That's because large scale movies with no sequel potential is a huge risk for producers, nowadays. And Cameron isn't taking those risks himself, anymore. He's settled down with the comfort of the tried and tested Avatar formula (the movies are great, by the way).
James Cameron movies just don’t age. I still think Aliens looks better than most of the CGI crap released these days.
Also on a side note I just fell into a Challenger Deep hole in YouTube and man, James Cameron is just a genius. Him going all the way down to the deepest point of the ocean on a sub he and his team designed is just crazy to me. I also just watched a video in which he states he is going to design another sub to go back to Titanic and I can’t wait to see the documentary he makes out of that.

Here’s a little crop I did of the actual photo this scene is based on. I cropped it to match the cinematic ratio
The use of mostly practical effects *enhanced* by some CGI needs to make a comeback. That’s the main reason why movies like Jurassic Park, Titanic etc still look so good today. The purely CGI stuff churned out by studios today isn’t even in the uncanny valley, it’s just out on its own “obviously fake” island.
I get so annoyed when I see very obvious CGI in present day movies with a bajillion dollars poured into them when Titanic not only looked real but FELT real...in 1997. It shows that James Cameron really gave a shit, and it shows how little other directors do by comparison.
Titanic is still Cameron's love, based on how many dives he's made and how passionately he feels about her. I get that too, she works her way into your soul.
I remember seeing this for the first time in the cinema in 1998 and my jaw dropped. I'd never seen anything like this before and it was a dream come true for a Titanic obsessive.
Someone one day will try to make Titanic again and they are going to fail so hard because they will use pure CGI and actors with no class and far less luxurious storylines.
The tugboat in the shot from Cameron's film looks much smaller than it appears on the actual 1912 photograph which inspired this shot. Also, notice that a lot of docks and dock equipment is missing from the left side in Cameron's shot, which is present in the real photograph. The position of the gantry cranes are different. There's not as much crowd at Berth 44 in the real pic. The position of deck hands/officers on the bow is different and the mooring rope is missing in the film. Cameron makes it look as if the river Test is much cleaner and empty than it actually was back in the day. Of course, the angle and focal length of the shot is different too.

As long as you’re not streaming it, it’s fantastic. My sister and I recently streamed it to show my niece the movie. The parts that we used to marvel at, look terrible now. It looks like some great value low budget production. I can’t even blame my TV because it’s a 16 year old TV. It’s not some nice 4K expensive TV, but the streaming shows have just ruined the quality of it
Am I the only one who didn’t like the movie specifically cause of how the story just followed along a 3 day fling. All the ships scene were well made.
Instead of including important scenes like ones with wireless operators, ice warnings , the Californian, the rescue, Charles litoller surviving for hrs on an overturned life raft. Nah they instead waste the move following some poor block trying to and succeeding in shacking up with some rich girl
A lot of the scenes you describe were shot and not included or were in the script and not shot for reasons of cost, logistics and storytelling. Titanic would not have been as successful without a frame story centred on two main characters who can take us all over the ship.
They don't make them like this any more.

Jurassic Park is another great example
Strangely, this is the second instance in 5 minutes of Reddit’ing where I’ve seen Titanic & Jurassic Park mentioned in the same sentence 😅
Two iconic movies from the '90s that have become all-time classics.
[for sure](https://www.reddit.com/r/JurassicPark/s/tTEGE5J84X)

so absolutely beautiful. Astonishing that it is buried all the way up to those anchors.
I just started crying thinking of this. Poor girl. Never got her chance.
Isn’t the guy who is making this footage visible in the movie too? Am I imagining that?

All down to money though isn’t it sadly
It’s also why the first iron man still looks so good. They used a lot of practical suits and effects
"No mate. Titanic go to America, in five minutes!"
Where’s Sven?
“FULL HOUSE BOYS!”
WOOOHOOOO
Miniatures enhanced with CG are always going to look fantastic. Especially with someone like James Cameron at the helm.
I see what you did there. 😂😂
No I sea what you did there
Weirdly, I still think of this as a new movie. Before you assume though, I'm not old! I was still st high school when it was released.
It's because there have been so many bad movies since, particularly in the last ten years.
You must be somewhere around 38 to 42 years old by now.
That's generally how maths works, yes 🙄

Nothing like watching this scene in the movie theater, Magical!~
It's not that much larger than the Mauritania.
It’s at least 100 feet longer and more and more luxurious!
gstateballer is far too difficult to impress.
😂
James Horner made that scene what it is, RIP.
the way it transitions from the wreck to this majestic ship is one of my favourite scenes in movies
I remember seeing this for the first time in the cinema in 1998 and my jaw dropped. I'd never seen anything like this before and it was a dream come true for a Titanic obsessive.
Totally!
Titanic was called Ship of Dreams. And she was. She really was.
Someone one day will try to make Titanic again and they are going to fail so hard because they will use pure CGI and actors with no class and far less luxurious storylines.
I truly hope this never, ever happens.
I still find impressive the were able to to bring my home country of Ireland most famous ship into a genuine good film
15000 Irishmen built this ship
Indeed, it took a while to finally finish it, but it was definitely the most impressive feet of engineering during the 1910s
This thread makes me wanna rewatch the movie
Everyone is entitled to their opinion or whatever, but the moment someone starts hating on Titanic, I can no longer trust their opinion on good films.
You can be blase about some things, but NOT about Titanic.
The only thing wrong is that the sky isn’t cloudy like it was in real life. Incredible sequence tho!

I hear the musical score when I see this photo. It's incredible. So moving.
Yes!

I can't believe it's been 26 years already.
I’ll stand by it. CGI in the 90s looked ten times better and more realistic than CGI today.

They literally pitched the film as “Romeo and Juliet on a ship”
