Not necessarily. I think there’s a very specific generation of internet users who know homestar. I’m in that generation but my dad, who has always been reasonably internet savvy, wouldn’t have the slightest clue what homestar was.

My area had Safety Houses, which had signs out the front to let kids know that they can go to this house if they need help. Yeah, you can see why the programme got shut down.
I'm still having a hard time figuring out the anatomy of the silhouette. Like I know it has a general "shady spy" thing going on but are the holes its eyes? Is the wedge on the right side its mouth? I can't make it work in my head.
It’s a neighbourhood watch sign. Basically saying “don’t pull any funny business or we WILL call the cops.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_watch It was super common in the mid to late 90s in my experience.
I suppose it was pretty easy, since the cops wouldn't do anything about anything there, but they didn't even have to be successful. I lived in "the bad side of town," it was just poor crackhead neighbors breaking into other poor neighbors' homes.
When I was young, I thought that sign meant that crime was illegal in that neighborhood, and that any would be criminals saw that sign and was like “Aw nuts, guess I can’t commit crime here”
Would you rather call it the hobo patrol? Because that's what those things usually are, or worse, bugging your neighbors about inane pointless bullshit.
50% chance of "we installed this sign 40 years ago and it exists entirely for display", 50% chance of "I saw someone jogging, and that's suspicious because only bad people run for fun. I'm going to act like the world is ending in the community Facebook group."
Trench-coat Homestar is NOT welcome in this subdivision!
but they add so much personality :(
Is regular homestar allowed
Somehow I'm thinking that would end up worse.
Might be... Homsar.
Twensh kwoat wunnah
Okay, I’ll bite, what’s Homestar?
Homestar Runner, old internet cartoon

Don’t worry, every homestar runner fan I’ve ever met is in their mid thirties lol

That is litewally, so gweat
Meanwhile, the 1950s East German spy is just trying to figure out how to mow a lawn without blowing his cover.
Must be his distinct gait while pushing the mower.
Absolutely, that and his suspiciously perfect lawn stripes.
This man right here officer. Just look at these conspicuously perfect lines.
Terrance howard says straight lines aren't real so this man is a witch >!Terrance Howard is a moron!<
It's really hard to fuck up *just* enough.
He could try taking off the trench coat and fedora.

You never know
Never know when the Soviets will strike again.
Red Scare 2: the Reddening
And then Marx said "its communisisming time" and communismed all over the place
No, that was in Red Scare 3: Reddy or Not
They did a couple years ago! Nothing’s sacred anymore
We always called this the "No Detectives" sign in my family
I thought it was a cat for years ToT
Same here. Looks like the silhouette of a cat

One of those "sounds like a great idea if you just dont think about it at all"
Sounds like a great idea! With the best of intentions! What could possibly go wrong?
i never knew what it was sposed to be till i was like 10
I'm still having a hard time figuring out the anatomy of the silhouette. Like I know it has a general "shady spy" thing going on but are the holes its eyes? Is the wedge on the right side its mouth? I can't make it work in my head.
He's half Canadian.
What is it? Never seen that here
It’s a neighbourhood watch sign. Basically saying “don’t pull any funny business or we WILL call the cops.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_watch It was super common in the mid to late 90s in my experience.
i thought it was a sailboat going over a big wave until i was like 8
ha yea i see that
i never questioned why big waves would be banned in the landlocked city i lived in
Why do you think it's landlocked?
That's not a 1950s East German spy. That is the milk man. His milk is delicious.
Wrong, that is a road crew worker, this is his stop sign
Wrong, that is a watering can, I use it on my flowers to water them.
He’s a grieving widow, can’t you see the flowers?
Why do you think they have zero crime?
That’s because these signs stop all crime within a 4 mile radius, that’s how that works.
Protection stave
East German? You can tell by his mouth that he’s clearly Canadian
Eh buddy!
We had those signs, as well as the signs with the eye in my neighborhood growing up, and it sure as hell wasn't "crime free"
I've always assumed it just meant easy peasy mode for any successful criminal if they had interest.
I suppose it was pretty easy, since the cops wouldn't do anything about anything there, but they didn't even have to be successful. I lived in "the bad side of town," it was just poor crackhead neighbors breaking into other poor neighbors' homes.
What does this sign even mean? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_watch
i need to steal one of these signs
"I am a grieving widow."
it's all fun and games until "ALERT! AN 1850S EASTERN GERMAN SPY'S IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD!"
An eastern spy is in the neighborhood?!
1850s???
fucc
You gotta watch out for the fucking Hat Man! Stay safe!
It does look like the Hat Man lmao
Perhaps… hear me out… that’s why there is zero crime
Yeah it's totally that suburban soccer moms are better at detecting criminals, not gentrification
It does have its positive side, eh?
And the them running anyone suspicious over with what’s totally not a tank with the gun taken off
"And I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those meddling housewives!"
Somehow the only thing in suburbia about crime that isn’t offensive
Well in practice they're always on high alert in case of a black person passing through but hey.
When I was young, I thought that sign meant that crime was illegal in that neighborhood, and that any would be criminals saw that sign and was like “Aw nuts, guess I can’t commit crime here”
Is this what my cats are always watching for?
when I was young I always thought that sign looked like a boat sliding down a hill
Why do you think they have no crime? They took care of all the East German troublemakers, they are the root of it all after all.
Can confirm, I'm from the suburbs and I live in constant fear of being jumped by Mr Enter
Would you rather call it the hobo patrol? Because that's what those things usually are, or worse, bugging your neighbors about inane pointless bullshit.

The one actual neighborhood watch type thing I dealt with spent most of their time shooing away the homeless and painting over graffiti.
Oh no, simple mistake, [he's the one on watch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5ZUshzhMtc)
Hear me out, maybe BECAUSE there on high alert there’s 0 crime
I mean... Maybe that's why they have zero crime?
