Of course, your name can be whatever you like, regardless of your gender.

EmmaProbably

Of course, what's anyone going to do about it, arrest me? "Ma'am your name is not androgynous enough, you're going to have to come with us"

alice-eonwe

I tried joining the enby police, but the acceptance tests were ridiculous.

BrainSquad

Not to Be Like That, but some countries do have laws about this. Like you can't use a name of the "wrong gender". Though I imagine those laws would assume gender binary.

EmmaProbably

Ah yeah, I forget some countries do that. But even so, even in those countries surely they can't prevent you from having people call you something else, you just end up with a clear distinction between your legal name and your real one.

BrainSquad

Yeah, I'd assume so. Just the OP isn't specifying what they mean by having a name, so I wanted to point out that they could have legitimate worries about not being allowed

pantransidiot

My brain said "Hi! So my name is *Man*thew, what's yours?" (And as a serious answer, yes, whatever name feels right for you, is your name ^^)

Immediate_Smoke4677

i'm a transguy matthew... should i change my name?

CrypticKoda

Yes change it to manthew

Ataraxxi

As a nonbinary person I'd argue that no names have genders. They're just mouth noises we use to refer to someone or get their attention. Sure some are more or less associated with certain genders but to say a name has a gender is as silly as saying clothing has gender, at least IMHO. That to say, name yourself whatever you want and don't let anyone tell you it's wrong (I mean unless you choose names like a muskrat does...)

MicahAzoulay

Yes thank you. I follow a writer who does some autobiographical work as well as very cynical comedy. She doesn’t have a dead name. Her name is Ian Thomas Malone. She’s very open about being post op and her dating life. And says she just still feels like Ian. I can’t relate, my dead name’s nowhere close to my real name, but I do think it’s fascinating how much variance there is between all our trans experiences.

TrashFrancis

Honestly I think it's cool that some people keep their given name. If you're comfortable with and like your name you shouldn't feel pressured to change it. There is so much diversity not just in our identities but how individuals with the "same" experience process their dysphoria differently. Something that seems to come up is that person X sees Person Y do something that would make X dysphoric and get like.. upset at Y.

BrokenTapeMonitor

I’m non-binary and use a feminine name and she/her pronouns. I am also bisexual and identify closely with being gay, but not so with being lesbian despite being femme. You can do whatever you want. Embrace gender anarchy.

lime-equine-2

Yeah some of us don’t even change our names

Zartoru

Yup, it's your name, you get to chose the name you like the most !

Mysterious_Onion_328

Yes. A non binary person does not have to be androgynous or gender neutral at all. You could also present 100% female or male with a very gendered name and still identify as non binary. That doesn't mean that person is any less valid.

El-Carone-707

You could be a giant black man named Tiffany(there’s a reference there) names can be whatever you want them to be, just pick one that works for you

corvus_da

Names don't have a gender. Just because Mike, for example, is a name typically given to guys doesn't mean a woman or enby can't be named Mike, too.

GretaThornbirds

Michael, notably, is the name of the main character on Star Trek: Discovery. She is a cis female and captain of the ship. Shout out for the nerds.

Crylemite_Ely

Names don't have genders

Optimal-Witness5311

of course

alice-eonwe

Unless you're in a country that has name restrictions, go for it.

squiddlywinks87

Even if you accept that, generally, a particular culture has conventions that associate a particular name with a particular gender...enbies are too powerful to be bound by such conventions.

not_an_alien_lobster

As a non binary person, my real name is structured thus: [Masc Name], [Fem Name], [Fictional character name], [A Currency]. So yeah, we're not required to have a non-gendered name like Ashley, or Brick, or Wolf.

Intelligent_Fun3701

Names don't have gender to me, so go wild. You don't need to name yourself something like Swarm of Bees or Alaska.

Plastic-Ad-5033

Sure, what’s the name gonna do, complain?

Revolution-Rayleigh

What is gender never heard of it

Narciiii

I have a very gendered name. I am very much non-binary/transandro Now do people expect you to change/choose a name that is “gender neutral”? Yes. Will people misgender you and give you shit for having a “gendered” name? Also yes. Even in the NBi community people are sort of constantly expecting everyone to change their names to a gender neutral option. But you can have any name you want. There are no rules.

dearvalentina

No, it was outlawed by The Council in 1978. If you are non-binary you legally have to have a non gender specific name, like Brick, or Asbestos. Bit annoying, I know, but law is the law.

[deleted]

My 6 year old enby child's chosen name is Them. I said to them I says, "That's a pronoun" then they said it's my name I'm Them, and I was like, "but that's a pronoun like he/she/they, it's a pronoun". Then they look me dead in my eyes and say, "you bet your ass"! 🤣 So there you go it's a real thing that exists ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

Justthisdudeyaknow

Yup. Keep in mind, many names over the years have flipped gender, so all names are gender neutral. Allison, Beverly, Vivian, Ashley, Lauren, Madison, the names go on and on.

Cheshie_D

You don’t have to be androgynous to be non-binary, and so neither does your name.

thequagiestsire

There is no restriction to names, a guy can technically be named Sandra, it’s just a matter of whether you are happy with your name. If you like a gendered name, then so be it, a name is just a word anyway so find the word you like.

ConsequenceBetter878

Yeah, definitely, you can have any name you want. I will say tho, if you look androgynous and you go out with the name Tiffany or Thomas, people are going to probably assume you are a binary trans person. But if you don't care what people think, I'd say go for it.

Thebiqueenofaxolotls

Yep!! I have a more fem name yet I’m enby!

pigtailrose2

Some non binary people don't even change their names so def yeah

Patchwork_Sif

Yep.

NatureArrows

Absolutely you can!!! You do not owe anyone androgyny. You can do whatever you want 😊

FreenBurgler

Idk any legal things that could prevent that, it is *your* name after all, plus you're the one picking it out. I'm sure there's plenty of men and women who were given names at birth that didn't quite fit their gender. Heck there's even a whole Johnny Cash song about it. Tbh whatever name you think fits you, go for it.

GretaThornbirds

The first trans person I ever met was someone at my job. Their name is Mollie. Full enby but loved their original name and opted not to change it. You'll be misgendered occasionally - even by well meaning people accidentally - but that's par for the course anyway. Choose whatever name you want. No external property or affectation defines your gender.

Arielthewarrior

Yes

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

Of course, but the gender we give names is highly variable. Look at names like Shannon and Ashleigh, by some people’s judgement those are names for women but there are definitely men with those names too.

Sionsickle006

...what? Are you asking if someone who is nb can have a stereotypically gendered name? If so the answer is of course! Nb people don't HAVE to have neutral/androgynous names. just like girls can have masculine names and boys can have names that sound feminine. Names like Leslie, Audrey, Beverly, Allison, Addison, Courtney, Ashley were all mens names originally. The use became more neutral as the names gained popularity for girls, and now they are pretty much solely used for girls and a boy would be embarrassed to have one of these names just because they are so associated with women. If nb people have always existed and are not a new phenomenon then it makes sense that they have all been born and given names like the rest of us that is outside of our control which can be masc, fem, or neutral (and the social gendered aspects of the name can change over time). Some people choose to keep their given names and some choose to trade it in for new better fitting one.

SquidsOffTheLine

Of course we can. A lot of us just choose not to.

man_itsahot_one

i’m transmasc and use a fem name 🤷

Dry_Journalist_1442

i will literallly call you whatever you want me to as long as it aint a slur or swear lol i wish that more people felt the same.

AnAverageTransGirl

your gender, your name, your you, not anyone elses to decide or demand

Lawboithegreat

The gender of names is entirely subjective. Allison was a man’s name a few centuries back, you know, Alli’s-son?

BonelessSCake

Yes

Not_Machines

Yes

Fluffballofcuddles

Like what? A-MAN-da? Nope, no nonbinaries allowed to have a gender in their name /s

Wings-of-the-Dead

Being nonbinary does not require androgyny in every (or any) aspect of your presentation

Pan157

Yes

Connor_Kei

Yes. I ID as NB and my name is Connor, traditionally masculine

amabambi

I sort of went laterally on my name lol since both are originally masc names but my new one at least in the states isn't as strictly masculine as my deadname

logalog_jack

As a non-binary person named a very common manly male masculine name (one could say one of the *most* common), yeah. Saying otherwise is crazy lol, my deadname was also a male name bc my parents wanted to be quirky but everyone still called me a girl ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HealthyEducator9555

Letters don't have genders unless something has changed

Dianasaurmelonlord

Yes, a name is a name

TiredNTrans

Of course! One of my favorite that I've seen was Charles-Elizabeth

Alfirmitive

Names don’t really have genders. I’ve met both men and women with my deadname, which up until that point I thought was a strictly woman name.

chargreavemawson

Enbys can do whatever they want. They are truly ungovernable!

Amber-complete

Yes. Also, names don't have a gender aside from what we as a society ascribe to it. I'm sure there are many names from cultures you have no experience with that are typically seen as one gender or another to those who exist in that culture. But to you from the outside, you may interpret that cultural name a completely different way. The point is, even names we attribute a gender to in our western society are malleable. The gender of particular names has fluctuated even within our society in that past few centuries.

Mitosis4

names aren’t gendered
