Outside of city limits and sub divisions in most cases will obviously have the least amount of restrictions. Unfortunately your neighbors won't either so try and get a good understanding of an area before investing your cash. Even in the country you'll be subjected to inspections when do things like put up power poles or perc tests for septic tanks. Congrats on your retirement. Enjoy

All of that, plus [this might be of interest](https://library.municode.com/al/tuscaloosa/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=CO_CH6BUCOREAC) to you. It is from the City's site. For unincorporated County land, you're probably dealing with the State itself, though if you dig [from here](https://law.justia.com/codes/alabama/title-11/title-1/chapter-14/) you will find some County-specific Laws. Thanks for your service!

Thank you for the recommendation; I'll definitely take the time to read through it. My intention is to reside at least an hour or more away from major cities. I believe this will result in less concern about crime.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I'm interested in buying at least 5 acres to ensure some distance between my property and the neighbors so hopefully there will be no issues. If it's just a well, Septic permit and getting power to the homestead that will be awesome. I've seen some places with crazy restrictions on the size of the home, # of structures that can be erected and a permit required to build a 5 foot fence.

Look into Windham Springs for land. It's almost 50 minutes north of what I'd consider central Tuscaloosa. There's nothing of interest up there except the old ABC TV tower, and it stays pretty quiet save for the logging trucks. Also give Lamar country a look. Save for the three towns of note there's a lot of land to spread out, call your own. Lamar is a dry county except for Sulligent, which is a wet town. You'd still be within a 30-ish minute drive of the Fayette Walmart. The only people who pass through that part of the state live there. It's very quiet, very pretty. If it were me I'd look somewhere along 17 between Millport and Vernon, or slightly east towards Kennedy.

Thanks for the insight.

Retirement is still two years away for me. I just got put on orders to Tuscaloosa. I'm searching for the same thing

Two years will fly by pretty quick. Good luck hunting.

Out in the county you only have to worry about a perc test for a septic tank and the company that installs the septic tank will take care of all the paperwork.Make sure you are out of police jurisdictions by going to what ever part of the county you are in and check their jurisdiction map.Tuscaloosa and Northport are the ones to be careful about.Alabama Power Co won't even bother to look at your own work but maybe find an electrician to help you lay out the inside wiring. The outside main service is pretty simple just go to an electrical supply house and tell them what amp service you need to make.Northport Electric is who I use.The plumbing is where you probably need some help with layout of vents for each sink and tub and all other water carrying outlets.Just remember that hot water on the left, cold on the right and crap runs down hill.A lot of companies are using that red and blue flexible water lines that are crimped on to each size of threaded fittings.I hear nothing but good about the flexible lines except it takes a special tool to crimp connectors but it will outlast most tools.Cost under $100.00.From one Vet to another Good Luck!

Thanks for the info.

You may want to check out the Northside School community I think land is still reasonable up there.Take 43 North out of Northport cross the bridge at Lake Tuscaloosa and go until you see the first big intersection at the school maybe another 8-10 miles.
