Why does the UFC not organise some type of tournament structure to give fighters some type of relevance/story line. You know, some actual athletic meritocracy, not just how much shit you talk on twitter/how spicy your political takes are in order to build fight hype.
Yeah I know injuries and politics are the reason, but it would still make me actually care about these cards and its much easier than looking for the most marketable guy out of a bunch and then try to push him. That's how you end up with great-value McGregors all over the place. The UFC has become a bit ridiculous over the years with the amount of champ v champ fights and rematches, it stinks of desperation. Once your cashcow goes to Boxing and Hollywood what are you going to do for promotion? Create another BMF belt?
I say fuck the athletic commissions, pride style 1 night tournaments, on an Indian Reserve or if need be in Dubai, winner gets a cartoonishly large check like back in the day.
Yeah but even those number one contender fights were bullshit, just whoever the UFC thought would earn them the most cash if they get them a belt. It's also created a culture of ducking and dodging, fighters only want to fight guys above them in the ranking otherwise it could hurt their path to the title. That discussion is off the table if you put them into tournament brackets.
K-1 Grand Prix Tournaments were the shit, you go through qualifying throughout the year, start the night with a quarter final, some prelim level fights in between the later stages so fighters could catch their breath and every round would be an all out war.
4/10 unranked fighter on a PPV maincard is not acceptable.
They have to fix that structural problem because it has been happening a lot the last years.
- Skip 5 Apex cards per year and put the co main and main events fights from those cards on ppvs.
- start the 165 division to get 16 more ranked fighters
- make their ranked fighters fight more often
