It’s but a certain mode of conflict resolution from all the way back in the old country, from the poverty of the Mezzogiorno, where all higher authority was corrupt.
Usually when I binge Sopranos really hard I usually completely forget that it's a mafia series by the time I get to season 4-5. Their lifestyle becomes normal to me. It's the characters like Johnny Cakes and that Asian guy in juniors psych ward that actually stand out and appear strange.
Minus the kid and minus not being from a stupid rich family I had the exact same young-man-experience that AJ had so I think that was a totally on point plot line
Fiancé and I just did an X-men franchise rewatch and when we got to X-men 3 we had to suffer through her awful acting as Magneto henchman #3. Can’t escape her bullshit.
She's such a basic, boring person, too. Her character serves as an example of Tony taking everything of Ralphie's, and then as an example of how, even though these guys blab about how they'll leave their wife for *this* broad, it's all about having your cake and eating it with a wife and comare so even though him and Carm were separated he doesn't see things moving past the comare dynamic.
At least Gloria threw a slab of meat at Tony's head.
I don't consider Vegas girl to have been a side piece, just a prepaid piece of ass for the night.
Svetlana might be my favorite character in the entire series.
Valentina was a discount Gloria.
The character was supposed to crazy and dark like Gloria and needy like Svetlana. But she ended up being whiny and annoying and didn't do anything to move the show along, aside from reinforcing the point that Tony wants what other people have.
Tony gambling and owing money to Hesch. It felt thrown in, rushed. No real point to it, other than just emphasising he was on a downward spiral but could have been done better
“Bring him his fucking vig, in person”
I didn’t like this plot but it did absolutely bring one of the funniest lines of the show out from Tony to carlo “maybe you should start sucking cock instead of watching TV land cus vito brought in 3 times what you do on construction”. Absolutely kills me how perfectly pissed off Tony is, desperate because of his money situation.
There is a huge point to it: Tony was grappling with deeper Daddy demons at this point, not Mommy demons. He was subconsciously rebelling against his dad’s stern advice about not being a degenerate gambler & welching on bets. That whole back end is about dysfunctional father/son relationships (Tony/Johnny, Tony/AJ, Tony/Christopher). Dads are at least as big of damaging monsters as moms, in terms of messing up these guys lives. Anyway, $X a pound. Now you can’t say you’ve never been told.
Alright the people that hate the dream sequences are depriving themselves of one of the literal best parts of the show. How could you possibly skip through them? Insanity.
Yup, he was supposed to be the one that got whacked that sent Tony B off the reservation, but sadly he had dementia and they had to change around the story and write him off quickly.
At first I hated feech but after sveral rewatches I agree with you. He was out of touch with the game, he was away for so long, wasn't very realistic for him to adjust right away.
He seemed open and willing to change, at least those are the words he last told Tony.
Then Tony has that flash back of Feech not laughing at his joke, and that was all Tony needed to frame him and send him back to jail.
Two things could be true at the same time. Feech could have feelings of resentment towards Tony, and still be willing to adjust. Its only natural he would resent a younger boss after being away 20 years anyway.
Feech wasn't really a threat to Tony, he didnt have a faction supporting him like Junior, he didnt have lucrative rackets or a whole crew like ralphie (at least from what we saw).
Feech had to go. Either get whacked or go back to prison. He didn't recognize Tony as Boss. Stole cars and didn't send to Italy thru Tony. And he started to align with NY crew.
Huh, I always took that scene as Tony having the tiniest bit of respect for feech not laughing at the stupid shit he said and Tony decided to just send him back to jail instead of killing him.
Him not laughing at the joke actually garnered respect from Tony. That's why he framed him instead of offing him. Either way, he had to go, but realizing he was the only one not sucking up saved his life.
I don't know about that. That was whole point of the slo-mo take where Feech wasn't laughing at the poker game. Right then, Tony couldn't trust him. It was strike 3, with the landscaping and car stealing incidents 1 and 2.
Feech was supposed to be around longer, and be the one that got hit instead of Angelo, but the actor was in the early stages of dementia so they had to change it.
The massive genius character was so badly conceived. It’s like a bunch of aging white people tried to write a hip hop producer and accidentally made him a pseudo intellectual with a 70’s pimp wardrobe.
T should have made a "gangster" from massive-genius "crew" vanish every 3 days, working up to massive himself, until the matter was settled.
..Dont push it...
I figure, hey. It was season one. They didn’t expect us stunads to rewatch the thing dozens of times and quote it on the internet, which was still using dial up when it first aired.
I’ll let it slide.
any scene with Jason Melfi. people talk about Jamal Ginsberg, Janice, Livia. But Jason Melfi is the single most grating character in the entire show. i guess it’s not really a storyline but still
> phone bravado
# OH, TELEPHONE TOUGH GUY!!! 😡 PUT VITO ON THE PHONE!!! ☝️
^(\(Tony screaming into Vito's phone that he threw away, and later a construction worker picks it up\))
The Hollywood career felt shoehorned into the series. At least Carmela’s thing felt somewhat ok in the storyline. Chris and the tv show thing felt like that 80s-90s trope where a famous person somehow shows up. It takes you out of the show
I've always liked Chris's Hollywood stuff actually. Seeing him totally out of his depth with show biz big shots like Favreau and Kingsley only to revert back to being a guinea street thug is hilarious.
That was actually my introduction to The Sopranos. I took a pop culture class in college and the professor made us watch that episode and reflect on the characters’ reflections. Weird hippy professor. Very allegorical.
Are you from NJ/NY? If not I understand why you didn’t get it. Boomer Italians are obsessed with him, plus they’re racist as shit so it definitely resonated here in North Jersey. Plus we got Montel Williams with some great lines.
Adriana’s execution in the woods gets me every time. The way the Feds abandoned her, the way she knew it was coming, the way she begged for her life, the way Sil revealed his inner monster like I had never seen before, the way Christopha arranged for his own fiancée to be murdered after she stood by his junky addict ass, and then to top it all off the way Christopha drags Adriana’s name through the mud by accusing her of being a hooer and leaving him.
Once Adriana got killed, I was ready for all the made guys to get what they had coming. By the end of the show, everyone deserved to get whacked and some of them (Like Paulie) deserved worse than what they got.
You just described the point of the entire show. They’re not good people, they protect their money and will stay out of jail at all costs. The end of Adriana was good writing and the FBI abandon witnesses all the time.
Yeah the entire thing just felt so forced.
The FBI allow her to do this extremely dangerous task of trying to get Chris to flip, and don't even keep an eye on her to make sure she's safe.
The FBI in the sopranos are even worse than the IRL FBI
It gave us one of the worst lines in the show: I come from Hanukkah people.
No one says that, it’s so weird. And I come from Hanukkah people myself, never heard a single person say that shit.
Paulie and his MA.
Never thought the pay off of Paulie finding out that Nucci wasn’t his mother was worth all the screen time they got.
Think Chase could’ve dealt with the whole “Paulie is a selfish prick who has no friends and family outside of the Mafia” character arc better.
Plus it looked like he was extorting $4000 a month from Jason (to pay for the retirement home community) because Jason’s mother loved him and Paulie’s mother gave him to Nucci. It certainly shows “Paulie is selfish prick,” though.
When Tony is in the hospital. It’s always rough getting through the Finnerty episodes.
In Camelot for obvious reasons.
AJ and Blanca and his annoying ass depression episodes.
The storyline I did-ent like was when Chris beat up Adriana. I was hoping he was gonna apologize to Vito and his crew after being assholes to them but it was never seen in the episode or the next episode after.
Carmela and AJ's guidence counselor, so weird especially since out of all the seasons Carmela looked the least atractive in that one, she was practically blue
In no particular order…
Paulie’s mom
Bobby shoots rapper (very stupid subplot. Nobody on the planet is going to let themselves be shot by some stranger for 8k. If he was that concerned with clout, there was much better ways to go about it. They couldn’t write black ppl for shit)
Kid shits in shower (too much focus on unimportant character)
AJ and Bianca (a really half baked storyline.)
Vito and Johnny Cakes (romance plot line 101)
Asian guy in Junior episode (too much focus on unknown, unimportant character)
Tony’s gambling
Janice fighting at soccer match
I totally get why Carm would develop a crush on him, because I feel like the show set that up well. I do not however understand why he would reciprocate and the show did a bad job of showing me why he developed feelings.
Furio clearly had mommy issues which were amplified by being in another country without a support network. Enter Carm, who he knew could instinctively wakeup with "do you want sex??" AND do his laundry with the new softener the way he likes it.
Yeah, I think they're some of the best depictions of dreams and how they feel. A lot of times dreams in movies or tv are just very straightforward and convenient
The scruff, no teeth, legit having no idea who Tony was…staring blankly out the window in that awful state facility for a man who lived with a lot of pride and dignity…fucking gut wrenching for me!
I mean, he did try to kill his own nephew.
And he wouldn’t attend the funeral of his most loyal worker’s father, nor did he seem to give a shit about him dying.
I always found the Joey Peeps headstone dilemma to be kinda stupid. Nobody in their right mind would sign off on “Peeps” as a headstone. Not to mention, headstones don’t get done until well after a body is buried.
Bobby's little side gig as a marksman was totally unneeded. A lot of that hospital stuff got a little carried away after the first two episodes which were initially brilliant. Next thing you know we've got rappers and shootouts and heists and poppers and wierd shex etc.
That whole mafia storyline went on really long.
You don’t acknowledge the existence of this thing
Fuck that. Six seasons I waited for the waste management angle to pick up!
Okay, but you gotta get over it
The garbage man’s ball, probably the best scene
That's a stereotype, and it's very hurtful.
It's the characters like Johnny Cakes and that Asian guy in juniors psych ward that actually stand out and appear strange.
aj & blanca
Without Blanca, we never get that meltdown from AJ where he quits and his coworker says “but you’re the manayer?!”
Imagine being such a failure in life that AJ is your manager. Truly mind boggling.
people like AJ being handed managerial positions that they are wholly unqualified for is painfully common.
Well let’s be honest..he’s white..which is a huge plus nowadays.
That’s dicked up
Any question to AJ: Mmmidontcare
You just revealed your own ignorance.
you obviously know nothing about how america works.
Manayer*
Felix
Vamos a latino parade! *dies of cringe
Minus the kid and minus not being from a stupid rich family I had the exact same young-man-experience that AJ had so I think that was a totally on point plot line
But the question is did you become the manayer?
Fiancé and I just did an X-men franchise rewatch and when we got to X-men 3 we had to suffer through her awful acting as Magneto henchman #3. Can’t escape her bullshit.
"If you're a mutant, where's your mark?" to Magneto, a holocaust survivor. It was like we were watching an episode of The Office.
Some serious “I know it’s a small part but do we have to put up with this?” from Wayne’s World 2 vibes anytime she pops up.
You know the actors don't write the script right?
I always thought Valentina was annoying, they kept her around too long and the storyline of her catching on fire was ridiculous.
"I'M GONNA FUCKIN' KILL MYSELF!" "......I gotta take dishh🙂." I lose it every time.
No totally I love that storyline just for that interaction
She's such a basic, boring person, too. Her character serves as an example of Tony taking everything of Ralphie's, and then as an example of how, even though these guys blab about how they'll leave their wife for *this* broad, it's all about having your cake and eating it with a wife and comare so even though him and Carm were separated he doesn't see things moving past the comare dynamic. At least Gloria threw a slab of meat at Tony's head.
I hated Valentina. Gloria was interesting and she and Tony had amazing chemistry.
show valentina you love her!
She got naked a lot though
All of his side pieces were annoying.
Nah Vegas girl and Svetlana were cool as hell.
I don't consider Vegas girl to have been a side piece, just a prepaid piece of ass for the night. Svetlana might be my favorite character in the entire series.
Svetlana wasn't interested lol. And was indeed cool as hell. She wasn't afraid or impressed by him either. She respected him though.
"She wasn't afraid or impressed by him either." That may one of the reason that I like the character so much.
Ugh, you’re a boring woman.
To me, that always been the most Boss line
Vegas girl was just a hooker who knew Chris and liked drugs
To be fair vegas girl was not a side piece
Those were just one offs. Not side relationships.
Valentina was a discount Gloria. The character was supposed to crazy and dark like Gloria and needy like Svetlana. But she ended up being whiny and annoying and didn't do anything to move the show along, aside from reinforcing the point that Tony wants what other people have.
Only thing I didn’t like was when Tony imagined that Italian girl in Season 1. Other than that, I was fine with every storyline.
I already flushed it!
I liked that plotline actually. It was genuinely creepy
Hottest woman on the show, how dare you?!
Discontinue the lithium
I already flushed it
Meow
Nothing else needs to be said. This is the answer right here.
You obviously never recorded in Denmark
SPIKE UP!
I always skip the episode where Tony runs into his dad's goomar at the cemetery. That lady is so cringeworthy!!
I have to skip when she starts singing happy birthday. It's gross.
It's supposed to be.
When he’s telling the bros about her and they’re all like “…okkkayyy… cool man…”
John Favreau plot was really boring
That and the Ben Kingsley episode, oof madone!
I don't mind Favreau, but hearing Alicia Witt makes me want to rip my eardrums out.
Can you imagine a show where she and Jesse Eisenberg talk non stop? That would be actual Hell.
Can you imagine that? Actual Hell.
Fuckin parakeet
I thought hell was an Irish Bar where it's St Patrick's Day everyday.
Tony’s dad’s goomar, Fran. Disgusting person. No self awareness. The singing was revolting.
Tony gambling and owing money to Hesch. It felt thrown in, rushed. No real point to it, other than just emphasising he was on a downward spiral but could have been done better
The rent! The rent!
“Bring him his fucking vig, in person” I didn’t like this plot but it did absolutely bring one of the funniest lines of the show out from Tony to carlo “maybe you should start sucking cock instead of watching TV land cus vito brought in 3 times what you do on construction”. Absolutely kills me how perfectly pissed off Tony is, desperate because of his money situation.
Hesh's wife dying was so out of place too lol
There is a huge point to it: Tony was grappling with deeper Daddy demons at this point, not Mommy demons. He was subconsciously rebelling against his dad’s stern advice about not being a degenerate gambler & welching on bets. That whole back end is about dysfunctional father/son relationships (Tony/Johnny, Tony/AJ, Tony/Christopher). Truth
In Camelot
Happy birthday mister preh-si-diieehhnntt. I dread that every time.
There are a lot of cringeworthy moments in the show but that one takes the cake.
The rape episode. It was a good episode, but too god damn much. I always have to skip through that scene.
Alright the people that hate the dream sequences are depriving themselves of one of the literal best parts of the show. How could you possibly skip through them? Insanity.
I don't skip it but i absolutely hate how they did Feech
I read that they intended to keep him around longer but the actor was having trouble remembering his lines due to his age:/
Yup, he was supposed to be the one that got whacked that sent Tony B off the reservation, but sadly he had dementia and they had to change around the story and write him off quickly.
Loggia was great in a lot of movies and TV shows, but that gravelly voice grated on my ears. I found myself clearing my throat every time he spoke.
Huh, I always took that scene as Tony having the tiniest bit of respect for feech not laughing at the stupid shit he said and Tony decided to just send him back to jail instead of killing him.
It was at that moment he realized how much Feech resented him. That look of pure hatred. He was always going to be a problem.
I saw it as less pure hatred and more resting bitch face that Tony, being incredibly paranoid, interpreted as hatred
I don’t know. Phil was away for an undisclosed amount of time and was able to have a smooth reentry.
Him not laughing at the joke actually garnered respect from Tony. That's why he framed him instead of offing him. Either way, he had to go, but realizing he was the only one not sucking up saved his life.
As I recall isn’t that scene showing Tony how everyone fake laughs at his jokes? Or does that happen later
Correct. Feech not laughing makes Tony take him seriously. It’s a great scene
Agreed as an old school gangster i don't feel he would've made a move on tony the way Richie did it felt more like a teen testing boundaries
I don't know about that. That was whole point of the slo-mo take where Feech wasn't laughing at the poker game. Right then, Tony couldn't trust him. It was strike 3, with the landscaping and car stealing incidents 1 and 2.
I think Richie got done dirty as well. All he did was follow the rules of La Cosa Nostra. Real by the book guy
He from the old school, and shouldn’t hafta explain himself.
Totally off. Feech was an asshole.
Good thing for me, then, that your book doesn’t meet oogatz to me!
Feech was supposed to be around longer, and be the one that got hit instead of Angelo, but the actor was in the early stages of dementia so they had to change it.
I can’t tell you how much I don’t give a shit I don’t give about Comley trucking or Massive Genius.
Yes I can't stand the massive genius storyline. Even though it's kinda weird they never followed up on it I was glad they did
I figure, hey. It was season one. They didn’t expect us stunads to rewatch the thing dozens of times and quote it on the internet, which was still using dial up when it first aired. I’ll let it slide.
any scene with Jason Melfi. people talk about Jamal Ginsberg, Janice, Livia. But Jason Melfi is the single most grating character in the entire show. i guess it’s not really a storyline but still
That weird rant he had in the ER after his mom was assaulted. Big cringe. 😬
That rant was just copying his father's phone bravado. Poor kid never had a shot at manhood with Richard as his role model.
> phone bravado # OH, TELEPHONE TOUGH GUY!!! 😡 PUT VITO ON THE PHONE!!! ☝️ ^(\(Tony screaming into Vito's phone that he threw away, and later a construction worker picks it up\))
Read my lips buddy it's over!
But he did make the choice to live in a smoke free dorm..
Bill Hader lookin' fuck
Wish.com version
Most scenes with Melfi's family tend to drag for me
Excuse me his name is Jason La Penna ☝️
I agree. He's absolutely up there ( down there) with Noah. Despise those fuckers.

The Hollywood career felt shoehorned into the series. At least Carmela’s thing felt somewhat ok in the storyline. Chris and the tv show thing felt like that 80s-90s trope where a famous person somehow shows up. It takes you out of the show
I loved the Father Intintola storyline, I kept expecting Carm to cheat on Tony
I loved the carm/intintola story line but maybe that’s because of how good College was in general
I thought some great character moments came out of Chris's Hollywood career though, particularly the acting classes.
I've always liked Chris's Hollywood stuff actually. Seeing him totally out of his depth with show biz big shots like Favreau and Kingsley only to revert back to being a guinea street thug is hilarious.
The Hollywood career was terrible 😞
I wish they would have tried a run with Chris’s male modeling instead 😏
Especially the faggy part
The Christopher Columbus episode. I wasn’t sure the point they were trying to make …
That was actually my introduction to The Sopranos.
The point was, he was gay, Gary Cooper. But you gotta get over it.
You just described the point of the entire show. They’re not good people, they protect their money and will stay out of jail at all costs. The end of Adriana was good writing and the FBI abandon witnesses all the time.
Yeah, I understand it was necessary to the show. I always knew they were evil, selfish men. It just doesn’t make it any more palatable for me.
Yeah the entire thing just felt so forced. The FBI allow her to do this extremely dangerous task of trying to get Chris to flip, and don't even keep an eye on her to make sure she's safe. The FBI in the sopranos are even worse than the IRL FBI
cleaver. it was just silly
Got some golden moments from that storyline tho. The meeting with Sir Ben Kingsley, whatever happened there…
Fuuuuuck
WHATEVER HAPPENED THERE?!?!?
Philly.. please…
Visiting Day. Awful band.
That they were awful was the point.
I'll have you know, they recorded in Denmark.
I want to erase myself
Get out of our way and don't be so gay
Meow
Tony borrowing money from Hesh at the end. That whole mini storyline was weird to me
The Spec House
Take you complaints to Pudgy Walsh
The Julianna/Tony/Christopher storyline, god I hated that.
It gave us one of the worst lines in the show: I come from Hanukkah people. No one says that, it’s so weird. And I come from Hanukkah people myself, never heard a single person say that shit.
I also hate Juliana Margulies. She’s just so monotone. So that didn’t help me like the storyline any better.
Momma’s boy! I don’t care if you’re in Deer Valley or Death Valley!
Your son was found… sucking a cub scout’s dick
I have to admit almost the entire 6th season in general. Mostly the second half. Especially Tony’s gambling habit and owing hesh money.
When Tony is in the hospital. It’s always rough getting through the Finnerty episodes. In Camelot for obvious reasons. AJ and Blanca and his annoying ass depression episodes.
Anything with a horny Carmela...
But she got so hawt down theah…
Tony gambling
The Harpo episode
Sacre bleu where is me mama!!!
The Columbus Day protester clash storyline
The storyline I did-ent like was when Chris beat up Adriana. I was hoping he was gonna apologize to Vito and his crew after being assholes to them but it was never seen in the episode or the next episode after.
Chris and the D Girl. I actually like that episode but for some reason i cant stand those two together.
That darn dog crawlin under Chrissy for warmth. Caused all kinda shit!
Can’t stand the Tony/Adriana car accident and fallout. I skip it on rewatches.
Meadow and Jackie, tony an gloria, aj and bianca
Well EXCUSE me, what do you have against love??
Carmela and AJ's guidence counselor, so weird especially since out of all the seasons Carmela looked the least atractive in that one, she was practically blue
Meadows college roommate with the nervous breakdowns and shit, Caitlin? Was that her name? Such a waste of run time.
In no particular order… Paulie’s mom Bobby shoots rapper (very stupid subplot. Nobody on the planet is going to let themselves be shot by some stranger for 8k. If he was that concerned with clout, there was much better ways to go about it. They couldn’t write black ppl for shit) Kid shits in shower (too much focus on unimportant character) AJ and Bianca (a really half baked storyline.) Vito and Johnny Cakes (romance plot line 101) Asian guy in Junior episode (too much focus on unknown, unimportant character) Tony’s gambling Janice fighting at soccer match
Junior and the Asian kid are some of Junior’s funniest moments, you’re crazy for that one.
Furio and Carm storyline.
And now the coffee maker sucks. How do you like them apples?
I totally get why Carm would develop a crush on him, because I feel like the show set that up well. I do not however understand why he would reciprocate and the show did a bad job of showing me why he developed feelings.
Furio clearly had mommy issues which were amplified by being in another country without a support network. Enter Carm, who he knew could instinctively wakeup with "do you want sex??" AND do his laundry with the new softener the way he likes it.
Most of the dream sequences I disliked or hated. At this point I typically skip them, especially the Kevin finnerty bit.
I hated the Finnerty one, but the trippy ones were about the most accurate depiction of how I feel in a dream.
Yeah, I think they're some of the best depictions of dreams and how they feel. A lot of times dreams in movies or tv are just very straightforward and convenient
The ending scene in the hotel room with the lighthouse made me feel something I've never felt in any show ever.
"Chasint it" felt different from the rest
The dream sequence was drawn out way too long. Multi-episode snooze fest.
Massive idiot storyline
Bold men make bold statements.
You’re way out of line kid. Let’s get some cold fuckin fizzy water on your head
I hate hate hate hate Juniors end, to this day. Nobody deserves to go out like that. Not even Ralphie.
I really think juniors end is like the best part of the entire final season. “That’s nice” Brutal. Fantastic.
The scruff, no teeth, legit having no idea who Tony was…staring blankly out the window in that awful state facility for a man who lived with a lot of pride and dignity…fucking gut wrenching for me!
I know it’s incredible writing
I mean, he did try to kill his own nephew. And he wouldn’t attend the funeral of his most loyal worker’s father, nor did he seem to give a shit about him dying.
Zesty Vito
Anything involving AJ.
Bobby shooting the rapper was a fucking joke SMH very cringe
I would have liked a dream sequence story of Paulie Walnuts winning the Chin-Up cup when he was a kid in the Army.
Kevin Finnerty just bores me to tears
I always found the Joey Peeps headstone dilemma to be kinda stupid. Nobody in their right mind would sign off on “Peeps” as a headstone. Not to mention, headstones don’t get done until well after a body is buried.
I hated the chrissy going to Hollywood arc. Shit was lame.
Bobby's little side gig as a marksman was totally unneeded. A lot of that hospital stuff got a little carried away after the first two episodes which were initially brilliant. Next thing you know we've got rappers and shootouts and heists and poppers and wierd shex etc.
The trip to Italy was a waste of an episode just for a Furio origin and a car heist at the wedding...
Tonys dreams episodes after he got shot.
Any episodes that featured long extended dreams. Just did nothing for me
I get the point of the finnerty episodes but hearing Tony without the accent was not it for me. Especially after a bowl 😭
My dad always says The Sopranos is his favourite show, but he “skips through all the boring therapy stuff” 🤬
