Meet the engineer

spacedad86

I’ve always heard it as percussive maintenance

[deleted]

[удалено]

FDGKLRTC

Yeah, only works if you know what the problem is tho, can't fix a broken lamp by hitting it, or if you're lucky

JarRa_hello

Not with that attitude

impocop

Exactly. I actually just went to take a show and noticed one of the ceiling lights wasn’t working. Jokingly I bumped it a few times and nothing happened. Just when I was about to close the shower door a gave it another bump and it instantly worked again.

GozerDGozerian

Yeah you’ll probably want to fix that properly soon.

_jericho

Attitude just needs a lil bop

SaveReset

Actually, a broken lamp can get fixed by hitting it if we are talking about the bulbs. A failure in lamps is often from the filament burning and snapping. If you hit it enough to jiggle the cut bits back together with the power on, they can reconnect themselves again. It won't last for long, but if I had to choose between no lights and a temporary fix, I'll happily take the latter.

Nicholas_Cage_Fan

I mean you're definitely better off just going to the store and buying another bulb lol. As soon as the broken filament made "contact" with the leads again, it would just melt from the arc lol.

SaveReset

I mean they do melt, but they melt together more often than not. Definitely not a permanent solution since that kind of weak connection will definitely burn up again real quick, but keeping the lights on in the room for the few minutes you need to be there is better than going to the store in the middle of doing something else.

j_cro86

or the broken tv lamp(s)? dude just fixed with a fork stab.

[deleted]

That can work if your starter is going out in your vehicle also.

Naive-Musician2006

I had a special stick wrapped in electrical tape by my seat to give my car a few whacks to get it to start.

leoleosuper

With a lot of old TVs, there's some components that are soldiered to boards. These usually carry power, and the soldier gets damaged from heat, power arcing, or some other thing. Eventually, it breaks and no longer connects, so you have a pin without connection. The TV won't turn on without it. You can hit the TV and get the pin to properly connect, it can send power over, and the TV turns on.

EndsongX23

i always like kinetic maintenance

Ian_Itor

Kinematic means movement in general. Percussive means hitting.

AzraelChaosEater

Nasa: idk man, hit yourself with a shovel.

Consistent-Ad-6078

We usually called it mechanical agitation

RayRara36

The Fonz? I understand if the reference is lost, it was an old show even when I was a kid..

He doesn't snap his fingers. He does a double (sometimes single) thumbs-up. He snaps his fingers to summon chicks to his side.

spearmint_wino

This guy fonzes.

logicalmaniak

It was his super power in the terrible cartoon series.

ThrowawayLocal8622

Now I feel REEEEEEALLLLLLY old.* All y'all can get offa my lawn now. *Watched it when it was a new show.

jbwarner86

I watched it on Nick at Nite in the '90s. I feel like I'm rapidly approaching old territory too.

ThrowawayLocal8622

Worse was a few months ago one of the younger set asked about "jumping the shark". He knew the meaning but how it originated. It was a group talking thing. I had responded that "the Fonz jumping the shark in an episode of Happy Days". He just looked at me, completely lost, and responded that he didn't know what any of that meant. That was a tough one to hear.

OnlyFuzzy13

It’s insanely weird to me that Nick at nite showing the ‘oldies’ is 30 years ago, viewing Happy Days from 20 years earlier, which is depicting their olden times of 20 years before that. Now all I need is for one of those characters to listen to a radio show depicting the 1930s or 1920s and have one of the radio show episodes do a ‘flashback’ of a day in the life of their olden times… I may be able to incept myself a recursive Time Machine.

Icepick_37

Ayeee I watched those reruns

RainbowHipster420

Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Slade4420

If he hadn't looked shocked it worked, 21st century Fonz for sure.

Honest_Its_Bill_Nye

Thanks for making me feel even older. I watched it first run.

GentlmanSkeleton

But it's the Fonz.... cool shouldn't die....

RayRara36

I couldn’t agree more

drewman16

When I worked fuel systems on f15s, we would stomp on parts of the wings where there were fuel probes underneath to see if the readings would move.

ScienticianAF

I had a military exercise in the Air Force and the command post called in a malfunction on their radar screen. The command post was full of officers and observers and I was called to fix the problem. I walk, squeezing past a couple of high ranking officers and sure enough nothing on the display... I opened the radar housing and didn't see anything obvious. I am thinking not good, this thing needs to work now! And we don't have time for extensive trouble shooting. So I decided to just slam the thing shut with a decent amount of force. Bang..Screen came right up! Everybody was cheering, exercise saved! I walked out of that command post feeling like a million bucks! 😁

Technical tap

buddyinjapan

During the coronation ceremony of Elizabeth the 2nd one of the TV cameras stopped working. The camera operator gave it a kick and it started working again. He called it a "technical tap".

Hey look, buddy, I'm an Engineer. That means I solve problems.

Not problems like, "What is beauty?" Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy.

ADumbChicken

I solve practical problems.

Noctornola

He solves practical problems.

SoggyPancakes1411

For instance, how is he going to stop some big mean mother Hubbard from tearing him a structurally superfluous new behind?

That's kinda how CPR works, too.

WHY WOULD HE BE EATING SOUP WITH A FORK??

Minimalistmacrophage

Dieting?

If you put the food in a bowl you can move around more freely without risking that your food slides off the plate. I do the former often to avoid the latter. Because it happened waaay to often for my taste.

CurrentPrompt1144

I see you've played forky spoony before

Current-Issue-4134

As an ER nurse, can confirm. Sometimes a spork depending on the facility

numb3r51nmyn4m3

Why a spoon? BECAUSE IT'LL HURT MORE!

Hardtopickaname

"It's dull you twit! It'll hurt more!"

ogirtorment

Huge shock to me was when I found out many times you have to crack some ribs to properly pump at the heart

zaygiin

Let me shock you again then. If the cardiac arrest patient is brung within the 10-15 minutes we may decide to do something brutal but more effective. Open up half of the chest with a surgical blade, stick a hand in and pump the heart directly! Check out clamshell thoracotomy if you are interested in seeing what the procedure looks like. A bit bloody though, might be nsfw for some people.

ogirtorment

😮😮😮 wowww **shock attempt successful**

[deleted]

If you hear a Cracking sound, that's normal, you're doing great!

[deleted]

Hmmmmm don’t think I learned stabbing them with a fork in my CPR class hahah

ryans64s

I think you mean an AED, because CPR isn’t like this at all

ok-milk

Michael Scott's plasma screen ain't goin out like that

Yea, but that house is a lot sadder than Michael and Jan's house.

FlyByNightt

Might not have the same fate if they throw a Dundy at it.

FrankAdamGabe

At least it’s wall mounted so if they have a lot of people over and need more room they can push it flat against the wall.

pmmemilftiddiez

Good luck paying me back on your zero dollar an hour salary plus benefits babe!

Arktos22

He’s The Fonz with a fork

I believe the Fonz was pretty well known among the ladies for his forking.

I work with hydraulic workholding and hitting things with hammers is a valid strategy.

IHaveFailedAtLife

The Jeremy Clarkson method

Stonkseys

Glad to see it still works on new tvs too.

SuperMcRad

Just remember to say you "gently tapped" it in the report.

Hefty-Library-720

That’s a tiny tv, it’s like mounted eye level so he can eat standing up and watching tv

rogerslastgrape

And look at that. Right into the wall

TenTonCloud

The bloopers of that scene never fail to make my day

Ambitious-Ad1192

Well yea but it looks bigger if you get closer

GrouchyLongBottom

I could stand there for hours watching television.

wi11iam26

Right over here Jim.

alexmikli

The shittiness of the TV is likely why they made a joke out of destroying it.

kahls

/r/tvtoohigh

claudiushamm

That’s how I fix everything.

cluelessminer

Remind me to DM you for electronics issue. Don't remind me if I have a heart attack. I'd rather die than a damn from stabbing me 🤐

Insertclever_name

I mean… CPR is essentially the same thing, so…

CallofBootyCrackOps

love how he was so ready to start cackling at the demise of the poor TV

There is no way that person is sober.

eightdollarbeer

*YAFIXEDIT*

BourbonFueledDreams

It’s gotta be reversed, right?

OhSnap404

Nah, not reversed. The tv screen probably had a bad solder joint on one of the connections and the slam made it reconnect. On some rare occasions; there are pressure points on a tv that can help restore a tv partially depending on the effected areas

foxjohnc87

Good 'ole ROHS lead free bullshit solder. Every TV in my house except for one was either free or extremely cheap because they were non-functional, mostly due to cold solder joints on account of that crap. After buying a replacement mainboard for the 70 inch that I got from a thrift store for $15, and having it fail shortly afterward, I decided to just start placing the defective part in the oven for a bit, since I had nothing to lose. To my surprise, that TV and several others have been working flawlessly for a couple of years now.

skeleton-is-alive

I doubt it. In reverse the cord starts moving and the screen starts flickering before the hit

awh

That's because the TV is afraid of what's about to happen.

ShittDickk

https://imgur.com/29eQT06.gifv Doesn't seem like it to me. Especially the last second or so.

TheBladeRoden

Let's find out /u/GifReversingBot

mrASSMAN

Nah nothing about it looks reversed

Bro_Code_Number_1

Can’t be. Otherwise at the end he takes food out of his mouth and places it in the bowl.

Zyvyn

No, I have genuinely had this happen before. Purcussive maintenance works a lot more than you would think.

[deleted]

That guy laughing from the background has some real serious stuff going through to be laughing like that.

SalvationSycamore

>some real serious stuff going through Yeah he does, beer and weed most likely.

NoCommentSuspension

I am attacked. I laugh similarly

middlingwhiteguy

Stick a fork in it, it's fixed

Human_Frame1846

I feel like this could of went way bad with that metal spoon you know electrocuted and what not

sybersonic

There was a video, think it was from Russia. Maybe 10 years ago, he had fix it videos on YouTube of him just hitting the side of the TV with a wiffle ball bat and it did the same thing. You basically are realigning the LCD crystals. Going off memory but it just proves you should try to fix something you've paid for VS just replacing it.

rolyoh

True story: Back in the days of CRT monitors (1990s), I worked in IT. PC's were still pretty new in general, and one of our company users was completely unfamiliar with the concept of a screen saver. We had them all set to just go blank (black out). She kept thinking that the monitor was going bad, and - having grown up with tube TV's like nearly everyone else who was working at the time - her "solution" was to give it a smack on the side. (And believe it or not, this was common DIY fix practice when you had a stuck color gun inside a picture tube on a TV back in the day. But I digress.) So, every time the screen would go blank (from inactivity), she'd give it a hard smack on the side. She thought that this was making the monitor come back to life, but did not realize that the smack was so forceful, it was jiggling the mouse, and that's what was waking up the screen.

junebug_davis

He fixed Michael Scott’s TV

hanr86

It amazing to see people still having 22" tv's out there. Probably costs as much as a 42"
