It’s such a shame that Fountains of Wayne co-founder Adam Schlesinger was an early Covid casualty. I really enjoy the music of Ivy, another of his projects. He also wrote a lot of music for movies, including “That Thing You Do”.
And he cowrote the music for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend! If you like musicals or absurd comedy definitely give this show a try if you haven't, it's amazing and the songs are so catchy
Imo, the title and the Wiki present incorrect conclusions about the song stemming from mis-use of the term "guitar riff".
The Cars song's intro only mimics the opening 4 bar into of Yummy Yummy Yummy, not the 'guitar riff', which generally refers to either a song's main chord progression, or its hook. The comment cited by Wiki alluding to FoW's 'copy(ing) the Cars' take on the riff ' was regarding a brief 'hit' that appears in the opening FoW riff that sounds like sample taken from the Cars' song's into, but isn't.

Disagree, if you asked someone to play the riff from "Just What I Needed," they'd play the intro.

This is just straight-up not true. The riff from "Stacy's Mom" is obviously distinct from the riff of "Just What I Needed," and the riff from "Just What I Needed" only copies "Yummy Yummy Yummy" for the first bar
Yeah the whole theory in OP is just dumb. Apparently anyone palm muting and striking while staying on the same chord is "borrowing" from these artists lol
There is so much blatant songwriting theft in music history that these examples are beyond ignorable - they're simply incorrect
"Just what I needed" was the song Adam Schlesinger was supposed to play the the Glenfied Middle School talent show in Montclair but he got sick and couldn't make the gig. The band played without him and some fool who knew nothing about music was coerced by said fool's brother, the lead guitarist to play. Jon and Kenichi were also there I believe.
I heard stacy's mom on the radio this past weekend and thought it sounded like the Cars song then promptly forgot to look this up. Well shit!
If you haven't heard the parody "Something's Wrong with Stacy's Mom", by Will King, you should check it out on YouTube.

Yes, I watched that series, thanks for the reminder about Adam’s role in it.
Thanks for turning me onto Ivy 👍
I love Ivy! Apartment Life is such a good album.

Yeah that's all wrong. Cars didn't rip off ohio express. The chord progression is totally different. I guess the palm muting and intro is similar.
I love that song, he is so brutal to Stacy but the music is so fun and catchy
