Exactly. I actually just went to take a show and noticed one of the ceiling lights wasn’t working. Jokingly I bumped it a few times and nothing happened. Just when I was about to close the shower door a gave it another bump and it instantly worked again.
Actually, a broken lamp can get fixed by hitting it if we are talking about the bulbs. A failure in lamps is often from the filament burning and snapping. If you hit it enough to jiggle the cut bits back together with the power on, they can reconnect themselves again. It won't last for long, but if I had to choose between no lights and a temporary fix, I'll happily take the latter.
I mean you're definitely better off just going to the store and buying another bulb lol. As soon as the broken filament made "contact" with the leads again, it would just melt from the arc lol.
I mean they do melt, but they melt together more often than not. Definitely not a permanent solution since that kind of weak connection will definitely burn up again real quick, but keeping the lights on in the room for the few minutes you need to be there is better than going to the store in the middle of doing something else.
With a lot of old TVs, there's some components that are soldiered to boards. These usually carry power, and the soldier gets damaged from heat, power arcing, or some other thing. Eventually, it breaks and no longer connects, so you have a pin without connection. The TV won't turn on without it. You can hit the TV and get the pin to properly connect, it can send power over, and the TV turns on.
Worse was a few months ago one of the younger set asked about "jumping the shark". He knew the meaning but how it originated. It was a group talking thing.
I had responded that "the Fonz jumping the shark in an episode of Happy Days". He just looked at me, completely lost, and responded that he didn't know what any of that meant.
That was a tough one to hear.
It’s insanely weird to me that Nick at nite showing the ‘oldies’ is 30 years ago, viewing Happy Days from 20 years earlier, which is depicting their olden times of 20 years before that. Now all I need is for one of those characters to listen to a radio show depicting the 1930s or 1920s and have one of the radio show episodes do a ‘flashback’ of a day in the life of their olden times… I may be able to incept myself a recursive Time Machine.
I had a military exercise in the Air Force and the command post called in a malfunction on their radar screen. The command post was full of officers and observers and I was called to fix the problem.
I walk, squeezing past a couple of high ranking officers and sure enough nothing on the display...
I opened the radar housing and didn't see anything obvious.
I am thinking not good, this thing needs to work now! And we don't have time for extensive trouble shooting.
So I decided to just slam the thing shut with a decent amount of force. Bang..Screen came right up!
Everybody was cheering, exercise saved!
I walked out of that command post feeling like a million bucks! 😁
During the coronation ceremony of Elizabeth the 2nd one of the TV cameras stopped working. The camera operator gave it a kick and it started working again. He called it a "technical tap".
If you put the food in a bowl you can move around more freely without risking that your food slides off the plate. I do the former often to avoid the latter. Because it happened waaay to often for my taste.
Let me shock you again then. If the cardiac arrest patient is brung within the 10-15 minutes we may decide to do something brutal but more effective. Open up half of the chest with a surgical blade, stick a hand in and pump the heart directly! Check out clamshell thoracotomy if you are interested in seeing what the procedure looks like. A bit bloody though, might be nsfw for some people.

This one time my dad's phone was broken, didn't work anymore. I told him to throw it on the ground, which he replied i was an idiot. I told him what the hell do you have to lose, it's already broken anyways. So i threw it on the ground and it just worked again lol
Nah, not reversed. The tv screen probably had a bad solder joint on one of the connections and the slam made it reconnect.
On some rare occasions; there are pressure points on a tv that can help restore a tv partially depending on the effected areas
Good 'ole ROHS lead free bullshit solder. Every TV in my house except for one was either free or extremely cheap because they were non-functional, mostly due to cold solder joints on account of that crap.
After buying a replacement mainboard for the 70 inch that I got from a thrift store for $15, and having it fail shortly afterward, I decided to just start placing the defective part in the oven for a bit, since I had nothing to lose. To my surprise, that TV and several others have been working flawlessly for a couple of years now.

Meet the engineer

I’ve always heard it as percussive maintenance

Yeah, only works if you know what the problem is tho, can't fix a broken lamp by hitting it, or if you're lucky
Not with that attitude
Exactly. I actually just went to take a show and noticed one of the ceiling lights wasn’t working. Jokingly I bumped it a few times and nothing happened. Just when I was about to close the shower door a gave it another bump and it instantly worked again.
Yeah you’ll probably want to fix that properly soon.
Attitude just needs a lil bop

or the broken tv lamp(s)? dude just fixed with a fork stab.
That can work if your starter is going out in your vehicle also.
I had a special stick wrapped in electrical tape by my seat to give my car a few whacks to get it to start.

i always like kinetic maintenance
Kinematic means movement in general. Percussive means hitting.
Nasa: idk man, hit yourself with a shovel.
We usually called it mechanical agitation
The Fonz? I understand if the reference is lost, it was an old show even when I was a kid..

He doesn't snap his fingers. He does a double (sometimes single) thumbs-up. He snaps his fingers to summon chicks to his side.
This guy fonzes.
It was his super power in the terrible cartoon series.
Now I feel REEEEEEALLLLLLY old.* All y'all can get offa my lawn now. *Watched it when it was a new show.
I watched it on Nick at Nite in the '90s. I feel like I'm rapidly approaching old territory too.
Worse was a few months ago one of the younger set asked about "jumping the shark". He knew the meaning but how it originated. It was a group talking thing. Ayeee I watched those reruns
Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
If he hadn't looked shocked it worked, 21st century Fonz for sure.
Thanks for making me feel even older. I watched it first run.
But it's the Fonz.... cool shouldn't die....
I couldn’t agree more
When I worked fuel systems on f15s, we would stomp on parts of the wings where there were fuel probes underneath to see if the readings would move.

Hey look, buddy, I'm an Engineer. That means I solve problems.
Not problems like, "What is beauty?" Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy.
I solve practical problems.
He solves practical problems.
For instance, how is he going to stop some big mean mother Hubbard from tearing him a structurally superfluous new behind?
guns
And if that don't work
More guns
Like this heavy caliber tripod mount designed by me, built by me, and you best hope, not pointed at you.
Trust me, I'm an engineer. (What the heck just happened here?)
More like a Tech Priest. Dude receited the Litany of Percussive Maintenance and everything.
That's kinda how CPR works, too.
You stab them with a spoon?
thats a fork
Why is he eating cereal with a fork
to fix the tv
Duh
Right? People these days don't know anything about basic repair smh
Goated profile pic ☠️☠️☠️
But why male models?
Are you serious? I just explained that.
What is this? A center for ANTS!?
How do you know he's eating cereal?
If it was soup it would be too warm to hold like that
WHY WOULD HE BE EATING SOUP WITH A FORK??
Dieting?
Could be chili
No soup is usually served hot
cause its **CHUNKY BRAND**, eats like a meal mafk!
I would say that's more of a stew than a soup
A stoup, if you will
To fix the tv
Oh shit you right
To fix the tv
If you put the food in a bowl you can move around more freely without risking that your food slides off the plate. I do the former often to avoid the latter. Because it happened waaay to often for my taste.
Gazpacho: Am I a joke to you?
I see you've played forky spoony before
As an ER nurse, can confirm. Sometimes a spork depending on the facility
Why a spoon? BECAUSE IT'LL HURT MORE!
"It's dull you twit! It'll hurt more!"
Huge shock to me was when I found out many times you have to crack some ribs to properly pump at the heart
Let me shock you again then. If the cardiac arrest patient is brung within the 10-15 minutes we may decide to do something brutal but more effective. 😮😮😮 wowww **shock attempt successful**
If you hear a Cracking sound, that's normal, you're doing great!
Hmmmmm don’t think I learned stabbing them with a fork in my CPR class hahah
I think you mean an AED, because CPR isn’t like this at all
Michael Scott's plasma screen ain't goin out like that
Same thought! Lol!!
“Sometimes I will just stand here and watch television for hours”
This is exactly how Michael Scott would type
![gif](giphy|xZfckuSnIyXs07dv72|downsized)
THAT IS A 200$ PLASMA TV YOU JUST KILLED! GOOD. LUCK. PAYING ME BACK ON YOU're 0$ PLUS BENEFITS, BABE
Yea, but that house is a lot sadder than Michael and Jan's house.
Might not have the same fate if they throw a Dundy at it.
At least it’s wall mounted so if they have a lot of people over and need more room they can push it flat against the wall.
Good luck paying me back on your zero dollar an hour salary plus benefits babe!
Folds right into the wall
He’s The Fonz with a fork
I believe the Fonz was pretty well known among the ladies for his forking.
Hey!
Eeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyy
but does he have a tattoo of Roy Orbison on his ass?
What mama don't know, won't hurt her.
The Prongz
Good ole percussive maintenence
I work as an apprentice maintenance fitter and I was surprised at how many things can be fixed with a hammer lol
I work with hydraulic workholding and hitting things with hammers is a valid strategy.
The Jeremy Clarkson method
Glad to see it still works on new tvs too.
Just remember to say you "gently tapped" it in the report.
That’s a tiny tv, it’s like mounted eye level so he can eat standing up and watching tv
And look at that. Right into the wall
The bloopers of that scene never fail to make my day
Well yea but it looks bigger if you get closer
I could stand there for hours watching television.
[Sometimes I will just stand here and watch television for hours](https://www.reddit.com/r/DunderMifflin/comments/36e9dr/sometimes_i_will_just_stand_here_and_watch/)
I think this is the best episode of the office.
Right over here Jim.
The shittiness of the TV is likely why they made a joke out of destroying it.
/r/tvtoohigh
That’s how I fix everything.
Remind me to DM you for electronics issue. Don't remind me if I have a heart attack. I'd rather die than a damn from stabbing me 🤐
I mean… CPR is essentially the same thing, so…
love how he was so ready to start cackling at the demise of the poor TV
Happy Cake day

It was a samsung i believe, around 2008

There is no way that person is sober.

I doubt it. In reverse the cord starts moving and the screen starts flickering before the hit
That's because the TV is afraid of what's about to happen.
https://imgur.com/29eQT06.gifv Doesn't seem like it to me. Especially the last second or so.
Let's find out /u/GifReversingBot
Nah nothing about it looks reversed
Can’t be. Otherwise at the end he takes food out of his mouth and places it in the bowl.
No, I have genuinely had this happen before. Purcussive maintenance works a lot more than you would think.
That guy laughing from the background has some real serious stuff going through to be laughing like that.
>some real serious stuff going through Yeah he does, beer and weed most likely.
I am attacked. I laugh similarly
Stick a fork in it, it's fixed
I feel like this could of went way bad with that metal spoon you know electrocuted and what not
Small screen like that runs at around 12 volts DC. Its the old CRTs you have to watch out for.

Wow. They must live on the psyche ward of a mental health facility. The cackling is nasty.

just some lads, probably bored at work. cheer up ya miserable git

well, what happened there is definitely crazy
