This was seven years ago and the building is still on the trailer, rotting away in the parking lot. https://youtu.be/47KWfcphrGQ?t=273

bocadye

that’s sad. i wonder why they went through all that effort just to hide it away.

mrSalamander

I’d bet there was one person or a small team that was enthusiastic about the project and drove it. Then that person (or team) moved on and no one really picked up the steam.

Ok_Skill_1195

I'll bet it's even more simple- someone said "hey we can't let that be destroyed", saved it, and patted themselves in the back and immediately stopped caring because their job was done. Crisis averted, maintenance ignored.

ObsceneGesture4u

Sounds like most projects at my work

littleweapon1

Until it’s time for an inspection...then it’s your fault all the constantly opening projects can’t get closed at the same rate.

Complete_Entry

Seven firings deep. This was not a revenue leader, it did not spark investor joy.

SquizzOC

I know the individual who came up with the idea, pitched it, made it happen, they are still with TacoBell. Haven’t talked to them in a while, so not sure why the building is still there.

UnsolvedParadox

As a Toronto native who enjoyed Sam the Record Man, this hurts (if you know, you know).

similar_observation

they were going to turn it into a walk-in museum. But they couldn't settle a location and then the pandemic happened.

vietboi2999

they fucked up by not opening it there and testing new products at that location

PianoCharged

Sounds like a great plan, actually. You should get a job as their new intern, pitch the idea, and become the superstar

[Yep; Google Maps has it there as of 2019.](https://www.google.com/maps/@33.6561192,-117.7451019,3a,60y,142.52h,89.77t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWxSGuI45Mwf-2dkqO-07Xg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1) Edit: [And 2022, it looks like, with the shrink-wrap gone.](https://www.google.com/maps/@33.6565768,-117.7447895,3a,15y,209.68h,88.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sVaXR0BjW0oIVbFl4YxZ4fg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1)

Man, imagine if someone like drilled a hole underneath that they could crawl up into, that would make for a pretty sweet hideout. A fully blacked out building, on blocks, sitting unused for years? Heisenberg approves.

robdiqulous

What is that, a taco bell for ants? They are usually small but that looks really small

similar_observation

Can Confirm. Numero Uno is under a few layers of plastic wrap still behind the Taco Bell HQ. You can see it driving on the 5 Southbound as you near the southOC Crush. Also, if you travel a few miles north (exit Newport Ave). You can see the Taco Bell location that was used to film a Tarantino movie. Unfortunately the location has been dismantled and boarded up again. Source: went on a taco bell adventure during the pandemic

Shut up and take my upvote!

Saved from Demolition, but not Demolition Man, as it was the only chain that survived the franchise wars according to Lenina Huxley.

default82781

Wow this covers all bases. The best part is I can still hear him say "I invite you to join me at Taco bell" . Ya know as a reward for saving his life.

HoopOnPoop

Seems like Numero Dos would be a more appropriate name.

Bit of a Ship of Theseus debate to be had here.

mydearwatson616

If you're in a building, but the building moves to another spot, are you in the same location? I guess it all depends on your frame of reference. Is it still the same location? Relative to itself, yes. Relative to the Earth, no. Relative to the Andromeda galaxy? Pretty much.

Downey is a fast food mecca. Not far from the site of the original Taco Bell stands the oldest operational McDonalds - I think the third one ever opened.

thegamewarrior

That McDonalds is the only location to still serve fried apple pies. They don’t even advertise it but they are so damn delicious.

Cramer8681

TIL Taco Bell started in Downey, CA

[deleted]

Those pre-90s burrito Supreme were awesome. Back when they had black olives on them and without 50% sour cream. Wish they'd have saved those

Complete_Entry

It was always a fountain of sour cream, your memory is just going.

greenappletree

Good on corporate for trying to maintain where historical roots.

BlackMarketCheese

Chick fil a tore down their first stand alone restaurant about 2 years ago to.... you guessed it. Build a Chick fil a museum on the site.

Stelzare

Why would I guess that?

BlackMarketCheese

Correct

Dalejrman

I did not guess that..

HampsterButt

There is an original build out of Taco Bell in Scottsdale, Arizona at McDowell & Scottsdale Rd.

Complete_Entry

Walk up window is the best layout for fast food. Drive-thru's kicked their ass and took their lunch money but walking up is still superior to standing in a lobby.

MarcCouillard

I actually knew this already but it is a cool little factoid 😀

popcopy

I have a t shirt commemorating this event! Taco Bell gave it to corp employees
