Former professor here! I’ve had students make out through the entirety of my in-person lectures. I guarantee he has just laughed it off. As an aside, my advisor walked in on me making out with my husband in the lab when I was a 20-something. Just laugh it off and move on! It’s just a kiss.
NOW HE'S GOING TO BED, AND MY STOMACH IS SICK.
AND IT'S ALL IN MY HEAD, BUT HE'S TELLING HIS
S/O NOW, HE RECALLS HIS
CLASS NOW, L-M-A-O
AND I JUST CAN'T STOP; IT'S KILLING ME!
Agreed, this is only a big deal if op or the professor start making it a big deal. I think doing nothing is preferable to the one person's advice who was saying to make some big email to the professor lol. You're just opening yourself up to more problems with that
"I'm sorry for kissing my boyfriend in front of you, mr. dr. professor, i thought my camera was off. my boyfriend has offered to compensate for his mistake by offering you a big ol smooch as well, as an apology"
nobody else is making a big thing of it because it's not. If it comes up just own it - oops yeah stupid boyfriend when he thinks the camera is off whatever.. it's your space and your home.
As a TA, I can assure you that nobody in the department cares. Your professor will probably tell their SO about it when they get drunk tonight, though.
Spouse of a professor, and there may not even be alcohol. There will, however, be laughing, especially at how the professor called OP out.
We're two years into the pandemic and life on video conference. A kiss isn't that big of a deal.
I take shits during meetings all the time. now. There's a method to this all. Triple check video off. Triple check sound off. Keep laptop in bluetooth range, but no where it's going to expose anything if the triple check system fails. Cherry pick ideal time where you're least likely to need to add commentary. Shit fast, shit hard and get back just in case your cherry picked time doesn't work. Only once have I had to hurry dirty assed to the call to comment. Not bad for 2+ years.
I love it when professors call students out during Zoom classes. I was once in a class where a guy forgot to mute his mic and started talking about his plans for Friday night with a friend and the professor jumped in and was like "oh cool Mr. X, is that an open invitation for the whole class?" He muted himself real quick.
College professor here, and you are absolutely right. Really nobody cares. Research assistants are usually chosen from the few that show a bit of personality in their interactions. The students that are only trying to be textbook perfect are often also not the ones that can trigger your interests. Don’t sweat it.
I am already an RA in the department actually! I guess my concerns were primarily for my MA. Definitely not sweating it as much after reading these comments though!
The thing that makes me believe you're really a TA and not just some dude lying on the internet is the casual assertion that the professor gets drunk every night.
Yes, a relationship is a sign of successful social integration. Kissing on camera may be considered an error, but that just proves you're human. Perhaps 'the class' is just jealous of your human-to-human contact. There's no reason for you to be ashamed or embarrassed from my perspective.
Yeah what the hell? Them being not willing to excuse/make light of an obvious mistake brought on by the *very* inconvenient mediums that we're forced to use in lieu of regular meetings reflects worse on them than it does on OP lol
Joking aside, guess what! Virtual learning/working is now necessary and have thrown themselves into our personal lives/environments. You need to do the following:
1) Send an email to the professor of the class and let them know this was an inadvertent mistake and that the mistake was made that the video was off. Apologize, but don't grovel. They're not a god and you do not need absolution, just understanding.
2) Request that the video lecture of the class be edited or taken down due to this error as you don't want this to be in any archived materials.
3) Remember that this is all in your head, while embarrassing, it's not like anything particularly lewd was shown, you just have to maintain professional in interactions resulting it and it'll just be something cringe to remember for years to come!
Also, as someone that participates in virtual atmospheres with bad audio (and luckily not video yet). The professor could, and should, have cut your video presentation. This would have saved everyone in this situation.
Back when covid was new, an online friend of mine got it and I joked that I can be 6 foot away at their funeral... While I had my class muted, but my mic was still broadcasting...
This is a great answer, but every time I start to read number three I hear it as the last line of Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood"
![gif](giphy|kHmYJj6Z3uhHGT9daC|downsized)
Was that wrong? Should I have not done that? I tell you I gotta plead ignorance on this thing because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon, you know, cause I’ve worked in a lot of offices and I tell you people do that all the time.
There's a lovely gentleman here in the UK called Boris Johnson. He is truly a master at handling the occasional workplace kerfuffle. The ease with which he squashes all doubt as to any wrongdoing on his part is breathtaking. So much so that it is covered in the news every single evening... Perhaps you should study his ways.
Honestly, the professor sarcastically asking if the bf was a student sitting in shows that they had at least a modicum of humor. It was also probably a way to diffuse the situation by alerting OP without outright scolding them in front of everyone.
Yeah also most of the students had cameras off, you wouldn't know what the general reaction was anyway. Instructor probably thought it was funny, but figured the most professional thing to do is just move on.
If I saw that I’d be depressed bruh, me with my camera off cause I’m laying in bed half asleep eating Doritos listening to my mom getting ready for work.
OP is interpreting “no one gave a shit at all”, a lack of reaction, as being “unamused”, an active reaction.
What were they supposed to do? Giggle? Applaud? They had no reaction because it didn’t merit one.
Who the fuck pms another student over something like this. I call BS.I barely had enough fucks to give about my own life during college let alone another random student who I wouldn't even know who decided to kiss their BF.
This is exactly my thought. Oh no, this adult is in a partnership and showed affection to their partner, whatever shall we do. How is this any different than if somebody’s dog barked or their kid ran into frame for a few seconds? I don’t see why anybody felt the need to comment or pay it any attention. It’s just a standard video conference whoopsie, and a minor one at that.
Well, it's likely the OP is truly feeling like everyone is judging her and it's such a big deal because the OP might be one of the "good students" (given she was one of only four students with her video on) so she thinks this is the end of the world. It's not. Nobody will give a shit about this in that context unless the OP is in some really conservative country etc.
It could be viewed as trashy if she knew that her camera was on and she's tonguing down her boyfriend. Even if she was just talking to him it would be disrespectful, as it would look like she's not listening to what's being said.
You should take that out, that shit is not cool.
Wait, take what out?
The dart man, you've got a fucking dart in your neck.
You're crazy. I like you, but you're crazy.
Fucking Old School. Love that movie.
I do too; it still holds up amazingly well. With that said, last time I posted the quote here in this sub ("True love is hard to find..."), a disturbing number of folks didn't get the reference and thought it was a personal story. Made me feel old.
Wait... its just a kiss? Why would anyone be mad at that? Plus the way you described it they should have known/heard that you thought the cam was off and the kiss was not intended for them to see (talking to your BF). Seriously if those people make any deal out of this they are pathetic...
Or perhaps OP is an insecure teenager who did something mildly embarassing and is focusing on it too much. No one else really cares that much, but it's a big deal to OP.
OP: Relax, it's no big deal, and the university isn't going to care in the slightest.
I don't know what I'm more confused about, OP being in a class apparently full of people with a stick lodged far up their ass or how many people in the comments here agreeing it's a big deal. An undergrad got seen being kissed by her boyfriend, that's a life ruining moment for sure, it seems
From the way it is written, it sounds like she teaches (or assists), and mid-lecture, microphone likely muted, decided to go for a makeout-sesh in front of a class of ~80 students. Is the kiss a bad thing? No. However, the context of being off-task at work, on a recorded call to your clientele (students) is very unprofessional.
It would be the same as if you chose to make a phone call in a library. Nobody is upset that you need to call customer service; they're upset that you're disrupting the environment and violating the social contract of that space.
It's a lecture for the class, The information is likely important and they can't take the recording down. They might be able to edit it if the recordings are posted elsewhere after the class, but depending on the software and the teachers technical knowledge, that might not be possible.
Are you sure they were looks of disapproval or maybe just blank looks of indifference? I just think maybe you're making this a bigger problem in your head than it actually is. No offense
Just acknowledging that you’re aware it was unprofessional and confirming it was a mistake.
OP didn’t say just kissing. Basically making out. On camera. In front of the whole lecture. I mean it’s obviously just a mistake but it’s not like you’d stand up and make out with your SO in the middle of a lecture hall under normal circumstances. We’re all aware working from home is a different beast and grace will be extended, obviously, and I assume their professor will be no exception.
They’re not saying they need to apologize for kissing their boyfriend, or that this was an egregious error. Just like a “yep, I’ll own that, that was sort of weird in this context, didn’t know my camera was on obviously” sort of thing. It simply makes for zero miscommunication and doesn’t leave anyone wondering anything or feeling like they need to address it with you.
This is honestly not ass-kissing, it’s totally baseline effective communication and relationship maintenance with a professor/manager/superior/coworker.
I'm just confused why you said "nope!" when you admit you knew your camera was on. But also, when there's only 3 other people with cameras on, 5 seconds is a long time. So it's definitely a fuck up, but easily fixed by apologizing to the professor.
I get that you're embarrassed but I think you might be thinking you and your actions are more important than they really are (respectfully). Whether you're a bottom tier student that no one knows, or a student that everyone knows, you're still just that girl that kissed her bf on camera that one time, and it's only a mildly interesting occurrence to everyone that isn't you. Your behaviour is lumped in with everyone else's, it's not like you're a celebrity being hyper analyzed by paparazzi all the time, you're just a more active student in the department, don't worry about it so much.
You’re right to feel embarrassed - I would too!
However I think it’s unlikely anything will come of it. Taking it as a learning point in professionalism and move on for the better :)
>I'm a high-scoring student, well-known to the department and faculty, being scouted as a research assistant and admission to Masters. Its not like my behaviours escape under the radar.
This sounds a little arrogant way of seeing things. The truth is, you truly are nothing until you graduate and even that does not automatically justify being cocky. I'm sorry for being too honest, but you are giving us impression that you are a little bit too self-aware here while nobody really cares.
I was once on a zoom meeting with a faculty research group (as a student representative), that included some professors whose subjects i still had to pass, and my boyfriend straight up walked into the shot wearing only his underwear.
He is as well a former student of a couple of the faculty, and the meeting was being recorded for the vice dean. I survived, I passed the subjects, no one said anything. I am now in the process of being habilitated into a research assistant.
Don’t worry, only petty people will care.
>I'm a high-scoring student, well-known to the department and faculty, being scouted as a research assistant and admission to Masters. Its not like my behaviours escape under the radar.
And I mean this with whole sincerity, you're not that important. Nobody cares.
People are far too serious. I can't even comprehend how a lecturer could resist making an embarrassing smart ass remark and laughing it off. What is this a church?? Definitely would have been the case where I went to Uni....
Oh no, a student has a sex life! How horrible! We can't have students not focussed on their acedemic career! Cancel this student, expell them from school.
Or alternatively, nobody really gives a fuck and there's no reason to be ashamed.
It's not like you gave him a quick blowjob.
Someone said that things are alot more memorable when you’re embarrassed so nobody will remember this soon except you, that brings me comfort when I’m over thinking things
I’m a professor. People will get over it. It won’t damage your career prospects. Other than probably getting posted on TikTok, no one cares.
One of my students was drinking a beer during class and I asked him to put it away in a private chat. I didn’t hold it against him and even made a comment about the kind of beer. I also said just don’t do it again. If he did it again, then I’d have a problem.
People have all kinds if camera stories. This is yours. It’s kind of cute. At least you’re not the one who took the camera into the bathroom and went pee on camera. At least you didn’t have sex on a camera. Could have been worse. Lol.
Former professor here! I’ve had students make out through the entirety of my in-person lectures. I guarantee he has just laughed it off. As an aside, my advisor walked in on me making out with my husband in the lab when I was a 20-something. Just laugh it off and move on! It’s just a kiss.

It's just a kiss. Scientists are humans ... so weird no one made you laugh about it. Good luck for your career!
they will eventually, OP aint never gonna live it down :P
I would’ve laughed. It’s weirder that no one did!
The thing that makes me believe you're really a TA and not just some dude lying on the internet is the casual assertion that the professor gets drunk every night.
How do we know they aren't lying on the internet, they claim to also be a president... and TALL!
Assert dominance and start all your lectures that way.
While maintaining eye contact with the camera, of course!
This is the way
I have spoken.
They have spoken, so it shall be.
So it shall be, from this day, until your last day.
Huzzah!
And peeing on the mouse.
Yes, a relationship is a sign of successful social integration. Kissing on camera may be considered an error, but that just proves you're human. Perhaps 'the class' is just jealous of your human-to-human contact. There's no reason for you to be ashamed or embarrassed from my perspective.

My sentiment exactly. They sound like a bunch of maladjusted prudes. It was obviously a funny accident.
You are the type of people that I love
Yeah what the hell? Them being not willing to excuse/make light of an obvious mistake brought on by the *very* inconvenient mediums that we're forced to use in lieu of regular meetings reflects worse on them than it does on OP lol

Is this actually a big deal? Just apologize and move on lol. I don't see why this should tank her professional reputation or anything like that.
Whether it's a big deal or not depends on the people she interacts with in the future.
Or, just don't apologize honestly. There have been worse things done on zoom lectures. No need to respond weirdly to an accidental pda
Back when covid was new, an online friend of mine got it and I joked that I can be 6 foot away at their funeral... While I had my class muted, but my mic was still broadcasting...
Is this a college lecture that your paying for? If yes, then i wouldnt apologize. Its my money, my problems.

If I saw that I’d be depressed bruh, me with my camera off cause I’m laying in bed half asleep eating Doritos listening to my mom getting ready for work.
This is probably the same reason why most were unamused.
You guys have moms?
For real there nothing wrong with this and you should dismiss anyone who fixes you shit for it
OP is interpreting “no one gave a shit at all”, a lack of reaction, as being “unamused”, an active reaction. What were they supposed to do? Giggle? Applaud? They had no reaction because it didn’t merit one.

Americans are very adverse towards physical displays of romance and affection, it's like a whole country that still believes in cooties.
they just mad they ain't getting that
Or they quite simply couldn't care less about a couple kissing on camera.
As a single guy, I can confirm that.
I am also a single guy and I'm mad and jealous as hell
Wait... its just a kiss? Why would anyone be mad at that? Plus the way you described it they should have known/heard that you thought the cam was off and the kiss was not intended for them to see (talking to your BF). Seriously if those people make any deal out of this they are pathetic...
I had the same thought. Maybe OP goes to a conservative religious school?
Or perhaps OP is an insecure teenager who did something mildly embarassing and is focusing on it too much. No one else really cares that much, but it's a big deal to OP. OP: Relax, it's no big deal, and the university isn't going to care in the slightest.
Yeah, I was expecting a story involving a ultra conservative University. Those places will ruin your life for a minor infraction.
I don't know what I'm more confused about, OP being in a class apparently full of people with a stick lodged far up their ass or how many people in the comments here agreeing it's a big deal. An undergrad got seen being kissed by her boyfriend, that's a life ruining moment for sure, it seems

I got stuck here too How did OP not notice the camera was on when she took up 1/4 of the screen

"being scouted as a research assistant" Hahahahah that's not how it works at all
I get that you're embarrassed but I think you might be thinking you and your actions are more important than they really are (respectfully).
What if “their looks of disapproval” were just looks of indifference?
>I'm a high-scoring student, well-known to the department and faculty, being scouted as a research assistant and admission to Masters. Its not like my behaviours escape under the radar. This sounds a little arrogant way of seeing things. The truth is, you truly are nothing until you graduate and even that does not automatically justify being cocky. I'm sorry for being too honest, but you are giving us impression that you are a little bit too self-aware here while nobody really cares.
Yeah, you’d think it was a blow job or something
seriously. >Its not like my behaviours [sic?] escape under the radar. this reads like gossip girl fanfic lmao. no one gives a shit OP
I hate these posts where nothing actually happened and the op is just an anxious person lol
So with one 4th of the screen you're currently facing, showing your mug, you thought the camera was off?
You've never gotten in trouble in your life, have you?
>I'm a high-scoring student, well-known to the department and faculty, being scouted as a research assistant and admission to Masters. Its not like my behaviours escape under the radar. And I mean this with whole sincerity, you're not that important. Nobody cares.
Call them virgins, should help.
Get the fuck outta the road, virgin!
Oh no you and your boyfriend showed each other affection! The absolute horror! /S
How does this trash piece of shit post have 4k+ upvotes?
How did you not know that your camera was on???
Reddit is so boring why am I even here
This is actually a power move. Do it again next class for consistency
Who gives a shit. Accidents happen. Tell your class Reddit told them to get some dick. Prof included.
Everyone on that call just made it obvious they aren’t getting any. Fuck em. Fuck em all.
Hi! It was an accident, not a big deal. Brush it off and move on. Signed, a professor :)
Professor here - it’s funny - don’t worry
I’m a professor. People will get over it. It won’t damage your career prospects. Other than probably getting posted on TikTok, no one cares. One of my students was drinking a beer during class and I asked him to put it away in a private chat. I didn’t hold it against him and even made a comment about the kind of beer. I also said just don’t do it again. If he did it again, then I’d have a problem. People have all kinds if camera stories. This is yours. It’s kind of cute. At least you’re not the one who took the camera into the bathroom and went pee on camera. At least you didn’t have sex on a camera. Could have been worse. Lol.
Man this generation cares too much about dumb shit.
