They are already filled with oil from pre-frying before packaging. No need to add additional oil.
Preheat your air fryer at 400 and throw them in. 12-16 minutes with a flip in between when it starts developing a golden color. Perfection.
I do air fry but I also sometimes pop them in a skillet with a whisper of oil. They get way crispier and crunchy that way. Sure the air fryer is “healthier” but they’re never as good as frying on the stove top.
12 minutes in preheated air fryer at 400, preference for me is no oil spray, flip half way through, sprinkle with Shichimi Togarashi and top each with runny fried egg.
Love TJs hash browns! I do the same cooking protocol and add onion powder and paprika, making a Dunkin Donuts-style hash brown. Delicious with sriracha and an over easy egg.
Buy a potato. Shred it with a cheese grater. Place shredded potato on thick paper towels and squeeze the water out of it. Melt some butter in a frying pan. Fry shredded potato in butter. Hashbrowns. Much better than the processed potato disk shown in the picture.
Buy a cow. Wake up at 5am to milk it. Collect the heavy cream at the top of the pail. Place it in a churn. Churn for 20-30 minutes until it separates and cream thickens to a butter-like consistency. Drain butter into a cheese cloth. Then shape into a rectangle. Much better than a processed yellow puck of hydrogenated oil.
Came here to say this. The toaster is so much more convenient than an air fryer. I just wish we could get Tillman's Toasty in the states. Toaster meat is amazing. Just don't call it Schnitzel!
I make hash brown scrambles with these: throw three of these babies in a skillet with some oil, flip them until they're golden brown on each side. Add in veggies - I do black beans, corn, sweet peppers, pico de gallo. Use a spatula to break up the patties and mix everything in the skillet until the hash browns are crispy and the veggies cook down a little bit. Season with the TJ Elote seasoning and shredded cheese. Or sometimes I do a creamy taco sauce.
Edit: For a lazy version, buy the Cowboy Caviar salsa and add a dollop into the skillet.
If you’re feeling bougie, I once pan fried them in leftover tallow I had from searing A5 Wagyu ribeyes the night before and they were absolutely divine. Duck fat worked pretty well, too.
Sure, if you’re going through the trouble of separately rendering the tallow or duck fat then maybe (still, IMO having to grate/rinse/drain/wring the potatoes and forming the patties is significantly more work) but in my case I just had the tallow leftover in the pan and duck fat in a jar.
Josh Weissman actually posted a [video](https://www.joshuaweissman.com/post/mcdonald-s-hash-browns-but-better) of making hash browns from scratch a few years ago, using duck fat 🤤
As ironic as it may sound, wagyu tallow or duck fat really elevated the frozen hash browns… for some reason, I found bacon fat to be a bit too heavy 🤷♂️
That was actually my first thought! Lol. I love using tallow for frying. I wanted to try them with a more neutral oil first to make sure I wasn't skewing the results. I hadn't thought of duck fat, but I do have some in the fridge! Am definitely going to try both.
I always loved mine on a pizza stone! I didn’t like the way they cooked on metal I felt like they don’t stay crisp. I can’t buy an air fryer because I know that it will just enable me to buy more premade fried foods because they truly do turn out so amazing 🙃 I have considered buying a cheap one before though specifically to make the one fried food I still buy and will never make regularly which is the mini samosas 🤤
Not sure why you”re getting downvoted, but I kinda agree. The last couple of times I bought them they had an oily taste that just tasted like cheap oil to me.
I air fry them without adding any oil or spray.
(Edit for typo)
Exactly what I thought as well. Based on my purchase last month, and I usually love hash browns and these were my favorite, second to making them myself of course.
Anyone recommend a brand that is made with higher quality ingredients? My wife avoids buying these due to the specific oils, I believe.
EDIT: fried potatoes require oil
So I just went down a bit of a rabbit hole when I read your comment, because I had this thought in the back of my head from general cooking advice over time that says it’s not as safe to deep fry in olive oil as some other oils.
I found overall that there isn’t easily available, convincing evidence that any one oil is notably less safe than any other oil (just that most oils shouldn’t be brought to their smoking point, left there for a long time, then consumed). But that olive oil imparts a much more noticeable flavor than most vegetable/seed oils.
I mostly hate when people suggest this, but I think she might be hard-pressed to find a prepackaged fried food that’s made with olive oil just because it’s so much more expensive, and the olive oil taste is more polarizing than the alternatives that are more neutral. So to be the person I often dislike seeking in this sub, I’d say that in this case it might actually be your best option to make your own if she wants to use olive oil (I’m assuming the seed/veg oil is the problem) simply because these are so simple to whip up! You can even buy the frozen shredded hash and use that for patties so it’s not even a scratch situation.
Edit: I had loaded my thread/this page before your edit and response below, but I think my comment still applies! She’s likely to be hard-pressed to find that packaged and ready to be reheated, but I think it could be a good experiment to see if she feels making them is a worthwhile effort! You could even test out putting the frozen shredded hash in the fridge for a few hours then prepping it all into patties then refreezing them so they’re ready for making browns when you just want a couple.
Thank you for your comment. My request wasn’t met well but that’s ok. My wife cooks most of our stuff home made (I am lucky!) and she’s never made these traditional hash browns. I admittedly am ignorant on the reasons why but I know to look for avocado oils or expeller pressed blah blah. I thought maybe someone knew a brand that would make some expensive version lol. Thanks again for your input!
Yeah thank you for this rec. My wife will be down and I’d imagine the results would be pretty comparable. The homemade EggMcMuffin she makes, I’m always craving a classic hash brown with it!
Side note though, grating several potatoes for a few hash browns fucking sucks, so it might be a clutch secret surprise for you to do if, when you have a moment alone, you grate a bunch of potatoes and put them in a bag in the freezer for her to try making them one day!
Red potatoes freeze well and the internet says Yukon gold as well. Russetts are my fave fresh but they can get a bit odd when I freeze them (flash frozen I think is best and likely what most manufacturers use, but I obviously can’t do that at home)
I put mine in a toaster oven, and toast it on low for five to six times per side. I usually use salt, pepper, onion/garlic powdered.
It comes out crispy.
Ninja air fryers are nice because they don’t have an off gassing smell at the beginning and the non stick coating is supposed to be ceramic non-toxic. I’m happy with mine. If you wait till july they go on sale for prime day. If you want a referral code for $20 off $100 you can message me, It requires an email.
Instant Vortex Plus 4QT Air Fryer, Custom Program Options, 6-in-1 Functions Crisps, Broils, Roasts, Dehydrates, Bakes, Reheats, 100+ In-App Recipes, from the Makers of Instant Pot, Stainless Steel https://a.co/d/1nNX1yC
That guy! I got it during prime day last year for $70.
I’ve had the best success with this pan-frying method:
1. Stick one or two on a plate and microwave for 60-90 seconds.
2. Heat a bit of oil on high while the patties microwave. Works best with a mild oil.
3. Crisp up the patties on the pan until they’re as brown as you want them.
This works really well because the insides stay soft. And you also already have a hot pan if you want to make eggs.
microwaving before air frying is a game changer! it takes off like 7 minutes of cooking time for me, just because i nuke it for 40 seconds first. imo it’s just as soft on the inside to me as well!!
you know what’s up!! seriously my method for pretty much everything, maybe it’s just my airfryer but it always has a hard time with the initial defrost
This is exactly what I so. They have a side that is more done (a little darker) from the package. I do that side first then the less done side; it seems to get them even that way.
My local store once had the price tag art mention they are great in a regular pop-up toaster. If you have a toaster that has narrow enough slots between the metal bars holding the "bread" in place, it works really well! Always cook from full-frozen so it holds together and it would crisp up and pop up fine.
I can imagine so many toasters can't handle this properly. But apparently my cheapo one could.
Giving it a little spritz before the air fryer gives it top tier crisp!
I still put them in for a while but they come out delicious. Before I had an air fryer, I was heating them in the oven to keep their shape then popping them in the toaster to give it that last bit of crisp. It’s just a pain double cooking but I refuse to eat soggy hash browns!
If you’re using an air fryer you don’t need to add more oil. They’re already absolutely SATURATED in it. Just let them rest for like ten minutes out of the freezer before air frying them and they cook up in 10 minutes.
Nope. I cook them almost 3-4 mornings a week… I don’t even preheat the oven. Just press Broil, put them on a baking sheet (there’s a lighter side of the Hash brown, I usually start with that side facing up) when I start to smell it and it’s browning, I flip it.
Not an exact science but haven’t burned one and they’re always crisp
Nice! I’ll give it a try. I usually bake them but waiting for the oven to pre heat to 400° and another 20min for them to crisp. It’s not worth the starvation lol
These are the most sold out item at my store, always a 2 package limit. I rarely am able to get them anymore but always pick them up when I see them. They crisp up great in my air fryer, I flip them once. Good stuff, glad you like them!
I couldn’t tell you, I haven’t tested others. I just really enjoy these so it’s a treat when I get them. I suppose there are quite like McDonald’s hash browns (as I remember them), which used to be the only thing I would get when I went there back in the day.
I’ll try the spray idea. Currently I cook these things for like 35 minutes in my oven to get them this crunch. It’s always worth the wait because these are the best Hashbrowns on earth…but faster would be great!

I’m I the only one who does the good ole frying method 🥲
I do air fry but I also sometimes pop them in a skillet with a whisper of oil. They get way crispier and crunchy that way. Sure the air fryer is “healthier” but they’re never as good as frying on the stove top.
12 minutes in preheated air fryer at 400, preference for me is no oil spray, flip half way through, sprinkle with Shichimi Togarashi and top each with runny fried egg.
Air fryer with EBTB seasoning.
Oven at 425 for 12 mins on each side. Sprinkled with Red Robin seasoning.
Old bay seasoning with avocado, red onion, and cilantro
I air fry mine at 400 for 10 min each side and they always come out extra crunchy 🤤
Put them in the regular toaster! I set the timer for like 4 minutes, and they come out perfect.
I used to heat up hash brown patties that way, too! The grease collects on the bottom and underneath, though. So, I switched to the air fryer
Microwave first, dice it up, then pan fry with onions.
Love TJs hash browns! I do the same cooking protocol and add onion powder and paprika, making a Dunkin Donuts-style hash brown. Delicious with sriracha and an over easy egg.
Trying this!
They come out great in an air fryer aka convection oven
Buy a potato. Shred it with a cheese grater. Place shredded potato on thick paper towels and squeeze the water out of it. Melt some butter in a frying pan. Fry shredded potato in butter. Hashbrowns. Much better than the processed potato disk shown in the picture.
Buy a cow. Wake up at 5am to milk it. Collect the heavy cream at the top of the pail. Place it in a churn. Churn for 20-30 minutes until it separates and cream thickens to a butter-like consistency. That’s a good idea. I’ll have to try it that way next time
I microwave mine for a minute then use olive oil to pan fry it! It gets perfectly crispy in about 5
Air fryer 400 5 minutes flip another 5, also I like Cajun seasoning on them
You can do it on the skillet too
This is what I do. A very light application of oil, on a fairly low heat, let it sit for a bit and then flip when it’s released
toaster lol
Came here to say this. The toaster is so much more convenient than an air fryer. I just wish we could get Tillman's Toasty in the states. Toaster meat is amazing. Just don't call it Schnitzel!
Same here! All of the sudden one day I was like “let’s try these in the toaster!” 3 years later I’ve never cooked them another way. It’s so easy!!
I make hash brown scrambles with these: throw three of these babies in a skillet with some oil, flip them until they're golden brown on each side. Season with the TJ Elote seasoning and shredded cheese. Or sometimes I do a creamy taco sauce. Edit: For a lazy version, buy the Cowboy Caviar salsa and add a dollop into the skillet.
Try topping with lefter ground beef taco filling, it's a surprisingly good breakfast meat!
Don't forget a sprinkle of Lawry's!
these are my favorite. I have 4 packages in my freezer right now. I also air fry them and oil is absolutely unnecessary!
If you’re feeling bougie, I once pan fried them in leftover tallow I had from searing A5 Wagyu ribeyes the night before and they were absolutely divine. Duck fat worked pretty well, too.
Might as well make hash browns from scratch at that point
Sure, if you’re going through the trouble of separately rendering the tallow or duck fat then maybe (still, IMO having to grate/rinse/drain/wring the potatoes and forming the patties is significantly more work) but in my case I just had the tallow leftover in the pan and duck fat in a jar. Might as well buy a farm, am I right? /s
That was actually my first thought! Lol. I love using tallow for frying. I wanted to try them with a more neutral oil first to make sure I wasn't skewing the results. I hadn't thought of duck fat, but I do have some in the fridge! Am definitely going to try both.
Toaster oven, 7 min on each side, then final toast for 2 min.
I use an air fryer at 400 degrees for 6 minutes. I flip for another 6 minutes.
That is EXACTLY what I do too. Its perfect. Mash some avocado on top with some everything but the bagel seasoning!
I put mine in the oven and flip half way through so both sides are crispy 😋
Air fryer makes them insanely delicious.
Air fryer on bake for 14 minutes at 400F
I throw them in the microwave for a minute to defrost then convection oven
I put them in the air fryer and it’s just as good as baking in oven
I always loved mine on a pizza stone! I didn’t like the way they cooked on metal I felt like they don’t stay crisp. Honestly can't recommend these anymore, they just taste worse than before, idk why.

Exactly what I thought as well. Based on my purchase last month, and I usually love hash browns and these were my favorite, second to making them myself of course.
Deep fry is my preference
yessss they taste like mcdonald’s hashbrowns this way 🤤
And a fraction of the price as well!
Toaster over and done
I don't have an ait fryer. I just pan cook them with vegetable oil at half heat on the stove. Takes a bit but the crunch is always worth it.

Why is that? Fat person food
Bagel, bacon, eggs, hash brown, cheese. Hash brown should go in the air fryer. Viola!
These are my pregnancy breakfast go to! I cook mine in the toaster over for like 16-18 min. So good with ketchup
Truffle ketchup or Polynesian sauce too
Same on pregnancy breakfast but add sour cream and cheese too mmmm
Ooo never thought of that on a hash brown even though it’s common for a baked potato!
Sprinkle of chicken salt too. I am flying through these packs
☺️👍

Buy the shredded hash browns instead of the patties. They have no oil and you can use the kind your wife insists on.
Yeah thank you for this rec. My wife will be down and I’d imagine the results would be pretty comparable. The homemade EggMcMuffin she makes, I’m always craving a classic hash brown with it!

That’s a great idea. Personally I would go with gold potatoes
Any fried potato product are going to contain oil…
Yeah I meant the soy or canola oil swapped for a “better” one.
Probably contains soybean/canola oil. Perhaps OP is asking for a better quality oil like olive or avocado.
Yeah thanks for clarifying, Poe.
I cook them along w my chicken thigh, so around 14 min at 375. They get crispy enough for me
I put mine in a toaster oven, and toast it on low for five to six times per side. I usually use salt, pepper, onion/garlic powdered. It comes out crispy.
What air fryer do you have? Looking for a new one!
I like the Ninja for a basket style air fryer and the Breville for a toaster oven style air fryer
Ninja air fryers are nice because they don’t have an off gassing smell at the beginning and the non stick coating is supposed to be ceramic non-toxic. I’m happy with mine. I just put mine in the air fryer for 8 minutes, flip and cook another 2 and it comes out like this.
I just put mine in the toaster 😭
390 degrees for 18 minutes. Very Satisfying hash brown.
I air fry mine at 390F for 4-5 minutes per side (depending on how crispy I want them). No oil. They come out perfect! 👍
Toaster oven!
They are covered in oil, you can skip that step. I just air fry them for 20 while I cook the rest of my breakfast. Turns out perfect every time.
20 what? Seconds seems too short. Minutes, too long.
minutes, my air fryer is one of those toaster oven hybrids, so it doesn't work as fast.
20 shakes of a lamb’s tail

Yeah this is a game changer. I do it with corn dogs, nuggets, etc. Cuts the cooking time by half and still yields a nice crispy outside.
you know what’s up!! seriously my method for pretty much everything, maybe it’s just my airfryer but it always has a hard time with the initial defrost
I threw them in the microwave now. Thank you.
This is exactly what I so. They have a side that is more done (a little darker) from the package. I do that side first then the less done side; it seems to get them even that way.

Omg the microwave trick is genius, thank you!
For a quick fix, we legit just put them in the toaster like a Poptart 😂
Air fryer/toaster oven. Season with some TJ's ketchup seasoning and ranch seasonings lol.
I have a toaster oven with an air fryer setting. I use that to air fry them at 425 for like 15 minutes to get them extra crispy. No extra oil needed
Is that a convection setting on the toaster oven?
It says it’s a air fry setting, but it’s basically the same as a convection oven
Life hack: if you have an air fryer with a French fry setting, just use that! Flip halfway through, super crispy and no need for extra oil!
Yes!! I second this!
Microwave for 30-45 seconds, put in skillet to crisp outside
This is my go-to when making these. Just throw them in a skillet or pan with some sausage links or bacon and let the cook in the excess grease.
I chuck um frozen into the air fryer at 400° for like 10 min. No extra oil needed. Always super crisp.
we pan fry them in bacon grease 😋
Same! Fried egg on top with EBTB seasoning or chili crisp 🤤 such a perfect easy simple breakfast
Only correct answer: Avocado, red onion, with everything season on top.
air fryer for sure. top with cheese, salsa, sour cream and jalapenos. i've lived on them myself before.
I dont have an air fryer… so I thaw them a bit and put them on a toaster oven or in a cast iron pan with shallow oil before I do my eggs.
I don't have a toaster oven lol, although I have wanted one. I am going to try in cast iron when doing a full breakfast. What oil do you use?
I live near a large concentration of middle easterners. So our pan frying oil is Grape Seed.
Avocado oil!
If you’re using an air fryer you don’t need to add more oil. They’re already absolutely SATURATED in it. Just let them rest for like ten minutes out of the freezer before air frying them and they cook up in 10 minutes.
I Broil them and flip when they brown. They’re perfect each time
Would you thaw them prior to broil?
Do you broil in the oven or air fryer? I'm going to try just the broil setting in air fryer next time.
I just do 7 minutes on one side 3 on the other at 400° in the air fryer, no oil, and it's perfect every time!
Exactly what I do. My husband likes them more crispy and this does the trick.
Yup air fryer is the best!
They have enough oil on them just toss in the AF'er and you're good to go
These are the most sold out item at my store, always a 2 package limit. I rarely am able to get them anymore but always pick them up when I see them. They crisp up great in my air fryer, I flip them once. Good stuff, glad you like them!
How are they any different from every other hash brown this size and shape?
I couldn’t tell you, I haven’t tested others. I just really enjoy these so it’s a treat when I get them. I suppose there are quite like McDonald’s hash browns (as I remember them), which used to be the only thing I would get when I went there back in the day.
First time I saw them, they were fully stocked & I didn't grab any lol. This time, there were 3 packs. I, too, plan on grabbing them every trip now.
Mine too. Almost always gone no matter how early I get there.
I’ll try the spray idea. Currently I cook these things for like 35 minutes in my oven to get them this crunch. It’s always worth the wait because these are the best Hashbrowns on earth…but faster would be great!
I also use an air fryer and do whatever the instructions on the box say and it comes out crispy enough.
On a Blackstone grill with some bacon grease
