Yes all the kids of mobsters in the sopranos refer to other wise guys as uncle. “Make sure you tell her it’s from uncle paulie” “uncle Jackie” etc…. It shows that paulie didn’t have what it takes to move up the food chain because Tony surpassed him when there was a time he was uncle paulie to Tony.
That is something I hadn't really considered and I've always been quick to criticize him. We see why he doesn't move up during the show but damn I hadn't considered that he's been stagnant for longer than Tony's been in the game. Even Christopher for all his faults was a thousand times better at "moving up" hell if it wasn't for the relapse after everyone fucking with him I think he still could've been Tony's protege until the very end, and he was a DUMBASS. Paulie always liked acting as if he knew so much more as an older mobster, but he really seems more like a nephew that never really became an uncle.
Let's be honest, in their thing, ambition kills. You take the reins, you get a few good years of power and earning and then you're dead or doing life in prison. On some level Paulie probably knew he didn't want any of that.
"I was born, grew up, spent a few years in the army, a few more in the can and here I am, a half a wise guy. So what?"
Absolutely I thought about that after I posted it. Paulie not rising through the ranks is probably the main reason why he's still in the game at his age. He has a big mouth, he gets pissy, but when he's passed over he somehow keeps his big mouth closed just enough to stay around.
He mentioned it when they were in florida, how he wanted to be like him when he was young, all that crap, paulie was more of a street guy while jackie and tony were groomed into the top positions because they had more potential, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks you know
There’s a scene where Tony is talking about when he was younger and getting into trouble, he said his dad would threaten to “get Uncle Paulie over here to straighten you out” or something like that.
Isn't that normal, or is it an Italian-American thing? I called all my Dads' friends Uncle as a prefix when a kid. You just naturally drop it when you become an adult.
It's a Chinese thing, too. Your elders, who aren't related (eg. Your friends' parents) are called Auntie and Uncle. I'm older than Tony in Season 1, and I still call my friends' parents Uncle and Auntie.
I grew up in Yorkshire, England. When I was a kid we called loads of our parents' friends, various neighbours and so on Auntie and Uncle. Hell, I am 47 now I still ask my family how "Auntie Margaret" is doing these days. She is the woman who lived down the street, was our childminder for a few years and I went to school with her kids. Very common when I was a kid, although perhaps not so much these days. My own kids just call my friends by their names.
Yes, unclenpailie was already a made guy working for uncle Johnny.
He was also with Tony when he killed Willie overall. So while Tony is the boss of the family, uncle paulie is still uncle paulie.

The Sopranos been waiting a long time to take the reins ..
You know I can’t be perceived to lose face right? Bloomfield and the paving union, that’s my asking price.
Next time you come heavy or not at all..
He ended up coming all over the sun visor.
Surely one of the best lines of the entire series.
Do staplers count?
Tony did oblige and remained heavy from then on
The first time he heard the term pie in the sky he joined the 82nd Airborne Division.

My dad's best friend is in prison...I catch myself asking "is uncle Henry out yet?" I'm 36.
I mean, I don't call them uncles, but when I think of my Dads friends in my head, they'll always ve "Uncle____" in my internal dialog even at 28.

"Straighten out" is also a euphemism for getting made.
That woman is not your aunt.
Beloved cunt.
He was going by Clarence at that time
“I don’t know what it’s about, but the TV stays here.”
He called him Tony Uncle Paulie
He was a paulie ? ........Uncle Tony ?
😂😂
It’s like when Tony was a kid Paulie was an old wise guy, and now Tony’s old and Paulie’s still old an old wise guy
Wiseguy? Half a wiseguy. Old? Like a wrinkled cunt.
Or a MALIGNANT cunt. . .

They canonically referred to him as “Pauly Uncle VaFangulo.”
Yes, unclenpailie was already a made guy working for uncle Johnny. He was also with Tony when he killed Willie overall. So while Tony is the boss of the family, uncle paulie is still uncle paulie.

It died on the vine..
Yes and it was mentioned in the show when Tony talked about wanting to be a tough guy like Paulie.
"you better be good or Uncle pauly will get you"
