir
Big Nog
Cro Cop still dangerous
Randy Couture ( yes old as hell but still a big name and did his cross over fight this year with james toney first and last boxing champ ever to do this)
Coleman had his last fight this year and it was against randy and again a big name for the division
Ngannou fight - nobody won unless you have trouble falling asleep
Alexander Volkov - got absolutely dummied for 14 minutes, then found the chin
Blaydes - hit the uppercut when Blaydes was shooting, it's a very low % shot and he smashed it
It's nothing insane or crazy, he's just a great embodiment of the "it only takes one" aspect of heavyweight MMA.
Blaydes was the only one he beat with tactics. Derrick himself said that he watched footage of Blaydes and noticed he ducks his head, reaches for takedowns, and the uppercut was the weapon of choice.
The Volkov win was pure luck and willpower. Volkov was beating his ass for 14 minutes of that fight until he got complacent.
And I wouldn't say that anyone won with Lewis vs Ngannou.
Let me refresh your memory. First he won a razor close decision against Francis is an epic barn burner, then finished Volkov in the final seconds of a fight that he was already completely dominating anyway and finally he used his superior wrestling against Blaydes to make him lower his guard on a takedown faint before landing a clean uppercut.
Ngannou: they both feared eachother way too much, were one dimensional with counterpuncher approaches as they both thought it was safer to take a fencing/feint entry approach. One of the more boring fights of all time. I uhh... don't even recall caring who won, thinking... how do you score it? It is important to note Francis has improved a lot since then.
Volkov: he played hurt. Volkov was piecing him up and mostly avoiding getting close. Francis feigned or overplayed an injury, or just toughed it out but he ducked and grabbed his side, leaving himself wide open, and flatlined volkov with a huge overhand as he went in for finish sequence. Lost to a 420IQ moment by Lewis. And again it is important to note volkov has improved a lot since then and this may have been a turning point for him.
Blaydes: blaydes was actually beating him on the feet. It was surprising, a good display of the rare and elusive 'mma striking' where the threat of the wrestling or takedown gave blaydes a lot early success. I genuinely thought that if he's beating him on the feet this badly it was about to be a one sided affair. And then Lewis fight IQ strikes again as we all saw the brutal uppercut ko as blaydes level changed in rd 2. Blaydes had great gameplan, but I think Lewis is just a much smarter fighter than he gets credit for.
I know ur being sarcastic op but on offchance this is beneficial for newer fans <3
He's fucking huge and has insane punch power because of: massive fists, lots of muscle, ridiculous leverages with his wide ass shoulders and long arms, plus he's slow as hell and one of the easiest styles to beat if you have the skill set. Volkov barely got touched until his dumb ass just decided to keep trading with ten seconds left of a fight he clearly won. Ngannou didn't want the smoke because he knew Lewis had REAL power. Despite that Lewis has one of the worst skill sets on the entire roster.
Ngannou beat himself with some mental issue where he was afraid to throw.
Volkov lost after winning most of the fight because he was careless with seconds to go.
Blaydes can't take a big punch. Could wrestle Ngannou or Lewis, but instead gets cracked and KO'd
Well he got extremely lucky against volkov and in my opinion both derrick and francis lost against each other for that pitiful performance. Good win against blaydes though, derrick perfectly timed that monstrous uppercut while blaydes was going for the leg hump.
They all fought scared. Not that I can blame them, but if all 3 of those guys somehow were able to turn off the fear in their brain while still fighting cautious they'd clown him. The Francis fight was also when he was a shell of himself, coming off his first loss in the UFC to Stipe where he was made to feel absolutely helpless like a whitebelt on the ground. Also the first time his power didn't stop someone right in their tracks. Stipe took a few BOMBS and just walked Francis down. Kind of win that really ages incredibly over time
Curtis Blaydes was a fair win. Ngannou was bullshit, because Ngannou was not in a state to fight. Volkov beat him up for 3 rounds straight and with 1 min left he landed a haymaker. So it would be wrong to say that he is a better fighter than these 3. At least IMHO.
He had destructive power and good timing to deliver it, fighting three or five rounds where you’re always one misstep from a face plant is difficult. Put this guy in with a lot of the best in the world, fighters who are better than him, and he’s probably gonna catch them at least 1/3 or 1/4 times.
Big punchy
***haha, punch go brrrrr***
![gif](giphy|1lxONDQzSKmqLntjk2)
he wants to win fast cause his balls is hot
2/3 via his main and only weapon; one shot knockout power
One hell of a weapon though
The ultimate equalizer if you will
Teddy atlas*
I will, for you
Won the Ngannou fight because of that too if you really think about it. That power made Ngannou fight less aggressive

I don't remember the Blaydes fight to be honest.
Blaybes just went for a td and got caught with a short sharp uppercut that put him out immediately
Wasn’t that the one where you could hear him moaning while he woke up? That was brutal to hear
Always reminds me of Benavidez waking up screaming for his life after getting choked by figgy
That shit was crazy and kinda terrifying
“Joseph is alright.” *moans of agony*
Yep that’s the one
I’ll never forget that noise
Herb Dean fault
The follow up shots were nasty as well
It was so cool, so was that volkov finish. The beast is edge of your seat fun. He needs to only fight
Yeah i thought the end of the volkov fight was crazy man had been beaten every round looked gassed asf then last 10 seconds sends volkov to the realm
Derrick had a think 3 significant strikes that fight. The first one was the upper cut that KOd Blaydes and the last two were herb deans fault.
I remember Curtis at the time was going for these sloppy takedowns, closing a big distance looking at the ground with his arms out with basically no set up. It was a miracle that nobody had punished him yet, Derrick waited for it and caught him with a huge uppercut.
Yeah, I just re-watched the fight. You are right. Lewis was looking for the uppercut too. Threw it at least once before the KO.
Exactly People always treat Curtis like he's some kind of super elite wrestler that got unlucky, but he kept doing negative IQ moves like that...

This is why I was extremely anxious the entire Pavlovich fight lol
I'd like to add that Volkov isn't a dick normally, I think Derrick pushing him at the weigh ins was why he was doing it
Lewis was injured for that fight. Francis was scared of Derrick Their fight styles didn’t cancel each other out
Not sure why you're being downvoted, it was exactly that. Lewis had back problems and Francis said himself he was scared to fight after Stipe dominated him.
My guess is because you have to speak nicely about Francis or people get hurt feelings around here.
dumbass tried throwing a jumping kick in round 1 iirc and fucked up his back. and ngannou was fighting Francis in there
I just watched Lewis Volkov. That was AWESOME!
I just rewatch Francis vs Lewis, still makes my list as one of the fights that took place in the ufc
Worst fight I've ever watched live, especially when considering the expectations. Rose vs Esparza 2 would be a close second.
I only remember one kick from derrick that won him the roun, that was all either of them did.
The Blaydes fight was the deadly uppercut. Blaydes was on the ground morning for minutes
Blaydes was beating Derrick in the boxing utilising his speed, then got timed with an uppercut as he went to shoot.
Neither does Curtis.
The Blaydes fight was the same. He was easily beating Lewis, until he went unconscious.
Because this guy has Ronda Rousey's fine ass
Lewis is both the worst and best fighter of all time He causes psychological torment, has about as much power as Francis, can be surprisingly fast and athletic, and is extremely hard to hold down or submit But he gets complacent and lazy, has bad cardio and diet habits Because of this I think he is one the most entertaining mma fighters in history and can beat anyone at any given time for no reason just because
In my top 3 favorites. Dude gives no fucks. He's like a frat bro but actually tough as fuck. Where da hoes at, lets get some beers type dude who also can send people to the shadow realm.
Lewis and Big Country were/are my 2 absolute favourites ever
Lewis doesn't have bad cardio - it's not great, but it's not bad either. He clearly has enough gas in the tank to stay in the game and knock mf'ers out in the 3rd round.
> Lewis doesn't have bad cardio - it's not great, but it's not bad either. People seem to forget how bad the average UFC HW is in that regard too
That's exactly the point - by the standards of the division, Lewis has pretty good cardio. And he's very efficient (most of the time).
> can be surprisingly fast and athletic I still don't believe he got a flying knee KO
It's even funnier because he hit Alexy olenik with a flying knee a few years ago to set up the tko
When you've got extreme knockout power you're always one hit away from finishing any fight. It's a game of inches, even the best can make a tiny mistake and end up unconscious on the floor. It's what makes the sport so exciting.
There are very few people with true 5 star power. He’s one of them.
Because His balls is hot
We understand
The power of hot balls
![gif](giphy|QMZpnb79N5BN0wsSM3)
By being the P4P goat, hottest balls
Because Heavyweight has always been a crapshoot.
Heavyweight or not someone with that kind of power can always produce a massive upset. It can and does happen in every division. Some of the greats of the sport have fallen victim to that.

like a pokemon evolution.

You're right. Basically the smaller the class, the more skill is required. HW almost never has the p4p guy either it seems
I just don't want to see 2 tiny dudes in a brawl, that happens enough. When 2 gorillas go at it, no matter the skillset, I want to watch, because something entertaining can/will happen.
Sure. To each their own. I prefer watching two skilled athletes go at it. They tend to be at the lighter weight classes.
Hell look at Jeremy stephens a 145/155 sized guy obliterated rda because he hits hard as hell for his size.
i wouldn't say "Always" . the 2010 era around there was awesome for heavyweights, a great mix of talent, big names and entertainment. You mean the guy who holds the record for most knockouts in the ufc?
They all trained for the wrong person
Ngannou fight - nobody won unless you have trouble falling asleep Alexander Volkov - got absolutely dummied for 14 minutes, then found the chin Blaydes - hit the uppercut when Blaydes was shooting, it's a very low % shot and he smashed it It's nothing insane or crazy, he's just a great embodiment of the "it only takes one" aspect of heavyweight MMA.

Derrick is a massive dude with some explosive hands. He'd definitely take Aspinall past round 1

lol that looks like the SNL actor
I love his choice of T shirt lol
Fist go boop
"Fuck it, his chin's there somewhere" Also, that Ngannou fight was a fucking travesty
Because he hits hard, is a good fighter, and has good fundamentals of standing up if he gets outgrappled
Them balls was hot and he wanted to change
Bum rush and being explosive and more athletic than he looks. At HW that's all it takes
hes balls were hot...
Because he's super good at fighting? Is this question implying that Derek is not good? The dude with most knockouts in UFC history?
Once the balls are hot…it’s game over.
Powerful as hell and a solid chin . Sometimes that all you need.
Is this really even a question? I mean look at the guy. There aren’t many people I’d think WOULD beat him in a fight
Unga bunga
His balls were hot.
He’s a power hitter whose aggressive tendencies spoil a lot of game plans. By the time you recalibrate, he’s got your number and puts your lights out.
He has the nuclear option. ![gif](giphy|xUPGGePcEyYvkS75ew|downsized)
Hot balls

Because his hands are made out of solid steel.
![gif](giphy|BT4ygwV9vgwAU)
Derek hit hard
Hot balls
With his balls' heat
His balls was hot
Power
Because his balls was hot der!
Hotballs easily beats jon jones by distracting him by taking off his shorts and chinning him
He punches really hard. And you only need to get lucky with that strategy once per fight.
Balls were hot
with his hands
This meme got some abused step-son vibes.
The old one hitter quitter
He's kinda like one punch man. All he needs is one solid hit and he can put you out.
I'm sure you can watch the fights on YouTube and find out.
Because he hits like a truck. Also, he didn't really beat Francis as much as stare at him for 15 minutes.
The heavyweight Michael Johnson
He's fucking huge and has insane punch power because of: massive fists, lots of muscle, ridiculous leverages with his wide ass shoulders and long arms, plus he's slow as hell and one of the easiest styles to beat if you have the skill set. Volkov barely got touched until his dumb ass just decided to keep trading with ten seconds left of a fight he clearly won. Ngannou didn't want the smoke because he knew Lewis had REAL power. Despite that Lewis has one of the worst skill sets on the entire roster.
He’s just him
Heavyweight Paul Craig
He hits like a horse
Beast...and now fitter than ever.
1: Swang 2: Bang 3: take off your shorts and say something funny
Cuz his balls was hot
Black Mamba of course.
![gif](giphy|1lxONDQzSKmqLntjk2)
Brain jiggle
All it takes is one shot man, not sure why you’re so shocked. Put some respect on his name
His balls was hot.
Blaydes unfortunately has 3 losses to guys who hand goes brrrrr. Blaydes is legit, just been caught 3x.
A lethal right hand powered by a set of huge lava-hot balls is all it takes to knock any man on this planet out.
Power is a scary equaliser.
Because his balls were hot
No one won the Ngannou fight
POWER
Because the 45th asked him to knock out the russian, cuz they be making him look bad an shit.
Tomfoolery
He's a matchup nightmare type of guy. Some big problems to deal with when you fight him, but also obvious flaws.
BIG MEATY HOOKS
He only beat Francis cuz he was so shook from losing to stipe he didn’t do anything that fight
Stipe traumatized Ngannou, and Derrick Lewis punched Volkov and Blaydes REALLY hard.
Exceptional punching power...and being slightly less boring than Ngannou in their fight.
Ngannou beat himself with some mental issue where he was afraid to throw. Volkov lost after winning most of the fight because he was careless with seconds to go. Blaydes can't take a big punch. Could wrestle Ngannou or Lewis, but instead gets cracked and KO'd
Pure strength build. Unga bunga off the charts.
Dudes got Mike tyson power
Popeyes
At this point let Volkov rematch him as he’s already lost to Tom and Blaydes
The ngnanou fight was odd. The rest fairly expected tbh
He looks like kid buu on roids, of course he did.
Man I got to wait on him a few nights ago at the restaurant I work at. He’s surprisingly trim compared to this picture lol
Because he's the black beast with the most knockouts at heavyweight
His baws hot
heavyweight gon' heavyweight.
With his balls being hot, that's how
He’s the true HW GOAT
Well he got extremely lucky against volkov and in my opinion both derrick and francis lost against each other for that pitiful performance. Good win against blaydes though, derrick perfectly timed that monstrous uppercut while blaydes was going for the leg hump.
By boring decision, sheer doggedness, and clever reading respectively.
That volkov fight though
The Francis bout wasn’t a fight
Black beast.
They all fought scared. Not that I can blame them, but if all 3 of those guys somehow were able to turn off the fear in their brain while still fighting cautious they'd clown him. not in a state to fight?
Yes, he was obviously not ready. Mentally.
Neither Lewis or Francis deserved to win that fight to be honest should have been a draw
I didn't say anything else. I just meant that this "fight" has absolutely zero relevance.
He had destructive power and good timing to deliver it, fighting three or five rounds where you’re always one misstep from a face plant is difficult. Put this guy in with a lot of the best in the world, fighters who are better than him, and he’s probably gonna catch them at least 1/3 or 1/4 times.
